A
rtist Rebekah Joy Plett wrote: “When you buy something from an artist, you’re buying more than an object. You’re buying hundreds of hours of errors and experimentation. You’re buying years of frustration and moments of pure joy. You’re not buying just one thing, you are buying a piece of a heart, a piece of a soul… a small piece of someone else’s life.” Art is created first through the mind, heart and soul of its creator, before the production process begins which is what brings the works to life. While the process is an integral part of the artwork, without the creator’s spirit, it has no life. Like the humans who create it, when they lose their soul, they lose their existence and are left as aging empty vessels. The process of creating an artwork includes, but not limited to, brush strokes, color value and variation, transparency of paint and material, texture, two and three dimensionality, verbiage and of course sound. The digital factor is not an aspect of it, but simply the pure process involved in its creation…a means to achieving the goal of creating an image, which becomes the artwork. I am a photographer and a photography instructor. I love to capture images, which I use to create my collages. My camera is my instrument; the images are my paint; and Photoshop is my brush - a tool and a process with which I create the images I visualize. My art comes from my mind and my heart, and is part of my soul. It can’t break; it doesn’t get old; and it is my life, my love and my spirit, which literally saved my life during difficult and hard times!!! Digital photography is a medium like painting, printing, carving or singing. It is a tool for me, the artist, with which to create. I use it to bring to life the images I visualize. The digital process is a mechanical substitute to the darkroom, which I have worked in for years. I have done many special processes in the darkroom, which I now do with Photoshop. Neither the darkroom nor the digital program creates my images. My images are created by my ability to visualize and my years of experience with the Photoshop program - just like the experience I have with the camera and in others areas of my professional life. When I create, I think about and visualize the images. The images are first created in my mind and my heart before I even open the computer. I don’t think about the digital process, I literally use the program like a brush, which I guide to do what I want it to do! Yes I struggle with it just like any other artist or painter that struggles with the paint, the material, and the tools or the images with which they work. I will redo the image many times, trying different approaches, various compositions, and different colors and values just like any other artist in any other medium. No computer or programs create my imagery. I create my works because the images originate first within me. I am the one that gives the images their spirit, their soul, their life.

I work in the format of a portfolio, creating images on a specific subject matter. The pieces relate to each other and create a gallery of thoughts and ideas. Some of the galleries, especially the latest ones, are very personal, telling my life story, which is quite traumatic. Art has and always will be a lifesaver and is often used as a therapy tool. The day I will no longer have a soul to give my art, is the day I will die!!!!

he world of Digital Art may at first seem to many to be a confusing one, but this fascinating method of creating is rapidly growing in both popularity and acceptance. As a mixed media artist who digitally creates her finished work, I can attest to the numerous questions and general misunderstandings that arise when I try to explain what I do. So, what exactly IS Digital Art? According to Wikipedia, “Digital art is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative or presentation process”. Herein seems to lie the “problem”, perceived by traditionalists and purists who see this art form as less than honest, and much easier to produce. Somehow, despite digital art having been produced extensively since the ‘60’s, (think Andy Warhol and his “Marilyn” works) it is seen by many as, “not real art.” We forget that photography in its infancy had exactly the same accusations levelled at it, yet it has gone on to become much more widely accepted, particularly as an art form. Rather than discuss differences, let’s perhaps look at similarities between traditional art and digital art, to explore where the common ground lies and hopefully help further the case for this modern art form to be seen as valuable in its own right. Firstly, all art must engage the viewer. This is the basic platform from which all artists, no matter what medium, operate from. Whether it be painting, music, photography, or performing arts, without audience engagement you simply haven’t created something that has captured attention.

Secondly, all visual art – that is, photography, painting, digital art – must produce a pleasing composition. In my own art, I focus on balance and placement as an integral part of creating a piece that works. If the composition – the makeup of the piece – is wrong, then although the viewer may not be able to articulate it, the art will feel somehow, “wrong”. Thirdly, if you create in color, then Color Theory should apply.

There is no single rule for “traditional” arts and a different one for Digital Art. Working from these similarities, it’s little surprise that Digital Art (or New Media, as it’s sometimes referred to) has the power to touch the viewer with as much impact as traditional media. The skillset in creating with this medium is certainly not as easy as traditionalists would have you believe. I know from experience the frustration and hours spent searching for the image to reflect my voice…it comes no easier than when I paint using acrylics. While it’s true there is no “undo” button in traditional art, this doesn’t mean the work cannot be repaired, painted over, mistakes used as opportunity. We all make mistakes in our work, no matter which medium we use. I know this from working with both methods. Sometimes, from seemingly impossible images, come wonderful works of art that leave both the artist and audience deeply connected to the image and their own personal meaning they attribute to it. Finally, what IS art? There are probably as many answers to this question as there are people on the planet. It is entirely subjective and deeply personal. For me, good art is the image that makes my heart beat a little faster, and that impacts on a visceral level, connecting me to the work in a place where no words can be found, or even needed. Does it matter that this connection was created from modern technology, or from the

pigment of the earth? Not really. Instead what matters is that allimportant “visual symphony” that touches the soul of the viewer. As technology advances at a rapid rate, so too will the tools used to create art. From scratchings on the walls of caves, we have progressed through the millennia with the desire unchanged; the desire to create and tell stories and have our voices recorded for history to explore. Art has the power to change lives; it has most certainly changed mine. Let’s celebrate this power, and let it continue to shine no matter what the origin.

Manss Aval Manss is an artist and long-time fine art photographer who works and resides in San Diego, California. Inspired by Nature’s patterns and textures his works transform inanimate objects into faces, designs and complete figures that present our environment in a different, more intimate perspective. As primary medium he concentrates on photography, acrylic and oil on canvas, and mixed media techniques. Among his other interests are sculptures, video and film. He has a broad background in media, communications and the sciences (including a Ph.D.). His fine art and photographic work has received many national and international awards. Lynn L. Bell People are fascinating. So many sizes, shapes, colors, temperaments. Even the most mundane scenes often showcase engaging human interaction or quiet solitude. Cast shadows, planes of a face, folds in flesh and years lived make up who we are. My goal is to capture a moment and to celebrate how wonderful we all are in our imperfection.

And as the computer programs have improved, my designs in cut paper collage evolved into digital drawings – I enjoy the immediacy and the precision, and the ability to layer objects and work realistically or in a looser manner.
I’ve been creating and experimenting with design and color since childhood, using various mediums and techniques. I’ve enjoyed watercolor, printmaking, collage and drawing, and explore the areas from realistic to stylized to abstraction.
I’ve won numerous awards for graphic work and paintings, including awards in the Arkansas Arts Council’s Small Works on Paper competition, the juried Midsouthern Watercolor Society exhibitions, and the IABC (International Association of Broadcast Communicators) Bronze Quill Awards.

Sue Eves I am a local artist based at my studio in Art Space Portsmouth. I recently graduated with an M.A. in Fine Art from Chichester University. My work is generally an examination of themes through drawing, painting and digital art. I endeavor to capture moments and places that we might only be vaguely aware of. Portsmouth Cathedral has been an inspirational setting in which to work. I set out to develop an understanding of what this inspirational place meant to me through contemplation, reflection and an exploration of its intimate spaces. My 2 photographs are part of a series of photographs which narrates this experience and explores my growing relationship with the building. I will briefly describe this encounter... The initial photographs are black and white which is suggestive of my 50s upbringing...at this stage I see the cathedral from my point of view. I begin exploring inside...stairs. Their spiral nature speaks to me of repetition and the cyclical nature of our lives. The building begins to speak to me... hence the brilliant, yet still monochrome, ray of light. [ Picture 1 ] I become aware of some great energy, which, through the drowsy, distant, outside sounds manifests itself as a barely perceptible, low hum.Warmth floods through the windows into the nave...Also light... which has the power to illuminate and transform. I seek colour in objects around me and close-up images reveal a texture and pattern that transcends mere shape....light, pouring through the stained glass, creates vivid scenes that swim in and out of consciousness... ephemeral places that hang in the air...suggestive of some half glimpsed world just beyond my understanding. ...a world that is gradually being exposed through periods of quiet contemplation...a world of the sea and the soul and of dedication. Chuck Fletcher Artistically. Reflecting. Reality. Blending elements of lifestyle portraiture and contemporary street photography, Chuck Fletcher (b. 1968) uses a camera to engage people and create wonder about who they are. His unique documentary-shooting style often reflects a personal impression or powerful combinations of action and emotion. Chuck’s professional acumen and deliberate framing of distinctive facial traits elevates his discipline of photographic realism. Chuck’s images are intentionally shot in public where the environment and subject are both dynamic. Theses blended challenges make open air photography an exciting way to transform everyday people, doing artistic things, into community models. They spend time at their log home in Burnsville, NC. Mr. Benowitz has been invited to Morocco by His Majesty, King Mohammed VI, to photo journal his country’s Moussem de TanTan festival. 20,000 tribesmen and foreign dignitaries met for a cultural and professional exchange mission 500 miles south of Casablanca in the Sahara Desert. Ileana Collazo I learned all I needed about creating art as a young girl in my grandmother’s garden—where I sat doing what as an adult I call meditating—that quiet spot became my temple. Many years passed before I began to give birth to the creations conceived in my early daydreams. For a while, I wrote fiction and poetry, but then my mind exploded into a galaxy of colors, shapes, and, movement. I began to paint—small pencil renderings became color temptations that led me down the path to my “Night Gardens Collection”. From there, it was a matter of “following the yellow brick road”. Today I paint flowers, bursts of abstracted shapes and colors, geometrical excursions, digital paintings and digital re-constructions of my paintings, GRAMFFITI (the first graffiti made by a grandma, for which I was baptized: IC the G), and have also embarked on digital photography. I create small worlds of movement, colors, and shapes to entice the observer to travel through my work surface—colliding with the images, finding their way around to yet another shape, and finding it as alluring to linger gazing at them as I still find it to linger in a garden; my work is also representative of the twists, turns, bumps, and alternatives each of us transverses in the course of our daily life. https://www.facebook.com/ileana.collazo.54/photos_albums

Diana Whiley I first created fantasy art to go with my writing and found that the digital medium best fit my style. It took time to get the affect I wanted but I’ve now hopefully managed to get the colour and mood right.

Vered Galor Art has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. It has been my interest, my form of expression and a sociological and psychological outlet to my feelings, opinions and reflection of my existence. In the seventies I have earned an Associate degree in Architecture and two degrees at CSUN - California State University at Northridge California., Bachelor degree in Art and Design and Master degree in Fine Arts. I have been part of the art world for over 40 years as a curator, consultant, educator and mentor while doing my artwork and
teaching photography. As part of my business I have lectured, participated in discussions, wrote art program and encouraged the collaboration of art and Architecture. My artworks spend the spectrum of Sculpture, Poetry, Photography and Collages. I currently create Photographic Digital Collages, in portfolio grouping on a subject matter. The work reflects my observations, feelings, emotions and thoughts; personal, political and historical, as they accumulate and come to life visually in the artwork.

Melissa Ann Lambert I am a Los Angeles based native, self-taught Artist. Frustrated in a “cog-in-the-wheel” job as a Software Engineer at Warner Brothers, I started painting four to five hours a night in late 2002. After producing many abstract traditional media paintings, I decided there’s much more freedom working on the computer and started creating art using that tool.
I create what are essentially “digital collages”, combining drawing into the image with my digital tablet and a variety of digital tools, sometimes incorporating photography. My process involves reading books on science while listening to my stereo on random. Everything from classical to blues to Opera, singer-songwriter, and French rap affect what I do when producing my work.

MOMENTUM.
In addition to being influenced by many artists including Kahlo, Kandinsky, Dorothea Tanning, Remedios Varo, Klee, Rothko, and Van Gogh, I love the latest fantastical discoveries of particle physics, superstring, brain, biotic theory, and Eastern spirituality.

Arthur Jacob His art has received accolades from the Medial Museum in London, England. He is also the recipient of two Awards of Excellence from Manhattan Arts International. Jacob has participated in numerous exhibitions including having a one-person exhibition at the Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica, CA. The Museum of Digital Fine Art selected his work for their online exhibitions. His many juried and group exhibitions include those at: Coastal Arts Museum, CA; Gallery 360, WA; City of Gresham Visual Arts Gallery, OR; Hilton Hotel Gallery, WA; and recently at a juried group exhibition, Pictures In Process, Naples, Florida where he received the award for Best In Show (SUNSET) and a Honorable Mention (WOMAN). Jacob’s creative versatility has propelled his art into many homes and other non-residential spaces. One of his works, Video Display, appeared on HGTV in a segment of Million Dollar Homes. He
produces art in a variety of sizes and substrates, which is attractive to interior designers and architects. Among his many large scale commissioned pieces is an abstract triptych of mixed flowers that measures approximately 7 feet high and nearly 12 feet wide. In addition to his participation in exhibitions and the creation of commissioned works, Jacob has also been included in several printed and online publications, among them Professional Artist, Around Your Home, Art and Beyond Publications, Luxe Beat and Q-Vegas magazines. Ryota Matsumoto Ryota Matsumoto is a principal of an award-winning design office, Ryota Matsumoto Studio based in Tokyo. He is known as an artist and the pioneer of Post-digital Art in Japan. Born in 1972, Ryota was raised in Hong Kong and Tokyo. He received Master of Architecture from University of Pennsylvania in 2007 after studying at Architectural Association in London and Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art in early 90’s. His art and built work are featured in numerous publications and exhibitions internationally. His current interest gravitates around the embodiment of cultural possibilities in art, architecture, and urban topography.
The artworks of Ryota Matsumoto develop and demonstrate the hybrid/multi-layered process, where varying scale, juxtaposition of different forms, intertwined textures/tones are applied to reflect the spatio-temporal conditions of our ever-evolving urban and ecological environments. They are created to act as the catalyst for defining speculative changes in our notions of cities, societies and cultures. Natalya B. Parris has advanced degrees in construction engineering from the Moscow State Construction University. She is a curator, an art instructor and an artist. Both photos were taken in my garden, which is my source for inspiration, rejuvenation and endless photographic possibilities. I spotted butterfly on the flowering onions while pulling the weeds in my vegetable garden. I did not have camera with me and ran into the house praying that the butterfly did not fly away. My effort was rewarded and butterfly was a perfect model; but I learned my lesson – to always take a camera with me when go to the garden. I think my love for my garden is mutual and photograph “Love is in the Air” is a proof of it. LGRACEFUL LANDING, 2012.
