TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:6-9

W

elcome to our Men Today Issue. In honor of Father’s Day, I decree these bible verses be a source of inspiration for all dads and soon-to-be dads.

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” ~Ephesians 6:4 “Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.” ~ Psalms 127:3-5 “As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;” ~ Psalm 103:13 “For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” ~ Genesis 18:19 “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” ~ Joshua 24:15 Until next time,

“My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” ~Proverbs 3:11-12

Happy Father's Day! God Bless You! Here to serve,

“Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.” ~Proverbs 14:26

Bengal Tigers Find a Home Once numbering 100,000 or more throughout most of Asia, the world population of tigers has plummeted over the past century. Today, according to the IUCN, tigers are critically endangered having lost more than 93 percent of their home range. Total wild tiger population estimates vary around approximately 3,000, however, not all of these animals are located in regions with viable populations, suitable habitat and/or sufficient prey availability. Habitat loss and degradation, along with increased poaching, remain the biggest threats to tiger survival. Of the nine subspecies of tiger, three are confirmed extinct and another has not been seen in the wild for about 50 years, with only a handful living in zoos in Asia. Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari park is home to Bengal tigers, which are found on the Indian subcontinent. Improving the Lives of Children Through father involvement

J

ames Rodriguez, President and CEO of Fathers and Families Coalition of America was working as a Family & Community Partnership Coordinator for Head Start, when he realized that the treatment being provided for fathers was ineffective at enabling men to become better spouses and parents to their family. This motivated Rodriguez to develop Fathers and Families Coalition of America. Fathers and Families Coalition of America is a nonprofit organization that offers resources, research, technical assistance, and development to professionals and parents all over the world, to improve the lives of children who desire the best from both their mother and father. “When working with fathers, treatment professionals need to penetrate the soul of a man, where emotions, such as anger, hurt and pain of past abuse and trauma reside. Fathers need a place where they can feel safe and not guilty for exposing weakness. So many fathers are strong on the outside and broken on the inside. We live in a culture that sees exposing weakness as a flaw,” Rodriguez explains. A success story that sticks out for Rodriguez was during a counseling session with a young father who was just released from prison. “The young man showed up in his orange jumpsuit. He went through our six-week program. While working with him he told me his father never told

James Rodriguez, President & CEO of Fathers and Families Coalition of America

him he loved him. I hugged him and told him, I love you. That was powerful. Six years later I ran into him at Arizona State University. He thanked me and told me he had joined the Marine reserves and was getting his degree. This is the power of a hug, presence, and love that helps a man,” Rodriguez shares. “One way parents can raise their sons to be good fathers is to teach them not to take life so seriously. Have some fun, be respectful and be responsible. Say three keywords when you need to- ‘I am sorry.’ Give your kids security, hug and kiss them,” Rodriguez says. “Look up at all the possibilities you and your children can have, just like all the stars in heaven you can support whatever dreams you and your kids have. One of the most important things a father can impart to his child is that failure is OK. You can’t succeed without failing. It’s what you do with the mistakes you make. A father must let their child know they are loved, impart faith, affection and caring. A father should hug and love their child’s mother, to role model a strong family. A father needs to give his daughter confidence, so if she gets married she chooses a good man. To build a strong family you must advocate and fight for your children and wife. Never talk bad about your child’s parent,” Rodriguez explains.

NEVER LOSE FAITH

Dr. Mark Hong

Delivering comprehensive men’s health care

M

ark Hong, M.D. believes that every patient deserves the best treatment and personal attention possible. In addition, he has been living by that philosophy ever since he started in the medical industry, 18 years ago. “It’s not uncommon to visit a physician and experience long waits in exchange for fleeting face-time with a doctor,” Dr. Hong says. “When I graduated with my medical degree, I made it my goal to make a doctor–patient relationship the keystone of delivering the best men’s health care.” After graduating from Rice University and Stanford University School of Medicine respectively, Dr. Hong went on to receive medical credentials from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School where he completed his surgery and urology residency. During that time, Dr. Hong received several honors including, the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor (CaPSURE) national scholar and receiving several research prizes. Before finally returning to Arizona, his native home, Dr. Hong completed a robotic and minimally invasive surgery fellowship, earning him his board certification.“Receiving the best education and training possible has been critical to my success as a physician,” Dr. Hong says. “I have been fortunate to work with some of the most prestigious thought leaders in the world and perform ground breaking techniques that have been first in the Valley.”

more than 40 years. There, he continues his philosophy of personal, high-quality treatment, and care with his three other colleagues.

• First to perform “scarless” laparoscopic nephrectomy in Phoenix, by removing a kidney through a single site in the belly button.

Dr. Hong and his team continue to be leaders in innovative and minimally invasive methods to treat conditions such as benign prostatic hypertrophy, kidney stones/cancer, prostate cancer, and other men’s health issues throughout the state.

• National recognition in minimally invasive surgery by the Endourological Society. Today, his knowledge and expertise has led him to be part of Affiliated Urologists, an award winning and communitybased practice that has been providing service to patients in Scottsdale and surrounding communities in the valley for 20

“With the help of our team of physicians, I hope to continue reaching new highs in urology care, developing new technologies, and innovative ways to help patients,” Dr. Hong says. “Making men’s health treatment more accessible no matter where patients live in the valley.”

WHY ADVERTISE WITH The Right Target Audience It is the most important factor, which makes a world of difference and will move your business from market penetration, to market domination.

Results

"The ultimate reason to advertise and your choice of where to advertise is return on investment. A cheap ad campaign that produces few results ends up being an expensive ad campaign. With this in mind, we track our ROI in all advertising that we do. The AZH&L campaign by far has produced the best return on investment of any advertising vehicle we tried. And we've tried a lot." - Dr. K. Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Nutrition Network

Signs You May Have Candida Overgrowth

Y

east is well known as the leavening agent responsible for helping breads and baked goods get their fluffy texture. However, some might be surprised to learn that yeast grows in the body as well. A certain amount amount of yeast in the body is necessary, but an abundance of yeast can compromise a person's health. Candida albicans is a form of yeast that naturally occurs in the body. This fungus lives in small amounts in the mouth and the intestines. It helps with nutrient absorption and digestion. Some people produce too much candida, which can be unhealthy. The reasons behind overproduction of candida are unknown, though some medical professionals suspect it has to do with ineffective healthy bacteria in the digestive tract. Healthy bacteria in the digestive tract keeps yeast levels in check. However, certain factors can cause candida to grow out of control, particularly when a person consumes foods and beverages that feed the yeast.

Diets high in refined carbohydrates and sugar can feed yeast, possibly causing an imbalance. Consuming a lot of alcohol can also may contribute to such an imbalance, as can stress. Taking antibiotics for a bacterial infection may also kill off the friendly bacteria in the body, leading to overproduction of candida in the body. The Mayo Clinic notes that some complementary and alternative 24

An overgrowth of candida in the body can cause athlete's foot, among other conditions. practitioners blame fatigue, headache, depression, and poor memory on the overgrowth of candida, and some suggest a cleanse diet can limit the growth of candida. Yet there are no clinical trials that document the efficacy of a candida cleanse diet for treating specific medical conditions. The following are a handful of conditions that can be impacted by candida overgrowth.

