Judges’ job a difficult one High standards as awards celebrate years of success and prestige WHEN I think back over the years of Master Builders Housing & Construction award ceremonies, I see smiling, excited faces, champagne glasses clinking as success and hard work is celebrated. The steel caps and hi-vis are stowed away, the gala gowns and dinner coats dusted, shoes shined and the daily grind put on hold for a night of celebration. Colleagues, contractors and connections come together as we celebrate those at the forefront of building innovation and quality craftsmanship. Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards cater for entrants ranging from apprentices to trade contractors and small family businesses to the biggest names in the building and construction industry. It is with great honour that I welcome you to the 2018 winners’ magazine. Over the past few months, our panel of judges have attended each entrant’s property and made a thorough assessment against a list of strict criteria. This included quality of workmanship, degree of construction difficulty, external appeal, siting and aspect along with amenities and aesthetics. The judges then returned to our Mackay headquarters to deliberate. Over a period of painstaking days, they

compiled a list of finalists. After much passionate discussion and, sometimes, debate a winner was selected for each category. Across the board, the feedback from our judges has noted the high calibre of entrants in the Mackay and Whitsunday region and I thank those builders for their stellar work in making our judges’ job a difficult one. Each of our entrants has put their business, product and workmanship under scrutiny as part of an extremely competitive process. Their work, whether a winner this year or not, is a credit to the unwavering quality and craftsmanship of a Master Builder. Since 1882, Master Builders has been the voice of the industry, representing the interests of our members and the broader industry. WITH strict judging criteria and consistently growing entries year on year, a win in the prestigious awards program has become a pinnacle those in the industry aim to achieve. The first awards ceremony was held in 1987 when at the time, the program was known as the Housing Awards Competition. In 1988, it expanded to include residential housing and commercial industrial fields and became known as the Housing & Construction Awards. The new program was run in conjunction with the Housing and Construction Conference in ’88 which formed part of Brisbane’s Expo ’88 program. In 1993, the awards were opened to regional Queensland and the first Master Builders Regional Housing & Construction Awards were launched. The state-wide ceremonies have grown from strength to strength over the years, with Brisbane growing from a small ceremony with just a handful of categories to more than 50 award categories including construction, housing, trade contractor/specialty and individual. In 2017 we had the honour of adding three new categories to the awards program including Diversity and the Institute of Building Consultants, which joined the ranks of our highly regarded Apprentice of the Year, Women in Building and Rising Star in the Individual category. FROM the first footings to the front door, husband-and-wife team Ben and Jodie Ferdinand pour their heart and soul into every project that comes their way. The Proserpine couple own and operate Coastal Edge Constructions and may have started off small but have since grown their family business into be one of the most respected in the residential construction industry. The Ferdinands have found their niche in building high-end homes for international and interstate clients and their hard work was recognised at the recent 2018 Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builders Awards. For the second time in three years, Coastal Edge Constructions clinched the coveted House of the Year award for their Airlie Beach project The Cove. The five-bedroom, three-bathroom timber home focuses on natural and raw design with features including Italian glass lights, black bean timber vanities, natural limestone tiled bathrooms, spotted blue gum timber flooring throughout and custom-made New Guinea rose wood bi-fold doors and windows which allows the outside in. The ceilings were made from locally-sourced spotted blue gum tongue and groove VJ which is a

great feature to the outdoor area, which overlooks a 13m pool. Mrs Ferdinand said the House of the Year win came as a total surprise. “We weren’t expecting it,” she said. “We have only nominated for House of the Year one other time and that was in 2016 and we won for our Coray Bay projects on Hamilton Island. We definitely weren’t expecting to win it again. “We’re not a big company. We’re a small company that takes on big projects and clients like that. Every house we build we put our heart and soul into. All of the people that work for us know what Ben expects on each job, you need that consistency throughout each job and clients really appreciate it. The clients are thrilled to know their home has been named House of the Year.” The Cove project also clinched Coastal Edge Constructions the Individual Home $951,000 – $1.25 million award as well as Best Residential Swimming Pool. Coastal Edge Constructions also claimed the awards for Best Residential Bathroom and Best Use of Sloping Sites for their Turtle Bay project at Airlie Beach and their Marina Views project won Individual Home $1.26 million – $2 million.

