Educated at the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury, with a major in painting, gary baigent is a selftaught photographer. His work has been published in the unseen city, 123 photographs of Auckland and the active eye, baigent, Collins, fields – three nz photographers. Baigentâ€&#x;s photographs are held in permanent collections in Auckland city art gallery and museum of new Zealand te papa tongarewa, as well as in various private collections and nz photographic anthologies. RICHARD KILLEEN MAN IN A CANOE, 2007 Pigment inkjet print on paper (framed) ed. 2/20 450mm x 380mm (without frame) _________________________ $1000 - $1300 Leading new Zealand painter, sculptor and digital artist Richard Killeen was educated at the Elam School of Fine Arts where his lecturers included Colin McCahon. He has won a number of awards, including the QE2 Arts Fellowship, and has exhibited internationally including at the 6th Sydney biennale, with anzart at the Edinburgh festival in 1984 and at a major survey show in 1999 at the auckland art gallery. PHILIPPA BLAIR UNTITLED, 1988 Pastel on paper 1225mm x 900mm framed _________________________ $900 - $1200 Expatriate artist Philippa Blair is a graduate of Canterbury‟s Ilam School of Art and has been described as the “New Zealand matriarch of abstract expressionist action painting”. With more than 100 solo and 300 group exhibitions to her credit, her work is characterised by dynamic experimentation and a vibrant palette, and is held in all major NZ collections alongside many collections in the US where she resides. DEAN BUCHANAN COROMANDEL LANDSCAPE, 2009 Oil on canvas 690mm x 820mm _________________________ $2000 - $3000 Dean Buchanan began to paint while living in London and visiting the art galleries of western Europe. On returning home he became an Exhibitions Technician at the Auckland City Art Gallery. His work is characterised by coastal and landscape themes and is known for its colour and vibrancy. Buchanan was the winner of the Montana Lindauer Award in 1987 and his paintings are included in a number of collections including at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. ANNETTE ISBEY UNTITLED Oil on linen 295mm x 825mm _________________________ $2500 - $3500 Annette Isbey is one of New Zealand‟s senior female artists. Alongside portraiture she is best known for landscapes and seascapes inspired by her childhood in the far north during the depression. “Although much of my schooling there was poor, my very rich education was in exploring and knowing the land, the hills and the mountains, the creeks and the rivers, the waterfalls,” she says. He exhibits in New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Europe. Kregar won the Wallace Art Award in 2000 and a Norsewear Art Award in 2004. He has completed many public commissions and his work is held in major NZ art collections and sculpture parks; art residencies include New York, Charlotte (USA) and Melbourne. Kregarâ€&#x;s art practice is concerned with relationships between art and everyday life and is strongly connected to the social, economic and political environments he lives in. PORTRAIT OF BILL SMITHER (FATHER), 1975 Graphite on paper 740mm x 550mm framed _________________________ $1600 - 2000 Painter, sculptor and screenprinter Michael Smither was born in New Plymouth and attended Elam Art School. He was a founding member of „Group 60‟, alongside his mentor, Don Driver. Smither was inspired by his printmaking father, Bill Smither, to explore the possibility of screenprints, a medium with which he is now synonymous. one of New Zealand‟s leading artists, his work is held in all major collections. DAME JANET PAUL THE BATHERS, 1991 Chalk and watercolour on paper 520mm x 780mm framed _________________________ $800 - $1000 Artist, art historian and publisher Dame Janet Paul achieved a deserved reputation as a skilled artist of landscapes and people, as well as etchings. Amongst her many accomplishments she was also well-known for her dust jacket designs and her commitment to art as a means of enriching the human spirit. She died in 2004. Of Maori, Chinese, Danish and Scottish descent, his pop-art charts a journey of cultural discovery and self-acceptance and springs from a world of bold colours and optimistic clarity. Hansen works in many media and is one of six Maori artists commissioned to provide authentic Maori designs for RWC 2011, resulting in the tiki series. “I was reading about marie antoinette and saw an image of a pair of her beautiful shoes…I decided to make a series of shoes that could be the antithesis of this. Every week I would travel to the titirangi rsa and collect empty wine cartons – this became the main material for the shoes.” ________________________ $1200 - $1400 Lauren lysaght is one of New Zealand's foremost social conscience artists and has exhibited extensively in NZ and internationally since the early 1980s. Self-taught, she deliberately works in a non-traditional style, using 'low-rent' materials to create seductive and provocative works that bring attention to important issues such as disability, poverty, and mental illness, whilst remaining playful and exuberant. Lysaght was a Gold Medal Award Winner at italy‟s annual art addiction Exhibition in venice and has received Arts Council / cnz funding. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections including Te Papa Tongarewa, the Chartwell Collection and the anz bank, which holds an entire range of chateau cardboard shoes. Adept in a range of media, Tuffery is passionate about his ancestry and environmental conservation, as well as rugby in which he excelled with the natural strength and unadulterated flare common to his Pacific brothers. JULIA BROOKE-WHITE FLOTSAM – RAOUL ISLAND, 2004 DIGITAL PRINT, ED. 2/5 460mm x 290mm framed _________________________ $700 - $800 Julia brooke-white got her first break as a professional photographer working at the Fiji Museum photographing artefacts. Resettling in NZ after ten years of being immersed in pacific cultures, she has continued her practice. A committed environmentalist and traveller to remote and wild places, with an academic background in botany, in 2002-03 she joined the annual weed team on Raoul Island where she took this photo. Generously donated by the artist

