BIKE MS

THIS BIKE HAS MS Thanks to the tenacity of our MS Ambassador Wendie Marlais, “This Bike Has MS” made its US debut in Arizona. Upon seeing a short video online (www.thisbikehasms.com), Wendie knew the bike would be a fantastic way to demonstrate what it is like to live with multiple sclerosis. The MS Bike brings to life the invisible symptoms of the disease so that those without MS can experience what it is like to live with it. Australia-based company Grey Group created the bike to promote the 10th annual MS Ride in Melbourne this past March and loaned it to Wendie to help create awareness and educate people in the US about this hidden, often misunderstood disease. As an educational tool for medical practitioners, the MS Bike is helping those who treat multiple sclerosis get closer to understanding their patients. It’s helping professionals talk about MS in a new way, making conversations

between doctors and patients more relatable. Riding the MS Bike is no easy task. In fact, an Australian Olympian used the bike during a ride and had trouble finishing the route. Like living with MS, riding the bike is a real struggle – both physically and emotionally. Since arriving in Arizona, the MS Bike has been very busy, making multiple TV appearances at several local stations and attending the 30th annual Bike MS event. The bike was even

featured on stage at Rider Village during our Women Against MS Luncheon. Wherever the MS Bike goes, it’s a great tool for educating people and spreading awareness! n

10 MONEY MATTERS

TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS BY MYRA GRAY, MSW, LSW

Don’t let MS keep you from getting where you need to go, whether it’s a medical appointment, the grocery store or a dinner with friends. If you no longer drive because of MS symptoms such as vision issues or spasticity, there are other options for transportation if you know where to look.

REACH OUT The first place many people with MS look for help with transportation is their own social network. Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family members for a ride: often they are happy for a chance to help out and spend time with you. If an appointment is ongoing—a weekly visit to a physical therapist for instance—you might arrange a regular trip with a friend or family member. Sweeten the deal with an offer to pay or split the cost of gasoline, for instance, or treating the driver to a cup of coffee.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that any transportation provided to the general public must be available to people with disabilities. The ADA also requires all public transit agencies to provide paratransit services to people who cannot use fixed-route public transportation because of their disability.

MORE OPTIONS Some health insurance companies may provide transportation or cover costs of transportation to and from medical appointments. In addition, most individuals enrolled in Medicaid are eligible for transportation to and from medical care. Learn more at www.medicaid.gov.

Other opportunities to access a ride or join a carpool may exist in your community, including places of worship, community centers and service organizations. Ask your healthcare providers if they might know of other patients who drive or a carpool that can help get you to their offices.

Visit www.disability.gov/resource/disabilitygovs-guide-transportation for additional transportation resources and to learn your transportation rights as a person with a disability. The National MS Society may be able to help connect you with transportation-related resources, as well. Call an MS Navigator at 1-800-344-4867. n

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

CONGRATULATIONS, SCHOLARS! MS shouldn’t stand in the way of an education. This is why the National MS Society’s scholarship program exists — to help highly qualified students who have been diagnosed with MS, or who have a parent with MS, achieve their dreams of going to college. This year, the Arizona Chapter was able to fund five deserving students impacted by MS in our community. One of these students, Payton Cadien, received a scholarship renewal and continues her collegiate career at Creighton University. The four additional scholars include Brianna Consiglio (Northern Arizona University), Samantha Kiewel (University of Arizona), Sarah Benewith (Swathmore College) and Allison Klein (College of the Holy Cross). These high school seniors will be attending college in the fall. All five scholars provided the Society with compelling personal statements about how MS has impacted their lives, as well as their goals for the future. It is our pleasure to provide these incredible students with scholarships in order for them to achieve their dreams. We can’t wait to see what they are capable of! Information about scholarships for 2017 will be available on October 1. For more information, call 1-800-344-4867 or visit www.nationalMSsociety. org/scholarship. n

WALK MS

BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER & FUNDRAISE FOR WALK MS! The summer heat is almost upon us and what better way to welcome it than by staying indoors? Register for the 29th Annual Walk MS: Phoenix and throw a fundraiser like one of our top fundraising Walk MS teams, i > MS, has been doing for the past three years.

