From the time your eyes start to process, you envision the world in your own way – the wonders are your own. Over time we've developed our world to be one where the most 'amateur' photographer can capture the spirit in time – a moment that means more to that sole clicker than to any other human being. Your loved ones get it, your friends 'like' it, but to you it’s that moment sat in the woods or the coves. It’s something that has purpose, not a post or a tweet, but something real. Having grown up in the 70s, I can remember the little albums of photos my parents had stashed in the attic. Things are so different today; I must have 62,000 images of first born on my computer…The places that were on your mind, a place built by moments, captured in time, one where the two arts and parts of the equation fit. In this edition we have a collection of images from different photographers that make us, hopefully, realise the moment, or recognize the art that the images possess. This may be just for art’s sake, maybe for the quality of the scenery – enjoy it, merry xmas, and take from it what you will!

Competition is good...

The Sculpture by the Lakes photographic competition, run in conjunction with Arkadia Magazine, has come to a close. With hundreds of entrants and some exceptional photographs, Maxine Walter’s photo of the sculpture ‘Tree Spirit’ has been chosen as the winner. Simon Gudgeon, British sculptor and creator of Sculpture by the Lakes, who judged the competition said: “We had such a high standard and a huge variety of entries; it was a tough decision, yet as soon as I saw Maxine’s photo I knew it was the winner. It was obvious that Maxine had studied all the elements within the frame before the picture was taken – the reflection of the light, the colour of the tree, the darkness of the leaves and the varying colour streams across the sculpture. The tree almost feels part of the sculpture – nature and art converging.” Gerald robinson

katie mitchell

Winner Maxine Walter said: “I have recently left my career in the fashion industry to take on my passion, photography, full time. When I heard I had won the competition, I was ecstatic. I have been a visitor to Sculpture by the Lakes for a few years now and have a particular empathy towards Simon’s bronze figurative work especially ‘Sylph’, ‘Search for Enlightenment’ and ‘Tree Spirit’. I took the photo in early September and for me I feel the warmth of the bronze, the light and the tree behind, all produce a dramatic photo that is simple in colour yet striking in impact.” The competition offered the winner £1,000 in prize money and was open to anyone who took a photograph at Sculpture by the Lakes during 2015. The photo itself could have had any subject matter: sculptures, flora, fauna, landscape or anything that inspired the photographer. arkadia magazine Sculpture by the Lakes offers visitors 26 acres of beautiful Dorset countryside interspersed with British sculptor Simon Gudgeon’s sculptures, making it as much a destination for garden and nature lovers as it is for art enthusiasts.

I struggled to know what to write here as I cannot talk about art school and the subsequent dream of success. I started painting when I was 30, through the influence of my partner’s sister who is an artist, and when brush hit the canvas, that was it. So, from my shed, next to the tumble drier in the dead of night (I have three small children and a job as a cook, so painting in the daytime – no chance!) I was hooked and wanted to learn more to the point of obsession. I never stopped painting; painting over old paintings if I had no canvases. I would think that by the time I am actually happy with a finished painting, there are probably about five previous pictures underneath! My influences range from Caravaggio, to my children’s drawings, which I have used in quite a few of my paintings. I also incorporate aspects of street art, graffiti and portraiture into my work.

I love to see people enjoying my work; it brings me a huge joy.

I amassed many paintings in my shed and all round my house before being encouraged (and by that I mean forced) to put my work in exhibitions and galleries. I find it really hard to sell my work and never think that it is good enough. Fortunately for me, I am surrounded by people who believe that my work is good enough to be exhibited – those who, like Arkadia Magazine, want folk to see it, and people who believe in it enough to put it in their galleries. It amazes me still that people want my art on their walls.