SALLY GRIFFIN FAULTLINE 2011 Pencil – lead and coloured 700mm x 960mm _________________________ $1500 - $2000 Melbourne-born Sally Griffin, has lived primarily in New Zealand since arriving in the early 1970s after graduating from art school. Represented by denis cohn in Auckland, she exhibited regularly from 1978-1994 and was the recipient of several arts grants during that time. In the 1980s and 90s, during which time she began working in the political arena, griffin became known for her politically orientated wall murals and large paintings, as well as her commitment to a popular fine art. Griffin has explored a „Pacific Cubism‟ technique, to „wrench historical images into a modern context‟. Her work is held in many private collections. He came to New Zealand in 1972 and has painted, exhibited and taught art and art history in Wellington ever since. His paintings are in most major New Zealand collections, including Te Papa. Described by David Eggleton in 2007 as „ambiguous parables of appetite‟, his coloured, humanoid figures on plywood are „like the wiggling and giggling inhabitants of a four-in-the-morning dream from which you wake sweating‟. He has exhibited extensively and is represented in most New Zealand public, and many private, collections. ALAN WEHIPEIHANA ngati raukawa ISLAND DNA (PART OF A SERIES) Large wooden panel - Matai weatherboards, acrylic paint, lightly carved 300mm x 2700mm x 200mm _________________________ $3500 - $5500 Alan wehipeihana is a self-taught multimedia artist who works in a variety of artistic practices including glass leading lighting, landscape gardening, photography, stone carving, wood carving, metalwork and painting. Since 1992 he has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions throughout New Zealand, particularly in Wellington and on the Kapiti Coast and has also given many Workshops and tutored at Massey University and Whitireia Polytechnic. Wehipeihana finds inspiration in 'found or discarded objects' and uses them to explore new artistic paths. Generously donated by the artist

Her work uses a still life format, particularly within museums, to bring an awareness of traditional and forgotten taonga to a contemporary audience. She is known for her deeply toned black-and-white images resulting from specialist hand printing. Pardington has received many fellowships, residencies, awards and grants, including the Ngai Tahu residency at Otago Polytechnic in 2006, Frances Hodgkins Fellowship in both 1996 & 97, the Visa Gold Art Award 1997, and the Moet & Chandon Fellow (France) in 1991-92. GRANT TILLY KEA KAHA CUPBOARD, 2010 Automata on recycled kauri (Southdown freezing works) 300mm x 680mm x 170mm _________________________ $900 - $1100 Grant Tilly is a much-cherished Wellington artist and actor, studying art at technical College before training as an art and craft teacher. In forty years as an actor, he has taken on a huge variety of roles including that of Colin in the iconic television series Gliding On. For many years he also worked as an illustrator and writer, charting the changing face of Wellington‟s urban landscape for the evening post. With eye trouble compromising Tilly‟s ability to draw buildings, he took up wood working, specialising in painted and decorated boxes, chests and trunks. This has now evolved into the automata and „pop-up book‟ creations in which he is currently immersed. Generously donated by the artist

From Dunedin, he was educated at John McGlashan College and Southland Boysâ€&#x; High School, later supporting himself by painting while studying for a BA at the University of Otago. During his 3rd year, he decided it had to be one or the other, so he painted full time, which he has done ever since. Graham lives in the countryside near Queenstown where he has a studio and gallery. Generously donated by the artist

