Jennifer Swaine Chair – Sunshine Coast Business Awards

Starting and operating your own business is no small feat. Whether it’s big business or small, to successfully enter a new market and build a client base is a lot of hard work. The work never ends too, once it’s up and going, owners are constantly on the run not only making customers happy while maintaining a workforce but looking for new opportunities to expand.

Rumba ReSoRt

All this effort usually goes unrecognised. Some owners are too humble, shy or just happy to plug along on their own accord. But, I believe it’s important to throw your hat in the ring and put yourself out there to gain some form of acknowledgement.

NOOSA’S BOUTIQUE STYLE OF EDUCATION TRULY UNIQUE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST CQUniversity Noosa’s quality, flexible and boutique style of education is providing something truly unique on the Sunshine Coast, according to Associate Vice Chancellor (Sunshine Coast Region) Teressa Schmidt. The campus at 90 Goodchap Street offers on-campus programs across Digital Media, Education, Nursing, and Creative and Professional Practice, as well as support for locally-based distance students across a wide range of other degrees. Ms Schmidt said it’s interesting that, outside Nursing, STEPS preparatory courses and Education, the next largest cohorts of Noosa students are studying Law and Psychology. “We have had the recent addition of VET programs to our scope, such as the Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care) and the Diploma of Nursing, providing comprehensive and flexible pathways for nursing students from certificate right through to postgraduate continuing education, including Midwifery and Mental Health Nursing,” Ms Schmidt said.

Ms Duguid said Sunshine Coast residents should be proud that CQUniversity has been chosen by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings as one of the top 2 percent of universities worldwide, and as one of the World’s Top 100 Young Universities (under 50 years old). “Our Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) results, managed by the Australian Research Council, show CQUniversity has world-class research in 14 different categories and the Uni has earned $60 million in competitive research income since 2009,” Ms Duguid said. “The University is delivering over 300 education and training offerings, from short courses and certificates, through to undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees. “The Federal Government’s own quality indicators show that CQUniversity’s graduate employment rate is 80.6 percent compared with the national average of 69.5 percent. Our median salary is $60,000 compared with the national average of $56,000.” Noosa Shire Council has nominated CQUniversity Noosa for the 2017 Sunshine Coast Business Awards to be announced on November 18. your plans and be making all changes before construction begins. Cruize Parker and Jonno Ament are directors of DST and Archolo respectively, both having been students of architecture in Brisbane. Cruize decided to go into the commercial services industry doing mechanical, electrical, fire, hydraulic and gas drafting for projects around the country and abroad. Years later, after Cruize founded DST, the duo started working together to bring about a change to the building industry with the use of virtual reality. Both Jonno and Cruize have been active in Queensland's video game developing community, where they have formed the Brisbane Unreal Engine Meetup which is officially sponsored by Epic Games of North Carolina. While DST and Archolo use cutting edge gaming technology to deliver solutions for the

commercial and architectural industries, the software is heavily based in the video game developing industry. The meetup aims to assist any person interested in developing apps or games with Unreal Engine. Currently the partnership is modelling a variety of residential homes and commercial projects across Queensland and New South Wales, and further developing their services to cater for other industries wishing to utilise gaming technology to bring products to life. For the ultimate visualisation experience, see how DST can help you. From the client to site, DST and its partners are creating less waste, minimising time delays and ensuring clients are confident knowing they will get what they ask for well before work even starts on site.

Bromilow Home Support Services Bromilow Home Support Services is a leading community care provider of services for aged and disabled people on the Sunshine Coast. From humble beginnings working from a home office in Buderim, Bromilow now employs 100 staff including care workers, registered nurses, cleaners, gardeners, dementia champions and administration staff. The organisation delivers a broad range of in-home support options for the elderly and younger people with disabilities, assisting them to maintain their independence and remain living in their own homes.

Over the past 25 years, Bromilow has developed a reputation as a provider of choice. Their excellent reputation is based on quality services and an open and transparent relationship with clients that offers personalised attention and good old fashioned customer service.

customer service has enabled Bromilow to successfully enter its 25th year as a community care provider, proudly assisting the Sunshine Coast community.

“It has been a privilege to assist the older and younger disabled population on the Sunshine Coast for the past quarter century,” Paul said. “Bromilow has enjoyed a wonderful journey – but there is still much more to come.”

“The most enjoyable aspect of my role is visiting clients in their homes. Sitting one-onone and just talking with them; listening to their stories, hearing about their fascinating lives, playing with their pets, and sharing a cuppa,” Paul said.