Oral thrush. An overgrowth of candida can cause oral thrush. This condition causes creamy, white lesions, which usually form on the tongue or inner cheeks. It can spread to the roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils, or back of the throat. Oral thrush is not typically dangerous, but if it produces painful or itchy lesions in the mouth or spreads down the esophagus and makes swallowing difficult, prompt treatment may be necessary.

Vaginal yeast infections. The same fungus that causes oral thrush can result in vaginal yeast infections. White discharge and internal and external itching of the genital area can occur. Although a yeast infection is not dangerous,

it can be passed on to a baby during delivery and can be passed on to sexual partners.

Male yeast infections. Contrary to popular belief, men can get yeast infections, too. These may result from intimate contact with a partner who has a yeast infection. Jock itch, rashes, intestinal issues, and even loose stools can be signs of a yeast infection in men.

Athlete's foot. Candida can contribute to athlete's foot. The warm, dark environment that forms when damp feet combine with socks and shoes may cause yeast to grow unchecked. Rashes, sores and dry, patchy areas form on the soles of the feet as well as between the toes. If the skin between the toes cracks, it may cause bacteria to penetrate deeper and cause secondary infections.

Although cutting sugar and refined foods from a diet can help with candida treatment, it is unlikely dietary changes alone will cure an overgrowth problem. Anyone who suspects they have a problem with yeast should talk to a doctor. A lab culture will confirm whether yeast or other bacteria are the problem. Antifungal medications are popular treatments for candida overgrowth. Whether they come in topical creams and ointments, suppositories or pills that are taken orally, these medications will slow or eliminate the proliferation of candida. In addition, reducing moisture around the affected bodily areas can help. Consult with a doctor for more information concerning candida yeast and its symptoms. azhealthandliving.com |June 2014

Naturally Boost Testosterone Levels Getting between seven and nine hours of sleep per night may help men to combat low testosterone levels.

T

estosterone plays a vital role in men’s health. A hormone that regulates the sex organs, testosterone also affects metabolism and bone loss, and low testosterone can compromise men's health.

According to the Urology Care Foundation, roughly 20 percent of men in their 60s have low testosterone, a figure that increases to 30 percent among men in their 70s. While a gradual decline in testosterone levels is part of the aging process, low testosterone can have a negative impact on the body. Low testosterone levels increase body fat and reduce muscle mass and low testosterone can even lead to depression. Difficulty concentrating is another potential side effect of low testosterone. Men with low testosterone may also experience weakened bones, a symptom that could leave them more susceptible to osteoporosis.

While there are prescription medications designed to boost testosterone, oftentimes low testosterone levels are a byproduct of the lifestyle choices men make. That means men might be able to increase their testosterone levels naturally by making certain lifestyle changes.

Maintain a healthy weight. Men who are obese or

overweight are more susceptible to various ailments or conditions, including low testosterone. When a body is carrying excessive weight, it secretes more aromatase, an enzyme that helps convert testosterone to estrogen, a group of hormones that promote the development and maintenance of female characteristics of the body. Maintaining a healthy weight is a great way to avoid the overproduction of aromatase, which can help the body maintain adequate testosterone levels.

Make time for sleep. Poor sleeping habits affect many hormones in the male body, and testosterone is no exception. 26

Men who do not get enough sleep each night may suffer from low testosterone. According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep needs vary depending on a person's age, but research has shown that men over the age of 18 need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night to perform at their peak. Younger men whose bodies should not yet be experiencing the gradual decline of testosterone levels common to aging should examine their sleeping habits if their testosterone levels have started to decline. The solution could be as simple as getting more sleep.

Get off the couch. Men who live sedentary lifestyles

could be suffering from low testosterone because they are spending too much time on the couch. Testosterone adapts to the body's needs, so a man who is not active is unknowingly letting his body tell his brain that it does not need as much testosterone to build muscles and bones. More active men's bodies are sending a signal to the brain that the body needs more testosterone. Therefore, adopting a more active lifestyle can help men naturally restore their testosterone levels.

Work to reduce stress. Men who are overly stressed may also suffer from low testosterone. That is because the body responds to stress by producing more of the hormone cortisol. The more cortisol the body produces, the less capable it is of producing testosterone. Men who work long hours might want to cut back on their work schedules, while those whose stress comes from other sources might want to find ways to manage that stress more effectively. Low testosterone affects millions of men across the globe. While lower testosterone is often a byproduct of aging, many men could be making lifestyle choices that are negatively affecting their testosterone levels.

Natural Ways to Alleviate Anxiety

By MS

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting roughly 40 million adults age 18 and older. While many rely on prescription medication to treat their anxiety, those suffering from anxiety disorders may want to discuss natural alternatives to such medications with their physicians. The following are some natural ways to treat anxiety.

Chamomile. An ancient medicinal herb, chamomile is

experiencing a resurgence of sorts. The dried flowers of chamomile contain many terpenoids and flavonoids that increase its medicinal properties. In fact, a study at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center that examined the efficacy of chamomile at treating generalized anxiety disorder found that patients who took chamomile supplements for eight weeks experienced a significant decrease in their symptoms compared to those given a placebo. Those suffering from anxiety may want to discuss with their doctors chamomile supplements as a means to treating their anxiety.

Valerian. Used to treat insomnia, valerian is a sedative

herb that is best taken at night. Some people drink valerian tea to reduce their anxiety, but the aroma of valerian tea can be unpleasant. If that aroma is simply too pungent, valerian can be taken as a capsule or tincture. However, valerian should really only be taken at night thanks to its sedative compounds.

Exercise. Treating anxiety does not necessarily have to

involve putting something into your body. Exercise can be an effective antidote to anxiety, especially for those people whose anxiety can be traced to their concerns about their long-term health. Regular exercise improves mood and supports long-term health, and for some anxiety sufferers that is enough to alleviate their condition. azhealthandliving.com |June 2014

Men & Depression

Seven things you need to know

T

raditionally, men have been reluctant to acknowledge that they are feeling depressed, and even more unwilling to seek medical help. However, depression is not a sign of weakness—it is a medical condition.

There is a prevailing opinion in our society that depression —not feeling a bit down in the dumps, but clinical depression —is not something that should happen to men. “Real” men, the thinking goes, should be able to power through discouragement. Tough guys do not let their emotions “get the better” of them. Even if a man is having a bad day, he is certainly not supposed to cry and complain about it. If he is strong, he will eventually snap out of whatever funk he is in. If that is how you tend to think about depression, you are making a dangerous mistake. The truth is, over six million men are affected by depression each year in the U.S. alone, but many do not seek treatment because they do not want to be seen as weak or defective. Men need to understand that being diagnosed with depression isn’t a cause for stigma, and that ignoring it can have devastating consequences for them, their spouses, their kids, their careers and more. Depression is influenced by your brain biochemistry, and that is not something you naturally have control over. Depression is a medical illness that you cannot just ‘get over’ on your own, so the public perception of depression as a shameful cause for stigma must change. It may come as a surprise to hear, but depression is not technically sadness

28

June 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

—it is a loss of energy. When energy is low, you are less able to cope and less likely to do other things that are necessary for a healthy physical and emotional life. Most people do not realize it, but you can gain some control of your brain’s biochemistry if it becomes dysfunctional, which can have a huge impact on your mood and behavior. That control comes mainly through medications, but lifestyle also plays a big role, too. Here are seven things all men should know about depression.

Depression is more prevalent than ever. America is

becoming a nation of overworked, overstressed, and (often) unhappy people. More than that, though, increasing numbers of Americans are being diagnosed with depression—and that includes men. Studies show that each generation is more likely to become depressed than the one that came before it—and more likely to become so at an earlier age, too.

Men experience different symptoms from women. If

you were asked to picture depression, you would probably think of someone who is quiet, sad, apathetic, and lethargic. Those symptoms are characteristic of depression, but they are more commonly seen in women. Because most people do not realize that depression manifests differently between the sexes, many men fail to suspect the true nature of what is bothering them. Women are likely to internalize their negative feelings and blame themselves for their problems, while men more commonly act out on their emotions.

Depression manifests itself differently in men because their emotional circuits and brains are designed differently. So instead of getting tearful, a man who is depressed might become irritable, hostile, and fatigued.

There is a connection between depression and stress.

Stress is so prevalent that we tend to ignore it and write it off as normal, despite the fact that we have all heard the statistics about how chronic stress can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, and other health problems. However, did you know that long-term stress could also increase your risk of becoming depressed? While depression can be related to genetics, it can also be caused by long-term stress—especially if you are not handling it well. When you are constantly worn down, anxious, and unhappy, you are essentially training your brain to be that way—and eventually, your brain’s biochemistry becomes locked into this pattern.

Depression can damage your physical health. You

may consider depression to be a disorder that is rooted in the brain. However, that does not mean it cannot affect your body, too. Depression is accompanied by a loss of energy. It can also cause muscle pain, joint pain, digestive problems, headaches, reduced sex drive, and more—and it is easy to see how those symptoms can disrupt your life. If you are depressed, it is very possible that you will feel exhausted and in pain all of the time. It is not uncommon for patients to be misdiagnosed at first because they and their doctors think that the unpleasant symptoms have another cause. That is why it is very important to understand that depression is not just ‘in your head,’ and to be completely open with your doctor.

Depression can hurt your family. Do not make the mistake of believing that depression affects only you. If you are lacking energy or anxious, irritable, or in pain, your family will notice. Their daily lives—in fact, their basic well-being—will be impacted, too. Your spouse and children might feel that they have to walk on eggshells around you and might become anxious themselves because they cannot ease your burden. You will not be able to give them the attention, support, and love that you used to, either. Depression is treatable. Many people suffer from debilitating

depression for months or even years, and if you are one of them, you may believe that a “normal” life is—and always will be—beyond your grasp. Depression is treatable, though— and with a combination of counseling and medication, most people are able to regain their quality of life.

If you suspect that you might be suffering from depression —or even heading toward it—I promise you that talking to your doctor is the best thing you can do for your health, your family, and your future. azhealthandliving.com

CONNECT WITHIN

By Dan Waldschmidt, author of Edgy Conversations: How Ordinary People Achieve Outrageous Success

Overcome Excuses

Gain the edge & meet your goals

G

reat people throughout history often fail, quite miserably, before finally reaching their goals. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime; Winston Churchill lost every public election until becoming prime minister at age 62; Henry Ford went bankrupt five times; Albert Einstein was a terrible student and was expelled from school; Sigmund Freud was booed from a stage. Ideas, brilliance, genius – they all mean nothing without the guts, passion and tenacity necessary to make your dream a reality. However, often, people fall back on excuses and give up on trying to reach their goals. Here are six tricks for jumping off the excuse train and forge the path to your goals.

Avoid the need to blame others for anything. Mean

toward your goal. Refuse to let yourself wallow in selfdoubt. You are alive to succeed. Stop comparing your current problems to your last 18 failures. They are not the same. You are not the same. Here is something to remember: Your entire life has been a training ground for you to capture your destiny right now. Why would you doubt that? Stop whining. Go conquer.

Ask yourself, “What can I do better next time?” Then do it next time. If you spend a decade or two

earnestly trying to be better that is exactly what will happen. The next best thing to doing something amazing is not doing something unintelligent. So learn from your mistakes and use the lessons to dominate.

Proactively take time to do things that fuel your passion. Exercise is a great example. Living in the moment

and small-minded people hope that by causing others to feel inadequate, everyone will forget about how woefully off the mark their own performance is. Do not blame anyone, for any reason, ever. It is a bad habit.

Stop working on things that just do not matter. If

Apologize to yourself and those around you for having a bad attitude. Do this once or twice and you

you work for a boss, then you owe them solid time. You cannot cut that out. However, you can cut out television time, meetings and anything else that gets in the way of achieving your goals. Replace entertainment with activity 30 June 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

Q. The inside corner of my eyes are

frequently red and irritated and I think I see a growth on the surface. Should I be concerned?

A. The most common issue in this scenario is a growth on the eye that is called a pterygium. This growth starts on the conjunctiva (white of the eye) but often progresses centrally onto the cornea and can affect vision. The factors that worsen this progression are genetics, too much sun exposure, and dryness. These are all factors that are rampant in Arizona. Wearing sunglasses and using frequent artificial tears can help prevent progression, but once these growths have progressed, they need to be removed with a minor surgical procedure. At our practice, our advanced treatment techniques involve removal and repair utilizing hi-tech, genetically engineered tissue applied with gentle tissue glue instead of stitches. You are able to return to reasonably normal activities on the first day or two after the procedure. Eye drops are necessary for one to two months after the procedure to help prevent the possibility of recurrence. Management of these issues at earlier stages will help significantly at preventing progression that can lead to serious blurring of vision. In order to prevent recurrence in the long term, it is important to get in the habit of protecting your eyes from the sun; a hat and sunglasses when out in the sun should be part of your daily routine.

Q. Is non-surgical spinal cord stimulation recommended for pain relief?

A. Often, when surgery fails and nerves are

damaged, a spinal cord stimulator is recommended to patients for pain relief. Spinal cord stimulators are similar to pacemakers used to keep the heart in rhythm. Instead of connecting the device to your heart, the device is connected to the dorsal column of the spinal cord. When the dorsal columns are activated by the spinal cord stimulator, pain is reduced or eliminated. Therefore, dorsal column stimulation can be a relief for folks suffering from chronic pain. Unfortunately, to implant a stimulator requires surgery and all of the complications associated with it. Sometimes the device fails or scar tissue forms or other adverse events happen. Because it is a surgical procedure, it also is expensive. Studies by researchers in Italy suggest that it may be possible to stimulate the dorsal columns of the spine and block pain without surgery and the potential complications of surgery. It is a unique type of electrical field shown to activate the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and block pain without surgery. Another method of activating the dorsal columns of the spinal cord without surgery is to apply vibration to the body. Using special MRIs, researchers were able to document activation of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord in response to vibration.

Q. How are brown age spots removed? A. There are many techniques and treatments available to remove freckles and age spots, but what many people don’t realize is that brown spots can be removed in a few, quick treatments.

Photo facial treatments use IPL (intense pulsed light) to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, such as freckles, age spots, acne, broken capillaries, rosacea and some cases of melasma. A photo facial is similar to a laser treatment in that it uses light energy to target pigment and redness while leaving the remaining skin untouched. It causes no damage to the dermis or epidermis. Once the treatment is complete, the spots will turn very dark and will fall off the face in about a week. As the skin cells naturally regenerate and fall off, the destroyed spots fall off as well. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and feels similar to numerous rubber band snaps. The skin may be red and warm for a few hours. This treatment is suitable for lighter skin types and not recommended for darker skin. The technician should always do a test spot on a hidden area before proceeding with the treatment, to ensure correct treatment levels and that the patient is a good candidate. Treatments cost anywhere from $100-$300 depending on the physician or medspa.

We combine electrical and vibration-induced stimulation of the spinal cord to help relieve pain in our patients. Our patients have reported excellent pain relief through this non-surgical treatment.

Q. What is a deep cleaning, and why do I need this done?

Q. What is pervasive developmental disorder?

Q. How does obesity induce sleep-

A. Great question! This is a fairly common concern amongst patients.

A. A pervasive developmental disorder is characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills and social interactions, as well as restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Asperger's syndrome and autism are two of the most common pervasive developmental disorders.

A. Obesity-induced sleep-disordered breathing

Regular cleanings (prophys), are done every six months as a way to remove plaque and calculus above the gum line. This helps maintain a healthy relationship between your teeth and the gums that attach them to your bone. However, in certain situations, bacteria can start to accumulate and you may begin to develop pockets between your teeth and the bone that hold them in. These pockets are diagnosed by using a perio probe, which acts like a small ruler and is painlessly used to measure the pocket depths. If the pockets are 3-mm or greater, there is the concern of periodontal disease. At that point, it becomes necessary to clean below the gum line. This is a fairly common procedure where our highly-trained hygienist begins by numbing the local area. This is generally not a painful procedure. Your hygienist will then use the scaling tool to carefully remove the plaque and tarter below the gum line and down to the bottom of each pocket. This removes the bacteria that are causing the pockets to continually get deeper. The hygienist will then smooth the root’s surface (root planning), which helps prevent bacteria from re-accumulating. After the deep cleaning is done, we recommend follow-up every 3-4 months to maintain the area. Brushing twice a day, flossing and a biannual cleaning can help with early detection and prevention of excessive bone loss.

The good news for young adults with pervasive developmental disorder is that corrective action can be taken. Weak underlying cognitive skills may be one of the reasons why a person struggles to learn at even a basic level. Memory training that focuses on weak cognitive skills, works by targeting memory centers in the brain that are weak and strive to make them stronger. A brain with even one weak cognitive skill is kind of like a shopping cart with a busted wheel. You can still do your shopping with it, but it will take you longer. In addition, if all four wheels are broken, you will have to carry the cart around the store, which is completely inefficient. Similarly, if all your cognitive skills are weak, learning will be next to impossible. Cognitive skills programs, including memory training, fix the wheels on the shopping cart so that a person can learn without impediment. Memory training really works. The reasons behind a bad memory are often mechanical and practical, and so the solution must be practical. Cognitive memory training is a viable solution that has worked for thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds. Professional cognitive memory training can benefit people with mild to severe memory issues. -Dr. Benson Excel Brain Fitness Center 602.451.8043

disordered breathing?

has fat collecting around the neck and abdominal area, putting pressure on the airway as well as the lungs, thus making it difficult for the body to breathe. The most likely candidates are middle aged and elderly males, who gain weight primarily in the neck and abdomen. This type of weight gain is dictated by testosterone. Similar weight gain occurs in women who are entering menopause, have hormonal imbalances, or who are pregnant. Weight gain has also been linked to insulin production, glucose intolerance, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. While metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalances and physiological changes such as menopause create difficult conditions for weight loss, research shows that weight loss significantly reduces sleep-disordered breathing problems. A 2002 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin and the Boston University School of Medicine identified obesity as one of a list of risk factors that, if reduced or eliminated, would decrease the severity of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. If you wake up tired in the morning, suffer from headaches, snore, experience gastro esophageal reflux, depression, any kind of cardiovascular or pulmonary disease and you are overweight, I highly suggest a neck circumference measurement and a body mass index (BMI) calculation. A neck circumference measurement of 17 inches or greater in men and 16 inches or greater in women and a BMI calculation greater than 25 is a good indication of a possible sleepdisordered breathing problem.

Your core strength is important for posture, management management of pain and strength. Gentle low back exercises are beneficial for building strength, preventing pain and improving flexibility. Core strength is important for blood circulation with the purpose of transporting nutrition and oxygen. With the fact that spinal discs are the areas of the spine that do not receive good blood supply, gentle core exercises such as abdominal muscle contraction not only support the spine, they help increase the supply of oxygen for proper healing. Your balance will improve if strong core strength is maintained. Lifestyle could affect body balance. A sedentary lifestyle will alter the balance. Balance exercise may assist your core strength, body reaction and a healthy mind. One exercise that I often use in practice is the exercise ball. Sitting on the exercise ball with a straight and neutral posture, and gently bounce up and down for about five minutes during the therapy. In addition, the age one exam allows you and your dentist to discuss:

This procedure involves removing excess skin and fat, or tightening lax muscles, to improve the appearance around the eyes. The upper blepharoplasty procedure removes excess skin of the upper eyelid. The lower blepharoplasty focuses on removing bulging fat pads (bags) underneath the eyes. These surgical techniques are performed in-office. They do not require general anesthesia and patients are able to walk in and out for these procedures. Blepharoplasties typically have minimal downtime and a quick recovery.

What to expect from eyelid surgery

• Proper use of fluoride

Incisions for blepharoplasty follow the natural contour lines in both upper and lower eyelids. How you scar depends on both the skill of the surgeon and your own genetic propensity for scaring. Typically, once healed, these scars are barely visible and blend into the eyelids’ natural lines and folds. When combined with a brow lift, this technique is effective in preserving or restoring facial harmony.

The age one dental visit focuses on early detection, prevention, and education. It is usually short with very little treatment, and your child gets the opportunity to meet your dentist in a non-threatening environment. During the exam, your dentist will check teeth for decay, examine the bite, and look for any potential problems with gums, jaw and oral tissue.

• Oral habits, including finger and thumb sucking • Ways to prevent damaging face and teeth accidents • Teething • Link between diet and oral health At the end of the first appointment, your dentist will discuss a follow-up schedule customized to your child’s needs. Q. What alternatives are available for chronic pain treatment when medications, physical therapy, injection therapy and surgery all fail adequately to control pain?

A. Many people suffer with pain. Many of

those who suffer from chronic pain after trying the aforementioned treatments without adequate pain relief feel they will be relegated to high-dose opioid medication in order to cope with the pain. Opioid medication treatment can be debilitating in and of itself, making it difficult to function on a day-to-day basis. A relatively new treatment to mainstream medicine is spinal cord stimulation. Spinal cord stimulation is a pain treatment modality based on reducing the intensity, duration and frequency of pain. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the pain pathways as they travel through the spinal cord. For appropriate patients, excellent pain relief can be obtained with this treatment from any number of pain syndromes, including failed back surgery syndrome, phantom limb pain, pain resulting from trauma, and pain from diabetes or other systemic diseases. In addition to inhibiting the pain pathways, it also works in modulating the sympathetic nervous system, which is helpful in treating pain resulting from complex regional pain syndrome (which results in severe pain to normal stimulation, such as light touch). Spinal cord stimulation has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of several pain syndromes, which can reduce and possibly eliminate, relying on opioid medications for pain control.

Q. Can diabetes affect my oral health?

Q. Do men get Botox treatments?

A. Diabetes is a disease that not only affects your body; it affects your oral health. If you have diabetes, then you are at a higher risk than those without diabetes of experiencing oral health problems. This is mostly contributed to difficulties controlling blood sugars. The more imbalances present, the more oral health problems that arise. This is because uncontrolled diabetes impairs white blood cells, which are the body's main defense against bacterial infections in the mouth such as periodontal disease.

A. In the past few years, there has been a

It is essential to follow good dental care practices, to pay special attention to any changes in your oral health, and to seek a prompt dental consultation if such changes occur. Here are some tips to consider: • Keep your blood sugar as close to normal as possible. • Schedule your dental appointments in the morning. • At each dental care visit, tell your dentist about the status of your diabetes. • See your diabetes doctor before scheduling treatment for periodontal disease. Ask your doctor to talk to your dentist, periodontist, or oral surgeon about your medical condition prior to dental treatment. • Find an office that provides all of your dental specialties under one roof to ensure knowledge of all of your medical conditions be in one place to eliminate confusion. • Be sure to get infections, such as abscesses, treated right away. • Healing may be delayed in people with diabetes. BUSINESS TALK

Q. With the triple digits here, how can visitors get the most from a summertime trip to Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium? A. Visitors that wish to see each of the 600

species at Wildlife World during the summer months, I recommend arriving early. Doors open at 9 a.m. daily. Be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen. Upon entering, head into the main zoo grounds to take advantage of shows, bird feedings, petting zoo and the giraffe feeding station. Be sure to see the all-new 15-acre Safari with the state's only white lion. The outdoor terrestrial animals will be more active as keepers make their way to each exhibit to feed and clean. During the afternoon, many of the species housed outdoors seek shade and/ or settle down to digest a meal or to take a nap!

There are three air conditioned indoor exhibit buildings on the zoo side featuring reptiles, small mammals and baby animals. In addition, the pathway through Dragon World, which features giant reptiles like a salt-water crocodile, is heavily shaded. The spacious aquarium exhibit buildings are also climate controlled and feature hundreds of aquatic animals including California sea lion – the only marine mammals in the state! Families can enjoy a great barbecue and a cold drink at Dillon’s KC style BBQ restaurant at the aquarium. If you want to skip the heat altogether and save money, there is a reduced Aquarium-only admission after 5 p.m. A relaxing dinner next to the giant shark tank at Dillon’s followed by a stroll through the aquarium grounds makes for a great family outing or date night.

Q. Does Wheatgrass improve general well-being?

A. With its high level of enzymes and amino

acids, wheatgrass works like a natural cleanser to detoxify the liver, eliminate toxic heavy metals from the blood stream, rid the body of waste matter, and slow down the aging process. It is an effective and beneficial supplement known to help increase energy, improve sleep, increase strength, naturally regulate blood sugar, support weight loss, improve digestion and elimination, support healthy skin, teeth, eyes, muscles and joints, improve function of our heart-lungs, reproductive organs, heal ulcers, skin sores and improve mental function. In addition, it is proven beneficial to conditions such as anemia, diabetes, eczema, constipation, dental infections and detoxifying the body from environmental pollutants. Wheatgrass is high in oxygen, like all green plants that contain chlorophyll, and beneficial because the brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level in a highly- oxygenated environment. The mixture and synergy of elements in wheatgrass, created by nature, has the perfect balance and right amount and right kind of nutrition in its most absorbable form. Synthetic supplements may have a high amount of nutrition, but if the right proportion and synergy of nutrients are not achieved, the body will not be able to absorb it and most, if not all, will go to waste. Wheatgrass, because of its similarity to the human blood chemistry, is completely assimilated in the body in 20 minutes.

Have a safe and fun summer—and be sure to always watch your kids around water!

Q. Why should I use the LaserTouchOne?

Q. Why are my hearing aids so loud?

A. The medical world is just now awakening

A. In some cases, hearing aids have been improperly programmed due to an inaccurate test or miscommunication between the technician and the client. In most cases though, there is a certain amount of rehabilitation that must occur for you to be able to comfortably enjoy your hearing aids.

to the healing powers of low-level light laser and low-level micro current. This is the makeup of the LaserTouchOne. What makes it so unique is it works to repair damaged cells and normalize their function, which initiates a healing process. When cells are healthy, pain dissipates.

Doctors, universities and professional sports teams are using the LaserTouchOne with great success. Pro golfers love it. WHY? It works for them. Patients and players recover much faster and get back to doing what they do. More than 34 million people are now addicted to prescription drugs. Why is that? Pain medication mask the message to the brain, but it doesn’t address the cause of the pain. The LaserTouchOne identifies the source and works to relieve the pain by healing the injured tissue. I had three bulging disc and sciatica pain down my leg when a pain specialist introduced me to LaserTouchOne. Within two weeks, of using LaserTouchOne I was playing golf again with no pain and I am not an isolated case. Barbara in Sun City West had two neck operations years ago, but still has had her pain for the last 42 years. An RN, she told me she doubts that the LaserTouchOne would help her, but she felt she wanted to try it. Six weeks later she called me to say thanks and that I had given her her life back. There are thousands of stories like this from people who have used the LaserTouchOne.

Many manufacturers now have acclimatization programs in order to help you grow accustomed to your hearing aids. Sound in the world is a constant and does not change. Your ability to hear that sound, and then tolerate that sound with amplification does change. In most cases, your hearing aid can be made more comfortable, to help you get used to them and then the intensity can be increased over time to achieve the appropriate amount of amplification. If this “rehabilitative process” is handled properly then you can achieve correction and comfort throughout your hearing aid wearing experience. Ultimately, the longer that you wear your hearing aid, the better your results. If you are having problems with your hearing aid, do not hesitate to contact your audiologist or hearing instrument specialist.

All you have to do is make a call to see if it will help you. There is no charge to do this. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If you are skeptical, I want to hear from you. If you feel hopeless, I want to hear from you. – Bill Yvon LaserTouchOne 602.403.4185

Q. I am turning 65 soon and will be

eligible for Medicare. Every day my mailbox is full of advertisements from insurance companies wanting me to purchase or enroll in “additional” coverage. Won’t my Medicare provide the health coverage I need?

A.

You have probably heard the term “traditional” or “original” Medicare. Those terms refer to Part “A”, hospitalization and Part “B” medical. Simply put, Medicare will provide coverage while in a hospital or skilled nursing facility, as well as medical services on an outpatient basis, i.e., doctor visits, tests, scans, outpatient surgery, etc. Medicare has greatly benefited beneficiaries since its inception in 1965. However, benefits are not 100 percent comprehensive. This means Medicare recipients are responsible for deductibles, co-pays, and a 20 percent co-insurance for all services rendered on an outpatient basis. In addition, traditional Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage commonly referred to as Part D of Medicare. Your question above can only be answered when all out-of-pocket risks are understood with careful consideration to individual healthcare needs and expectations. Medicare beneficiaries who reside in Arizona have many plans and options available to them that cover completely or greatly reduce the financial burdens associated with the high cost of healthcare. Healthcare is changing and Medicare is not exempt from those changes. Before making this very important decision, I always recommend having a trusted professional, who specializes in serving the Medicare community, answer your questions and provide accurate information and options.

Make Your Own Family-Friendly Vacation

S

o many resorts are billed as the best for families, and do live up to the hype for the throngs of visitors who plan vacations each year. However, if your family is interested in avoiding the long lines and the franchised fun, you may be happy to know you are in good company. It is possible to manufacture your own family vacation without partaking in one of the preassembled family plans. According to the travel-planning site Expedia(R), a few countries are more vacation deprived than others. These include the United States, Canada, Mexico, Singapore, Japan and South Korea. North Americans earn fewer vacation days than most countries. Even still, they are also more likely to leave two or more days of earned vacation time unused. Affordability and saving days for future obligations is why people are apt to squander away vacation time. When vacations are taken, however, families could want to maximize time spent together and look for some key features. When planning your next family quest, consider these vacation pointers.

Just because a hotel or resort is not billed as a family place does not mean it is not familyfriendly. Read reviews from people who have stayed at the hotel. See how they rate the hotel in terms of amenities and 44

June 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

figure out what strengths the property has. If people remark about the romantic atmosphere, it probably caters to couples. If an array of food options and activities are touted, the hotel could be good for families.

Choose a resort that offers baby-sitting services or a few child-central activities. While the goal of the family vacation is to spend time together, there are likely to be moments when each person may want to do his own thing. Parents looking for some time away will benefit from a resort that has a child care center on the property. Plus, children may appreciate being independent from their parents for a few hours and having fun with others their own ages.

Find a destination with a mix of ethnic and familiar cuisine. Of all the people in the family, children tend to be the most finicky when it comes to dining options. Some parents are lucky enough to have children open to all food suggestions, but most have children who have a few favorites and do not stray far from those options. Therefore, opt for a port of call that not only enables you to sample the local cuisine, but also has a chain restaurant or familiar foods that children will be sure to eat.

Think outside the hotel box. When vacation deals pop up on your Internet search engines, it can be easy to think

these plans are the only ones out there. However, with a little more research and work, families can often-custom tailor a vacation that is memorable. For example, many local property owners sublet their condominiums or vacation houses to others throughout the year. Instead of booking a hotel in a resort, you may be able to rent a house or condo for a week so you will have more room to stretch out— something that is advantageous with an entire family in tow – and a kitchen to make a few meals. This saves on expenses and arguments over when and where to dine out.

Plan activities around your youngest traveler. While you may want to scale mountains or dive the depths of the ocean, having a young child in tow may hamper some of these intense plans. That is not to say you cannot try things outside of the comfort zone. While you may not be able to scuba dive, you may be able to snorkel with a toddler coasting along on an inflatable raft. You may need to bring a child carrier along for a challenging hike. Cater to your weakest link so you are not left with high expectations and cranky children.

Smile. Your search for a new dentist is over! We provide thoughtful, modern dental care. Call for an appointment today. Emergency appointments available.

Schedule some down time to enjoy your surroundings. The vacation cannot be all about a strict itinerary. With children along for the experience, they will appreciate some moments to just venture and explore or engage in some imaginative play. Do not feel the need to over-schedule every minute of the vacation. Otherwise, you may leave feeling more spent than relaxed.

Do not cut too many corners. A couple traveling may be able to make do with the bare minimum, but the entire family traveling together will benefit from some creature comforts. It could be wise to fly to your destination rather than enduring 12 hours of the dreaded "Are we there yet?" chant. Find a hotel that will offer some of the children’s favorite cable channels, so they can catch up on cartoons while parents are sleeping in. Opt for the two-room suite rather than the efficiency if you can afford it, so that everyone will have more elbowroom. Splurge on that goofy $20 photo that shows the entire clan mouths agape while riding down the log flume. Create memories that you will want to recall for all of the good reasons instead of the poor ones.

Swimming Lessons & Water Safety

A

lthough time spent in the water can be refreshing and entertaining, water does present certain hazards, particularly for those who do not know how to swim. The World Health Organization says drowning is the says drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death across the globe, accounting for 7 percent of all injuryrelated deaths. Children, males and individuals with increased access to water are most at risk of drowning. In general, children under 5 years of age have the highest drowning mortality rates in the world. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should consider swimming lessons for most children between the ages of one and four. New research has revealed that swimming instruction for children between the ages of one and four may decrease drowning risk. However, parents should be advised that swimming lessons do not remove all risk. Children still need constant supervision when in and around water. Additionally, learning CPR can be a life-saving measure.

When enrolling children in swim lessons, parents should look for safety-certified instructors who have first aid and resuscitation training and certification. The American Red Cross or the YMCA sponsors many programs offered. Private swim clubs may have their own instructors.

1 to 3 years old Children between the ages of one and three typically do not have the motor coordination to swim effectively. These children can benefit from swim lessons that emphasize getting used to the water, safety and learning some swimming readiness skills. Instruction may involve teaching children how to move their legs and arms and strengthen muscles used for swimming.

4 to 5 years old Children between the ages of four and five may be more developmentally ready for swimming. Such youngsters may move from water-safety lessons to actual swimming with or without support. A study titled, Children's readiness for learning front crawl swimming published in The Australian Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport showed that whether children started lessons at two, 3 or 4 years of age, they learned to swim well at approximately the same mean age of five and a half years.

Learning to swim, especially at a young age, is advisable and a great way to remain safe around the water.

46 June 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

In addition to swimming lessons, parents and other adults can ensure water safety by taking the following precautionary measures: • Children should never be left unattended in the water. • Keep rescue equipment by the pool. • Remove toys from the pool when it is not in use. These toys can attract children who will go in after them. • Even adults should be watched while swimming.

FITNESS, NUTRITION & SPORTS

STAY ACTIVE & FIT

By Dr. Brett Osborn, author of Get Serious, A Neurosurgeon’s Guide to Optimal Health and Fitness

Building Muscle for Better Health

If you want good health, a long life and to feel your best well into old age, the No. 1 most important thing you can do is strength training. Muscle is all protein – nothing but good for you. Fat, however, is an endocrine organ, meaning it releases hormones and other chemicals. When a person has excess fat, he or she also has a disrupted flow of excess biochemicals, which can increase insulin resistance, boost risk factors for stroke and high blood pressure, among other problems. Increased cytokines, an immune system chemical, for example, are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease. You are only as old as your arteries! Strength training has health benefits for everyone, no matter their size. Some fat is visceral fat – it is stored around the organs and it is even more dangerous than the fat you can see. People who look thin may actually be carrying around a lot of visceral fat. These five exercises are the pillars of a solid training regime.