My partner’s sister (Lisa – thank you!) encouraged me to put work forward in an exhibition promoting mental health, Felix (Art Asylum Weymouth) let me spray paint everywhere and believed that my work would sell, and Athena at Gaf Gallery gave me a prime spot when she opened her gallery in Westbourne, Bournemouth. I am always humbled with the positivity and encouragement from everyone, and still overwhelmed that people buy my work. To see more of my work, please take a day trip to one of the galleries mentioned or go to facebook.com/streeturchinwasteland

How did it all begin? Has this been an ambition to paint since you were a young girl? It came from three very amazing sources: my mum, dad and my uncle Karl. Both men were fantastic artists, but neither of them had the best start in life and certainly were never encouraged to pursue art. Regardless, Uncle Karl did, and found work as a cartoonist. Visits were brilliant. He always brought a copy of Whizzer and Chips. We would pore over the drawings rather than the narrative. I'd then watch transfixed as he conjured up chiaroscuro (he taught me that word – love it). I thought it was magical. By 40, he was going blind and tragically died of meningitis. To me, he is still the best artist that has ever lived. Dad sadly, much to Mum's frustration, never mustered the confidence to do art. Instead he bestowed all belief and encouragement on me. The house was filled with second hand art books, featuring everyone from De Vinci to Warhol. I became arkadia magazine

You live in Weymouth, have you drawn inspiration from the area? I was born in Weymouth but have lived all over: Kent, Devon, London, Germany... I now live on Portland. I'm in love, big time, with the local wildlife. I celebrated it with my exhibition 'Whilst Out With Dog'. This collection contains the infamous 'Dave the Mackerel' painting. I'm sometimes referred to as 'The Mackerel Lady' but I don't care, he was selected to be hung in the Mall Gallery, London, by the Royal Academy of Marine Artists. He did good. Faces and the stories they tell interest me the most so inspiration can come from anywhere. My next collection features people that are mostly local but also from Brighton, London, Wales – all over. Watch this space. What is your favourite spot in your Town?

Knowing I suffered from the same confidence issues as dad, she left me a note. It read, 'Do your art!' obsessed, spending hours studying the images. He died last year. Without him I wouldn’t be doing this amazing, privileged job. Mum also played her part; she was embarrassingly proud. Every Saturday she would buy me a new 10p drawing pad. She died when I was 23. Knowing I suffered from the same confidence issues as Dad, she left me a note. It read: 'Do your art!' Were you naturally gifted at art, or is this something you've learnt? I don't know if I believe in being 'naturally talented'. Art is not attainable just for a chosen few. Anyone can learn and improve. My advantage is that it's my passion. I'll always be in awe of other artists. A wave of electricity washes over me when I see something impressive. I want to know how it's done. I just want to keep learning forever.

Predictable answer but top of Portland looking over Chesil or the Fleet Lagoon. Breath-taking. We are so lucky. Where can we see your work? The Jackson Gallery, Portland; Lazy Hill Gallery, Abbotsbury; Gallery on the Square, Poundbury; The Cove Gallery, Weymouth Harbour and stacked up very untidily against a wall in my studio. Private commissions have been sent as far as The Congo (honest) and Australia.

What are you expecting to see from Santa? Anything you’ve got your heart set on? I'm not expecting anything from Santa, he's a lazy git who does nothing and gets all the credit. I have my heart set on a little Christmas pixie turning up. He will complete all of my pet portraits and sort out the shopping, decoration, gifts, food, wrapping and stress levels. Failing that, a cuddle with my brilliant husband, watching the kids unwrap their presents whilst clutching a big glass of Baileys will do.

drifting along

I have been working with driftwood and reclaimed wood for roughly 12 years but before that I had always made things, just one-offs for myself or those close to me. I am inspired by the wonderful coastline around the British Isles and of course our amazing Jurassic Coast. I beachcomb regularly here in Dorset, and when in Cornwall bring back some wonderful pieces from there too. I am lucky enough to be able to recycle wood from local timber, and use the Dorset based company Farrow and Ball for paint. I love to try to keep my work as focused as possible on the beautiful parts of our county. arkadia magazine

Inspiration comes easy to me as we live in the most amazing place and, growing up around the beaches and sailing on the waters around here, it only seems natural to me to try and recreate little worlds that involve the sea. I am so passionate about the quirky, beautiful harbour homes that are around our coastline. People can buy my work through shows that I exhibit at, through contacting me direct and by checking out what I currently have for sale on my Facebook site. Also my work is available to view and purchase at Sladers Yard down in West Bay, and soon also at the wonderful Workhouse Chapel in Sturminster Newton. Within the next few weeks I hope to have my new website up-and-running which is so exciting. arkadia magazine

