tips from artist to artist

By Elly Potamianos

SELF PROMOTING YOUR ARTWORK

T

oday we have an advantage from the traditional methods of marketing and promoting art with the information highway, the internet. It is a precious interpretive tool that enables better worldwide communications. There are many websites, blogs, and social networks of which one can establish a profile for free. The online social networks such as (Facebook, Linkedin, MySpace, Twitter, Youtube, etc.) serve as great agents for success in becoming known. Hosting a website will create definite recognition, but if one wants to be serious about establishing a presence, it is imperative to also purchase the domain and implement, “all right reserved.” This is a more professional approach and an easier method to becoming available in searches. Although, there are many free website-hosing internet sites, purchasing the domain with a unique URL address that depicts your name of business alone without any commercial ads can vary in price starting from as low as $15 per year. Monthly fees are applicable, but for many websites it is more affordable to pay a lump sum annually when a cut price as such is available. Meta tags within a website are very important for each posting and should consist of at least five relative descriptions, which will allow easy access through searches. Designing the website should be a creative process for the individual artist to further express their talents. Publications creatively posted relative to art can enhance a website along with a small profile of the artist’s accomplishments, journey, and passion. After putting up a website there is continuous upkeep, changes, and improvements to be made. One cannot just sit back and think that instant fame and fortune will prevail. Like all entrepreneur ventures it takes several years of low economic growth and possible losses at start. Each internet search agent such as Google has a portal to allow all businesses to request their website be listed. Listings can also be made in various directories.

Renting space for a solo exhibit or combined with several artists can be effective. This would again require appropriate marketing, advertising, and vital invitations especially for opening night. In an exhibit of five pieces or more it is best to have a theme of coordinating artwork, but for marketing purposes an artist’s portfolio should have a good variety of art to display for a better chance in being commissioned. Have a business card with a piece of art representing your work along with all contact information. In order to better prepare clientele in a memorable way print a postcard-size invitation to advertise a specifically themed upcoming exhibit. Remember, marketing sales is a promotional effort to show what you have to offer and should be done discreetly, honestly, eye catching, interesting, without hesitation, clutter, and confusing information. The more knowledge you have of the consumer or client, the more you will be able to nurture their needs. Presenting a customer with five different products can definitely confuse them with a great risk in losing them, but knowing them can enable you to present a choice of two with a successful conclusive sale. Most of all as an artist presentation will be expected to exceed specialty beyond the norm. Taking advantage of trade shows, church sales functions, village and community sales outings, can be beneficially lucrative depending on the travel and time you are willing to contribute. Here is where reproductions can be a jewel nicely packaged. They can also be matted, as well as, framed in a presentable manner. This is an outstanding and at the same time, a profitable introduction.

Having a prepared CD for specific artwork or private collection is also very important to easily present your artwork to interested parties, and prospective business associates.

Private home showings for elite connoisseurs of art with the goal to decorate their home can establish not only sales, but future customers with specific needs. Then there is the favorite or relative-owned exclusive restaurant that can give attention to your artwork, while enhancing the premises with an appealing upgrade. Lastly, but not least is store fronts that remain dark and unused. The owner may want to lighten the premises by allowing an artist to take over free occupancy while filling the walls with colorful art. Consequently, the artist now has a great studio that often gathers crowds to just watch.

Fundamentally, the goal is to physically exhibit as much as possible. Fine art is best appreciated up close leaving the reproductions to the web. Although, a well-known artist may successfully sell a more expensive art piece eventually in this manner, it is prevalent for most successful businesses to begin from a storefront that has already built clientele.

Galleries will always be for, “who you know” and “how well you are known,” which can secure a better deal in sales and profit. Finding the right gallery may depend on distances, knowing the space size, appearance, location, hours open, reputation, connections and clientele, marketing and advertising strategies, and most of all their prices.

