The Living End, Birds of Tokyo and Pete Murray! Three outstanding Australian acts – here in Mackay! This event will be the first time all three have ever performed together. Another first for Mackay. It is a concert that offers a broad appeal and judging by the ticket sales our community has recognised that. The Sir Elton John Once in a Lifetime concert last year certainly put us on the international stage and proved that our team could pull off a seamless and professionally run event. There is no doubt this latest all-Aussie line-up, almost 12 months after the Sir Elton experience, will cement our region as a destination for high-calibre, well-organised events. One of the great regional selling points that we are most proud of as a council is that – like we did for Sir Elton – our community gets right behind initiatives like this. There’s no doubt in my mind that our business owners and residents alike will once again enthusiastically welcome the visitors and help promote the wonderful attributes of our region. This type of event not only promotes the economic wellbeing of our region, it builds on our fantastic community pride. Special recognition must go to the council staff who have worked for many months to make this concert a reality. A lot of planning, negotiation and hard work goes into delivering a huge event like this, so to Andrew Bobedlyk and our MECC crew we say thank you. Sugar City Sounds is going to be fantastic!

AUSSIE ROCK LEGENDS HIT TOWN Taking no prisoners and rolling on, The Living End is here.
THE Living End is Australian rock royalty. Formed in Melbourne in 1994, the band catapulted into fame in 1997 when it released a double A-side single featuring Prisoner of Society and Second Solution; songs that would become festival anthems around the world. The single peaked at #4 on the ARIA singles chart and was certified double platinum soon after its release. The band’s debut album entered the ARIA chart at #1 in Australia and eventually sold over 280,000 copies. The Living End has released seven studio albums with two debuting at #1 on the ARIA chart. Four of their albums have achieved platinum sales with two more achieving gold sales in Australia. The band has won five ARIAs and been nominated 27 times. The band’s blistering live performances have ensured they remain one of Australia’s premiere live outfits and atop of festival bills for nearly two decades. They have consistently delivered hit after hit which has allowed the band to grow a loyal and rabid fan base around the country. Earlier this year the band ventured to Germany to record their, as yet untitled, eighth studio album due out late 2018, with the first taste of the new LP released in June.

JUMPING TO PLAY IN MACKAY AGAIN The band played their last show in Mackay on a back-up generator BIRDS of Tokyo fans can expect some new tunes gracing their ears when the band takes the stage at Sugar City Sounds. Drummer Adam Weston said the band “jump” at the opportunity to play regional shows. “The opportunities are far and few between, logistically we would love to get out and do national tours at every chance we can but a lot of the time it doesn’t make sense,” he said. “When these one-off events pop up it’s fantastic.” Weston said the new material they will be belting out for their Mackay show is “reactionary” and fans can expect something more akin to hits Lanterns and This Fire. “Expect some of the usual set list numbers but a couple of songs that haven’t been heard before,” he said. With the deadline of Sugar City Sounds looming, Weston said the band was hard at work putting new material together. “It felt really good making a record like Brace, bringing things back to the jam room, but we’ll see where the new material takes us,” he said. “It’s funny with Birds of Tokyo, whatever we tend to work on tends to be quite reactionary to whatever we’ve put out the year before. “It’s going to be quite the opposite of that (album), pop is such a vague word for it, the music is quite emotive, very vocal driven, instead of everything being quite angular and hard edged. “This particular show is perfect timing. We’ve only played two shows this year, we had one in Perth for WA Day in early June, because we’ve just been writing, recording and hanging out.” It’s been almost nine years since the band last played in town, belting out their insistent, bittersweet rock anthems, which have resonated deeply with locals. But their last gig was a much more intimate show – so intimate in fact the lights dimmed off their own accord. Weston said due to inclement weather the venue lost power and it was looking like they may be playing an unplugged gig until a back-up generator kicked in. “This gig at the stadium will be much different,” he laughed.