I’ve been many things in my life, A Stonemason; Draughtsman; CAD Designer; Lecturer; Company Director. Although these occupations fulfilled my love of technical precision, none satisfied my in built desire to create. As a young man I dabbled in photography and began to feel the beginnings of a passion, an outlet for my need to master technical discipline and the freedom to be creative. Five years ago I felt it had become more than just a pastime and I set about trying to settle on a genre. Landscape, Studio, Macro, etc. I loved them all and began to achieve some sales and recognition from people that count. This success was enough to push me to give up 9-5 employment and launch myself into the uncertain World of Professional Photography. Landscape was the most obvious starting point, so I relocated back to my Dorset homeland, Portland and began to gather a body of work. I secured a few local outlets and began to sell! Still looking for a niche, when the weather prevented landscape work, I continued to explore the more creative side of the photographic art. On a rainy December evening, I was selling my wares in the foyer of Tesco’s, when I was approached by a chap regarding the opening of an art Gallery. Felix had a vision for a commission free gallery called the Art Asylum in Brewers Quay. Felix’s mission was to provide a gallery for artists to rent affordable priced wall spaces in order to give them exposure and sell at reasonable prices. I was the first artist on-board and have been an ‘inmate’ ever since; it’s now in its third year. I have recently become a ‘Doctor’ at Art Asylum and as a partner to Felix; we’ve secured a huge space in Brewers Quay, with unique exhibition space and an amazing photography studio with spaces to rent at affordable rates. I’ve also matured as a photography artist and I’m currently working on ‘Be Part of The Art’. Some of that work is shown here, these are commissioned images of everyday people, who really are ‘Part of the Art’ they hang on their wall. I've just been awarded highly commended, as one of 9 artists, chosen to promote the United Nations in their Global Goals campaign, well chuffed, as you can imagine.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is Classic FM’s Orchestra in the South of England and their exciting concert season at the Pavilion features some of the world’s greatest classical music. The BSO will be joined by a host of fantastic artists including Chief Conductor Kirill Karabits who has just confirmed that he will remain at the helm until 2018 and beyond. Violinists Tasmin Little, Yossif Ivanov and Chloë Hanslip will be performing three of the most loved concertos by Tchaikovsky, Bruch and Mendelssohn and other highlights include performances of Ravel’s Bolero, Grieg’s Piano Concerto, the return of the BSO’s fabulous New Year Viennese Gala and a special concert celebrating the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II on St George’s Day – a very special occasion. The Pavilion has been home to symphonic concerts since its opening in 1929 when the old Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra (as the BSO was then called) vacated its glasshouse home at the original Winter Gardens and moved into the glamourous splendour of the brand new complex of theatre and ballroom, bars and restaurants. Sir Dan Godfrey would conduct numerous times, several of which were filmed by British Pathé, a number of which can be found on YouTube. A memorable occasion was that of the Orchestra’s fortieth anniversary concert on May 21st 1933 which was broadcast live by the BBC across the nation. In his closing speech Sir Dan blatantly commended all the “wireless listeners who had enjoyed the concert to come to Bournemouth for their holidays!” This was almost certainly the first and only broadcast advert heard by British radio listeners until the advent of commercial stations in Normandy and Luxembourg. We will never know if Sir Dan knew that he was contravening the BBC licence which forbade any form of publicity! With a new acoustic shell the Pavilion remains a great place to hear the BSO and the power and exhilaration of a live symphony orchestra in full flow. As the orchestra of the South and South West, the world-class BSO also has underpinning residencies in Poole, Exeter, Bristol and Portsmouth which forms part of their unique 10,000 square-mile remit.

