DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. Philip Caine was our guest speaker on Monday September 16 with his presentation of “From Barrow to Baghdad”. We were treated to a quickfire presentation chronicling Philip’s career starting as a chef in Barrow in Furness, through his contract work on North Sea Oil Rigs as chef and later in project management, and onto project management jobs in locations including Algeria, Nigeria, Baghdad and Kazakstan. And then after problems arising from the international financial crisis of 2008, and further project management work, Philip turned his hand to writing, and has now completed and published several novel, two of which have been taken up for serialised TV production. This was the story of a man who uses every minute of time doing something, and very hectic life it has been, making for a very full presentation. Malcolm Frost was our speaker on Monday 7October, with his presentation “Cock o’ the North”. This is the story of how a group of enthusiasts are recreating one of Sir Nigel Gresley’s steam engines which was built in Doncaster specially for the Edinburgh to Aberdeen line which features steep gradients. Malcolm told us about the recovery of the original drawings and how they had been converted so that modern engineering methods could be used in building the new engine. making the pieces for the engine has begun but there is still a long way to go. Wednesday 18 September was the occasion of Danum Probus Bowls Lunch at Kilham Hall Community Centre, Branton, when after an excellent buffet lunch, trophies were presented to the winners of the various competitions. The winners were: Individual Peter Oldale; Doubles, Geoff Firth and Arthur Kendrick and Kelly Cup, George Kirk. In November our speakers will be Mick Burdis with “The Stephen Lawrence Enquiry” on the 4th, and on 18th Keith Lumley with “Breaching the Beaches and Landings”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

Autumn at Thorne Camera Club The new season got under way with a social evening at the Punch Bowl, well attended by members and guests. The Summer holidays and the Autumn Programme were among the topics of discussion, as members readied themselves for the busy months ahead. New members are welcomed, and the first visit is free of charge, so if you have an interest in Photography, go along and see for yourself. Meetings are on a Monday evening starting 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, arrive early and introduce yourself. A Blast from the Past was the order of the day at the first meeting, a very retro presentation. Using an old fashioned slide projector, a little temperamental in its old age, images from the past were shown in the old fashioned way. Many of you will remember the days of darkened rooms and a slide show of holiday pictures, especially when foreign travel was a real novelty. Luckily, there was also a modern digital projector and members brought their more recent digital images to share with others as well. Brian Crossland LRPS came along from Barnsley to judge the first competition of the season. The theme was Waterfalls, inspired by a club outing to the Yorkshire Dales where a number of waterfalls were available to photograph for those able or willing to clamber around to get the best shot. Some excellent photographs were presented to Brian for his opinion, and, spoilt for choice, he eventually chose ‘River Falls’ by Terry Gunnill first, with another by Terry, ‘West Burton 2’ runner-up. As third Jackie Woodward’s ‘Crystal Clear Water’. Highly Commended were David Ulyett, Lynda Ulyett and Jackie Woodward, Commended were Michael Ferrand, Lynda Rhodes, Colin Jarvis and Malcolm Hayes. The photos in the Open section were many and varied, as just about anything goes in the Open. Chosen first was David Ulyett’s ‘Shores of Loch Long’ with Bill Mitchell’s ‘Hoverfly’ second and Lynda Rhodes ‘The Potting Shed’ third. In this section those Highly Commended were Terry Lockwood, Colin Jarvis, and David Ulyett and Commended were Trevor Holt and Malcolm Hayes. Unfortunately, a meeting had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, and apologies go to anyone who turned up at the Methodist Church that night expecting to attend. Please don’t be put off, and please try again. There are lots of interesting activities planned in the coming months, with some invited speakers and, of course, competitions. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Chairman, David, on 07463821182, email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

Introducing ‘The Vaults’ Hirst Priory has a well-kept secret that is now ready to share. Hidden beneath the oldest part of the house is the most amazing atmospheric vaulted brick basement – “The Vaults”. Now expertly and sensitively refurbished, the subterranean rooms are open to visitors and offer a very special place for intimate and bespoke weddings and events. The Vaults ceremony room is perfect for smaller weddings and can accommodate up to 40 guests. In addition to wedding hire the venue is introducing a private members club, and offering exclusive pre-booked dining and wine bar experiences. A relaxed platter and small plates style menu has been developed working with “Taste Lincolnshire” to ensure the use of locally sourced ingredients where possible. Hazel Wheatley, Managing Director of Hirst Priory and The Vaults commented “We know we have something very special indeed at The Vaults – and I love seeing the reactions of our guests when they first discover these hidden spaces. I’m really looking forward to being able to share the experience with new visitors – cosy winter weddings, delicious sharing platters and personally selected gin and wine menus.”

Community News It's Time to Reflect upon a on Long and Busy Season at HTCC. Despite losing their final fixtures the 1st and 2nd XI's were able to look back on seasons that expected all expectations. The 1st XI finished 2nd and achieved promotion from Division 2 With several of the younger players producing good performances throughout the season and the mid-season signings of Tommy Hyde and Dave Barrett adding further strength to the squad they will be hoping to consolidate in Division 1 next season. The 2nd XI fielded several juniors throughout the season and they all contributed to helping the side tie in 2nd place in Division 5. Young bowlers Josh Platt and Andy Decent, were particularly impressive in taking the league junior bowling honours. They await the league organising next seasons fixtures before knowing which division they will compete in next season. The Sunday League side finished unbeaten to top their Division, in their final fixture they showed great spirit with a sensational comeback to tie with a strong Meborough side, both teams ending 211-9 off 40 overs. It's been a great season by the side made up of players from across all our other sides, a couple of guest players and the juniors again playing regularly and contributing well. The Evening League side finished an unfortunate 2nd in the league when their final fixture was rained off but had more success when winning the Evening Cup in a dark and damp finish at Town Fields against Bentley CC. Well done lads! The Ladies team finished 3rd in their summer tournament and began their indoor fixtures with one win and one defeat in their opening fixtures. Its been great to see the youngsters taking part and doing so well to complement the existing squad. Their participation will hopefully encourage more youngsters to join the squad and provide the team with a long term future. All our junior sides acquitted themselves well throughout the season from Under 9 to Under 13's they have been a pleasure to coach and watch they are a great set of kids for the club and parents to be proud of. The All-Stars programme was a great success with 25 youngsters all enjoying their weekly sessions it was great to see. None of this is possible without the support of our local business sponsors, coaches, captains, parents and our tireless volunteers who work throughout the year to make us a true community club. A massive Thank You to every person that has contributed in any way this season.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Here we are hurtling towards the end of the year and preparations have gathered pace for our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate….see below. We have received donations from some wonderful people who have taken our prostate cancer appeal to heart. Darren held a coffee morning in his garden (with marquees to shelter from the rain!), plus a raffle with prizes donated from local firms, and raised £550! Thank you so much for all your hard work. We have had donations from people celebrating special birthdays and anniversaries and requesting donations in lieu of presents. Our regular coffee morning ladies in Hatfield also continue to support us for which we are very grateful. Space limits us to mention everyone, but all our latest news is on the website, although we appreciate not everyone has a computer. At the time of writing (early October) we had reached £33,200. Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre starts Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We hope to be downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. We have chosen some lovely new tree decorations this year so please come along and see us, have a chat and buy a token in memory of your loved one. If you have any fundraising ideas or would like to be a volunteer please do get in touch with us. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk.