Squats The squat is a full-body exercise; it is the basic movement around which all training should be centered. Heavy squats generate a robust hormonal response as numerous muscular structures are traumatized during the movement (even your biceps). Standing erect with a heavy load on your back, and 48

June 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

then repeatedly squatting down will stress your body inordinately – in a good way – forcing it to grow more muscle.

Overhead press The overhead press primarily activates the shoulders, arm extenders and chest. Lower body musculature is also activated as it counters the downward force of the dumbbell supported by the trainee. From the planted feet into the hands, force is transmitted through the skeletal system, stabilized by numerous muscular structures, most importantly the lower back.

Deadlift centers The deadlift centers on the hamstrings, buttocks, lumbar extensors and quadriceps, essentially the large muscles of your backside and the front of your thighs. As power is transferred from the lower body into the bar through the upper body conduit, upper back muscles are also stressed, contrasting with the squat, which is supported by the hands. Deadlifts are considered by some to be the most complete training exercise.

Bench press The bench press mostly targets the chest, shoulders and triceps; it is the most popular among weightlifters, and it is very simple – trainees push the barbell off the lower chest until the arms are straight. This motion stresses not only

the entire upper body, but also the lower body, which serves a stabilizing function. This provides a big hormonal response and plenty of bang for your buck.

Pull-up /Chin-up The pull-up /chin-up stress upper body musculature into the body. A pull-up is done when hands gripping over the bar; a chin-up is where hands are gripping under the bar. Nine out of 10 people cannot do this exercise because most simply have not put in the effort. It has also been called a

“man’s exercise, which is nonsense. There are no genderspecific exercises. Women, too, should aspire to enjoy the health benefits entailed with this pillar. There are no secrets to a strong and healthier body; hard work is required for the body that will remain vital and strong at any age. Always practice proper form and safety. Otherwise, the result will be the opposite of your goal, an injury. azhealthandliving.com |June 2014

The Queen of Comedy

Leslie Mann

continues to shine With more than 20 years in Hollywood, comedian and actress Leslie Mann is still going strong. Since her comedy movie debut in The Cable Guy in 1996, she has been a mainstay on the big screen, starring alongside names like Adam Sandler, Steve Carell, Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman and more. This year, Mann has roles in three big hits—Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Rio 2 and The Other Woman. Mr. Peabody & Sherman and Rio 2 are both animated films where Mann lends her vocal talents to two of the main characters. In Mr. Peabody & Sherman, she plays Patty Peterson—mom to one of the children who experiences time traveling adventures. In Rio 2, she reprises her role as Linda Gunderson, the human caretaker of the movie’s main feathered character, Blu. In contrast, in The Other Woman, Mann’s role takes on a more serious—yet completely relatable—tone. “Leslie Mann’s comedic timing and standout performances captivate audiences and critics alike,” the movie’s official website, theotherwomanmovie.com raves. In addition to her recent screen time, Mann has also starred in career changing movies like Knocked Up, This is 40 and The Bling Ring. She has also appeared on popular TV shows and has earned accolades such as being nominated for a Critics’ Choice Movie Award. “Mann’s appeal comes from the juxtaposition of her

leading-lady beauty and the unself-conscious, gung-ho vigor she brings to her performances,” writer Rachael Combe says in a 2012 article in Elle Magazine about Mann and her role in This is 40. She goes on to say that in the film “Mann doesn’t just walk off with scenes—she steals the show.” As if this year is not busy enough, according to Variety, Mann is set to star in DreamWorks comedy Las Madres. Off camera, Mann balances the titles of mom and wife. She has been married to producer Judd Apatow since 1997 and the duo is known for often working together on projects. They also tend to keep acting in the family as their two daughters often co-star alongside Mann.

Still, even as a Hollywood leading lady, finding balance is not always easy. She recently confessed this to Stylist Magazine: ''I have put stuff on hold - little bits here and there. There were times I chose to raise my children, to be with them. And Judd makes more money than me so it makes sense. Even now they’re 11 and 16, I feel incredibly guilty being away from them. I miss them so much. It's hard because when I'm with them every single day and night and they're like 'Do this! Get me that! Drive me here!' I'm like 'Argh! I wish I could be off working!' But I try to find the balance, even though it's impossible.'' When they are not working together, Mann and Apatow are involved in their community. They support causes such as the UCLA Rape Treatment Center's Stuart House, 826LA (a nonprofit that encourages writing skills among disadvantaged youth) and others. If her past and current career success is any indicator, we are sure this queen of comedy will reign in Hollywood for many more years to come. azhealthandliving.com | June 2014

Protect Your Hair & Feet This Summer

M

any people find their appearances benefit from warm weather and time spent outdoors, provided they are wearing sunscreen and taking precautions against skin damage. However, a few parts of the body may pay the price for time spent enjoying the sand, surf and other elements of summer.

Hair After a day spent soaking up summer sun, men and women may experience breakage, loss of color, frizziness and tangles. Healthy, beautiful hair requires protection and a few changes to your normal grooming procedure.

Sunscreen. Certain formulations of sunscreens are designed to be sprayed on the hair and scalp. Additionally, certain shampoos and conditioners may protect hair from UV rays, providing further defense against the sun.

Conditioner. Deep conditioning can restore some vitality to hair that has been dried out by the sun and surf. In addition to weekly conditioning treatments in the shower, apply a leave-in conditioner to the hair prior to going to the beach or in the pool. This conditioner will offer another layer of protection and help shield the hair follicles from damage while preventing chlorine from penetrating.

Baking soda treatment. Some of the chemicals in pool water, namely copper algaecides, can tint blonde hair green. To combat this, rinse hair with a mixture of spring water and a teaspoon of baking soda to clean away chemical residues.

Over processing. It may be better to wait until the

summer season is over before utilizing chemical processes at the salon. Coloring, getting a perm or straightening hair may compromise already taxed tresses. Color tends to fade more quickly in the sun and after exposure to chlorinated water.

Brushing. Avoid brushing wet hair, which can rip out hair from the roots and lead to breakage. Comb through wet locks and go over gently with a brush. 54 June 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

Feet Open-toed shoes or even walking barefoot is popular come summertime. However, strolls in the sand or around town can cause dangerous or uncomfortable conditions to the feet if caution is not taken.

Microorganisms. Warm, damp conditions can create a

veritable breeding ground for the microorganisms that lead to plantar warts, athlete's foot, ringworm and other infections. Closed-in shoes will provide protection against these organisms. If your feet do get wet, change out of your shoes and dry your feet.