DENNIS KNIGHT TURNER ARROW/J., 1992 Watercolour on heavy paper 570mm x 380mm (image) _________________________ $1000 - $1500 Whanganui-born artist Dennis Knight Turner ran away to wellington at the age of 14, working in the commercial art sector whilst attending evening art classes alongside theo schoon and gordon walters. besides portraiture, he is most well-known for his pioneering blending of modernist, maori and oceanic motifs. In 1964 he moved to England, discouraged by a perceived lack of support for his art. In 1992, Knight Turner returned briefly to take up an artistâ€&#x;s residency with the Sarjeant Gallery, producing a series of stunning modernist watercolours. his work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions since 1952. FIA OLA, 2010 Mixed media on canvas 1220mm x 1820mm _________________________ $13000 - $15000 distinguished Pacific artist Fatu Feu'u has been considered the leader of contemporary Pacific arts for many years. His work records his personal responses and interpretations of oral histories, myths, stories, songs, traditions and political events in and about Samoa. He is accomplished in many media, using a bright palette with distinct brushwork and, often, many layers of paint giving a textual appearance. GREGORY O‟BRIEN PABLO‟S LOVE SONG, WAIHI BEACH, 2011 Etching, ed 15/25 415mm x 300mm _________________________ Born in Matamata in 1961, Gregory O‟Brien is a poet, art writer, painter, curator, editor and teacher. He has featured at a large number of international literary festivals and has worked with letterpress printers, visual artists, typographers, composers, musicians, film-makers and fashion designers exploring new possibilities for poetry. O‟Brien has exhibited widely as a painter and his etchings celebrate a love of literature, place and art. Generously donated by the artist

JEANNE MACASKILL M.N.Z.M. THE SWANS Mixed media on hand-made paper 1070mm x 700mm _________________________ $1500 - $2000 Jeanne macaskill studied five years full time at the Chelsea School of Art in London and gained her art qualifications there. After living in Europe for 17 years, she returned to New Zealand where she has exhibited widely for more than 35 years. In 2004 macaskill became a member of the NZ Order of Merit. She has also won the Governor Generalâ€&#x;s Art Award and is a Fellow of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Generously donated by the artist

Born in 1957, mckane studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts in the 1970s. Working first in graphics and performance art, he moved to London and then Paris as an artist and cultural acteur. He is the co-founder and current president of 'Light Cone', a non-profit organisation for the distribution of experimental film, and has been involved in many film and cinema installations and experimental events, including „Warhol, cinema‟ at the George Pompidou centre in paris. In mckane's personal work, he finds his inspiration in nature, time and change. His work is held in both public and private collections. Generously donated by the artist

KOPOTAMA JACOBSEN BRAIN STORM, 2011 Painting, ink on paper 760mm x 580mm _________________________ $800 - $1000 Christchurch-born, to a Niuean father and a NZ Palagi Mother, emerging Pacific artist Kopotama Jacobsen now lives in Melbourne. He has studied graphic design and music production and has worked in theatre and I.T. STANLEY PALMER ROAD – MAHURANGI, 2010 bamboo, engraving and lithograph 320mm x 580mm _________________________ $1200 - $1600 Stanley Palmer was born near Thames and studied at Dunedin Technical College. He is most well-known as a printmaker, including woodcuts, monoprints and bamboo engravings. His work primarily features coasts and depicts themes of colonisation, conservation, humanity and the land. Palmer has had numerous exhibitions and his work is held in the national art collection at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and in most other New Zealand public collections. MURRAY BALL ASSET SALES, 1999 Black ink on paper, unique 280mm x 350mm ______________________ $1500 - $1800 Murray Ball is one of New Zealand‟s iconic cartoonists. He spent the early part of his life in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa and got his first break as a cartoonist for the Manawatu Times before working freelance in the United Kingdom. Returning to New Zealand, Ball‟s real success came with the continuing cartoon strip „Footrot Flats, set on a New Zealand farm. It made its first appearance in the Evening Post in early 1976. Prior to the election in 1999, Ball gifted a set of six original black pen „asset sale‟ cartoons to Jim Anderton because of the role he had played in leading the fight against privatisation. After graduating in Fine and Applied Art in1975 and Ceramics in 1976 Chris Weaver set up a studio on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. He regularly exhibits throughout New Zealand and Asia including Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China and has also exhibited in Australia, the United States, and Germany. He has been selected for international award exhibitions in Australia and Japan and has won several major awards and study and creative development grants. His teapots are in many public and private collections and have featured in several publications.

Jeweller Alan Preston, who established Fingers Jewellery in Auckland in 1974, is a distinguished exponent of contemporary pacific adornment. He has had a close association with the design courses at Unitec and has held the position of Adjunct Professor in the Department of Design of the Faculty of Business and Creative Enterprise since 2002. Preston won the Best Craft Design at the DINZ Best Design Awards in 1992, and received a Creative development Grant from the qe11 arts council in 1993. In 2006 Preston was the first recipient of the Deane Award for Decorative arts. His „startled kiwi‟ badges have become a true nz icon.
