2014 Outlook

Loren Mitchell Junior Forward

RED WOLVES LOOK TO CAPITALIZE ON MOMENTUM No one can question that each of the last two seasons have been the successful periods on Arkansas State soccer history. Head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge has built the Red Wolves into a dominant force in the Sun Belt Conference and now he and his squad must turn their attention to maintaining the success the team has enjoyed. Under Ziyenge’s direction, the Red Wolves have won 21 games over the last two seasons and achieved its highest regular season finish in the Sun Belt Conference by finished third in the league standings. However, the challenge to remain as one of the elite teams will be difficult as A-State said goodbye to First-Team All-Conference defender Lindsay Johansen and forward Christina Fink who were both pivotal pieces over the last two years. Ziyenge has followed a formula that has turned A-State in contenders in the league by signing a mix of homegrown and international talent. The 2014 roster will feature four players from outside the United States combined with nine players from the states of Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri and Texas. That international talent includes new signees Alexis Philippe (goalkeeper) and defender Carmen Simon both of whom figure to see playing time as true freshmen. That youth will team with a strong group of upperclassmen to leads to the Red Wolves into the 2014 season as the charge toward the top of the standings in this new era of SBC soccer. With just three seniors on the team, the Red Wolves will have to mature quickly and have new players step-up into leadership roles. Loren Mitchell, who led the team in goals and points as a sophomore, will be looked as one of the team’s leaders while defender Katie Hosea will anchor the backline. Mitchell led A-State in most offensive categories and tied the single-season Arkansas State record with 12 goals in one year. She also became just the third player in school history to be named to the SBC All-Tournament team and

4

teamed with Johansen as a first-team selection on the all-conference team. Mitchell also set the school record for most points in a season with 28 and accounted for 24 percent of A-State’s 114 points. Her play as the lead striker opened up opportunities for Samhia Simao who was second on the team with six goals after appearing in just 14 games. The duo combined to score 46 percent of the Red Wolves’ goals in 2013 and will be counted again to lead the attack in the upcoming year. Simao is arguable the most versatile player on the roster with ability to start for the team in either an attacking or defensive midfield role. Katey Carmichael is also a player that can play multiple roles but served primarily as an attacking forward last year. The defensive backline has been a strength of the Red Wolves for each of the last two years and 2014 figures to be no different. Junior Jordan Adams started all 20 games and Mykel Ward made 15 starts after coming a serious leg injury in 2012. Hosea will join the duo, while sophomore Katherine Padgett played in 10 games in her first year of collegiate and should see her role expand this year. In goal A-State has a benefit it did not have in 2013, experience. Amanda Lee tied the school record for most wins in goal with eight and made 92 saves, the third most in the league. Now a junior, Lee figures to see the bulk of the minutes in goal but will also be charged with teaching a pair of freshman goalkeepers should they be called upon. One the newcomers in goal, Sara Wicks, hail from St. Johns, Newfoundland in Canada while Alexis Philippe is from Ballwin, Mo. Both figure to battle for the No. 2 spot in fall camp. Joining the program will be eight newcomers, including six freshman and two junior-college transfers. Lexi Riggs and Briana Williams will add depth to the defensive backline after both spent time in the juco ranks. Riggs will have two years of

2014 Arkansas state SOCCER reference guide

eligibility remaining after two seasons at Navarro College in Texas, while Williams will have one year after coming in from College of Southern Maryland. A-State kicks off the 2014 season with a road matchup at Murray State Aug. 22, followed by a three-game home stand that includes games against Tulsa, Central Arkansas and Mississippi State. The regular season home opener will take place Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. against Tulsa, while the Bears will come to Jonesboro Sunday, Aug. 31. Mississippi State, whom A-State defeated at home in 2011, will take on the Red Wolves Friday, Sept. 5. The month of September features six home games that include non-conference games against Mississippi Valley State (Sept. 12), Southeast Missouri State (Sept. 19) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Sept. 21). A-State’s only two road games in the month are at Missouri State (Sept. 7) and at Southern Mississippi (Sept. 14). The Red Wolves open Sun Belt Conference play at home against Texas State Sept. 26 followed by a clash with conference newcomer Appalachian State Sept. 28. The month of October features a five-game road swing starting with a trip to Georgia Southern (Oct. 3) and Georgia State (Oct. 5), followed by matches at Louisiana-Monroe (Oct. 10) and at Louisiana-Lafayette (Oct. 12). The road trip comes to an end with a matchup against in-state foe UALR Oct. 18. A-State concludes the regular season with sa pair of home games against South Alabama (Oct. 24) and Troy (Oct. 26). Prior to the start of the regular season the Red Wolves will play two home exhibition matches. The squad will host St. Louis Friday, Aug. 15 and Memphis Sunday, Aug. 17. The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be Nov. 5-9 in Mobile, Ala.