A selection box of shows from Artsreach this Christmas! Dorset’s rural touring arts organisation Artsreach will round off their 25th Anniversary year by bringing a real selection box of yet more outstanding live professional performances to rural venues in the County this December. Bristol based duo Living Spit first burst on to the Artsreach programme in 2013 with their hilarious show ‘The Six Wives of Henry V111’. After successfully selling out at no less than six venues across the County, the pair have been in high demand with subsequent tours of ‘Elizabeth 1: Virgin on the Ridiculous’, and their special pub show ‘One Man & His Cow’. Now this Christmas, in keeping with the festive spirit, Howard and Stu are back with their madcap adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’… Hard-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge hates the season of goodwill until a visit from three Phantoms one memorable Christmas Eve makes him rethink his miserly ways blah blah blah. We all know the story, we’ve all seen the films; but who’s the best Scrooge of all time? Albert Finney? Alistair Sim? Patrick Stewart? Well, just hold your horses there, because you’ve yet to witness the actor Howard Coggins’s unique take on the eponymous anti-hero of Dickens’ festive masterpiece. Coggins takes up the mantle to give the performance of his career as the mean miserabilist, Ebenezer Scrooge, and he’s brought Stu Mcloughlin along for the ride to dress up, sing, dance and generally act like a complete idiot. With silly songs, pitiful puppetry and more Dickensian daftness than you can shake a candy cane at, expect a feast of festive foolery that you will never forget. See it in premiere in Dorset from the 2-6 December. For music lovers, the intoxicating and infectious sound of the Moscow Drug Club arrives in Dorset in December. The band formed by accident when North American chanteuse Katya Gorrie and International guitar virtuoso Denny Ilett stumbled into a pub and met a Django guitarist named Dave Archer. Finding that they each had a passion for 30s and 40s swing music, and the Parisian songwriters of the 50s, an idea began to form in their minds.

Teaming up with classical violinist John Pearce and double bassist Andy Crowdy, the five-piece was soon complete and the band have never looked back. Combining original material with songs by the likes of Jacques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Bertolt Brecht and Duke Ellington, Moscow Drug Club have wowed crowds across the UK, performing at venues and festivals including Womad, Larmer Tree, Marlborough Jazz festival and the Royal Albert Hall. Catch them live from the 11-13 December.

The Great Exhibition of Boscombe hailed a great success

O

rganisers of the Great Exhibition of Boscombe are delighted with how well this year’s festival has been received with several events selling out and most reaching near capacity audiences.

At Arkadia Towers we were kindly asked to become a media partner for this fabulous new exhibition of Dorset’s finest artists, in all formats. Boscombe came alive with rooftop cinemas, art trails, hip hop, graffiti and so much more. People flocked to this unique seaside suburb of Bournemouth to enjoy a free and varied programme of fascinating pop-ups, interactive art installations, workshops and live performances. Project manager Clare Belmont said: “Boscombe is at the heart of Dorset’s thriving creative industry with a hotbed of emerging artists, and the Great Exhibition of Boscombe provides a platform from which to showcase their talents, whilst highlighting Boscombe’s evolving creative culture.’’ Clare continued: “This year’s exhibition has been jam-packed with international and local artists including our ‘On the Roof’ hip hop takeover with B-Line Recordings legendary dance crew members of ‘Second to None’ to inspire our young local dancers and share the message of real hip hop culture. Award-winning artist Mark Lloyd featured in the fine art event with never-before-exhibited work and our sold out roof top cinema saw a Bournemouth University collaboration screening of BFX competition winners’ work as well as popular animated films for the whole family to enjoy.

Funding for this year’s Great Exhibition of Boscombe came from the Arts Council England and Adam Gent, Relationship Manager, Combined Arts, Arts Council England, said: “We are very pleased to support The Great Exhibition of Boscombe which brings great art to the high street for the whole community. The mix of professional and young emerging artists, local heritage and opportunities to get involved will continue to raise the profile of Boscombe and the talent it nurtures and attracts.”

Where everybody knows your name. From an early age, I grew up watching my father and his friends going to the pub, I then grew up, with 3 or 4 in the local area I could class as my 'gaff', my little slice of 'home from home', It's a rare feat in this part of the World to have that... yes there are pubs, but there not real are they, there old furniture shops and pet stores that have given way to the 'yufe' culture, The Compasses Damerham, a real pub, yet with unreal cuisine, we have Simon, a fabulous host, Mariana an amazing chef, and an incredible vibe... An amazing example of the reason pubs were invented, with a pool table, dartboard, proper top quality ales, gins and wines, incredible food, and two scruffy puppies slowly melting by the big well-kept log burner that sits proudly by the bar, keeping many a weary New Forest traveller warm, as I sit soaking up the atmosphere, I feel like the same man growing up in the Inn's and Taverns of Leicestershire, now time to eat from this amazing Christmas menu, I've had the scallops, the beef and the soufflé from the Christmas menu and I immediately ask if they were open for the Christmas day affair (the first time I’ve ever done this) but no; even chilled landlords need one day off a year... Boxing Day it is then!! Their Head Chef is ex Romanian TV chef, Marianna, who is perfectly in sync with her team, having worked in Bath, Whitby and Bristol. Combine her woman’s touch with her up-bringing and sense of style and you have a real recipe for success – all at pub prices! The pak choi with the Parma ham wrapped seared scallops is a real hit, as is the superb beef. Oh, and the dessert is an absolute killer. The wine flowed and the company in both bar and dining room kept the vibe chilled – what a great day to be a food lover... ahem,.. critic!

Cool Campers 07979 726 763 I have run a few pieces into the magazine regarding places I have come across on my travels around Dorset, and this is one of those spots that just amazed me. As I draw up the quiet county lane, turning the corner I am in what can only be described as a utopia of VW history. From the old splits to the type 1 bays, through to my love, T25s, all surrounded by regalia from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. What an incredible place to work – I want one!

A Vanishing act... With the help of photographer Kris Dutson, we discover hidden beauty in the heart of Dorset arkadia magazine

It would seem that having spoken to the three units that work from this site, privacy and the essence of surprise is something they aim to achieve. As cool campers go, they are by far the coolest in Dorset, from the initial mechanics from Adie in the middle unit, to the full-on restoration in the end unit, and the beautification of the interiors of your beloved van at the opposite end. ‘Totally Trimmed’ is the workplace of Katie, the wife of Gary at t’other end of the shop. With a background in accounting, this is one woman who has finally found her vocation. Along with husband Gary, they were wondering how to make this a true enterprise and, with a passion for vans (Katie’s is the cool Cali sunburnt van in the piccies), the dream of having her own business in the industry is now alive. And what a success these guys have made of it. Twelve years in the making,

this is one of the highest (low) profile van specialists in the UK. We could go on and on about the place, with vintage pumps and cola signs sourced from favelas in the Mexican regions. These areas that they visit are so poor that the locals think nothing of replacing the walls of the homes and selling the old vintage signs on. They even throw cables over the power lines to draw down electricity to the shacks! Can you imagine?

Gary has been driving VWs from an early age, and as a pro surfer and moto-x rider, all of his gear was always stashed away in a van. After buying one for spares and selling them for more than the van was worth, a vision was formed, and ‘Cool Campers’ was born. Now selling vans anywhere from 40K to 220K, the scene has been created, the place is alive, and the future looks bright‌ if a little green.

THE QUAY TO A GOOD NIGHT OUT. Set in the old world of Poole Quay, this delightful bar and restaurant sits as a beacon for the cool nightlife currently found on this stretch of seaside tranquillity. Overlooking the water and the amazing views of Brownsea and the hive of activity from the local boatyards, Custom House is a much loved piece of Poole Harbour’s heritage. Built in 1813, its graceful double staircase provides an everyday Georgian grandeur for all to enjoy. With a love of good food and celebrating its British heritage, we specialise in seafood and British beef (although you will find something delicious for all tastes on our menu). Custom House has recently partnered with award-winning local design company Woadden Nash and local artist Kathryn Thomas (as featured on Harbour Lives), to create an exciting new look for the Custom House lounge bar. Here you’ll find a new range of bespoke cocktails, and a relaxed dining menu focusing on house specialities – steak and mussels. For a full dining experience come to our upstairs dining room, set in the old Long Room of the Custom House where the main public business was transacted. Whilst you enjoy your food, don’t forget to look outside the window to see the historic King's Beam below, where goods were weighed to charge the King's customs.

At the time of its building, Poole was a major port for trade to Newfoundland and the Custom House formed an essential part of quayside life. Whilst drinking your CH coffee or tea, remember to appreciate the history of these precious commodities. A coffee house used to be on this site and imported tea was an important and lucrative trade. Famously, two tons of contraband tea that had been recovered from smugglers and stored at Custom House was stolen by the Hawkhurst Gang in a major theft of its day.

Please contact us on 01202 676767 or using our booking form for enquiries. Book early to get the dates and times you want. As ever we can tailor any event to your requirments Christmas at Custom House, Poole Quay, is very special and the perfect place to come for a work Christmas party or celebrate with friends and family. The fire will be flickering as you arrive, the fireplaces will be decked with decorations, and there will be plenty of festive cheer. We have some great value Christmas menus that, as ever, combine our British heritage with modern twists. This year we've expanded our range of Christmas party options. Try our Wine Tasting Christmas evening or Christmas Friday Party DJ Nights for something different. The Attic: Our lovely private dining room, the Attic, is ideal for staff work parties or groups between 15 and 30 who would like a private party. It has wonderful water views in an intimate beamed room, beautifully decorated for Christmas. We offer the same menu, along with dedicated service. New Year’s Eve: On New Year’s Eve we have a fixed menu @ £47.50, which starts with Champagne and canapes on arrival, and continues with a festive feast! A special, refined way to spend New Year’s Eve with family and friends. Or try something different... Cocktail Making: Test and hone your cocktail skills this Christmas for some festive fun. Make (and drink!) 2 cocktails with our lovely barman Rob. £12.50 for 2 cocktails. Max group of 10. Available Tues/Wed/ Thurs. Whiskey Tasting: Tuesday 1st December at Custom House, Poole, with Hampshire wine school tutor Kevin Wilson. Held in the Attic, this is sure to be a great way to start Advent! arkadia magazine www.customhouse.co.uk - email - info@customhouse.co.uk

Popstar to Opera star to Stage superstar Winner of X Factor Joe McElderry is a busy man. Since winning the show in 2009, beating off fierce competition from the likes of Olly Murs and Stacey Solomon, he then soared to number one on the UK Singles Charts with his rendition of Miley Cyrus’ The Climb. His debut album Wide Awake then went straight in at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart, followed by two more top ten albums. We ask intrepid reporter Alix King to find out more! arkadia magazine

