Welcome to the April 2021 issue of the Barnby Dun & Edenthorpe Arrow

As things slowly start getting back to some kind of normal and restrictions are beginning to ease, please remember to support your local businesses. Local businesses make a positive impact to the local economy, they support communities and job creation, they are often sustainable shopping alternatives and are more likely to put customer service first. There are many more reasons why shopping locally can be of benefit to you and to the local businesses. The deadline for the May issue is Thursday 15th April. Best wishes

Community News Friends of Quarry Park

Spring has officially sprung on Quarry Park and we certainly have lots of evidence of it from the dancing daffodils, sweet snowdrops & cute catkins to the beautiful butterflies and lovely ladybirds, all a joy to see! But don't take my word for it come and see for yourself. The Friends of Quarry Park are very proud and pleased to announce that one of our committee members, Karen, has completed her online training in Litter Picking & Environmental Maintenance and has been awarded a certificate. We can definitely vouch for the fact that she 'always gets her litter', reaching, stretching & extracting it from the most awkward of places. She has been a regular picker for some years now on Quarry Park and is so deserving of her achievement, well done Karen! If only we had a silver-plated litter picker to give her. She’s not always alone so thanks to all the pickers who keep the Park tidy. We may not currently be able to carry out our usual Monthly Work Parties but in the mean time we have all been looking after Quarry Park individually or in socially distanced pairs and hopefully our Work Parties will re-commence soon, when it’s safe to do so. Dates will be announced on our Facebook page. Calling all Community Bug Hunters! Quarry Park is pleased to support the Doncaster Mumbler group COMMUNITY BUG HUNT event which is taking place in 5 locations across Doncaster from Mon 15th Mar - 12th Apr. We’re sure that all the children will enjoy solving the 9 hidden clues provided on posters displayed around the Park whilst enjoying the fresh air. The BIG question is, will Dennis the Detective Bee find Kevin the Caterpillar? There are various ways to get involved - visit Doncaster Mumblers website (www.doncaster.mumbler.co.uk) or their Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/doncastermumbler), look on The Friends of Quarry Park Facebook page, see our notice boards or go to the Park & scan the QR code where you can access all sorts of interesting bug information, crafts and activities. You can also claim a free book for 0 - 5-year-olds. Happy Bug Hunting…. Katrina, FoQP Chairman.

DONCASTER WHEATSHEAF SINGERS REUNION UPDATE It is with sadness and regret that the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers have to announce that the plans to hold their delayed 70th Anniversary Reunion on 12th June 2021 have once again had to been cancelled due to the latest Covid-19 Government restrictions. As this reunion of past and present members and associates was originally due to take place during the anniversary year in 2020 it was felt that a further postponement, rather than cancellation, was no longer an option. Who knows, maybe we could host a 75th Anniversary Reunion in 2025! The choir are, however, hoping that some concerts, including the Charity Christmas Concert at the Minster, may begin in the Autumn/Winter of this year if all restrictions are lifted as planned. The choir are looking forward to face to face rehearsals commencing in May or June when guidance allows under the baton of their new Musical Director Ray Gallagher. Ray brings with him a wealth of musical expertise and experience and is no stranger to the choir as he has previously deputised as their accompanist. If anyone is interested in joining the DWS when rehearsals begin please feel free to contact their Chairperson Dorothy Miller on 07703358889 or Email: sec@wheatsheafsingers.co.uk for further information. Visit our website on www.wheatsheafsingers.co.uk or our Facebook page on Facebook.com@DWSingers Like us, I am sure there are a number of people who cannot wait to get out and start singing or attending concerts. In the meantime please stay safe and well until we can all meet up again.