A-State Soccer FORWARDS The attacking front line for Arkansas State was one of the most successful combinations in school history. With Loren Mitchell becoming one of the feared goal scorers in the Sun Belt and Samhia Simao providing a nice counter balance that made the Red Wolves one the top goal scoring teams in the league. Mitchell, Simao and Christina Fink combined to score 40 percent of A-State’s goals in 2013 and now the Red Wolves face

the difficult of finding a replacement for Fink who graduated. A strong candidate to fill the void is senior Katey Carmichael who started in 16 games as sophomore and has a quick strike and exceptional speed on the pitch. Carmichael scored three goals and had three assists a year ago and could see her opportunities rise as more scoring options open as teams begin to key in on Mitchell and Simao.

While Mitchell, Simao and Carmichael are projected to be catalyst in 2014, others will need to step up to fill other voids as well. Christine Giles ability to move between an attacking forward and midfielder and her presence in the middle of the field will be missed. Sophomores Ava Abner and Jenna Duerst could do well in filling that role after both had successful freshman campaigns. Durest played in 18 games and scored a goal and as-

sisted on two more while Abner played in 14 games and also scored a goal. Both figure to try and fill the role Giles’ had while also adding support in the midfield if needed.

lineup after primarily coming off the bench in 2013. Zeledon saw limited action, playing in only six games with one start, but should see her role increase after becoming more familiar with Coach Ziyenge’s style of play. Newcomers Tayler Carter and Jenna Vaught will add depth to the midfield and could find there into the starting lineup with a strong fall camp. Carter comes to A-State from Bremerton, Wash., where she

was a first-team all-league selection for her high school team and led her club team, the Washington Premier FC 95, to the 2011 Washington Cup championship. Vaught was a four-year varsity player and Francis Howl High School in St. Louis where she collected numerous awards and honors, including being the team captain in her senior campaign. A-State forward Katey Carmichael could also slide into a

midfielder’s role if needed while many of the Red Wolves’ defenders could also move up into the midfield to provide supports.

stantial minutes during the Red Wolves’ historic season in 2013. Hosea will assume the leadership role as the group’s only senior; while Ward will be counted on to take another step forward in her recovery from a knee injury in 2012. A total of nine players on the 2014 roster are listed as defenders and each figure to play a role in one way or another. Navarro College transfer Lexi Riggs will provide im-

mediate depth while Katherine Padgett hopes to recover from an injury that cost her the final two months of the regular season. Sophomore Jordan Adams saw her role grow as a sophomore in the latter part of the season after starting every game a year ago. Freshmen Nina Simon, Lauren Crimi, and Carmen Simon will add depth to the defense and may have a big impact if they have a strong training session during the fall.

Briana Williams will also provide immediate support after spending a year at the College of South Maryland and will have three years of eligibility remaining with Arkansas State. In all, the A-State defense has become known for its rugged style of play and will continue that style as it enters a new season.

with eight wins and played the second most minutes in goal in school history. She will be the favorite to continue to her role has the main stopper again in 2014. Questions behind Lee do exist however. Michaela Supple had her 2013 season cut short due to injury and is no longer on the team due to those injuries. Two freshmen, Alexis Philippe and Sara Wicks, will join the goalkeeping contingent and will battle for the No. 2 spot behind

Lee. Wicks was part of a club team in Canada that won a U-16 Atlantic Championship and was named tournament MVP two years later of the Atlantic U-18 Tournament. She also has national team experience, having participated in the Canadian regional training program. Philippe won a state championship as a junior and has also gained national team experience with a stink tin the Olympic Devel-

opment Program in 2010-11. Philippe has already developed chemistry with a pair of her fellow Red Wolves teammates in Nina Simon and Jenna Vaught at the trio played on the same club team.

MIDFIELDERS

Position Breakdown

The midfield section may have the most questions surrounding it entering the 2014 season. The loss of Christina Fink, who often shifted between and attacking forward and a midfield position and the move of Samhia Simao to a full-time attacking forward leaves the section with some holes. Seniors Jena’ Kelley and Crystal Zeledon will anchor the group in the midsection with Kelley potentially moving into the starting

DEFENDERS This year’s group of defenders has experience but will be missing a pair of central players due to graduation and a transfer. Firstteam All-Sun Belt Conference selection Lindsay Johansen transferred to be closer to her home in Canada and Alex Furr graduated, creating a gap in the back line. That gap will be filled by an experienced group that includes senior Katie Hosea and sophomore Mykel Ward, both whom saw sub-

GOALKEEPERS Entering the 2013 season the goalkeepers had the most questions surrounding them. Entering 2014 those questions no longer remain. Amanda Lee won the goalkeeper job during fall camp and continued to get better as the season progressed. She made 92 saves, the third most in school history and the third most in the Sun Belt last year, while her 5.41 saves per game was the highest percentage in the league. She tied a school record

Head Coach

Tafadzwa Ziyenge is entering his fifth season as head coach at Arkansas State and is coming off the most successful season in school history. The Red Wolves had one of its best seasons in school history in 2013 with a 10-7-3 overall mark, the second most wins in school history. In the Sun Belt Conference the squad went 4-4 and advanced to the SBC Tournament semifinals for the second time in school history. Ziyenge also guided the Red Wolves to their first outright victory in the SBC Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening round (A-State had previously advanced in the tournament via a shootout, which officially is recorded as a tie in the overall record). Several school records also fell in 2013, including most points (114) and assists (36) in a single season. A-State also tied the school record for the longest winning streak during the season at three games and also did not lose a match in four straight games, which also tied for the longest span in school history. Under Ziyenge’s direction, the Arkansas State soccer program has won 21 matches, the most in any two-year span since the school adopted soccer in 2000. The squad has also won 15 of it last 20 home matches and tied the record for most home wins in a single season at seven in 2013. Ziyenge guided the Red Wolves to an 11-8-1 record in 2012, which was the most wins in school history. A-State also notched a 5-4-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. A-State set a number of school records in 2012 including the record for most home wins in a season (7), the longest home winning streak (6) and goals (41). In 2012, the Red Wolves were honored for their outstanding performance in the classroom by being awarded the Sun Belt Conference’s Team GPA award at the annual Championship Banquet. A-State finished the year with a team GPA of 3.599, which was the highest of any team in the conference. The team was also honored by the National Coaches Association of America and was given an academic award for having the seventh highest team GPA among all Division I women’s soccer teams. Under Ziyenge’s guidance, several players have achieved all-conference status including Loren Mitchell and Lindsay Johansen who became the first players in Arkansas State soccer history appear on all-conference team during the same year. Mitchell was also named to the SBC All-Tournament team after scoring 12 goals during the year, which was tied for the most in school history in a single season. Ziyenge came to A-State after leading both the men's and women's teams at University of Alabama-Huntsville. SUPER SOPHOMORE Loren Mitchell rewrote that Arkansas State history books in her sophomore season. She tied the school record for most goals in a single season with 12 and set a school record with 28 points. She became just the third player in school history to be named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournment Team and set a school record with five game-winning goals in 2013. ALL-CONFERENCE EXCELLENCE A year after having just its first SBC All-Conference selection in school history, the Red Wolves placed two players in the 2013 team. Loren Mitchell and Lindsay Johansen became the first players in school history to be selected to the SBC FirstTeam at the end of 2013. The Sun Belt Conference mantra “Together We Rise” exemplifies what has quickly become America’s most up‐and‐coming collegiate athletics conference. Founded in 1976, the Sun Belt has adapted and evolved in its nearly 40 year existence. The league was originally formed as a home for some of the nation’s premier mid‐major basketball teams and it wasn’t until a number of changes and the demand for a higher national profile that the league began sponsoring football in 2001. Because of this decision to move the league in to the group of football playing conferences, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18‐member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics. With the 2014‐15 year marking the debut of the College Football Playoff (CFP) the Sun Belt continues to find itself among the 10 premier college football conferences and the new system is guaranteed universal access based on performance – there are no automatic qualifiers for the playoff system. Additionally, the CFP will mean that a spot among the premier bowl games of college football will be guaranteed to the highest‐ranked champion from the other “Group of Five” conferences: the Sun Belt Conference, American Athletic Conference, Mountain West Conference, Mid‐American Conference and Conference USA. With the College Football Playoff included with the league’s other bowl arrangements, the Sun Belt Conference is tied to seven total bowl games. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, the GoDaddy Bowl, the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl, the Cure Bowl (debuting in 2015) all guarantee a home for a bowl eligible Sun Belt Conference team each year. And beginning with the 2016 season, the Sun Belt is also part of a rotation of conferences that will send a team to the Bahamas Bowl and the Miami Beach Bowl. The influx of bowl game opportunities comes at a time when the Sun Belt Conference is breaking win records year after year and the league is continually exceeding expectations. The Sun Belt’s 21 non‐conference football wins in the 2013 season was a new record for the league ‐ eclipsing the mark of 19 set the year prior. Additionally of note for the league’s non‐conference win total was that the Sun Belt fared well against its peer opponents in the non‐AQ BCS ranks. The Sun Belt finished a combined 8‐1 against members of Conference‐USA (4‐1), the Mid‐American Conference (3‐0) and the Mountain West Conference (1‐0). The Sun Belt also had the best overall non‐conference win percentage when comparing the four non‐AQ conferences. The 2013 football season also saw two teams take

home bowl championship trophies, as UL Lafayette won its third consecutive R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and Arkansas State won its second consecutive GoDaddy Bowl. Of course, football wasn’t the only sport that has seen recent success and all of the league’s sports have contributed to the “Rise” of the Sun Belt Conference. In men’s basketball, league newcomer Georgia State put together one of the best conference performances in league history in winning the 2013‐14 Sun Belt regular season championship. UL Lafayette captured the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in what was one of the most thrilling finishes to the Sun Belt championship game in recent memory. An influx of young coaches mixed with proven veterans makes both Sun Belt men’s and women’s basketball an exciting brand with vast potential. The Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships were played in the hometown of the Sun Belt at Lakefront Arena this past March in what was the first of a three year deal that will have Sun Belt hoops in the “Big Easy” each March. Baseball and softball continue to be among the league’s standard‐bearers for success as each continues to send teams on deep postseason runs and teams are easy to find in the national polls. In baseball, UL Lafayette held a unanimous No. 1 national ranking during the 2014 season and hosted a NCAA Tournament Regional and Super Regional. Not to be outdone, the UL Lafayette softball team also hosted the NCAA Tournament rounds and qualified for the 2014 edition of the Women’s College World Series. In recent years as many as four Sun Belt teams have advanced to the baseball postseason in a single year, while as many as three Sun Belt softball teams have accomplished that feat. While the accomplishments of the Sun Belt’s student‐athletes and coaches deserve great praise, so to do the league’s administrators who have helped set the tone for the future of the conference. “We have never been as strong as we are now academically and financially and I believe we are getting stronger all the time athletically,” former Sun Belt Conference President and Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. said recently. “I truly believe that the best is yet to come.” The Sun Belt Conference’s membership consists of 11 football members for 2014 – Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Idaho, UL Lafayette, UL Monroe, New Mexico State, South Alabama, Texas State and Troy. UALR and UT Arlington compete in all‐sports as non‐football members while Idaho and New Mexico State are football only members. Prominent Sun Belt alumni include Lyndon B. Johnson, former President of the United States (Texas State), former All‐Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (UL Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (UL Monroe), CEO of Duck Commander and Buck Commander Willie Robertson (UL Monroe) and DeMarcus Ware, an All‐Pro NFL linebacker (Troy).

The Arkansas State University Athletic Department announced the second largest single donation in its history, a $400,000 gift from Charles Luter that is being used to enhance the athletic academic facility, at a press conference held at the newly named Charles F. Luter Family Academic Success Center in September of 2008. The Charles Luter Family Academic Success Center serves as a foundation for structure, discipline and organization for the education of all ASU student-athletes. The facility, coupled with innovative programs and equipment, currently houses the academic support staff, tutors, computer labs, a resource room, study areas, tutorial rooms, small group study centers, a large conference room, the compliance office and spring sports coaching offices. The athletic department came back on May 20, 2011 to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open-house reception for to showcase some of the renovations that have occured since the donation was made. Among the most recent and noticeable modifications to the Charles Luter Family Academic Success Center is a new foyer housed in a brick and rock exterior that, along with new landscaping, gives the entrance to the building a modern look and creates a stronger image. The actual foyer has a large Red Wolves logo embedded in a terrazzo flooring that greets visitors as they enter the building. A receptionist office now also connects to the lobby area, which holds all-new furniture and a plaque recognizing Charles and his wife, Kay. A restructuring of the academic resource center, now known as Dawson’s Den, has occurred, including a wall-wrap celebrating academic success that is clearly visible for student-athletes working in the computer lab. Additionally, tutorial rooms and computer-work stations have been upgraded in this area, which also displays pictures of the most recent ASU graduates. The names of the latest members of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll are also showcased in Dawson’s Den. The area is named after Scott and Kay Dawson, longtime supporters of Red Wolves’ athletics. Team photos have been hung and are displayed along the walls of the building, along with plaques displaying the all-time winners of the Terry Gwin and Scott and Kay Dawson Ambassador Awards, two of the highest honors and ASU student-athlete can receive. Additional renovations are still scheduled, includiing a “Wall of Honor” that will recognize special studentathletes that come to Arkansas State and excelled in their business, in their profession, in their career or in their community. 2014 Arkansas state SOCCER reference guide

Those who have not visited the campus of Arkansas State University in the last five or 10 years would be shocked at the school’s appearance today. So much on campus is tied to athletics. Centennial Bank Stadium is the gathering site for Saturdays and excitement surrounding each game can be felt for miles. The sights, the smells, the sounds of football. There is so much construction and new projects on campus. The school looks . . . and is . . . a modern educational institution that has kept up with technology and student needs as much, if not more, than most schools in the nation. A student center addition anchors the campus, and a new student recreation and wellness center was completed last fall. New campus housing has recently been completed, including a “Collegiate Park” apartment complex, coastal-type soft-colored housing throughout campus, and a new dorm. There is a new Alumni Center and construction of a new overpass connecting the campus to local businesses is about to become a reality. It’s a new-look campus that is growing and improving each day. Arkansas State University is an extremely valuable part of Northeast Arkansas and surrounding areas.

Arkansas State University was established April 1, 1909, as a “public school of agriculture” by Act 100 of the Arkansas General Assembly. It was located at Jonesboro because citizens of the city bid $40,000 to the state and pledged 200 acres of land as a site. After a century of growth, ASU-Jonesboro now has an annual budget of some $122.6 million, owns more than 3,000 acres of land in five different counties, has a physical plant valued at almost $200 million, and has an alumni roll exceeding 53,000. A-State’s rapid development over the years has been typical of other major universities in an emerging modern South. From an agricultural high school in 1909, to a junior college in 1918, to a four-year degree-granting institution in 1930, to a university in 1967, ASU has become regionally respected and nationally recognized for its qualities of teaching, research and service. The A-State’s system includes campuses at Beebe (White County), Mountain Home (Baxter County), and Newport (Jackson County) where associate degree programs are offered, and at Marked Tree, Searcy and Heber Springs. An instructional site is located at Paragould. The Jonesboro campus, which occupies 942 acres amid the gentle slopes of Crowley’s Ridge in east Jonesboro, is located between the vast and fertile Mississippi River Valley and the cultural and scenic richness of the Ozark Mountains. More than 10,000 students annually work toward degrees in 141 areas of specialization at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Fifteen undergraduate degrees are offered through the Colleges of Agriculture, Business, Communications, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Nursing and Health Professions, Sciences and Mathematics, and the University College. The Honors College was instituted July 1, 2004, evolving from the Honors Program.

TABLE Terry OFMohajir CONTENTS

Terry Mohajir is in his first year as the Arkansas State Director of Athletics. He became the 11th Director of Athletics in A-State history on September 19, 2012. An Arkansas State University alumnus, Mohajir's (pronounced MO-HA-JUR) career path went through three other NCAA Division I institutions, including the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Florida Atlantic and Kansas, before leading him back to his alma mater. "I'm thrilled and honored to serve as the Director of Athletics at Arkansas State University," said Mohajir. "I'm very eager to join the university leadership and help take advantage of the amazing momentum that has been created. As an alumnus, and former student-athlete, I'm excited to have the opportunity to guide this athletics department toward making a national impact as part of this emerging university." Mohajir's wealth of experience, history of success working with a university in A-State’s current conference and his noted accomplishments at a BCS automatic qualifying school made him a clear choice to take over the reins at Arkansas State. "Over the past month I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to a number of highly qualified individuals from California to the Carolinas who were either interested in becoming the Athletic Director at AState or were recommending someone for the job -- a clear indication that we are on the radar screen nationally," A-State Chancellor Dr. Tim Hudson said. "During that time as we filtered through the input, it became clear that in Terry we had a unique opportunity to bring back a committed alum with the vision, energy, experience and persona to lead Red Wolves athletics during this exciting era." Mohajir has gained national respect in collegiate athletics while working with some of the finest administrators and coaches in the country, such as former FAU, Louisville, Miami and Oklahoma head football coach Howard Schnellenberger. "Arkansas State University is very lucky to get a talented and creative administrator in Terry Mohajir," said Schnellenberger. "I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. I know he will help take Arkansas State to the next level. I wish him and the program all my best." The Overland Park, Kansas native has been involved with major fundraising campaigns at multiple universities, while also overseeing corporate sales, marketing promotions and ticket sales. He most recently served the last 13 months as Kansas' Senior Associate Director

of Athletics and Chief Marketing Officer. Prior to his time with the Jayhawks, he spent a seven-year stint as Florida Atlantic's Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Relations from 2004-11 after working at UMKC from 1997-2004 as its Assistant Director of Athletics for External Relations. "I am extremely excited about Terry Mohajir leading our athletics department into the future," said A-State System President Dr. Chuck Welch. "While we had a significant number of highly qualified and experienced candidates who expressed interest in the position, Terry stood out because of his energy, enthusiasm, presence, and passion for growing our programs. The fact that he has experience in the Big 12 Conference, as well as the Sun Belt Conference, provides Terry with a very diverse background perfectly suited for our situation. When asked why he was interested he simply said, 'This is my alma mater, and this is the perfect time to do special things at A-State.' Terry is the perfect fit at the right time. I have never been more excited about our future." Mohajir worked at Kansas in a variety of capacities during two different stints, but his latest stop in Lawrence saw him assume responsibility for the Williams Education Fund that totaled over $22 million in revenue for the fiscal year 2012. He supervised the athletics department's areas that generated over $40 million in revenue. In addition, Mohajir oversaw Kansas' multimedia rights partnership for IMG. His most recent role was heavily focused on the market strategies for the proposed football stadium renovations. "Terry's experience at KU, where the basketball program is legendary, and his obvious background in football and fundraising make him a terrific choice," said A-State Head Men's Basketball Coach John Brady. "Plus, he played here. He clearly knows A-State." Mohajir went to Kansas from his position at Florida Atlantic, where he oversaw development, marketing, ticket sales, corporate sales and the media relations department. Foremost among his responsibilities was a fundraising campaign for a $70 million on-campus football stadium. His astute project management helped the Owls' football program reach the 2007 New Orleans Bowl in just its fourth year as an FBS program, an NCAA record for the fastest start-up program to go to a bowl game. During his tenure, FAU's athletics department enhanced its major gift program 800 percent, Owl Club giving increased 400 percent and special-events revenue increased 150 percent. Mohajir's original connection to KU dated back to the early 1990's, when he was a graduate assistant and later an assistant offensive line and game-day special team's football coach for the Jayhawks (199396). He left Kansas in 1997 but didn't go far, staying in the Kansas City area to take over his administrative position with the newly-created Division I UMKC Athletics program. There he supervised marketing and promotions, sports information, fundraising, radio and TV contracts, corporate sales, tickets, event operations, sports medicine, strength and conditioning and men's soccer. Under his leadership, the Kangaroos saw dramatic increases in endowment, sponsorships, ticket revenue and its donor base. One of his more visible accomplishments at UMKC was the fundraising and construction efforts for a new training room and strength and conditioning center. During his time as an assistant coach at Kansas, Mohajir was on the staff that beat UCLA in the 1995 Aloha Bowl and had a final ranking of No. 9 in the AP poll. He was also a football ticket sales and promotions account executive for Kansas Athletics and earned a master's degree in sports management at KU in 1997.