Ione Citrin "I dream, therefore, I am" I create art because I must. It is a necessary extension of my life. It identifies and substantiates my existence. It is my profile and my legacy. I want to intrigue and entertain. I want to initiate wonder and questions. I want to communicate my thoughts, dreams and desires. most of all, I want to be! Ione’s art has shown nationally since 1998 when, after years of world travel, a successful television, radio, theatre and film career in the performing arts, she decided to focus her richly diverse talents on the visual arts. Ione’s artistic expression, creativity, and passion for communication have resulted in numerous awards for her painting, sculpture, mixed media, and assemblage. Ione is an avant garde artist whose artistic expression takes fantastic shape through her diverse oil and watercolor paintings, bronze sculptures, found object collages and mixed media assemblages. Her contemporary paintings and sculptures range

from abstract to realistic to impressionistic - all visionary interpretations from her imaginative soul. Ione uses only one name but a variety of styles to soothe her wild imagination. A native of Chicago, she is a former television star and commercial voice-over artist. Now she wins awards and sells her creativity through her hands instead of through her larynx. Her art is as original as she is - bold, colorful and highly decorative.

Jason Fairchild By Robert Kameczura Based in Chicago,USA, Jason Fairchild is a modern artist that currently uses painting as the fastest and best way to get his message out there. Women are the center of the art of Jason Fairchild: or to be more accurate women and the unique forms of space that surround them. (Untitled) The women he portrays are not the everyday women we see on the street waiting for buses or shopping in the neighborhood supermarket, they are sexually charged nude or semi-nude figures that seem part lover, part mother, part dream girlfriend, part wife, part earth goddess. They are figures of beauty, pleasure, pain, mysticism and fantasy. (Angel of Destruction) His figures are also involved in differing ways with processes of metamorphosis and transformation. They are attempts to portray the journey’s of the soul through various stages and roles in life but in a way which emphasizes the ambiguity of humanity floating through time and space. His figures seem in the midst of travel in journeys that are infinite; his images frozen moments in endless voyages where the model poses for a second in a fantastic landscape, let’s the artist capture her image, but will soon move on to travel onward to another place and another time and another role in her existence. (Shore’s Left Behind) As such his woman have a slightly ambiguous dream like quality that hints at, but never overtly states, elements of the human condition. In his art Eros meets encounters the mysteries of nature; swirling seas and skies, as well as vast, usually barren, landscapes are a common motif. (Rising Sea) As Fairchild states: “Seas, skies and the earth are places where things are constantly changing. The sea is where we came from in the distant past. It is a symbol of our origins and birth. The Earth is where we may return. The sky is a symbol of aspirations, of the future, a place where we might find answers that reflect changes we pass through in life. As I see it, elements of land, sea and sky seem characters in the drama existence, they are

the things that cause change, their qualities effect what change can be…just like gravity effects our bodies and the way they grow and age, so the landscape and the place we find ourselves in effects the inner soul of people.” Read this complete article on the web site:

PROTESTA DE LAS MADRES DE PLAZA DE MAYO. Oil on canvas. 72x48 diptych. 2002.

Gabriel Gross By Marco Antonio Rodríguez Gabriel Gross (from Quito, Ecuador 1952) is an extremely perceptive and sensitive man, whose art is the vital epicenter of his life. It is away from art that he withdraws and to which he always returns without delay. Art has been the core of his existential being. As a child, Gabriel, drew in secret (from whom was he hiding? himself? who knows?). His rich and varied intellect is due to his tireless longing for integral training and knowledge, always in the field of the visual arts. His experience as a producer, director, light and sound designer for multiple theatre productions, along with his dynamic personality, has led him to act in short films. Lightness and levity are the signs of Gross’s art. His visuals do not provoke, rather they ease. They do not invoke anxiety, rather they strengthen. They do not darken; they illuminate. They do not distract, rather they seduce. It doesn’t matter if his visuals penetrate one’s inner perplexities or confront themes of the environment. The artist, unperturbed, gives us a sunny and joyful world impregnated with tenderness. The dreams of his childhood and adolescence are a constant theme in his work. It is in this space that Gross houses his characters. “I dream with an art of equality and serenity, dispose of themes of disquiet or deprivation,” - said Matisse. Gross reaches these high spheres, undoubtedly provided by his 8 • Art&Beyond • March/April 2012

intense spirituality. He is a man searching for the essence of life, the meaning of his existence, its inescapable dialect of joy and sadness, drive and hesitation, isolation and hope. Vocation and creation lived to the fullest with a big heart, the heartbeat of a poet, and the steps of man.

