WELCOME

Looking back at the welcome note for last month I mentioned how cold it was and asked that you keep an eye out for vulnerable neighbours. What a difference a month makes! As I write this welcome note, we have seen temperatures rise to a record level for February! However, the mornings and nights remain cold so do be careful. This is our fourth edition of this magazine and we are delighted with the response from our advertisers and readers and extremely grateful to both. If you would like to advertise or write for this magazine then please get in touch. As we have mentioned before, this is the only magazine that exclusively covers the Beaulieu 4

and Channels estates. So, it is truly a community magazine for your community. If you can support any of the advertisers in this magazine then please give them a call and do mention that you saw their advert in this magazine. Don’t forget it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday March 31st. Maybe treat Mum to some flowers or a nice lunch. We have both covered in this edition so have made it easy for you! Finally, let’s hope England do better against Italy and Scotland!

From everyone at Around Town Magazines

LOCAL MP

I

Update From The Local MP

I was very honoured to be elected as the new Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Infrastructure. This brings together members of parliament from many different political parties who have an interest in delivering infrastructure projects. In Chelmsford, infrastructure is a very important matter. The City of Chelmsford has grown considerably. It is right that we try to deliver more homes especially for young people, however we also need the infrastructure to go with it. In Chelmsford, I have been working with representatives of the Parish, City and County councils at the meetings of the Army and Navy Task Force which we set up last Autumn. Expert engineers and highways planning specialists have drawn up a wide range of suggestions of potential long-term alternatives to the current flyover and roundabout. It is important that local people and organisations have their voices heard, so local stakeholder consultation meetings are being planned. It is going to take a number of years to design, plan and then construct any new scheme, it is important to get this right. There is also progress being made on internet safety and I was very pleased that my Science and Technology Select Committee published our report on the Mental Health Impact of Social Media on Young People. We worked on this report for many months taking evidence from experts, tech companies, community groups and directly from young people in many schools and youth groups. We strongly recommend that there needs to be stricter regulation of social media companies and a “duty of care” obligation by the companies towards those young people who use their platform. The tragic case of Molly Russell, who took her own life, has reinforced how important it is not to delay. The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock has already written to companies demanding they take action. Government is due to publish its own recommendations for changes to the law very soon. This month, I also attended the passing out parade for the latest recruits to Essex police. These new

officers join the 150 additional officers which were added to the Essex force last year and will be part of a further additional increase of 240 officers for this year. Our police force in Chelmsford have been working exceptionally hard, especially to combat drug related crime and theft. In the last quarter of 2018 they performed 500 stop and searches in Chelmsford which is up from 80 in the same period for the previous year. One third of these stop and searches resulted in positive outcomes. They have also made numerous arrests, including of one persistent car thief. There is very helpful advice on how to protect yourself, your family and your possessions from crime on the Essex police website. It is well worth a quick read to check that you have all the latest info. In Chelmsford, I am often contacted by residents who have problems with difficult landlords or housebuilders who have failed to build to an acceptable standard. The Government has recently announced plans for a New Homes Ombudsman so that buyers of new build homes can access fair, fast and effective redress if things go wrong. There will also be a new Housing Complaints Resolution Service, as well as access to redress for leaseholders, private tenants and students in privately run accommodation. We have also just voted on a new Tenant Fees Bill which will put an end to unfair letting fees and hidden charges. This will make it easier for tenants to find a property at a price they are willing to pay and save renters an estimated £240 million in the first year alone. In Westminster, the Brexit discussions continue. Local businesses in Chelmsford have told me they are increasingly concerned about the uncertainty of a “no deal” exit. I will continue to support the withdrawal agreement. It’s been very good to be out knocking on doors across Chelmsford recently, joining some of our local councillors, and listening to views on local issues.

If you have an issue you would like me to help with, as ever, do not hesitate to get in touch – my email is

DAN THE VICAR Book of Books

I

’m reading ‘The Tipping Point’ by Malcolm Gladwell. I love this book. It’s about how ideas gain momentum and can become cultural phenomenon. It is stuffed full of fascinating facts and odds and ends from our past with insights for our future. This kind of book makes my brain whirr and ping in all the right ways. It inspires and provokes, stimulates and challenges. It’s such a good read. It’s great to find a decent book to devour. On 7th March my boys will dress up as their favourite characters for World Book Day at school (Harry

Potter, Pirates or footballers are likely to figure). So we’re having the annual panic of deciding which characters to go as and how to get the correct costumes. I think grown ups should do this too although it could be problematic depending on where you work and who your favourite character is. Given my vocation it’s not entirely surprising that the Bible is my favourite book. This is a bit of a cheat because it’s a book of books of course. 66 books in all. 66 books of many different genres; historical, fictional, dramatic, mythical,

factual, poetic, even comic. It’s inspiring, confusing, beguiling, fascinating, obscure, troubling, beautiful, mysterious, provocative and so much more. I’ve been reading it since I was a boy and there is still so much I don’t understand and still so much I keep discovering. For World Book Day I’ll be shopping for another Malcolm Gladwell and in all likelihood digging into the Bible again. I won’t be dressing up as Jesus though. Sandals just aren’t my thing. I’m going to try and be like him instead. This seems like a good idea, from what I’ve read.

THE SAVINGS GURU Are Cash ISAs (Individual Savings Accounts)still worth it?

A

s we approach the end of the tax year, we increasingly get asked by savers whether it is still worth their while saving in a cash ISA. With interest rates typically much higher on ordinary savings accounts, and the introduction of the Personal Savings Allowance in 2016, many savers question whether there’s any point in saving in a Cash ISA anymore. The Personal Savings Allowance In 2016, the government introduced a Personal Savings Allowance which means that basic rate tax payers can earn £1,000 in savings interest before needing to pay tax and higher rate tax payers can earn £500 before paying tax. As a result, banks pay interest without any tax deduced now whereas previously you had to fill in a special form for this to be done or tax would automatically be deducted. This means a basic rate tax payer could have over £65,000 in the top paying instant savings account (1.51% from Family Building Society) and not pay any tax on the interest. Higher rate taxpayers will need £33,000 or more to tip over the allowance. What is the difference between Cash ISAs and ordinary savings accounts? A cash ISA is not dissimilar to an ordinary savings account, it’s just got a tax wrapper around it which means savers aren’t liable to pay tax on the interest they earn. Think of it like a two chocolate bars, one still in the wrapper and one out of it – they are the still the same chocolate bar! The main difference is the interest rates charged on the different accounts. In the early days of ISAs, there were some very competitive rates as providers fought for your cash ISA savings. In 2019, it is a very different situation with ordinary savings accounts often paying more than their cash ISA equivalents – sometimes considerably more. For example, the best one year fixed rate is 2.20% whereas the best one year ISA pays just 1.74%. Similarly, on a five-year fixed 2.70% can be found on a standard account whereas the best five year ISA is 2.15% by comparison. 14

So, are cash ISAs pointless now? For the vast majority of savers, there will be little or no immediate financial benefit to open a Cash ISA instead of a traditional savings account. However, there are exceptions and the following types of people should still consider them: 1) Existing Cash ISA savers Anyone who has opened an ISA every tax year since 1999, and used the full allowance, has been able to shelter over £141,500 plus interest from the tax man and, in April, will be able to add another £20,000 to that allowance. If you already have cash ISAs from previous tax years, it is worth considering retaining them to keep those tax free allowances. 2) Additional rate taxpayers Those taxpayers who earn over £150,000 a year pay 45% tax and get no personal savings allowance so should definitely consider cash ISAs. 3) First Time Buyers Lifetime ISAs, known as LISAs, are available for those aged 18 – 40 and you get a 25% bonus from the government each year on top of anything you save. First time buyers who save £4,000 get a £1,000 from the government. The bonus is paid every year until the saver is 50 years old. LISAs are aimed at first time buyers saving a deposit to purchase a home and for those looking to save for retirement. They have been somewhat controversial because there was already a scheme in place (Help to buy) for first time buyers and pensions provide generous tax relief for savers with many financial advisors still considering this a better form of retirement saving. There was little consultation from the government before LISAs and, as a result, there are only three providers of a cash LISA, Skipton, Nottingham and Newcastle Building Societies. Newcastle pay an attractive 1.10% interest on their LISA. However, those saving for a home will find the 25% bonus more attractive and should certainly consider a LISA if they are saving for a deposit.

MARCH 2019

B eau L ieu 4) Savers who may need access to their cash Savers looking at easy-access may want to consider a cash Isa because the differential in rates is very small – with Virgin Money’s cash easy access ISA paying 1.45% versus Family Building Societies 1.51% for ordinary easy access. Savers looking to build up a tax-free sum which they can keep for future years may consider this more important than a slightly higher rate. Savers considering fixed-rate bonds but want access to the cash during the term might prefer the flexibility that fixed rate ISAs have. Almost all cash ISA fixed rate bonds allow some form of access with a penalty interest charge. Other things to consider about cash ISAs are: • Savers can move their money from a cash ISA to a shares ISA. Until recently this wasn’t something you could do but some people will like the flexibility this allows and may want to hold savings in cash for a period before investing. • The Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) could change - there is no guarantee the PSA will be continue and the allowance could be cut or removed. Also, if interest rates rise, the value of the PSA will diminish too as smaller balances will then earn more interest and use the allowance up. What are the best rates currently? The savings market does move quickly, so we always recommend that you check our website for the latest rates. At time of print, our best personal savings rates are:

f you’re looking for a fun activity for the whole family, look no further than Wear A Hat Day. The annual fundraising event takes place on Friday 29th March and the Brain Tumour Research charity needs your help to make it the biggest, boldest and hattiest EVER! There are lots of ways you can take part whilst also helping an important cause. Put your thinking caps on and get involved – anything from a hatty fashion show and making Easter bonnets, to hosting a bake sale and going on a #Hattastic walkabout. Involve as many of your family, friends and work colleagues as possible - the bigger, the better and the more, the merrier – just don’t forget your hat! By taking part, you’ll be helping to raise vital funds for research into brain tumours. Wear A Hat Day was launched in 2010 so 2019 is its 10th year! Over the years, it has raised over £1 million − money that helps Brain Tumour Research fund its four UK Research Centres, raise awareness of this devastating disease and influence the Government and larger cancer charities to invest more nationally

16

in research for brain tumours. Brain tumours are indiscriminate and can affect anyone at any age. What’s more, they kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet historically just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Brain Tumour Research is determined to change this and has laid solid foundations on which to build progress towards finding a cure. But there is still a great deal of work to be done and funds are urgently needed to keep the research going. Please help make the 10th Wear A Hat Day the biggest and best EVER, and smash all previous records! Get your FREE fundraising pack today www.wearahatday.org TOGETHER we will find a cure.

A TRIBE CALLED SWEAT This simple habit can be a game-changer for you

I

’m going to assume (dangerous, I know) that you want to become the best version of yourself, most people do not want a mediocre life. I would argue that a regular fitness program is a key component of making that happen, but that is a different argument! But, asa fitness provider let me ask you this: “What do you suppose is the #1 factor that I’ve found - in over two decades as a fitness professional - for you to be successful with a fitness program?” The answer is hands-down... CONSISTENCY. Working out really hard or eating “perfectly” once per week or a handful of times per month just doesn’t cut it. You’re better off getting a little “right” each day than being spoton here and there. The same applies for ANYTHING you do do in life, if you want it to be successful. So, let me ask a second question, “What do you suppose is the #1 factor that I’ve found - in two decades as a fitness professional for you to be CONSISTENT with your workouts?” 9 times out of 10...SCHEDULING YOUR WORKOUTS AHEAD OF TIME. Again, the same is also true for anything you want to be successful at. I say, “9 times out of 10” because there are those rare folks who can just wing it and still get things done consistently - I’m NOT one of them! For most of us, life gets in the way too easily... We get caught up in projects, work late, just one more episode on Netflix...or just bail out because we don’t feel like it today. BUT, when we schedule things we tend to stick to them… It’s pretty rare that you just no-show your dentist or a meeting with your accountant, right? Of course, those are once in a while appointments that are typically booked way in advance and are hard to reschedule… I get that. That’s not the point. The point is, when you commit to something by

scheduling it, you’re more likely to follow through. I’ve also found this to be true with general productivity… For example, if I just show up to work each day without a plan to run my day...the day will quickly run me! That’s why I like to take a block off time (about 30 minutes) at the end of each week to review what I accomplished and plan out the following week or two… I literally plug everything I want/need to get done into my Google calendar. By the way, I teach this simple activity management technique to my business coaching clients and they tell me it’s a game-changer for their businesses! I’ve seen this same “system” work really well for fitness clients…who then apply this to every aspect of their lives. Each week they sit down with their schedules (juggling work and family activities) and determine when they will get things done. Now, let me address the rare few on the opposite end of the spectrum - those who’s schedules are so erratic that they change from day to day without much advance notice… Here’s how I would approach that: At the end of each day, take 5 - 10 minutes to plan out AND SCHEDULE (including your workouts) the next day. I actually do this even when I’m booking my calendar a week or two in advance. Things come up and I have to reschedule from time to time, plus I like to review my plan for the next day so I know what I’m walking into and what my goals for the day are. FACT: When I fall out of this practice, life becomes way more stressful, I get less done, (AND I miss workouts) Of course, once you schedule your activities you still have to STICK TO THEM...but, generally, people are pretty good about following a plan. It’s the lack of planning that messes them up.

I’d love to hear back from you… Tell me if you found this to be helpful or if you have a different system that works well for you I’m always game for learning ways to be more productive

ITS OK CAMPAIGN

W

Its ok not to be ok here do I start...

Bright, bubbly and outgoing on the surface; dark, quiet and extremely scared on the inside. From as early as I can remember, this was how I felt every day, facing school. To be honest, I was scared shitless. I’d quickly become terrified of school because of how much I didn’t understand or enjoy its force fed pass/ fail curriculum. I was confused and I couldn’t comprehend how multitudes of people chose to accept this as the only option. Unfortunately, over time, my inability to retain information and conform to the rulings of the Australian curriculum and education system sparked my mental health challenges. Every test, every report card, every assignment I would find myself receiving below average results. Over time, this created one of my biggest fears growing up and that was the fear of failure. My fears led to anxiety, anxiety to panic attacks and panic attacks to depression. Experiencing this through my teenage years and into my early adolescent life, at first I actually didn’t know what was going on. Born in the late 80’s and growing up in the 90’s & early 2000’s, finishing grade 12 in 2004, there was no awareness and people didn’t really speak about their emotions or openly discuss what they were going through. To me, the “anxious feelings” simply felt as if they were a part of growing up and becoming a teenager.

Unfortunately, post school, things decided to take a turn for the worse. Never feeling like I was good enough within society, I’d started becoming extremely hard on myself. I always felt I should have been better positioned in life than I was. Regardless of how hard I worked and how much I pushed myself to achieve, through my eyes nothing was ever good enough. This was when the depression started to kick in. Going from one dead end job to the next, I was watching myself go into a downward spiral and at the time I didn’t have any motivation to stop myself. There were so many days where I simply couldn’t face the outside world because I didn’t believe I was good enough to do so. Most days I managed to put my socially accepted mask of comfort on, pretending to be the person society wanted me to be. Other days were filled with complete darkness. I’d find myself questioning life, looking around wondering what it would be like if I hadn’t entered in the first place.

...FEELINGS GREW STRONGER...

As each year of high school passed, the feelings grew stronger and stronger. I would wake all hours of the night, scared, cold sweats and never wanting the next day to happen. With each new day, I would wake with a tight stomach and cold sweats, instantly thinking of how much I feared the possibility of facing another test or handing in another assignment that would result in a fail. 20

MARCH 2019

B eau L ieu

Continued... I had well over a decade of mixed, unspoken emotions bottled inside. Having an extremely supportive family and friends I could have spoken with any one of them about what I was going through. Due to my nature of being extremely stubborn I chose not to speak up. Instead, I started working out how to fix and understand my situation alone. In 2016, I started writing down everything I had gone through and how it affected me. I soon became hooked on the writing, it was interesting and therapeutic. Two years later, I ended up with enough content to create a book; my personal story, released ONLY with the intention to help others, show people that they are not alone, spread

awareness and give reassurance that regardless of what you have been through, there is ALWAYS a way to change, improve and better your situation. I failed every aspect of school, struggle with spelling, punctuation and grammar. However, my determination to help others created the fuel I needed to prove myself wrong and fight my demons by writing a book. To this day, I still pinch myself in disbelief. If I was to do it all over, the ONLY thing I would change would be to SPEAK UP and talk about what I was going through.

COMPUTER RUNNING SLOW? If your computer is running slow you don’t necessarily have to replace it. Many people throw away perfectly good computers that just need a little work and perhaps a few upgrade parts. Older computers can often be greatly improved for a fraction of the cost of a new computer. Your computer may have a software or hardware problem slowing it down and this can be investigated. Hard drive faults are a very common cause of slow running computers and this is fairly easy to diagnose. Hard drives (even if not faulty) can be a performance restriction in

a computer. The best computer upgrade these days is to upgrade the old style mechanical hard drive to a SSD (Solid State Drive). These have no moving parts and are a similar technology to USB Flash drives. SSDs make a huge difference in performance, even on computers that are several years old. If you would like further help or advice with this, please call DH Computing on the number below. DH Computing specialises in computer support for homes and small businesses.

THE CRISIS COACH

I

Comfy pants...

t’s one of those things that creep up on me without realising. The days and weeks seem to fly by so fast. On balance I’d say that I’m doing ok at juggling life’s demands and finding some time to do what I promised and self-develop through reading, learning and putting some of that learning into coaching practice. I’ve thought quite a lot about which NLP journey I’m going to write about next… and then it dawns on me… here I am dressed and ready to attack the day but I’m wearing my comfy pants! I apologise for the analogy if you are diving too deep into imagining what that picture looks like! But the point is, isn’t it all too easy to choose the slightly discoloured, slightly too roomy pants that wouldn’t go with any outfit but who cares; they’re comfy! This is what people do: we opt for the comfortable route, the one we’ve always taken, the tried and tested decision making, risk free from uncomfortable situations… For those of you who would like to stop thinking about my pants, it’s the same as that weird ‘auto pilot’ that drivers suffer, when we get to our routine destination where we have been a hundred times before, but when we arrive, there is zero recollection of driving here! What did I do? How did I drive here? Well in most cases what you did is use your well-established neural pathways. You know how to drive so well that it is embedded in your subconscious, and you know very well the route you are taking and where the traffic lights and slow zones are etc.

26

This part of our brain function is where habit forms and exists to help us functioning. If we had to consciously walk as if it was our first step, speak like it was our first word, and drive like it was our first lesson, and so on to get through just one day would be too exhausting! We have a set of neural pathways that help us store subconsciously we know so that we can function without thinking about it. The down side to this amazing brain function is that by design we naturally choose the easiest and most used option, the same option we chose last time and the time before and the time before that! While this habitual ‘auto pilot’ decision making is very efficient it is also very lazy! What if while going about your day in comfy pants and auto pilot switched on you missed how fabulously peaceful and sunny that day was, and that while being aware of the sunny day, you might have noticed that sign – the friend you haven’t seen in ages, the charity shop that reminds you that you wanted to volunteer and give back, or the new building housing a brand new employment opportunity!? If we want to take control of our lives, we must first be aware of our auto pilot function, and sometimes choose to switch it off and be aware of our experiences, enjoy it and take something new from it. What are you doing out of habit that when you think about it isn’t helping you? Look for new opportunities within your surroundings that currently passes you by. What if you stepped out of your comfy pants and tried something new?