First-time win for family firm Jorgensen Builders claim multiple awards for heritage-style home construction for West Mackay family

“We worked with them on the design and it had to fit in with the heritage style, hence the roof design and the cladding of the house,” he said. “We also had to work with the flood levels their so the slab is really high.” Keeping in mind the clients were a young family with two children, Mr Jorgensen said the design had an open plan, family-orientated focus – one the judges appreciated. “We weren’t expecting to win the President’s Award. I didn’t really know much about it until it was in my face,” Mr Jorgensen said. “We are a little family-run company so it is nice to knock a few of the big project builders off their perch I guess.” Hunter 245 also collected the award for Individual Home $251,000 – $350,000 while Jorgensen Builders also won the Individual Home $551,000 – $650,000 category for their Riversleigh project. Having enjoyed success with their first entries in the Master Builders awards, Mr Jorgensen said he and Shani were already looking forward to nominating again next year. “We are doing a pretty big house at Settlers Rise at the moment and I think they are wanting to enter it in the awards next year,” he said.

NOMINATING for the Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builders awards for the first time in 2018, Aaron Jorgensen never expected to take home one of the most sought-after gongs up for grabs. Mr Jorgensen, who owns and operates family business Jorgensen Builders with his wife Shani, won the prestigious President’s Award for their Hunter 245 project in West Mackay. Mr Jorgensen said the clients were removing a property in West Mackay and wanted a heritage style house designed for their corner block.

The owner’s brief to Mr Mitchell was to build “a bar on the beach”, with the major design concept to develop a venue reflective of the Whitsundays and designed to capture the natural light and welcome in the breeze. and subcontractors throughout the construction. Distinctive focus points in the building include wide use of locally-sourced materials with large-scale quality timber workmanship throughout. The showpiece of the Northerlies project is the hull of a salvaged 55-foot ex-prawn trawler that was split and separated to form the structure of the main bar. For his work, Mr Mitchell won the coveted Project of the Year award along with the Retail Facilities up to $5 million, Tourism and Leisure Facilities up to $10 million and Commercial Building up to $5 million awards.

ARCHITECTURALLY striking from every angle, Greene Homes Whitsunday’s Dingo Beach Holiday House project is certainly worthy of a Master Builders award. The impressive beachfront property, the first of its kind for the Greene Homes team, took out the title for Best Use of Steel Frame Housing. It’s a fitting reward for both the property and the clients as it was built for Dave and Terese Parnell of Parnell’s Metal Industries – who are also neighbours, friends and important trade industry colleagues of the Greene Homes team. To add another element to the mix, the Parnells’ son, apprentice Jack Parnell, helped build the home. Steel was the recurring theme throughout the home, with a structural steel frame, steel architectural details around the entertaining area roofline and Colorcote Magnaflow corrugated steel roof, wall cladding and eaves. To balance the abundance of steel features, a blond wood influence was incorporated throughout the home in everything from the ceiling of the outdoor entertaining area to the blackbutt

floating timber staircase. Blackbutt was also used to create a feature wall behind the bed in the expansive master retreat and in his and hers bar tops on the private parent’s retreat balcony. Aside from the materials used, the sheer size of the retreat is incredible as it takes up almost the entire top level of the home with additions such as a kitchenette, lounge area, walk-through robe and large ensuite. The bathroom vanity itself is a feature of form and function with a custom-made, cast-concrete basin and benchtop. The underlying cabinetry contains storage and an integrated laundry chute to the lower level. The shower area is generous, featuring dual rain-head shower spouts, and is unimpeded by screens. Stylish matt-black tapware is featured throughout. Back downstairs in the kitchen, a soft-grey, concrete-look manufactured stone waterfall island bench impresses. And in the bathrooms, satin-finished, custom-cast concrete basins. The concrete adds a contemporary touch to the beachside vibe and complements the blond

timber-look cabinetry. Glass panelling and doors in the living area and kitchen ensure the beach-facing aspect of the home enjoys bountiful natural light and beautiful views. The rest of the colour palette is kept neutral: white walls and ceilings in keeping with the beachside theme. An enjoyable collection of tile splashbacks add touches of visual interest and complement the fun, holiday-home feel. Black cabinetry, window framing and structural steel introduce a sophistication to elevate the design aesthetic from beachy to a more contemporary coastal cool. Overall, this holiday house is the new Dingo Beach chic.