As well as being the first X Factor star to release four albums, he is also the first celebrity to win three reality TV shows, including Channel 4’s The Jump and of course ITV’s Popstar to Operastar. Joe is currently touring the UK with his show, Evolution, which comes to Lighthouse in Poole on November 13th this year. We caught up with him in the few days between Tommy finishing at Blackpool and kicking off the second half of the tour... You kicked off the tour in Feb, which then rounds off in your home town of South Shields, has this been a fun year so far and have you enjoyed yourself? Yes – it’s been one of the busiest years of performing! We finished the tour in July, I had about three weeks off and then I started Tommy in Blackpool (The Who’s stage show) that finished at the end of September. Then it’s back out on tour beginning 1st October right up until Christmas! So you haven’t had much time off? No, probably about four weeks since February. But I like being busy – I get bored easily! And it’s nice to step out of the whole promotional world and be out performing, to be out on tour and performing to a new audience every night is just fantastic. You’ve travelled all over the UK for the tour. Have you been to Poole before? No I’ve been to Bournemouth a few times for gigs and performances, but never Poole. I’m really looking forward to it. The great thing about touring is I get to go to places I have never been before, as well as places I have never even heard of! I think I’ve been to every corner of the UK now. Do you have a favourite town that you have visited? Well, the great thing is that every town is different. I like not knowing what each audience will bring. You spend so much time in rehearsal planning song choice, choosing the order and songs the audience will prefer, but I have now realised that it’s almost always the opposite of what you think – the audience will like what you thought they wouldn’t, and hate what you thought would be the favourites! You never know what to expect Are you ever surprised at the age range of your fan base that watch your tour? You know what, my audience differs so much. You can look out and there will be seven-year-old girls with their parents, there can be a hen party of thirty-year-olds, middle-aged women, gay couples – I expect anything! I love that there’s a real mix of people and ages. You are used to performing now, with X Factor, Popstar to Operastar, Tommy... but when you go out on stage, do you still get the same buzz from performing live? Absolutely – 100%. I think if you didn’t, you couldn’t do that many shows in a row. It’s very rare that performers go out on tour for as long as I have, but I enjoy it so much. I know others find it very tiring, but I love the hustle and bustle of getting up every morning and going to somewhere new, getting into the routine of sound checking, I don’t know – maybe I’m weird! Do you still get nervous? Not like I used to. I’ll be nervous doing my first show (Lichfield) because I haven’t done it for a while – and it’s completely different as I’ve been playing a character for the past five weeks (In Tommy) and now I’m back to being myself. It’s a bit easier being hidden behind a character but now it’s back to being me! You’re very good at interacting with your audience. Will we see that in the tour? Well I do try to make my show all about talking to the audience. I feel that they deserve it. I want them to feel like they’re a part of the show and not just spectators. We have a lot of audience participation in the tour, with a section called ‘Jukebox Joe’. We turn all the lights on in the venue so everyone can see clearly, ask the members of the audience to put their hands up to request a song of their choice for us to perform. The audience absolutely love it! Can we expect a mix of original songs as well as covers in the show? Yes, it’s called The Evolution tour for that very reason – it’s songs from all four albums, a mix of pop, classical, covers - it’s a real mix. The songs we have performed before are now a bit different, as we have changed the arrangement slightly. Everything has a different feel to it. There is a version of The Climb that is great - still the same song with a newer feel to it. But of course your dedicated fans still want to hear your first hit single! Yes of course, which is really lovely and a big reason why we decided to change it up a bit, to modernise it – I have sung the single for so long, now the fans get to hear something different! Are there plans for another album after the tour? Well, I finish the tour up in Newcastle will some Christmas shows, then I go straight into pantomime (Joe is playing The Man in the Mirror in Snow White at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford) and then I start Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat in February – so I will be trying my best to fit in album work in between all my projects! Finally, Joseph’s amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – what an absolutely perfect part for you! The scores by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber are perfect for your voice, but very different from pop... Yes, absolutely – I am really honoured to be part of such an established musical. It is so different from pop, but a lot of the music is quite similar to some of the ballads that I sing on my albums, so am really looking forward to it! Thank you for speaking with us Joe, we look forward to the show in November. Arkadia wish you great success for the future and good luck with rest of the tour! KEEP 'ELFY' THIS CHRIMBO! YULE KEEP ON TRACK WITH TIPS AND ADVICE FROM NEW KID ON THE BLOCK 'LUCYLOVES.. Lucy York, a 30-something year-old personal trainer and nutrition coach, has lived and worked in Dorset all her life. Having competed at county level with her swimming and athletics as a sprinter, it was no surprise when Lucy ventured into the fitness industry. Having grown up with both parents running a successful fitness business, ‘Top To Toe’, providing fitness classes and weekend breaks in the ‘90s, Lucy has learnt from some of the best in the industry to provide a service led approach to improving her clients’ health and fitness. Hi, I’m Lucy. Thank you for taking the time to read this, the first of many Arkadia health and fitness articles.

WHEN SOMEONE SAYS 'I FORGOT TO EAT' I THINK 'YOU MUST BE A SPECIAL KIND OF STUPID...' I PLAN MY WHOLE DAY AROUND FOOD!!