“We raised a few eyebrows back in the day as a new kid on the block,” Paul recalls.

“One of my most memorable clients was Eric, an elderly bushman who had lived in Tewantin for many years. Eric lived in an old timber home, surrounded by his many beloved cats and a python in the ceiling.”

“We didn’t come from a nursing or clinical background. However, we came to the industry with one major asset that has continued to serve us very well – a clear client focus.”

With government initiated aged care reforms, the industry is becoming more market driven and highly competitive. Consumers now have more choice than ever and we can support our clients in new and innovative ways.

CEO Paul Hawting has been with the organisation every step of the way.

sunshine coast radiology Breast Diagnostic Specialists is the prodigy of Sunshine Coast Radiology, which is in its 10th year of providing high quality breast care in the region. Breast Diagnostic Specialists is a new breast specialist centre on the Sunshine Coast, committed to providing trusted breast care for women in a welcoming environment. The dedicated team of healthcare professionals strive to provide the highest quality breast imaging and diagnostic services, in recognition that early detection is the key to saving lives. So, why choose Breast Diagnostic Specialists to look after your breast health? Firstly, Breast Diagnostic Specialists provide a tailored and holistic approach to breast health care. Secondly, they also provide double readings of mammography, independently by two of their specialists to improve sensitivity and accuracy. Thirdly, they offer consultation on the day with an on-site specialist giving you peace of mind. 3D Mammography (Breast Tomosynthesis) is

an innovative and effective technology used by Breast Diagnostic Specialists. During a mammogram, the Tomosynthesis machine sweeps in a small arc above the breast. This produces images in layers as thin as one millimetre. Breast Diagnostic Specialists can now view your breast images one layer at a time, like turning the pages of a book. Breast Diagnostic Specialists also offer comprehensive services including breast screening and diagnostic mammography, biopsy and breast MRI. 3D mammography (Tomosynthesis) exams on the Selenia® Dimensions® 3D system by Hologic are also offered. Procedures including core biopsies, hookwire localisations, cyst aspirations, fine needle aspirations and stereotactic biopsies are provided by Breast Diagnostic Specialists. Breast Diagnostics Specialists are dedicated to providing trusted breast care. They recommend having regular screening mammograms, as early detection is the best defence against breast cancer. Screening mammograms are used when you have

no symptoms as a proactive approach to breast health and are available locally in their practices on the Sunshine Coast.

AgE gUIDE FOR YOUR BREAST SCREENINg 50-74 If you are aged 50 to 74 years you are encouraged to have a screening mammogram every two years. Breast Diagnostic Specialists utilise Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography) for screening mammograms. By providing 3D Mammography, Breast Diagnostic Specialists offers women on the Sunshine Coast access to an innovative and effective breast imaging technology. They also use 3D Mammography for Diagnostic Mammograms (where there are symptoms).

under 40 Screening mammograms are often less reliable for women under 40 years of age as the density of breast tissue in younger women makes it more difficult to detect cancers on mammograms. However, you are encouraged to know your breasts. As part of your daily routine, establish what is your ‘normal’ when it comes to look and feel. Please seek health advice if you notice any changes.

40 to 49 Talk to your GP to establish if a mammogram is right for you. Continue to know your breasts and determine what is your ‘normal’. Don’t hesitate to seek health advice if you notice any changes.

I am fascinated by how it works, so I thought I would ask the Coast’s number one specialist in this area, Dr Brenda Jamnik, or as her clients fondly call her, Dr B. Across her 24 years in working in the field, Dr B said there are two major stumbling blocks stifling the successful achievement of a highperformance business. Firstly, the leaders and managers know what their problems are and seek to implement what they believe are the solutions. Investing in these solutions they realise that they did not get the outcomes they thought they would and then wonder why. Secondly, the recruitment processes although robust are often aligned with a need to fill a position urgently, or promote a person because they are liked and often a good worker. Both of these approaches are flawed.

“The people in the business know what is not being achieved, however they often look at the immediate reason of what they think the problem is, and focus on what is the immediate visible contributor without understanding the full root cause, which is like putting on a band aid.” Dr B said. The solution she tells me is, “To invest in a competent person who can assess the root cause through a systematic approach to align the people and systems with the product. Then put the right person in the right role at the right time.” It is the only way to have a solid foundation on which to build a high-performance organisation.”