GrEENE HOmEs WHITsuNDAy WINNEr 2018 BEsT sTEEL FrAmE HOusING Who doesn’t want a seaside holiday house? And how could we resist our first beachfront build even if it was for our neighbours, friends and important trade industry colleagues, Dave and Terese Parnell of Parnell’s Metal Industries. Further to the fray we would have their son, our apprentice, Jack Parnell, build it. What great build doesn’t begin with a degree of trepidation?

This is however no tin shanty. Nor does it fall into a coastal cliché. Innovative design use of the corrugated cladding makes a novel feature of the eaves.

Being the home of the director of Parnell’s Metal Industries, not surprisingly, this build was going to feature steel. Structural steel frame, steel architectural details around the entertaining area roofline and Colorcote Magnaflow corrugated steel roof, wall cladding and eaves a product developed specifically to deal with the rigors of coastal conditions.

The blonde timber influence is carried throughout the home with the beautiful blackbutt floating timber staircase, feature wall behind the master bed and his and hers bar tops on the private parents’ retreat balcony. FROM Botanical to Curved, Executive Living Homes’ ‘Abode’ projects certainly caught the eye of the judges at the 2018 Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builders Awards. The Mackay construction business, run by Matt and Kate Vella, took out two awards, including the Individual Home $451,000-$550,000 category for their Botanical Abode property. The Botanical Drive, Ooralea home was built for a young, modern newlywed couple seeking a long linear home with a focus on ensuring adaptability for a growing family. With four bedrooms and multiple living spaces throughout the home, the clients also requested separate children’s and parent’s retreats. The theme of the parent’s retreat was ‘luxury’, while the children’s retreat linked to a patio where the young children could play. A large rumpus room was also incorporated in the home to allow for a home hair dressing salon with a private entrance to separate work and family. The Vella team also won the Individual Home

$751,000-$950,000 category for their Curved Abode project in Alligator Creek. The modern rural Stellajean Crescent home was centred around a large section of curved glazing to capture the views to the southwest. Stepped over a sloping property, the home incorporates various floor levels throughout, including a main living area with sunken lounging space and a sunken media room, while the bedrooms were stepped above the living spaces. TONY and Chanelle Gangemi are no strangers to winning Master Builder awards but the excitement and honour of hearing their business recognised will never fade. For the past decade, family-owned Proserpine business Gangemi Cabinet Makers has dominated the Residential Trade Contractor of the Year category at the Mackay and Whitsunday awards and this year clinched their 10th title in a row. Mrs Gangemi said taking home the award always came as a surprise. “It is always humbling every year. The feeling never fades. Every year we enter and hope we do win but when you do it’s like ‘okay, we are doing something right’,” she said. “We have been operating for 14 years. It is nice to know you have done a good job and it is being recognised.” The project that earned the firm the prestigious prize this year was a single-storey, modern tropical-style house incorporating a private hangar at the WAVE airpark in Flame Tree, Whitsundays. The functional, stylish home was designed to suit the client’s lifestyle with the kitchen and living area in the heart of the home. As much as Tony and I own the business, they are the ones that actually do the work and it is a massive team effort. “We had two tables on the night. Seabreeze Hotel project earns Mackay firm gong MyCore Constructions claims major award after successful transformation of the popular Seabreeze Hotel, all done inside a very tight timeline

IN JUST 12 weeks, MyCore Constructions were able to transform the Seabreeze Hotel to create a seamless indoor-outdoor dining and bar space. The Mackay-based exclusive design and build construction company, which caters for high-end residential, commercial, industrial and mining, secured the award for Refurbishment/Renovation up

to $750,000 at the 2018 Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builders Awards for their Seabreeze Hotel extension project. MyCore were given a very tight timeline of 12 weeks to complete the build in order for the business to trade. The project included removing the existing outdoor structure, demolishing the existing entry and outdoor bar surrounds, demolishing the existing barbecue area and cutting the existing concrete for new footings. In a bid to blend the original structure, which was built in the ’80s, multiple finishes including block, feature brick, timber, ply ceiling, FC cladding and sheeting, render and glass were all incorporated into the build. One of the main features of the extended space is a vertical stacking door, three metres high by four metres wide, that was chosen to make a statement.