LucyLoves is my business name and it is exactly that, everything I love. I am passionate about helping others achieve their goals and, sometimes, identifying what those goals are in the first place. Whether it be fat loss, muscle gain, an increase in energy or improving sports performance, I work closely with my clients to ensure they have the best nutrition, hydration, training programme and rest, to achieve their goals. In this issue I am providing tips on how to stay on track over the festive period. I often chat with clients who write off the month of December due to Christmas, but wait a minute, hold the mince pie! Is Christmas not the 25th December? Like, one day of the month? Not 31 days, right? You can still enjoy Christmas without undoing all your hard work or, indeed, delaying making a start to improving your health and fitness. Please don’t wait for January 1st to start working on you. We get one body to live in, so let’s treat it that way.

Party time – ‘tis the season With only a matter of weeks until Christmas, our diaries are getting busier with parties, events and coffee catch-ups with friends. It can soon become the norm to be tucking into mince pies by mid-morning and alcohol with lunch. “Oh well, it is Christmas after all,” we cry. So, how can we keep in great shape over the next few weeks? We don’t want to undo all that hard work over the summer just because we can cover up now with tights, big knits and lots of layers.

Socialising Now, I’m certainly not saying become a recluse – quite the opposite – it’s great to socialise and I love to meet new people, it’s one of my favourite pastimes. However, the diary soon gets busy for December, with a night out here and there, and before you know it, three nights out on the trot this week (and we’ve not even opened the advent calendar yet). Plan ahead. What ‘me time’ have you put aside? Gauge how many late nights you could encounter and whether you can cope with your other commitments, work and life, around these sleep deprived days. Your sleep is essential all year round whether you are an athlete or someone looking to lose a few inches, and you can’t simply have a longer night’s sleep to catch up. Your body needs between 6-8 quality hours of sleep per night to recover and repair itself. So, take those ZZZs seriously!

Eating out Again, there is nothing to stop you from eating out and you can stay on track without having to order “a bowl of leaves with no dressing please.” Yawn! If you’re eating out in the evening, ensure you still eat well during the day. Starving yourself pre eating out will only lead you to demolish the bread basket before smashing your way through the three courses you didn’t need to have. It’s lovely to be cooked for, and even better when you don’t have to wash up, but just think; would I have eaten three courses at home? Nope. So, opt for your first choice main and enjoy. Where you can, make smart swaps like sweet potato or new instead of fries, dressing served on the side so you can decide whether you want the additional calories or not, and remember that grilled options of fish or meat over fried will digest that bit easier.

Drinks Try to limit alcohol with your meals. Remember it puts the breaks on fat burning so, depending on your goals for health and fitness, large amounts of alcohol will stall your progress. However, ‘tis the season to be jolly, so try alternating your drinks with water and ensure you have drunk sufficient water during the day of your night out, so you are well hydrated to begin with. Alcohol will dehydrate your body and increase your appetite which is why we often then crave carbohydrates, high fat and high sugar type foods late in the evening… Kebab anyone?

Exercise Gyms tend to quieten down in the run up to Christmas, which is music to a regular gym-goer’s earphones, yet disastrous for the leisure industry. I find that many make excuses for a lack of time – so much in the diary during this time – and classes and PT sessions are the first thing to be sacrificed. But wait, hold the changing room door, 24 hour gyms! No way! This is surely something from the future! We have several gyms across Dorset offering later opening hours and some open all around the clock, providing us with the flexibility to get that all-important workout into our week. And if gyms aren’t for you, LucyLoves specialises in High Intensity Interval Training, also known as HIIT, which is designed to suit the time constrained and easily distracted as a quick way to work out your entire body and get a great fat burn as a result. Home workouts and using the great outdoors, for which we are spoilt in Dorset, is also something that LucyLoves is passionate about, making getting fit and staying fit as easy and as fun as possible. Fun and Easy = we can stick to this through the Festive period. Right? Don’t wait for the New Year for a New You, stay on track this year and remember that your nutrition, hydration, rest and exercise are your four key components to consider. For further tips on getting into, and staying in, the best shape of your life, for life, contact LucyLoves. To take advantage of your own FREE wellness evaluation and sports nutrition review, send us in your health and fitness questions for a feature in our next JAN-FEB 2016 issue (by 14th December at the latest please - contact info@ arkadiamags.co.uk).
