A unique property in a unique location The Dutch Central Government Real Estate Agency has just put the characteristic office building/residential property on 19-21 Lange Voorhout up for sale. This 18th-century building has a rich history, as does its location at the heart of the Museumkwartier neighbourhood. The property boasts a gross floor area of 1,846 square metres and sits on a 00.10.70-hectare plot, meaning that it may justifiably be called grand. The property features a ground floor, two additional stories on top of that, and a basement underneath. It also comes with four private parking spots. The property would be suitable either as an office building for a company or institution or as a residential property, or perhaps even both. In short, this is a beautiful, monumental property in a unique location with plenty of options for (re)development.

A property that is as imposing as it is uniquely monumental is on sale on one of the most well known streets of The Hague.

A building with heaps of character At the start of the 18th century, number 19 and 20 were the home of the rich Jewish-Portuguese Anthonio de Pinto and his family. He is the one who commissioned the balcony above the entrance. The stucco ceiling in the extension that leads into the garden can also be attributed to his residence in the property. Moreover, Pinto was the one to also acquire the building on 21 Lange Voorhout later on. The property is the site of much history. In the 19th century, it was the home of Leopold van Limburg Stirum, who played a major role in bringing the French occupation to a safe end. Between November 17th and 30th in the year of 1813, the property even served as the centre of Dutch government.

P8

This listed property on 19-21 Lange Voorhout dates back to the 17th and 18th century, and the basement features trace elements that go even further back.

Richly Decorated The former grandeur of the property still shows in many places. The beautiful white Louis XVI-style faรงade has a richly decorated centre bay. The wall decoration on the first floor dates back to the 18th century, and the neo-Louis XVI-style decoration in the ground floor rooms dates back to the 19th century. The conservatory and the great room feature rich wall ornaments. The building also still contains many original mirrors, gilded

ornaments, and mouldings. Other characteristic features include the beautiful original stucco ceilings and various other details such as a number of original fireplaces and beautiful hardwood staircases. In the centre of the spacious garden is a sculpture from 1984 by Christa van Santen, who also created the stone relief on the exterior wall.

The current layout originates from the early 19th century when the three buildings were linked together, even though they were

via a number of passages in 1982. The property consists of four storeys and its total gross floor area is 1,846 square metres. The ground floor (GFA: 533 m2) features a number of multifunctional rooms in various sizes, as well as a loggia. The first floor also has a gross floor area of 533 m2 and is reminiscent of the ground floor in terms of its floor plan. The second floor has a gross floor area of 438 m2 and also contains a number of different rooms as well as a vaulted ceiling. The property also has a spacious basement (GFA: 340 m2) with a crawl space underneath. There are toilet facilities on every floor. The property comes with four private parking spots in a subterranean garage in the garden. The garden is very spacious and thus offers many more opportunities for development. P11

A rich historical environment The Lange Voorhout is a stately, lush lane lined by lime trees in the historical Museumkwartier neighbourhood. Construction in this area dates all the way back to the early 15th century. The big, beautiful buildings that grace the lane today primarily date back to the 18th century. Many of these buildings are listed properties. The property on 19-21 Lange Voorhout is surrounded by excellent company. Some other famous buildings on the lane are the Kloosterkerk or Convent Church, the Pageshuis (a former boarding house for page boys), the Dutch Supreme Court’s building, the fancy Hotel Des Indes, and the Lange Voorhout Palace, which now houses the successful ‘Escher at the Palace’ exhibition. The lane is also home to a number of foreign embassies, as well as the narrowest residential property in all of The Hague, which measures a mere 1,83 metres wide.

P17

The lane has a rich historical background. In 1536, emperor Charles V ordered four rows of lime trees to be planted along the lane, the very trees from the famous Dutch children’s rhyme ‘Liesje taught Lotje how to walk along the lime-tree lane’. Helene Kröller-Müller opened her first museum on 1 Lange Voorhout back in 1913. Number 7 was the headquarters of commander-in-chief General Winkelman during the Second World War; it is where he made the decision to surrender on May 14th, 1940. The famed Hotel Des Indes has bedded down many a famous guest, including US presidents Eisenhower and Roosevelt and other world leaders such as Churchill, Chirac, and Blair, but also pop-culture legends such as the Rolling Stones. And one more fun fact; the famous coffee and caramel-flavoured ‘Haagse Hopjes’ candy originated on the Lange Voorhout, back in the 18th century!

P18

“

A lane with history

The Lange Voorhout was fully renovated back in 2009. The roots of the ancient trees were reinforced with specially developed structures. Concrete slabs were installed for the annual The Hague Sculpture Exposition, new benches were put in, and a new type of sustainable LED street lighting was installed as well. The golden crowns on top of the streetlamps mark the path that the royal family journeys in the Golden Coach, every year on Prince’s Day.