Modern take on last original school building Mackay’s Fergus Builders win Refurbishment and Renovation award for challenging transformation of St Francis Xavier Catholic Primary School project HAVING worked at St Francis Xavier Catholic Primary School on numerous projects over the past 20 years, Fergus Builders were thrilled to be awarded the contract to transform the school’s last remaining ‘old’ building. The Mackay based residential, commercial and industrial construction firm, which have been operating since 1983 and is under the direction of Ben Hilder and Nathan Borg, won the Refurbishment/Renovation over $750,000 for the project at the 2018 Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builders Awards. The project, which involved the renovation of a two-storey classroom block that fronts Mackenzie Street in West Mackay, came with a few challenges. As the block was situated in the middle of the day-to-day school activities, the nominated site access was also the entry for the school drop off and pick-up zone which provided a challenge for the Fergus team to manage the build process while maintaining safe access to more than 300 parents each day. Despite the hurdles, the Fergus team powered ahead and completed the build in two stages. Stage one involved completely stripping back the old building to a bare shell and installing a new amenities

This included extending the upper floor by way of a suspended deck. The school now has a very functional building with eye-grabbing flair that the Fergus Builders team say was a pleasure to construct.

Modern and heritage a winning combination Versatility was the key to these two projects – one that included desirable modern features and the other giving new life to a much loved family home DIXON Homes Mackay have added two new awards to the trophy cabinet after projects ‘The Patrick’ and ‘Modified SC2005’ claimed awards at the 2018 Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builders Awards. Taking out the Display Home $351,000 category, Dixon Homes’ Modified SC2005 property in North Mackay was designed with the intention to show prospective clients that there is more to Dixon Homes than just bricks and mortar. When designing the property, the respected Mackay construction business took one of their existing designs and included some subtle modifications to meet current market trends such as the butler’s pantry, study nook, glassless shower recesses and an outdoor kitchen. Their attention to detail and quality in the finished product gave credence to their ability to show variation and flexibility with their designs. Like most of Dixon Homes’ designs, the home featured larger than usual doorways, open-plan living and a practical layout. They were also very particular in maintaining a

neutral palette with the finished product, adding an occasional delicate splash of colour. Dixon Homes also claimed the sought-after Best Heritage Renovation award for their ‘The Patrick’ property in North Mackay. This renovation was close to a rebuild, but as it was an emotional journey for the client who had lived and raised her family there for more than 50 years Dixon Homes’ promise to her was to keep as much of the original building as they could while giving it a new lease on life. The original building had already seen two or three extensions and makeovers over the years. With close contact with the client and their personal preferences with the interior design and finishes, Dixon Homes was able to produce a beautiful new home while maintaining the character and charm of its time. Clinic revamp creates welcoming space Experienced Mackay builder transforms tenancy into playful yet professional space

WOW is the first word that pops to mind when you step inside Grays Chiropractic and Wellness in Ooralea. The tenancy, located at the new Ooralea GP Super Clinic, has been refurbished to the highest standard by Roebuck Designer Homes. So much so that the project took out the the Health Facilities up to $20 million category at the 2018 Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builders Awards. The space comprises an open-plan waiting room, a kids’ corner, storage nook, an initial consultation room, six treatment rooms, an administration office, a shared reception and waiting area. An upgrade to the sanitary compartment and a staff kitchen complete the design. The glass façades of the tenancy have been skinned with signage film which provides privacy to the internal offices and still allows light to penetrate the building. The issue of natural light infiltrating the rear treatment rooms was overcome via the use of high glazed panels. The automatic entry doors were repositioned. The internal consultation rooms are accessible via a central corridor with a playful “spine”-like detail made