From those tender moments with your newborn to fun and laughter as your children grow and all of life’s celebrations in between, Jessica Vince Photography captures the moments of today that will melt your heart tomorrow. Based on the Sunshine Coast, Jessica Vince Photography specialises in maternity, newborn and family photos. Jessica always wanted to be a photographer but kept putting it off as it is a very challenging industry to break into. However, a hobby and pure passion for photography soon developed into a thriving business.

process and everything that goes into taking that one amazing picture. This includes the people that I get to meet, all the cuddles with every new baby and then the look on peoples faces when they see what you have created. “It is this creative side of editing the photos and the overall vision of what I see through the lens of a camera that I love the most. “I am very artistic and visual in all that I do that is what drives me.”

The idea of Jessica Vince Photography started when Jessica commenced her Diploma in Photography whilst pregnant with her first child Blake.

Dr B left me with something to ponder on; “Achieving a high-performance business is an opportunity; ensure it is an opportunity investment not an opportunity cost as all of the best journeys are achieved crossing a challenging and rocky path and this takes planning, understanding and importantly investment in both time and money.”

She soon fell pregnant again, with the arrival of her daughter Ellie 11 months later. “I practiced taking photos of my children and family and my business started out as a hobby,” Jessica said. “After a while, I fell in love with the whole

aussie batteries and solar Local camping & battery store has a sunny outlook this summer Local Businessman Nathan Gathercole knows how to camp in style Will you be camping this summer? If so, you need a reliable and efficient solar setup that will work remotely by harnessing the power of the sun. The best way to guarantee this is to talk to the experts at Aussie Batteries and Solar based in Warana. Using solar power while camping and touring off-road can seem like a mystery, but creating a reliable power system that fits your needs is easier than you may think. Nathan Gathercole owner of Aussie Batteries and Solar said, “A self-sufficient solar setup requires camping solar panels for compactness and portability, a solar regulator, a deep-cycle auxiliary battery and an inverter if you’re planning to charge any 240v appliances such as your laptop or television.” Nathan said solar power is a clean form of

energy that’s natural, renewable and best of all free. The benefits of using an adequate portable solar system are undeniable, as they allow you to travel to unpowered and remote locations without sacrificing items like fridges, LED camping lights, mobile devices and more. Meanwhile, camping in these places will mean you can avoid paying heftier fees for powered sites and truly enjoy the beauty of some of the most remote parts of Australia. Nathan is a Sunshine Coast local with a passion for solar. He grew up in Bokarina enjoying regular fishing and camping trips with his family and friends, and it was this appetite for the great outdoors that sparked his passion for creating a ‘one-stop camping power shop.’

reputation because of a constant pursuit of excellence in the field of renewable energy. Backed by a team of experts and customer testimonials that speak of the quality of both products and service, Aussie Batteries and Solar has grown to become a market leader in Australia and this has seen them nominated as a finalist for the 2017 Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Nathan said he is proud of his team and how Aussie Batteries and Solar have been selected and recognised in the distinguished

group of nominated businesses for this year’s business awards. Aussie Batteries have demonstrated an ability to manage and sustain large retail growth whilst staying true to the core goal of providing customers with ‘expert knowledge and great products’. Nathan also explained in celebration of the company’s nomination, they are running some great sales on their website www.aussiebatteries.com.au meaning Sunshine Coast Daily readers can indeed look forward to a sunny outlook for their summer camping adventures.

From humble beginnings, Nathan has grown his company, Aussie Batteries and Solar into one of Australia’s largest suppliers of power systems for camping and caravanning. The company was initially born from Nathan’s passion for the solar industry, camping and the outdoors and has steadily built a national

THE source bulk foods By shopping at The Source Bulk Foods you will reduce both your packaging waste and your food waste. Buying in bulk eliminates the need for fancy packaging and single-use plastic. Australians generate over 40 million tonnes of waste per year and are one of the highest waste producers in the world. Making the switch to buying in bulk will make a dramatic impact on your weekly waste and encourage you to be more mindful about your consumption choices in general. The Source Bulk Foods encourage you to bring your own jars, containers and bags for refill. You can bring in your own olive oil bottle or shampoo container and refill it instead of having to buy a whole new bottle. Reduce your use of plastic too as The Source Bulk Foods is plastic-bag free.

The Source Bulk Foods stock over 350 products with about 40 per cent of them organic. Their range of pantry staples are dried fruit, muesli, raw local honey, herbs and spices, oils, tahini, different types of flours (including gluten free), superfoods, organic teas, confectionary as well as cleaning and personal care products without the nasties. Some of the favourites include Medjool dates, almond butter and organic maple syrup. On the best-seller list are vegie chips, paleo energy balls, dried Australian mango cheeks and raw local honey. If you are looking for a welcoming smile, quality food, great prices and some good old fashioned friendly customer service then go straight to The Source.