TABLE Facilities OF CONTENTS

A-State Soccer Arkansas State University’s athletic programs compete in top-of-the line facilities. ASU Stadium, which opened in 1974, has evolved into a beautiful stadium which seats 30,406 fans. That includes a cluster of exclusive suites in the south end zone atop the football office complex. A million dollar video/scoreboard is the focal point in the stadium. Coaches and student-athletes moved into a new $2.7 million track and field complex in spring 2004. It contains an eight-lane 400-meter track and can be set up for two NCAA venues. Three local country clubs graciously allow ASU’s men’s and women’s golf programs to utilize their facilities for practice and play. J.A. “Ike” Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field serves as home to Red Wolves baseball. Built in 1993, the stadium received complete lighting in 1996 and, most recently, 206 field level seats were added for the 2008 season. A-State’s newest women’s program, bowling, competes in the Jonesboro Bowling Center, a 40-lane stateof-the-art facility.

Jonesboro, Arkansas

Jonesboro, home of Arkansas State University, weighs in as the largest city in Northeast Arkansas. As a matter of fact, if you form a triangle by connecting Little Rock, St. Louis and Memphis, Jonesboro stands out as the largest metropolitan city in what amounts to a 17,000 square mile triangular area. Jonesboro is a great city of 60,000, and is always ready to welcome incoming ASU students from the moment they arrive in town. The booming community has matured over the past half century into a regional center for cultural, educational, industrial, commercial, agricultural, communication, transportation, recreational and medical interests. It contains almost every convenience of a big city and every comfort of a small town. The community is alive with cultural events such as the art exhibitions, theatrical and musical productions, not only on campus but in the city itself through the Jonesboro Fine Arts Council, NEA Foundation of Arts, the Forum and the Northeast Arkansas Symphony. One highlight is the annual Hispanic celebration when downtown Main Street is transformed into a festive explosion of Hispanic music, food and cultural activity. Jonesboro is also the medical hub of northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri, with two major hos-

pitals and countless medical professionals. The city is also a shopping mecca, offering a modern business district as well as quaint downtown antique shops and restaurants. The $100 million Mall at Turtle Creek recently opened with more than 100 stores. One of the five largest cities in Arkansas, Jonesboro is located between the vast and fertile Mississippi River and the cultural and scenic richness of the Ozark Mountains. It is nestled about 70 miles west of Memphis, Tennessee, on the gentle slopes of Crowley’s Ridge. Jonesboro is a comfortable one hour drive from Memphis, two hours from Little Rock and four hours from St. Louis. The city and University have meshed resources in recent years and have truly become the “capital” of the northeast quadrant of the state. Northeast Arkansas is a recreation haven for the person who enjoys water sports, fishing, hunting, and boating as well as the joys of unspoiled nature. Jonesboro and the surrounding area have an abundance of lakes, rivers, ponds, streams and forests to serve as nature’s playgrounds for the avid outdoors person. And, Jonesboro, ranked by Forbes.com as the 27th “best small place to live” is a nice place to call home.