Doncaster Carer’s Group – for all age carers Hello Everyone Family carers provide care by looking after a frail, ill or a disabled family member, friend or partner. At the beginning of April 2020 (during lockdown) a group of carers from Doncaster formed an All Age Carer’s Action Group via monthly Zoom meetings where we discuss various topics. This is a great opportunity to keep connected and updated when speakers (NHS, Local Authority & other organisations) attend with useful information for carers e.g. Carers nominated card, Family Carer PPE, Parent carer pathway and Short breaks. A Carer voice diary about a carer’s life during lockdown was completed for Radio Sheffield. The “Voice of the carer” was an article provided to the free press by some group members. We need your views to ensure we focus on the most important things for carers with live-in experience. Our voices have been heard and changes have been made to help carers. Current and former carers can join our meeting even if you only have 10 minutes to spare, or if you want to talk to someone about your caring role please contact: Doncaster Carer’s Reach Out service – 01302 986900 or email: enquiries@makingspace.co.uk who provide support for our group to make this happen. Meetings for 2021 from 10am-12noon on: April 20th / May 17th / June 15th / July 20th / August 17th / September 21th / October 19th / November 16th / December 21st. Hope to see you soon Kay - Chair, Geoff - Co-Chair

Visitors from Afar at Thorne Camera Club All the way from Leicestershire, via Zoom, Vincent Scothern DPAGB EFIAP BPE3 PPSA came to judge the latest competition. In spite of the lockdown, members entered a total of 54 images on open subjects, which kept Vin busy for a good two hours, even though he had viewed the images prior to the competition. His favourite image of the night was ‘Danger, Man at Work’ by Jan Sharp, followed by Terry Gunnill’s ‘ Dusk over Flooded Moorland’. Mike Farrand’s image ‘ Boudoir’ was third. Highly Commended were Terry Gunnill (2) Mike Farrand (2) and Commended were Jackie Woodward, Mike Donnison and Bill Mitchell. Another competition coming soon will be the Sheffield Photographic Society Annual Inter Club Knock Out, which the Club has entered for the last few years. Having come 22nd out of 29 clubs the first year, and 14th out of 28 the third year, they are hoping for a good placing again, although the competition is tough with up to 30 clubs, including some of the best in the area, taking part. Instead of St Luke’s Church, it will take place on Zoom this year, on Saturday March 20th. Each club must enter 5 images by 5 different members, plus a tie breaker. The images chosen to represent Thorne Camera Club are : Danger Man at Work, Hocus Pocus, Seventh Heaven, A Friend in a Bottle, Millenium Bridge and Grass Snake. Some visitors come in pairs, as do Guy Davies ARPS EFIAP EPSA and Paula Davies FRPS CPAGB EFIAP/s EPSA from Stokesley in North Yorkshire. ‘Double Exposure’ it certainly was as this photographic couple displayed their work. Some fantastic images of the Isles of Harris and Lewis inspired ideas for summer staycations, and Guy’s collection of amazing staircases showed that you can find interesting subjects anywhere. Also in March, a very well known photographer, Margaret Salisbury, FRPS, APAGB, MFIAP, AWPF will be appearing via Zoom from her home in Prestatyn, N. Wales. Normally the cost of travel and accommodation would prohibit the club from meeting ‘the Dragon Lady,’ so this is one of the up sides to the lock down and meetings on Zoom. She will be showing some of her many monochrome images. In view of the Government’s review of the situation, some Flat Roofs, Repairs, Slates, Tiles, summer outings are being planned, socially Guttering, Fascia’s, Chimneys. distanced of course, Competitive Rates more meetings on No Job Too Small Zoom and hopefully a more normal 01302 858164 Autumn. RSPCA – Fostering love Theresa was found living in awful conditions with old injuries left to heal without treatment. It was clear that she would need substantial help and fast. Theresa was unable to walk on her front leg due to an old injury that had caused her bones to fuse together incorrectly. Not only was this painful for Theresa but it was also having a detrimental effect on her ability to walk. Theresa was taken to RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre timid and in pain. It was determined by Peak Vets that Theresa would have a better chance at a happy life if the fused leg was amputated. Theresa recovered from the operation with RSPCA foster carers and her sweet and affectionate nature shone through. In fact they soon realised she was part of the family – permanently. Although she has a way to go, Theresa is making leaps and bounds in her mobility and is now able to enjoy her walks again; all with her new forever family. The local RSPCA Centre is looking forward to re-opening charity shops and offering centre services such as dog training as soon as allowed under the Government road map. The team continue to rehabilitate and re-home local animals in need as they have done throughout the pandemic. There are many ways to help the RSPCA mission including volunteering, leaving a legacy, donating cash or goods, sponsoring through the Safe Haven programme and attending events. There are charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay shop. There is a pet supplies store at the Animal Centre and online. There is also a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.