“As someone living with MS, I need to do whatever I can to help raise funds that one day may lead to a cure,” team captain Danielle Friedman said. It helps that she has a group of dedicated team members who are motivated and eager to support her. Diagnosed with MS in 2013, Danielle quickly became involved with Walk MS: Tucson, raising $600 in just a few weeks. “I was very excited to have friends who could relate to what I was going through,” she said. Last year was her second year as a team captain for Walk MS: Phoenix, and she had just over 100 team members who raised close

to $18,000! Much of this is due to their creative fundraisers and team participation. i > MS has hosted everything from a PJ Party to a St. Paddy’s Day pub crawl. The team has at least five summer fundraisers in the works, and some of their upcoming events include Pei Wei on June 7 in Avondale and Uptown Alley on July 20 in Surprise, where 20% of purchases will go back to the Arizona Chapter of the National MS Society. For more details on i > MS fundraisers, visit www.facebook. com/groups/mswarriorsinaz.

BIKE MS

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF BIKE MS IN ARIZONA! In 2016, we celebrated 30 years of Bike MS in Arizona, and many participants rode in the weekend long event for the first time. Rocky Shumway was one of our rookie riders this year, but now he plans on being a part of the Bike MS family for many years to come.

“One evening, Heather and I were up talking about cycling, and I decided to look up Bike MS. It sounded like a fun challenge and a way for the two of us to get emerged into the MS community, so we signed up.”

Rocky was diagnosed with MS at the age of 22. “For the first four years, I was kind of in denial,” he said. “I feel blessed that I can still be active and enjoy cycling.” Because of his love of biking, Rocky and his wife Heather decided to participate in Bike MS.

“WE HAD FRIENDS AND PEOPLE DONATE THAT WE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW OR HAD NOT TALKED TO IN YEARS. IT WAS VERY GRATIFYING!” Once registered, they each posted a video on Facebook and within a couple of weeks, they both hit their fundraising goal of $500. “We had friends donate and people that we didn’t even know or had not talked to in years. It was very gratifying!” Rocky said. After all of the training and anticipation, Rocky and Heather agree that their Bike MS weekend was one to remember. Although the last 10 miles were a challenge, the inspiring atmosphere of the weekend sticks with them both. “We went into this with the attitude that we were riding because there are a lot of others who can’t. We cannot wait for next year, and plan to come back with a team!” n

11TH ANNUAL WAMS LUNCHEON On Wednesday, April 20, the Arizona Chapter hosted the 11th annual Women Against MS Luncheon, presented by Biogen at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. Together, we raised over $10,000 with our event drawing and over $3,000 via the cake auction! More than 300 guests enjoyed a wonderful lunch and listened to the story of our keynote speaker, Wendy Booker. Wendy has tackled marathons, mountains and ice… and she’s done it all with multiple sclerosis. Diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS in 1998, Wendy did not consider herself an athlete. She did, however, know that she was not going to take her diagnosis sitting down – she wanted to fight back! Her real adventure began with a girlfriend’s invitation to run with her in the Boston Marathon. Wendy ran the marathon and never looked back. Since then, she has run twelve marathons, climbed the Seven Summits of the world – attempting Everest twice in the process, mushed to the North Pole and skied to the South Pole – setting records and breaking through barriers the entire way. If you are interested in supporting the 2017 luncheon, please contact Brandee Wessel at 480-455-3958 or email brandee.wessel@ nmss.org. n

Ocean Beach native and local sur f legend Steve Bettis was diagnosed with MS in 2006. Although sur fing is still central to his life, he hasn’t been able to get out on the water in 10 years. For a man whose daily routine always included a few waves, more than a decade out of the sur f is just too long. This is why the National MS Society teamed up with his buddy Rober t “Wingnut” Weaver and used vir tual reality to get Steve back on his wave.