In 2005, shortly after Malone discovered his current painting technique, which is now known as Atmospheric Expressionism. Paul Scott purchased an old house in a small desert town outside Tucson, AZ, near the border of Mexico and transformed the house and its garage into an excellent studio. For almost five years he lived there with his two dogs as steady companions, and, painting and drawing almost constantly, he created most of his body of work - hundreds of paintings, drawing, pastels, watercolors and acrylics - that he is now offering to the world. His hometown is Houston, Texas, but then Paul Scott has moved thirty-six times in his life and has lived in numerous parts of the country. His home is now in Glen Rose, TX. Jacqui Morgan When Jacqui Morgan received her BFA from Pratt, she entered a world without any female illustrators. She with BarbaraNessim and Lorraine Fox who passed away very young, were the first and only working female illustrators. During the heyday of the psychedelic, she designed and illustrated the iconic Electric Circus Poster and went on to create more iconic images for the American Optometric Association, Sansui, Scott Printing, Celanese, Exxon, and 7 UP Billboards. Unique covers for American Artist Magazine, Mac Millan Books, Print Magazine and Cosmopolitan along with album covers for RCA, ads for DeBeers diamonds and animated commercials for Burlington Mills and General Mills were among her achievements. She always loved science fiction and illustrated a few anthologies for young readers. Seeking excitement and change, Morgan began to experiment with painting on found objects such as chairs, sofas, shovels and drawers. At one point her living room looked filled to capacity with beautiful amazons seated and reclining when the room was empty. This idea caught the fancy of Playboy Germany to commission a series of illustrations of sofas with celebrities’ seated in conversation such as one with Truman Capote, Jackie Kennedy Onassis and the Duchess of Windsor. Almost simultaneously, unable to wear high heels any longer, but in love with the sculpture of shoes, she moved to include those otherwise useless shoes. Initially she painted the probable wearer on the innersoles and later added nails and other discomforts to the entire shoe. Ah! what women will go through for beauty. These became part of a travelling exhibition Die Verlassesen Schuhe in Germany and Austria as well as illustrations for album covers and magazines. These were recently seen at Gallery 13’s Beauty School Drop-outs exhibition in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After Morgan received her MA from Hunter College, CUNY, she studied realistic oil painting with Sharon Sprung, a student of Harvey Dinnerstein and then applied these findings to watercolor.

Snow White. , Watercolor on Arches. 12” X 12”.

In 1991 she travelled to Japan and Thailand to do a billboard campaign for Dentsu Tokyo on Thai Airlines and Thailand as an ideal vacation destination for the Japanese. This kind of commission is currently rare indeed. When Jacqui Morgan began to teach at the Fashion Institute of Technology she again felt her excitement over making art was on the wane. So she began to simplify her painting process and make it more exciting by painting the figure from life within a maximum twenty to twenty-five minutes. Her product began to be less real and more exaggerated. More juicy and less rendered. The blurr of motion became as important as the third dimension, the drawing quality, and the exchange of negative and positive space. After 2005 she produced three books: Jacqui Morgan’s Journey, a retrospective survey of her work also shown at the Society of Illustrators. In 2010 she produced MOSTLY NUDE, Watercolors from Life, and in 2011 Almost Nude, is also is being sold at the Society of Illustrators.

Oysters in the sky. Digital photography

Guy Belair My passion for photography goes back to thirty years ago during my university education in science and my first and only scientific photography class. Since then, I have been pursuing my skills, mainly in nature photography. For the last 7 years, I have shifted to digital photography and I have participated regularly in contests on this topic, especially in macro photography. Last year, I participate for the first time in an art & craft exhibition to sell my photos. Recently, I became a member of ArtxTerra web site (http://artxterra.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=viewowner&user_id=645&Itemid=101 ) to spread my artistic work. Since 2010, I have started exploring more creative ways of making nature photography using digital techniques, with the objective of maintaining and expressing the spontaneity and freshness of nature photography.

