There are also many more reasons why shopping locally can be of benefit to you and to the local businesses. The deadline for the September issue is Tuesday 16th August. Please send any information you would like including.

Community News Hello and welcome to a summer crime prevention article. Hopefully the weather will be even sunnier and warmer in the coming months and we can take advantage and spend more time outside. While you are outside in your garden, you want to make sure that unwanted visitors do not get into your house. You may leave windows and doors open to let any fresh air circulate your home if it becomes too hot, but sadly, thieves are looking for opportunities like that. The old saying ‘An open window or door is an invitation to a thief’ is still relevant. Never sit in the back garden with your front door unlocked. In fact, always keep your front door unlocked even when you are in the house. Do not leave ground floor windows or other easily accessible windows open in a room if you or someone else in your family is not in that room. Always shut and lock windows if you leave a room. Do not leave any articles on a windowsill in a room especially car or house keys even if you or someone else is in that room. If you are enjoying the rear garden and everyone is sat outside, always make sure you can see if anyone enters your house by the back door. We have had thieves sneak into houses via the back door even when families are enjoying a barbecue out in the garden. When some people go on holiday, they post pictures on social media of them enjoying themselves socialising or admiring the scenery. Be careful about broadcasting that your house is empty. Personally, I would rather share pictures of my holiday when I have returned home. It may lose the impact but it does not advertise the fact that I am away from home. Always ask a member of your family or a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your house if you go away. They can put out and return your bin if necessary and very importantly move any parcel that may have arrived by Courier delivery and been left by your front door. If you are expecting a parcel delivery, consider redirecting it to a local collection hub or to your trusted neighbour. That reduces the danger of leaving a parcel on open display to any passing thief. If you are tidying up your garden and using power or hand tools, do not leave them unattended in your front garden. If you take a break and go into the house or rear garden, do not leave the tools in the front garden. Thieves can and have simply walked off with lawnmowers and expensive hedge trimmers. Thieves can also use hand tools to gain entry to your property. A garden spade makes an ideal crowbar and they have been used in the past to smash glass and force open doors and windows. You can enjoy the summer and relax without the worry of crime by taking a few simple precautions. Friends of Quarry Park We had another great turnout for our Volunteer Work Party on Friday 1st July. Rain had been forecast but it was a beautiful morning with lots of sunshine. There were 12 volunteers in total along with our DMBC Rangers. We were joined by 4 rangers to begin with, two came first thing to remove an unsafe tree from the woods which was a potential hazard before going on to another job. The remaining two put up our new bird box which had been donated to the Friends by Natural England. It’s unlikely we will get any birds in the box for a while but hopefully they will be checking it out over the coming months and with a bit of luck we’ll get some nesting birds in there! A small army of litter pickers did a great job collecting four big bags of rubbish and a large reel of wire. We all enjoyed a well-deserved break for refreshments, which included delicious gingerbread supplied by Debra. We really look forward to seeing what sweet treats she brings along each month!! We then continued the cutting back of overgrown vegetation around the car park, removing dead branches, and general tidying up around benches and sign boards. Another successful morning’s work by everyone. There are a couple of events taking place over the coming weeks - The Orienteering Event, in conjunction with DMBC Rangers, will take place on the park on Monday 8th August 11am-1pm. And possibly a Mumblers’ School Holiday Trail. Further details will be published on our Facebook page in due course. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 5th August and Friday 2nd September at 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is a group of people who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Doncaster Sports Club, Bennethorpe, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At the meeting on Monday 4 July we welcomed Mick Brand from the Victoria Cross Trust to talk mainly about the first World War from the ordinary foot soldiers point of view. He told us about how lots of soldiers had volunteered in the first months of the War, many of whom had been in boring and/or physically demanding jobs in civilian life, and against what were thought to be all the odds, had had a distinguished military “career”. MIck came with an array of soldiers’ equipment of the time, including a Webley Revolver, a Lee Enfield .303 rifle with fixed bayonet, together with a soldier’s uniform and all the other equipment they had to carry. Mick answered questions throughout the presentation, and this was followed with a good discussion which featured many of our members who had been in the Forces in their early lives. In August, the two Monday meetings will on the 1st and 15th of the month. Mike Ogden will speak about the “Hotels in the Sky” on the 1st and Pete Dodd will tell us about “The Queens Bodyguard” on the 21st”. Anyone who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please contact David Allen (07395 128759) for more information or e-mail enquiries@danumprobus.co.uk

Edenthorpe Juniors Girls Football We provide opportunities for children within the community aged 5-18 to learn, develop and express themselves whilst having fun and making friends. Edenthorpe Juniors is a 2 Star FA Accredited club that has FA qualified coaches providing football training. The club is based in Edenthorpe (just off Marian Road at The Howard Pavilion). We are fortunate enough to have excellent facilities and equipment & we continue to invest in all aspects of the club, ensuring the best for the community. Girl’s Football Opportunities For Fun Since September 2021, the club has been working to providing football sessions specifically for girls (Saturday 9.00-10.00 am). The club has also been successful in becoming an FA Wildcats and FA Squad Centre - providing new footballers the opportunity to play, have fun and make friends (ages 5-14). There’s been inspirational Women’s football taking place in the European Championships throughout July. Why not bring your daughter along to one of our fun sessions and start their football journey, making new friends along the way. Sessions re-commence August 20th and can be found via our Facebook page or by googling FA Events. Competition As a result of the success of the Saturday morning sessions we have been able to develop several competitive teams from U9’s-U11’s & an U13’s team. These teams will be part of the brand-new Saturday Doncaster Girls Football league which starts in September 2022. We are also keen to try and develop more age groups and add to the existing teams so please do get in touch to see what we can offer. We also try to put events together for the girls such as organising tickets for Women’s England International matches which the girls just love Our club are always looking for new players to join us whether it’s just for fun or competitive, whether your child is a beginner, has played before or is wanting to try something completely new we can provide a supportive and friendly environment to help your child thrive and fall in love with the sport.
