Hatfield Town Cricket Club

We are not too far away from the start of the new exciting season ahead and we are hoping the rains stops for a few days at least so we can finish our ground preparations!

A big thank you to Carl Morrell of CM Developments for his work on our new changing and toilet facilities and all those businesses and club members who have donated funds, equipment or time to help us make this affordable.

Junior Indoor training has been well attended, it is great to see the commitment of the children and we would always welcome more children in every age group when we move outside in April. We look forward to seeing everyone back at our Friday Family Nights in early April, please keep an eye out on our social media for confirmed dates and times. We hope you will all be pleased with the improvements made around the ground.

This season our ladies team will also be training Friday evenings 7-8:00pm and competing in the Hardball League and having Softball friendlies. They are looking for ladies to come and join the squad. There is no experience necessary as we will have a qualified coach and experienced player at each session. You can use it purely as fitness or push onto taking part in the games, taking it at your own pace.

Our senior men’s games start at home on the 20th April and it will be great to see new faces as well as our regulars down at Carr Side Lane supporting them, see you all soon!'

Friends of Quarry Park

Our Litter Pick for the KBT Great British Spring Clean took place on Saturday 16th March. Keeping the park litter-free is great for the environment plus it's one of the criteria to keep our Green Flag flying so it is very important to us to participate in this event each year. Our army of 12 set off around the park, and an hour and a half later, we had collected 14 bags of rubbish including a trolley, a radiator valve, and a small box of tools!

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers who joined us for our Work Party on Friday 5th April. Thankfully the rain had stopped and 15 of us and a junior volunteer, along with our Ranger Sam gathered in the sunshine eager to complete our tasks. As always there was plenty to do so after our welcome and briefing, we split into groups and got started. Our superefficient litter pickers cleared 4 bags of litter from around the Broadway area, as well as other areas of the park which resulted in a total of six bags collected. Two teams installed a replacement bench at Church View which had been damaged recently and re-installed the Home Straight sign that had collapsed due to rotten posts. The remaining crew set about mulching the new tree saplings that were planted in December and March, with digestate. This was kindly donated by Vulcan Renewables, who also funded some of our trees through their Community Funding Scheme. It was quite a smelly job, but someone had to do it! We look forward to seeing our trees flourish in the coming months after a good feed.

We finished our session with refreshments and cakes before heading home. A great morning’s work by all involved.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 3rd May and Friday 7th June 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Here we are, well into Spring and we hope by the time you read this that warm sunshine is the norm after what seems like months of rain!

We are delighted to say we have donated half the cost of a Nasendoscopy system (£35,000) to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, with DRI paying the remainder. This system will support their Speech and Language therapists in undertaking examination of the nose, throat and voice box and is a test that is used to identify cancers and support patients who have had cancer. We have been very fortunate in receiving money from two recent wills. We are in talks with DRI as to other equipment they need and we will bring you news of this hopefully next month. In the meantime we are very grateful to all our fundraisers who do a tremendous job in raising money on our behalf. Some of you do energetic sports for sponsorship, others take a more leisurely approach. Whatever you do on our behalf we are really grateful. If you could send us a photograph with a short write-up we will do our best to include it on our website.

Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.

Our charity believes local money should help local people. All money raised goes towards equipment for our local hospitals. None of our staff are paid, we are all volunteers.

National award recognises “inspirational” wellbeing work at Sheep Dip Lane Academy

A Dunscroft academy which champions the emotional wellbeing of its pupils has been recognised with a national award.

Sheep Dip Lane Academy in Dunscroft near Doncaster has received the School of Excellence Award from Thrive, an organisation which trains teachers and other education professionals to support the social and emotional development of children and young people. The award is the highest level of achievement for schools using the Thrive Approach, which helps school staff to understand young people’s behaviour and build positive relationships that remove barriers to learning and improve attendance, behaviour and attainment.

The school, which has 244 pupils, is at the heart of a former mining community with high levels of unemployment, with 55 per cent of pupils in receipt of free school meals. The award was made following a rigorous assessment process, which included the school submitting an in-depth evidence and impact application form and a visit by Thrive staff to observe and assess the way that teachers and other staff implement the Thrive Approach.

Thrive’s School of Excellence award recognises extraordinary schools which are making a positive impact on their pupils, and on the wider community, by prioritising emotional wellbeing. The School of Excellence award is the highest level of achievement in Thrive’s Ambassador Schools scheme, which was launched in 2020 as a way of recognising excellence in member schools.

“We are extremely proud to have been awarded the School of Excellence Award,” said Vice Principal Alison Parkhurst.

Sheep Dip Lane Academy began using the Thrive Approach in 2014, with three members of staff being trained as licensed practitioners.

Alison explained: “At this time, we had a number of children who were struggling to regulate their emotions and demonstrating they were not ready for academic learning. It felt at times like we were ‘firefighting’ behaviour without sustained impact.

“Following training, we set up a Thrive provision to carry out one-to-one and small group reparative work with our learners outside the classroom. Great success followed, with children being integrated back into the classroom and going on to achieve age-related expectations alongside their peers.”

Since then, more staff members have been trained in the approach so that every pupil can benefit. “The majority of our work now focuses on ‘right time’ development in order to prepare our children for the future, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they will need for adult life,” Alison added.

Anna Smee, managing director of Thrive, said: “Sheep Dip Lane Academy is an inspirational school where staff have placed mental wellbeing at the heart of school life.

“Relationships between staff and pupils are strong and this has created a culture of wellbeing that means children feel calm, emotionally-regulated and ready to learn. Staff are committed to embedding mental health at the heart of school life and they richly deserve this achievement. This award recognises that amazing work and if very well deserved.”

Thrive has been working in partnership with educators and organisations to help young people feel safe, supported and ready to learn since 1994. With its focus on building secure relationships and providing positive experiences, the Thrive Approach has been proven to improve behaviour, attendance and learning outcomes. Over 795,500 young lives have been positively impacted by the Thrive Approach.
