Welcome to the February 2021 issue of the Barnby Dun & Edenthorpe Arrow I hope everyone is keeping as safe and as well as they can during these strange times. Unfortunately we are back in lockdown and it seems coronavirus levels in Doncaster are as high as they have ever been at the moment. Please stick to the rules and regulations, keep your distance and protect our NHS and each other. The deadline for articles and adverts for the March issue is Friday 12th February.

Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough to move to Freephone number for clients seeking help by phone Thanks to national funding via the Government through BEISS, clients phoning Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough will be able to use a new freephone number from 1st February 2021. Previously calls to 0344 499 4137 were charged at local rate and were often - but not always - included in clients’ inclusive minutes. Karen Bothamley, CEO of Citizens Advice said, “We are very pleased to be able to offer clients a freephone number to call to access advice. Thanks to new funding we are able to ensure everyone is able to get help no matter what their financial circumstances are. This is especially important during the pandemic and lockdown when have had to move to telephone, email, video and webchat advice rather than being able to see clients face to face.”

The New Free Local Adviceline Number is 0808 278 7955 with effect from 1st February 2021 The existing number will continue to work and a recorded message will give people the option to continue with their call or to ring back on the new freephone number. Anyone needing help can also ring the national Citizens Adviceline free on 0800 144 8848 Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough is a registered charity number 1174228 providing free, confidential, independent and impartial advice. Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority no. 786825

Community News Friends of Quarry Park As we moved into 2021 and another lockdown our January Work Party was cancelled but we didn't let that dampen our spirits and our willing volunteers continue to keep their watchful eyes on Quarry Park doing solo or sometimes double socially distanced litter picks to keep the Park looking clean and smart, 5 bags of litter were removed in early January. Keep Britain Tidy have already announced the dates for their Annual Spring Litter Pick Campaign which The Friends group will be involved with again this year. It will run from Friday 28th May to Sunday 13th June. Our event will probably be Friday 4th of June but watch this space for more details nearer the time or visit our Friends of Quarry Park Facebook page and look at the fabulous photos our visitors and volunteers post on there. It may be cold outside but we've already seen the first eager, green shoots of Spring flowers peeping through on Quarry Park so that's something to look forward to in these challenging times. Keep safe everyone and enjoy our lovely, local outside space, Quarry Park, respectfully and safely, we’re very lucky to have it on our doorstep. Photographs of the bulbs and a lovely sunset taken by Karen.

Changes to The Point for an improved welcome darts (Doncaster’s participatory arts organisation) is making some upgrades to its building, The Point, to ensure an improved welcome once the doors can open to the public again. The Point has been closed to the general public since March last year, but building work is currently underway to make some big changes so the reception area becomes more accessible, friendly and welcoming. The Point is located in central Doncaster opposite the Regent Hotel on South Parade. The project, which is being funded by grants from FCC Communities Foundation and The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation, will create a new ramped entrance to the building to open up the space and remove barriers so there is more room for people to get in and out, and for social distancing. The Point will also be given a fresh coat of paint and new signage both outside and throughout the building to help people get around. CEO, Duncan Robertshaw says “We are delighted that the project is taking shape. The new area and signage will make a huge difference for those who are less mobile or have other communication or access needs. It can be tricky to draw attention to our building as we are limited by its Grade II listed status, but we are confident that the new external signage and fresh paint will bring in new visitors once we open again to the public. We are really grateful to our funders for investing in our vital community facility.” darts is working with Eleven Design from Sheffield to create the new signage. Eleven designed a new brand for darts and The Point as part of darts’ 30th birthday celebrations in 2020. The changes include some bright new colours and patterns on the walls and some new visual surprises in some of the rooms. FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund. FCC Communities Foundation Grant Manager Sophie Cade says: “We are pleased to be able to support the redevelopment of the entrance area at The Point so that this fantastic community facility can once again open its doors to the public.”

Virtual Visitors to Thorne Camera Club Although missing the social activities of the Camera Club, the Autumn programme continued more or less as usual, via Zoom online. Because of this, members enjoyed an evening with Julian Elliott, a photographer based in the Loire region of France. Julian specialises in landscape photography, in France, and world wide. His presentation ‘ A Japanese Autumn’ featured architecture and autumn colour in Japan. Julian’s relaxed style, tales of his travels, and later, answers to members’ questions about various aspects of photography made an interesting evening. Being a professional and commercial photographer, he gave an insight into his work, and members learnt a lot. Competitions transfer well to Zoom, so Caroline Preece LRPS , a judge who usually lives and works in London, spoke from her retreat on the South Coast, where she was staying with her parents, avoiding the Covid pandemic. The images, sent to her prior to the meeting, were studied at her leisure before making any decisions. A younger judge than usual, Caroline has a very individual approach, is very observant and articulate. She also had a notation tool, used frequently to explain where and how we could improve our photography. She enjoyed scribbling on our images, virtually, of course, to demonstrate her points. Eventually Caroline made her choices, giving Mike Donnison both a first and a third place with ‘Underneath a Giant’ and ‘Hocus Pocus’, Jan Sharp second place with ‘Hans, a Dutch Miner’. June Horbury’s ‘ Uluru Water Hole’ was Highly Commended and Graham Linley twice, with ‘ Turbines’ and ‘Scary Eyes’. Commended went to Jean Goodburne ‘ Grass Snake’ and June Horbury ‘Remembrance Day in Lockdown’. Sadly, many other really good photos did not make the final selection, but everyone is to be congratulated on their entries. The new Postal circle ( which isn’t often sent by post!! ) continues, with some interesting prints for members to enjoy, and comment on if they wish. It can be a place to gain advice before entering an image into a competition, to try something new, or just share your memories with like minded people. The Spring Programme will take a similar form until such time as normal meetings are able to resume. Hopefully, with the roll out of the vaccine, this won’t be very long, and anyone interested in joining the group will be very welcome. Contact 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk
