Dan Lynch insisted Stonehaven be kept after residents there submitted a petition in 2016.

get along fine walking on the road. Others can expect the same. "We can include this road or that, yes, but it's the same as all parts of town," Stack said. "If we do one location we must do them all. And that's simply not practical." In the recorded vote (an unusual process reserved for controversial issues), Stack was joined by Lynch, McGee, and Coun. Ted Strike in supporting the report. The latter praised operations manager John Steckly for keeping the budget low in a quickly
growing community. Strike held the same job for many years, saying the budget in 1999 was $750,000. And there hasn't been any accidents or injuries. With the number of sidewalks reduced, staff will have them completed in one night (formerly two) with only rare exceptions.
STORY BEHIND THE STORY Arnprior council in 2016 voted to add more sidewalks to the snow removal list after a petition was submitted from residents along Stonehaven Way. It was too dangerous for students near one school to be walking on the road, they agreed. But since then the cost has ballooned, forcing them to nix almost every street that was added.

SIU INVESTIGATES FATAL COLLISION NEAR ARNPRIOR The six-vehicle collision east of Arnprior that claimed two lives early Sunday afternoon is now in the hands of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU is an independent civilian oversight agency that investigates situations that include death or injury where police were involved. According to OPP, members of both Ottawa Police Service and OPP were in pursuit of an eastbound vehicle on Hwy. 417 as part of an investigation just before 1 p.m. July 7. After calling off the pursuit "due to safety concerns," the vehicle was then found to be trav-
eling east in the westbound lanes where it was involved in multiple collisions near the Panmure Road exit. The 36-year-old man who had been the police "subject of interest" after an alleged sexual assault, was killed, as was a 62year-old woman, whose vehicle was struck by the fleeing car. A 27-year-old driver and his 28-year-old male passenger were also rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and a total of nine patients were treated by paramedics. "One police officer from the Ottawa Police Service has been designated as a

The boy was transported to hospital in Arnprior before rushed to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. According to OPP Const. Brian Schutt the boy suffered "serious injuries." OPP Const. Tina Hunt said later the boy is either 13 or 14, and that the legal age to ride ATV's on trails varies. Mayor Walter Stack said he's travelled that stretch of trail many times with his grandchildren on a side-
by-side. He said it could be possible that the setting sun may have impeded visibility, causing the single vehicle accident. However, OPP said dust kicked up was a factor. "It's terribly unfortunate for the young lad and his family," Stack said. "It seems like an unfortunate accident. That gate is a standard one used on trails across Ontario and was researched before installing. I'm sure the county and OPP are investigating and will make any changes if needed." He hasn't heard where the family lives. A few weeks ago Stack raised the issue of speeding and other violations along the Algonquin Trail in the downtown area.

A youth is in serious condition at CHEO following an ATV accident on the Algonquin Trail, on the east side of the Madawaska River in Arnprior. On Sunday, July 7, at about 7:45 p.m. Arnprior Fire Service along with police and paramedics arrived on scene, across the trail bridge where the ATV had struck a gate post in the centre of the trail. "Fire department personnel cut the lock on the gate to gain access for EMS (emergency medical services)," Deputy Fire Chief Rick Desarmia said. "The driver of the ATV was trav-

Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital The Grove Nursing Home Primary Health Care Centre Community Services Strong patient and family partnerships readies ARH for new Ontario Health Teams Laura Young grew up in Arnprior and she regularly visited Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) for routine medical appointments. In more recent years, she became the family member of three loved ones who came to ARH for emergency care, complex health issues, terminal illness, or an inpatient stay. “You see the hospital through a different lens when your loved one is a patient,” said Laura, a Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) member. “I hope by being involved with PFAC I can help make the Hospital an even more positive experience for patients and families.” ARH has evolved beyond the approach of engaging patients, families, residents and clients by only coming to them for input regarding new policies, programs or initiatives. “We have true engagement, which means we have patients, families, residents and clients at each of the decision-making tables to provide information, ideas, insights – they’re part of the team,” said Eric Hanna, President and CEO, ARH. “I’ve seen the difference this level of engagement makes. If we don’t have patients, families, residents or clients at the table, we may focus on a problem that patients, for example, don’t believe is a problem. This approach will become even more important as we form a high-performing Ontario Health Team (OHT).” Improving the patient and family experience The PFAC, The Grove’s Family Council and the Grove’s Resident Council formally help facilitate engagement. ARH also populates working committees with patients and family members – previously, these were typically attended by staff only.

It is involved in the decision-making process for the assessment, implementation and evaluation phases of new initiatives, policies and projects. “There is great value in involving families in decision-making,” said Marilyn Colton, Chair of the Family Council and whose brother-in-law is a Grove resident. “At our recent meeting, we discussed and supported the idea of introducing a new closure service on a death of a resident that will help promote grieving among other residents, families and staff.” The Family Council has also been integral to the discussions and assessment of the new resident-directed care model and will be engaged through the design consultations for the new Grove. Engagement sets the right stage for Ontario Health Teams True patient and family engagement are vital to the success of the new OHTs. Julie Drury, Chair, Minister’s Patient and Family Advisory Council, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care said: “Patients, families and caregivers have a unique knowledge about the healthcare system based on their lived experience. Their understanding of healthcare system challenges, barriers, opportunities and solutions is essential to ensuring an efficient and effective approach to healthcare transformation and the functioning of Ontario Health Teams.” Hanna adds: “The ARH approach and commitment to patient, family, resident and client engagement is an asset we will leverage as we develop an OHT that will lead the healthcare transformation across the province.” ARH is recruiting volunteers to join the Patient and Family Advisory Committee. “The Hospital team listened to our ideas and vision to create something more positive, functional and focus the content on the patients who are in the hospital and will be discharged home,” said Laura, who along with PFAC members Maggie Kerkhoff and Andrew Nellesyn provided a rough framework of what to include in the new handbook that launches in 2020. “When it was time for my father to go home from the hospital, I didn’t know anything about how to access available resources – as a family member it was confusing and challenging to help my dad with deciding what supports would make the most sense for him,” said Laura. “This experience motivated me to get involved in the handbook and influenced what the content needed to be.” Helping create a better home for residents The Grove’s Family Council is open to all residents’ family members and

"Fortunately the safety tarps that were installed within the store below partially broke his fall," centre manager Belinda Hanson said via email, adding the roofer was released from hospital Sunday. The incident raises some concern as to the safety of employees and customers. The shopping centre has seen many buckets placed to catch rain dripping through the roof for several years now. But when Metro was asked if there is a danger of chunks falling to the floor, manager Barry Carter said, "I have no comment. Head office said to make no comment." The scene caused a stir in part because a helicopter ambulance landed nearby at Veale Family Dental Centre. Real estate agent Ruth Goodfellow witnessed the scene outside. "It was all very well organized and emergency people moved very efficiently," Goodfellow said. "There were a lot of curious people around. We are lucky to have

MUNICIPALITY SETTLES ON NEW CAO DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com It took longer than expected, but Bryan Martin is the new chief administrative officer (CAO) at the Town of Arnprior. A press release issued late Friday afternoon details Martin's 29 years in management, finances, human resources and projects in the municipal and private sectors. He leaves the CAO position at the Township of Bonnechere Valley after 17 years. Before that, Martin was senior administrative officer at the municipality of Hall Beach. He is an active member of a number of professional associations including the Association of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario, the Renfrew County Clerks and Treasurers, the Municipal Finance Officers Association of Ontario and the Ontario Municipal Management Institute. "He is a strategic leader that brings an extensive background in team management, diverse project management, collective agreements, and program efficiency and effectiveness," Mayor Walter Stack is quoted in the release. "We are excited to have Bryan join the Arnprior team and to have an Arnprior resident leading the administrative team at the town. Bryan will be starting with the town on Aug. 12." Council wrestled with picking a process to replace Michael Wildman, who signalled his departure more than a year ago and vacated several months ago. (It is not unusual for a CAO to leave when a new mayor is elected.) Stack denied Wildman a seat on the committee overseeing his replacement. And after all was settled, the finalists selected, it was decided that none proved ideal. The process started over and has concluded with Martin's hiring.

Apart from the judge and the lawyers and bailiffs, no one really wants to be in a courtroom. Sometimes even the jury. Whether it's a civil or a criminal matter though, the arrival of a reporter in a courtroom can make already tense lawyers tense up even more. I know. I've seen it myself. By being in a courtroom, you're not catching people at their best. In fact, they're likely being judged for their worst decision ever. I've covered a case where a financial planner stole money from an elderly lady with dementia. Where a mental health nurse had sexual relations with one of his patients. Where a former nurse was charged (later found not guilty) with abusing young boys in their youth. And, worst of all, a case where a teaching assistant at a local elementary school pleaded guilty to possessing and viewing child pornography. That last one gave me nightmares for months and I needed to talk to a therapist afterwards. So why do we do it? Why do we cover these trials? Everyone has a right to a fair trial. The public also has a right to know. We are governed by Toronto Star guidelines that state that we "believe in freedom of expression and the public's right to know what
is happening in the courts." Heading into court, we have to hold section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982) about the "freedom of the press," as being equal to section 11 (d), which covers the right "to a fair and public hearing." Notice that word, public. We are not out to get anyone. We take what we do seriously. If there is a publication ban, we adhere to it (even if our lawyers are challenging it.) If charges are dropped, or added, we report on it. If we name someone upon their arrest, we have to commit to follow through until charges are dropped, or the person is convicted, or found not guilty. (As one journalism teacher told me: "No one is ever found innocent.") We do not publish the names of alleged sexual assaults, or of children in legal proceedings. In civil cases, we try to get both sides, and we are not on anyone's side, rooting for the police, or the defendant. And so while few people like to be in court, not everyone can be in court - but we can, and we are there in your stead. It's about trust. Our relationship with our readers is built on transparency, honesty and integrity. As such, we have launched a trust initiative to tell you who we are and how and why we do what we do. LETTERS & COMMENTARY IN DEFENCE OF CLOVER To the editor: I slowly sip my hot coffee and watch out the front window as a bumblebee buzzes from flower to flower, searching for pollen and nectar to bring back to her nest. Seeing this integral part of nature taking place right on our front lawn helps me to clear my mind and begin the day. As a young family who has recently moved to Arnprior, swayed to this town by its stunning natural beauty, we hoped to make our front yard symbiotic with the ecosystem that surrounds us. A yard entirely disregarded is one thing, but an uncut lawn is another. Rather than use gasoline and time to maintain a front lawn, in front of our home we have chosen to grow multiple native wildflowers, as well as to let the small patch of "lawn" grow somewhat longer. Northern bush honeysuckle, red columbine, hoary vervain, coneflower, and bergamot all adorn our front yard -
each carefully chosen and purchased from a native plant supplier in the province. These native plants evolved within the surrounding natural environment, meaning that not only do they provide wild pollinator species with an appropriate source of nectar and pollen, they also do not require a significant level of maintenance from us, including watering. There is also no risk of any of these plants escaping and causing a detriment to the surrounding environment. Our patch of uncut lawn is mostly made up of wildflowers, including dandelions, clovers, mints, and anemones. Not only do these plants support wild pollinators, but they are also beautiful, and they produce oxygen for us to breath. We do not need to cut them down weekly. According to Statistics Canada, the use of a gas-powered lawn mower for one hour can emit the same amount of pollution as a car driven 20 to 200 miles. In one year, this can add up to the equivalent PM2.5
(particulate matter) of driving a car nearly 3300 kilometres. PM2.5 is one component of smog and is detrimental to human and environmental health. The freshly mown, military-style front lawn is slowly becoming a thing of the past, and for good reason. Rather than viewing a fresh cut lawn as "wellmaintained" or "orderly" many young people see a front lawn as an unnecessary use of available land. We have been raised with the alarm bells of environmental catastrophe ringing in our ears for decades. We know the consequences for ourselves, our children, and grandchildren if we continue to be irresponsible with the land we live on. Watching out the front window I see the bumblebee breeze from coneflower to clover, and I take pride in knowing that she has been able to find some of the nectar and pollen she needs to survive in our front yard.

Beloved wife of the late James “Jim” Taylor (1993). Dear mother of Linda Turcotte (Raymond) of Arnprior and Tom Taylor (Wanda Tomiyama) of Calgary, AB. Lovingly remembered by her 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren as well as her nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brother Bill Dean (Helen). Daughter of the late Ernest and Lila (Carss) Dean. Audrey was one of the last living members of the Mons Rebekah Lodge, No. 203 Arnprior. She will be remembered for her generous offerings of her time and many talents. PIERUNEK, Dominic Joseph It is with great sadness that we announce Dominic’s passing at Renfrew Victoria Hospital on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at the age of 57. Loving husband of Margaret Pierunek, they shared 32 years of marriage together. Born in Renfrew, Ontario, he was the son of Alexander and Theresa Pierunek. He attended Renfrew Collegiate Institute for high school. He was no longer working but was a proud employee of Home Hardware for 22 years. Dominic spent the majority of his time with his close family or listening to his favorite songs from his generation. He had a mad love for both music and Johnny Cash. He will be always remembered for his musical background. Dominic is survived by his wife Margaret, his mother Theresa, his daughters Genine Pierunek (Jordan), Amanda Villneff (James), his grandchildren Rylie Pierunek, Abel Sharpe, Harley and Ivy Bauer, his siblings Esther (Bernie) Peplinski, Bobby (Mary), Kevin, Jo-anne (Darwin) Greggain, Monica Lafont (Perry), Mary (Jack), Anne (Garvin). Dominic was predeceased by his daughter Linda, father Alexander, sister Frances and his brother Raymond. In keeping with his family’s wishes, the funeral services will be private. Passed peacefully away, Filomena (nee Di Iorio) Pirro, on July 3, 2019; at the age of 75 years. Born and raised in Ielsi, Campobasso, Italy. Immigrated to Canada in 1961 at the age of 19 years. Filomena was the daughter of a tailor and a homemaker. She was the youngest of six children. When she immigrated to Canada she worked as a seamstress in Montreal, QC for many years. She then moved to Victoria BC with her family where she, later worked in the cafeteria at the University of Victoria until her retirement. She then moved to Pitt Meadows, BC to live closer to her son and his family, until recently, when she moved with them to Almonte, Mississippi Mills, ON. Leaving to celebrate her life with loving memories, are her son Salvatore (Natalie Thornhill) Pirro, grandson Gavin (Kyla) Thornhill, brother Ernesto (Angelina) Di Iorio, sister Maria Ciocca, sister-in-law Enza Di Iorio, many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Raffele and Concetta Di Iorio; brothers Carlo Di Iorio, Vincenzo Di Iorio, and Antionio Di Iorio, and brother-in law Francesco Ciocca. A funeral mass was held at Holy Name of Mary Parish (134 Bridge St., Almonte) on Saturday, July 6, at 11:00 a.m., with Father Paul J. Gaudet officiating. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery. To honour Filomena’s life, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

BARRIE, George Arthur July 27, 1928 - June 16, 2019 With sadness, the family of George Arthur Barrie announces that he passed away peacefully on Father’s Day, June 16, 2019 at the age of 90, but joyful with the knowledge that he is once again reunited with his true love, Aileen Violet Barrie nee Logan (2016). George leaves behind his children; Jan Lee (Terry), Steve Barrie (Wendy), Wendy Graham (Bruce), and Jeff Barrie (Colleen), as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Jodi Hendricks (Frank), McKenna and Finley, Ashley Stufko (Luke) and Lincoln, Lee Barrie (Emma) and Annie, Barrie Graham (Kathleen), Lauren and Gavin, Kurtis Graham (Bailey), and “great-bampa” to Remington George, Alyssa Barrie (Matt), and “G-Paw” to Julia Barrie. Survived by his one remaining sibling, Beth Haward (Ritchie), sisters-in-law Isabel Fulton (late Ray), and Annabelle Smith (late Lorne Logan). He will be missed by nieces Linda Miller and Lorna Pleau as well as family and his Villa friends. George was predeceased by son Glen (1957) and grand-daughter Kaitlin Graham (1986). Predeceased by brother Lester (late Beatrice), sisters Lee Heintzman (late Gordon), Joyce Talbot (late Dick), Ethel Young (Earl), and parents Arthur and Elsie (Laughlin). Special thanks to his Garden Terrace family; Jane Burt, Brenda Asselstine, Fay Papadakos, and Pauline Cherry. Dad was a longtime farmer, drainage contractor and TransCanada Pipelines drainage consultant. He created an island on the Madawaska River and was a hydro dam builder. Very worshipful, brother George Barrie was a longtime stalwart member of Madawaska Lodge # 196 in Arnprior, and Past Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of A.F.& A.M. of Canada in the Province of Ontario. Arrangements by the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior. Visitations were held Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and after, 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Funeral service was celebrated Friday, June 21, 2019 in the Boyce Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Interment White Lake Community Cemetery. A reception followed the service in the Boyce Reception Centre. Masonic service took place Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In memory of George, donations gratefully accepted to the Grove Redevelopment Fund (keep our loved ones close to home). MAYHEW, Irene (Deslaurier) R.N. Passed gently into the night July 8, 2019, in her 86th year, after a lengthy illness, with her typical grace and dignity. Irene was widowed when her beloved Harry passed away in 2007. She is survived by one brother, Earl Deslaurier, New Brunswick, and was predeceased by her parents Mary and John Deslaurier, her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Bill Miller, and brother and sisterin-law Duncan and Gloria Deslaurier, and a daughter-in-law, Christina. Left to mourn their mom are her children and their spouses Bruce and Mary Mayhew, Renfrew; Diana and Peter Renaud, Ottawa; Brent and Angela Mayhew, Orillia; and Barry and Jacqueline Mayhew; Johnstown. Irene is also survived by her nine grandchildren and their spouses; Zach and Paige Mayhew; Louise Mayhew and Kevin Couto, Lindsay, Michael and Derek Renaud, Peter and Robert Mayhew (mother Christina Mayhew), and Jared (Libby) and Justine Mayhew. Also left to mourn is her step-granddaughter Cheryl Rekker (mother Angela Mayhew). Her four great-grandchildren were blessed to have had their “Pretty Grandma” to shower them with her love. Malakai and Sloane Mayhew (Zach and Paige); Alexander (Lindsay Renaud); Aria Grace (Louise and Kevin). Also left to miss their step-great-grandmother are Angela and Brent’s grandchildren Tobias and Elliot Rekker. The family would like to express their unending gratitude to Dr. Pinard for his care of our Mom, CCAC for their ongoing assistance, and last, but not least the staff of Groves Park Lodge, who cared for Mom like she was family. Dentistry@Arnprior held their third annual Dentistry From the Heart event on June 22, hosted by Dr. Neeraj Bansal. The event offered free
exams, X-rays, fillings and extractions to adults 18 and over in the community. This year, they were able to help 43 people, providing $23,300 worth of dentistry for free. Dentistry From the Heart started in 2001 and has grown to include over 200 annual events around the world.
As I age my appreciation for a good bowl of soup grows. More specifically the broth. I've enjoyed everything from French onion in childhood to Galilee Centre chicken noodle last spring. It doesn't much matter what's inside. I have come to realize it is the liquid itself. When in my late 80s you will find me leaning over a TV stand sipping hot water from a bowl and whispering 'ambrosia.' So it should come as no surprise that when I walked into Antrim Truck Stop and saw the lunch special I hardly glanced at the 100-item menu. Onion soup with the submarine sandwich, please, and but-
ter tart for dessert. "Could you bring the butter tart at the same time as the meal? I want us to spend as much time together as possible." Of course the broth at Antrim was every bit as deep and rich and perfectly seasoned as you'd expect. Straight from grandma's stove where it's been simmering for years. I once heard of a street vendor in some Vietnamese city who adds to her broth before it empties: a tiny portion of each serving includes original liquid from 30 years ago. That's the feeling I get from every bowl at Antrim (minus the fish sauce.) One complaint: I could have done without the cheese on top. It was a wasted blob floating in the bowl. No sense imitating

French onion if the cheese can't be browned under the broiler. The sandwich was excellent, especially the generously thick slice of turkey. It made me almost regret not ordering their famous Christmas Dinner on a Bun. And it's always a good idea to present it open-faced. I took advantage of the tableside Tabasco.
All the while, the butter tart and I grew closer and closer. We had so much in common that it was difficult to tell us apart. Then in two bites we became one.