This particular show is perfect timing. We’ve only played two shows this year. The band has lit up the main stage of festivals from Splendour In The Grass to Falls and played arenas as special guests of Muse. They’ve performed to millions on the AFL Grand Final and at the NRL’s flagship State of Origin game. Their music has featured on film and TV and earned them multiple ARIA and APRA Awards. With six albums under their belt and more than 70 of their songs featuring on Triple J, they are one of the station’s three most played artists of this millennium. And now they’re coming to Mackay. FANS READY TO SEE THE SUN Murray’s solid acoustic offerings are sure to enthral crowds. BYRON Bay singer-songwriter and one of Australia’s most loved musicians, Pete Murray earlier this year announced a stunning remix of his song Heartbeats, by ARIA-award winning Peter Mayes from PNAU. Murray has also dropped a video for the remix, a short film seeking to inspire audiences to cherish the love they share with others while they still can. This remix of Heartbeats is subtle, and truly showcases Murray’s diversity as an artist. Mayes has expertly crafted understated percussion that percolates underneath Murray’s vocal, and propels the track from heartfelt ballad into edgy new territory for Pete Murray. Fans are sure to love this rework of Heartbeats just as much as the original. “I’m excited to try and do things a little differently these days,” Murray said. “This Heartbeats remix from Peter Mayes is a fun new thing for me and I’m stoked with how it came out.” The video for Heartbeats accurately reflects the song’s lyrical theme through an honest and affecting lens. Directed by Corey Donaldson (Alex L’Estrange, Swilo, Sundown Jury), the clip is propelled by a narrative that highlights the thrill of young love, and the devastation that can ensue. Filmed in Murray’s hometown of Byron Bay, the opening sequence of the headland is a recurring setting that powerfully and poignantly closes this stunningly evocative short film. TIPS FOR CONCERT GOERS VENUE AND SHOW INFORMATION: BOX OFFICE: The Box Office is located approximately 20m from Gate 2 Bridge Rd, adjacently, on Casey Ave. The Box Office opens at 2pm on show day. CLOAKROOM FACILITIES: The Cloakroom is located between Gates 1 and Gate 2. PASS OUTS: Not available at this event. FOOD AND BEVERAGES: This is a licensed event and there will be a large range of food and beverages available. Food and beverage stalls are cash preferred (not Eftpos). Proof of age photo ID is required to purchase or consume alcohol, and service will not be provided to patrons who are under 18 years of age or intoxicated. YOUNGSTERS’ SET OF A LIFETIME Mackay group wins coveted opening slot at Sugar City Sounds MACKAY crowds and the judges were blown away by young local band ALT at Saturday’s Beer and BBQ Festival at Harrup Park, MECC and events manager Andrew Bobeldyk said. “Triple M had been profiling five local acts on air over the last few weeks and we’d seen some amazing talent, but ALT impressed us from the onset by coming into the Triple M studio and performing an original,” Mr Bobeldyk said. “The song, You Don’t Want Me, really captured our attention. “They blew Jay and Dave away and audiences really responded to their honest, upbeat sound.” ALT played off against locals Johnny Breen and band Stylus Crew at Harrup Park in the battle of the bands for a spot on the Sugar City Sounds line-up, and despite being the youngest performers, they quickly won over the judges. “These three talented musicians impressed us so much on Saturday night that I have no hesitation booking them to open for The Living End, Birds of Tokyo and Pete Murray at Sugar City Sounds,” Mr Bobeldyk said. “Sugar City Sounds is an amazing opportunity to play in front of a stadium crowd and potentially impress some of Australia’s biggest musical acts.” ALT is made up of three talented musicians – Alyssa Brache, Leyon Milner and Taylor Bell. The amazing thing about ALT is that they share the lead vocal roles and each play multiple instruments. This makes them an incredibly versatile act. The band met while at school through the Pioneer Valley Country Music Club and forged a friendship which led to the creation of an Page 18
upbeat alternate-country band. Singer Alyssa Brache said the band was very excited by the opportunity and expressed just how thankful they were to the local community for getting behind them. Amazingly, ALT actually travelled straight from the Gympie Music Muster right before their set to play at the finals at Harrup Park.

He has been praised for his song writing talents, writing most of the band’s material. This will be ALT’s first stadium gig, having previously featured heavily on the Mackay and Whitsunday pub circuit. Alyssa and Taylor are both 18 and Alyssa has started a teaching degree.
