he observance of the city’s business month in the last nine years is like the unfolding of a story. It is the continuing saga of the city’s entrepreneurs. We started with wanting to strengthen and support existing SMEs. Then, we wanted to increase the entrepreneur population. Soon after, we wanted to improve the level of competency And competitiveness of our SMEs and increase the chances of surviving in the global arena. This is the story from the LGU’s perspective. The other viewpoint is from the people. These are the stories within Yaman Gensan that are truly amazing, engaging, inspiring, intriguing and exciting. Stories about real

people with real struggles and real victories. These stories are the fuel that enables the local government, the SMED Council and the Department of Trade and Industry to continue tirelessly in guiding, supporting and investing in the city’s SMEs. As the annual event approaches its first decade, I dream of a single perspective for Yaman Gensan. Let the YG celebrations be handled entirely by innovative and lateral-thinking Generals, which features Activity that empowers local entrepreneurs to become more responsive to the demands of the Global Community, thus giving substance to this year’s theme -- “Negosyong Lokal sa Pananaw na Global.”

agandang Gensan! Moving forward demands a strong groundwork to support future endeavors. It is a matter of introducing the cornerstones in proper locations to set the motion towards a conceived destination. The thought behind Yaman Gensan precisely aims to lay the foundation which will eventually lead our city to economic progress. It is vital that we take advantage of human resource and utilize the same in a manner that will help not only the city fight poverty but at the same time give the people an opportunity to earn a decent source of income. Small medium enterprises play significant roles in bringing

the concept of entrepreneurship to the masses. Hence, skills training, financing, livelihood seminars and similar support are essential to cater the various demands of future entrepreneurs. The more people investing, the better it is for the local economy. We congratulate the SMED Council for once again bringing our dream closer to reality. The office of the undersigned as well the local government is supportive to these endeavors with the end of encouraging the people to undertake business opportunities. Mabuhay!

message from the president M agandang Gensan! Through this year’s month-long celebration of YAMAN Gensan -with its roster of capability building and skills training workshops, technology transfer activities, product exhibits, job and trade fairs, and business conferences, including the Entrepreneurs’ Forum and Young Entrepreneurs’ Fair, all geared for the city’s studentry and partners in education, and most of all the entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs alike -- we at the General Santos City Small and Medium Enterprise Development Council, Inc. (GSC SMEDCI) continue to uphold our commitment to promote creative ideas and positive practices for achieving better levels of productivity, competitiveness, and profitablity within the MSME sector in our area. All these activities were carefully planned and designed to spur job creation, entrepreneurship, and investments both by budding entrepreneurs and homegrown businesses.

The GSC SMEDCI lives and shares the dream of a progressive MSME Community in General Santos City. Over the years, through your continued involvement and active support, we are empowered and inspired to remain true to our zeal of forwarding the interests of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), as well as to reassure them that we are their allies as they grow and expand their businesses. With this goal in mind, the reality still remains -- that much still needs to be done to develop and grow our MSME sector and strengthen its capacity to contribute to local and national economic development. The challenges will always be there along the way -- the hurdles a constant reminder that every difficulty is an opportunity, every misstep is a guide to a new direction. We should not allow those challenges to distract us from how we should think and act. We can either get bitter or get better. The choice is ours to make.

We certainly hope to see you all once again in next year’s 10th YAMAN Gensan! Until then, let’s keep the entrepreneurial spirit burning!