Face. Digital art.

Arthur Jacob Throughout my life I have always had a greater visual sense about how the world looked versus other senses. This visual dominance in perceiving the world has profoundly affected my work as an artist. My art offers an infinite variety of visual perceptions and interpretations for the viewer. The viewer is told what the “real Life” image is in the title of the piece, but through abstraction and reconstruction of that image, the viewer is then asked and challenged to explore the shapes, colors, movements and forms, which the abstraction and reconstruction presents. Colors and shapes become emotion, while form and movement become attitude. Even when a work is easily recognized there is still a predominate thread of color, movement, shape and form. The techniques to achieve these photographic abstractions and reconstructions are a thoughtful and purposeful digital manipulation. Using a mouse rather than a brush to achieve a powerful medium of expression and communication, creates this style of fine art.

Prior to retiring in 2000 and devoting all of my time to photography and digital art, my professional career encompassed activities from social services to becoming involved with marketing, promotion and public relations in three large healthcare corporations. I later became the publisher of a small publishing house in Minneapolis that focused on adult and children’s books that addressed many types of family issues. After leaving the work-a-day world, I moved from Portland to Las Vegas. It was there that I began to promote myself as a serious artist focusing on creativity with photography and digital art. In 2008 I decided to return to the Portland area via Coos Bay where I presently resides. I also have a strong belief that one should be involved in the communities I live in. Putting this belief in to action, I have actively served on several community boards and committees, most recently, the Contemporary Arts Collective in Las Vegas and the Coos Bay Art Museum in Oregon.

Mountain Clouds. Digital Drawing.

Elly Potamianos Displaced to Athens, Greece from a small modest villa on an island across Italy, Argostolion, Kefallinia, Greece, after a devastating earthquake arriving to the US was inevitable. Tutored prior to age five helped in advancing in school and previously knowing the English language. Already noticed and encouraged by teachers and the principal in Greece, to draw the passion continued in all arts. Here in the US, the encouragement was the same by many wonderful teachers in Illinois, with art projects phenomenally full of creativity, and fun. Meeting some master artists at this time was a most exciting treat with an intellectual reciprocation upon interacting that contributed in confidence, creativity, and stretching the imagination beyond. Although, academically advanced and full of originality at a tender age attention was overwhelming as well as, exciting that helped to have a father for a short time prior to his death. He was against exploitation of young children, at the same time stifled by the lack of funds that had depleted due to repeated repositioning. The US, a land of opportunity, hope for our world’s progress, and a supporter the Greek founders of Democracy, helped connect to a conservative with a humble home of necessities. Thus giving artistic ideas and designs when approached to inspire creativity and adding to the rejuvenation of life was gratifying with the exception, and under parental advice, that no artists name be entertained, and when the name was obvious that no copying was to be made. 18 • Art&Beyond • March/April 2012

Since funds were moderate continuing an extensive curriculum in school was not possible. Through competition after finishing high school in the US, studying art continued in Athens, Greece, at the University Politechnion, Anotati Scholin Kalon Technon. Emphasis with the technique of precise measurement for a fundamental base was a great practice in any composition, and medium. Studying the phenomenally precise symmetry in the ancient sculptures and ruins enlightened a more natural interpretation and visual awareness. Due to an overturn in the Greek Government and a friend being removed from his thrown, although, many school friends were ascertained it was best to return to American. Possibilities and offers were available in many sectors of art and entertainment, but a unity that produced two children took precedence at the time. Painting continued at a slower pace, but came to a stop after entering the workforce upon the disunion of the marriage. Although, creativity and art became a small addition to office work, a boardroom level of presentations in a more commercial venue returning to the arts is especially gratifying. Just from scratch or executing the many compositions created in mind, both past and present will dominate new accomplishments. Now, open for commission and exhibition.
