RESPECT ON THE ROAD A Two-Way Street

An Refresher Course for Good Drivers

from the Police Protective Fund

FACT: More police officers are killed or injured each year in vehicle related incidents than in violent confrontations with firearms.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION is a nationwide public awareness campaign to bring this tragic fact before the American public. Last year, the program, sponsored by the Police Protective Fund, reached millions of Americans with a reminder that is both simple and vital to the safety of law enforcers and citizens. That message is...

Hazardous working conditions are an inevitable part of every law enforcer’s job – especially in traffic enforcement. However, PROCEED WITH CAUTION maintains that many of these dangers can be prevented when citizens practice safer driving habits.

Here are some safety tips worth remembering...

Expect The Unexpected A driver should always anticipate reduced speed limits; traffic lane changes; unexpected officers or workers on the road. Plan Enough Travel Time Expect delays or unexpected changes in traffic flow in order to avoid hurrying to destination.

RELAX! Be patient and stay calm behind the wheel. Relax and remember that work zones and accidents happen and there is no need to feel upset or impatient with traffic situations.

DON'T TAILGATE

Never tailgate and keep a safe distance from the car you are behind in order minimize any chance for a collision.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE Give public safety officials the space to do their job. When passing by an accident, stalled vehicle, police car or work zone, make certain that you have allowed enough room in order to avoid any collision or mishap.

PAY ATTENTION Be on alert for flaggers, cones, or flares. These alerts are vital in order to protect the work area or traffic accident and must be followed for safety reasons.

STAY ALERT & UNDISTRACTED Pay full attention to the road ahead and avoid any extra curricular activity within your cabin or on the dash while driving and proceeding through work zones or accidents.

KEEP UP WITH THE

TRAFFIC FLOW Stay with the flow of traffic. Never gauck or race to merge with traffic that is nearing a work zone or accident.

THE TIPPING

POINT

Roads are becoming more congested, making tempers short, exposing ever more drivers to a highly contagious form of aggressive driving. America may well be reaching a tipping point.

CAUSE FOR HOPE Remember...like aggression, courteous driving is also contagious — the scale does tip both ways.