When you buy in bulk you can scoop out exactly how much you need so there is no food waste. If a recipe requires 250 grams of quinoa, you can measure and buy exactly that rather than buying a kilo bag that may gather dust in your kitchen cupboard. Being able to buy in bulk also gives you the versatility to try

new products as you can sample small sizes of them before investing in more. With no minimum purchase of anything in store, you can also buy small quantities of various items to make up things like your own granola or muesli and get creative in the kitchen.

cfo one CFO One was born out of the belief that growing small and medium businesses are often underserviced in the area of financial management. Two years since launching, the Directors of CFO One, Michael McManus and Tamara Cross, reflect on the successes and challenges in starting what is a relatively new model on the Sunshine Coast. “When we started back in 2015, we were the only firm on the Sunshine Coast exclusively offering Outsourced CFO and management accounting services,” Michael said. “It was very much a case of testing demand in the market for these services, which are typically the domain of larger businesses.” Two years on, and now with a team of five accountants, the team at CFO One are working with a diverse range of successful Sunshine Coast businesses, while looking to add more like-minded businesses to their portfolio of clients. “Outsourcing and shared service centres are becoming widely used to increase cost efficiency without some of the risks or

chatter-boxes expertise required of performing the function in house,” Tamara said. A key part of CFO One’s model is working as part of their clients’ team focusing on financial reporting, operations, systems, and performance. The decision to bring on a CFO or internal accountant is a significant and sometimes daunting step for a business. Outsourcing this role to a team of proven operators with real life commercial experience, is now a real option for Sunshine Coast businesses. The CFO One team steps into the gap between bookkeepers, external accountants and management to bring leading principles to your organisation. “Our process involves gaining a firsthand understanding of our clients’ business at the operational level to ensure our advice is relevant and actionable,” Tamara said. “To facilitate this, we seek to work on site at our clients’ premises wherever possible or find technology based alternatives which enable close engagement between our CFOs and clients.”

Did you know 1 in 7 Australians experience difficulty communicating at some time in their lives? When that communication difficulty occurs in childhood, the impact can be significant and affect their whole life. Being able to communicate well forms the foundation for developing relationships, making friends, learning, problem solving, reading and writing. Chatter-boxes Speech Pathology Services was established on the Sunshine Coast in 2002 and has provided high quality, evidence based care for hundreds of children and their families in that time. Often when parents ring to book their child in for an appointment they say, “My child is shy and I’m not sure you’ll get much out of them,” but with therapy sessions designed individually for each child and provided in a fun, childfriendly setting, most parents find getting their child to talk isn’t the biggest problem they have to deal with – it’s getting their child to go home! Chatter-boxes pride themselves not only on the services they provide, but on the experience

the whole family receives. ‘George’ the resident coffee machine is in the waiting area for parents to use, along with free Wi-Fi and a range of magazines, books and toys for all to enjoy. Chatter-boxes is positioned to support families in the roll over into NDIS and is hosting free pre-planning information coffee sessions for families who want more information until the end of the year. The team also provides Kindy screenings and educational talks, corporate presentations and community talks on communication development, autism, play and fussy eating. Director Kylie Martin, contributes to the on-line magazine Source Kids and has written her book called Chatter-time, which is very popular in parenting circles. For more information about their services, to book an NDIS chat or to book a corporate presentation call the Chatter-boxes office on 5444 2451 or visit www.chatter-boxes.com.au and Facebook @chatterboxesspeechpathology

She launched her first Certified Green Salon called Lush Organic Hair and Spa on the Sunshine Coast in 2015 and her second called Penny Black Organic in Manly, Sydney in May 2017. Beginning her hairdressing career at the age of 16, Nanette’s commitment to the industry led her to open her own salon at the age of 21. By 30, she had developed an autoimmune disease, and thereafter breast cancer. In learning about her disease, Nanette began to question what she was constantly exposed to and whether the chemicals in her everyday working environment had contributed to her condition.

So, she embarked on an international quest with a mission of finding a solution to provide a cleaner, healthier and more positive alternative. “I collaborated with the world leaders of environmental workplaces and conducted extensive research,” she said. “The very nature and time essence of my personal and professional journey is the tapestry and personality of business. It reflects the value of how I live my everyday life, through my commitment to health, others and environment.” Nanette said the Certified Green Salon is all about wellbeing for the clients, team members and environment.