Sunburn. People often overlook their feet when applying sunscreen. Spending long hours in the sun can expose the feet to the same harmful rays that are baking other areas of your body. According to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, people often do not apply sunscreen to their feet when they apply sunscreen to the rest of their bodies. However, skin cancer can occur on the feet as well.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

Support. Some summer shoes tend to be flimsy and lack support. Wearing this type of footwear can lead to ankle, leg and back pain. Always look for shoes that provide good sole and ankle support. Burns. Hot pavement, sand and other surfaces can easily burn the bottoms of your feet. Test the temperature before walking barefoot. Better yet, wear a water shoe or a sandal to protect your feet from hot temperatures, broken shells or debris that may cut the soles of your feet. Pedicures. Visiting a salon for a pedicure is a great way to keep feet healthy. Pedicures typically involve soaking, massage, moisturization and toenail care. Always visit a salon that uses sterilized tools to prevent infection, or bring your own set of tools to ensure cleanliness. azhealthandliving.com | June 2014

PLAN & SAVE

By Michael E. Gerber, author of The E-Myth: Why Most Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It

A Blank Piece of Paper Can be Your Best Tool

S

tatistically, new small businesses have the odds against them, with more than half failing within the first five years, according to the Small Business Administration. They have hamstrung themselves even more recently with their reluctance to hire new employees. Almost 80 percent of small businesses did little to no hiring this summer, according to the National Federation of Independent Business. No new employees, no new ideas, no new projects – too many entrepreneurs have become paralyzed by fear and uncertainty. Instead of operating out of a place of extreme caution, essentially treading water, and just waiting for something good to happen, small-business owners should sit down with a blank piece of paper and a beginner’s mind. With that paper in front of you, open your mind to all you have never thought of and create something that does not exist: a product, a service, a system. That will awaken your creativity and inspire innovation. Create something new! How else can small-business owners reframe their thinking and tap into that spark that initially set them on their course?

Do not be so mired in today that you do not lay the groundwork for infinite possibilities tomorrow. Modesty

is often seen as a virtue, but if you are an entrepreneur, it is a tragic flaw. What if Steve Jobs’ ambition was to make electronics “a little bit better?” What would the world look like today without iTunes, iPod, iPhone and iPad? Jobs started out with only $5,000 – but also a grand vision that he believed in. Thousands of entrepreneurs see their business as a means of doing their work autonomously; they get by and see this as a win. However, modest success may be a tragic handicap.

Self-employment is one thing; a thriving business is something altogether different. A small business starts with

an idea, but too often, the idea is “I have a talent (or technical skill); I’ll build my business around my execution of that talent.” While this may create the means for self-employment, it closes off the avenues for growth. When a business owner trusts no one else to get the work done, he or she cannot pull away enough to develop new ideas, new products and new opportunities to grow. Find people who can replicate the technical aspects of what you do so that you are free to explore experiment and test.

Make sure everyone is working toward the same goal. A

small business is a system in which all parts contribute to the success or failure of the whole. A human body cannot move forward unless all parts cooperate. If your employees are working toward different goals, they are not helping in moving the business forward, they are not playing as a team. Foster creativity, enthusiasm, and energy by clearly communicating the dream and the importance and value of each person’s contribution toward it.

Learning disabilities, hearing loss, speech delays, violent behavior and, in rare cases, seizures and even death: these are just some of the effects lead paint poisoning has on young children. If your home was built before 1978, lead paint on your walls, doors, windows and sills may be dangerous. And it’s not just large paint chips that can cause damage. In fact, three granules of lead dust are enough to poison your child. Let’s make all kids lead-free kids. Are Eye Floaters Dangerous?

ark spots, specks, webs and other shapes that seemingly dance around in a person's field of vision are often referred to as floaters. Such floaters are typically harmless, but there are instances when they can be indicative of something more serious. The perception of floaters in the eye is called myodesopsia. They are particularly noticeable when looking at a lightcolored background, such as the sky.

What causes floaters? Floaters are formed when very small pieces of the eye's gel-like substance, called vitreous, break loose in the inner back portion of the eye. Vitreous is the part of the eye between the lens and the retina and contains a clear jelly called the vitreous humor. The vitreous has a gel-like consistency initially, but as a person ages the vitreous begins to dissolve and liquefy. Some of the undissolved gel particles can break off and float around in the more watery center of the vitreous, forming floaters. Shadows from the floating particles, and not the debris itself, are what you actually see in the eye. As light passes through the eye, shadows from the particles are cast onto the retina. They seem to move around in the eye following the rapid movement of the eye.

When should I be alarmed? Most eye floaters are quite common and not dangerous at all. However, consult an eye doctor if the floaters interfere with your quality of life or impair your ability to read or drive a car. If floaters suddenly increase or are accompanied by light flashes or losses in peripheral vision, this could be a sign of a serious condition known as retinal detachment. The National Eye Institute offers that a retinal detachment occurs when any part of the retina is lifted or pulled from its normal position at the back of the wall of the eye. Left untreated, a retinal detachment can lead to permanent visual impairment or even blindness in a matter of a few days. Surgery is required to seal any holes in the retina or to reattach the retina to the back of the eyeball.

Prevention and treatment Many eye conditions, including floaters, are a hereditary condition. If someone in your family is prone to severe eye 60

June 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

floaters, there is a good chance you may experience the same. However, taking some precautions can help improve eye health and reduce your risk of developing floaters. • Avoid excessive rubbing of the eyes. • Do not sleep facedown where the eyes will be rubbed in sleep. • Recognize some medications carry side effects that can affect the eyes. Talk to an optometrist about medications you take and discuss potential alternatives. • Avoid risky sports. Head and eye trauma can lead to new eye floaters. Blows to the head and face can cause vitreous material to detach. If you have floaters that are dense and numerous, a procedure called a vitrectomy may be recommended. This procedure removes the vitreous gel along with the floating debris, replacing the gel with a salt solution. A vitrectomy is a potentially risky procedure, so it is often reserved only for those suffering from severe floaters. Experimental laser therapy to dissolve the floaters is another potential treatment option, though this procedure is still not widely used. Most floaters are left untreated, and patients are advised to live with them and learn to cope. Eye floaters are common and usually carry no risks. If they become prevalent or accompanied by flashes of light, visit your eye doctor as soon as possible.

Tips for Calculating Withdrawal Rates in Retirement

B

aby boomers have been retiring in droves in recent years, and will continue to do so throughout the next decade – 10,000 of them a day, the Pew Research Center estimates. Unfortunately, the average boomer is about a $500,000 short on their savings, according to a recent survey by TD Ameritrade. We have already entered upon an unprecedented moment in retirement history; never has so many people, with such variability in financial wealth, retired at once. Clients want to know when they can retire, how much they can withdraw from their savings, and how confident they can be that they will not outlive their money. If the facts of their wealth do not support their goals for retirement, then they will need to do one of three things: adjust their expectations, change their financial behavior, or know how to improve their wealth, because the last thing any retiree wants is to run out of money while in their 80s or 90s. Here are some fundamental aspects of retirement that may help in making better financial decisions after the working years.

The 4 percent rule – a good target for withdrawals

We have already entered upon an unprecedented moment in retirement history; never has so many people, with such variability in financial wealth, retired at once. 62

June 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

When can you start pulling from your retirement portfolio, and how much should you withdraw? Twenty years ago, Bill Bengen came up with the answer: A well-allocated portfolio subjected to an initial 4 percent withdrawal, and adjusted for annual inflation thereafter, would survive at least 30 years in almost all scenarios. Given today’s market, however, once-stable rules have been significantly challenged. Just one factor in recent years throwing off Bengen’s rule is low bond yields, which historically averaged 5 to 6 percent, but today are much lower. The 4 percent rule is still a good target, but it is not absolute.

Seven variables Seven variables should be included in an individual retiree’s plan: portfolio size, portfolio return, savings, living expenses (including taxes), years to retirement and withdrawal rate. Each of these variables is multifaceted, and it is important to understand how each affects the others.

A simple formula for calculating withdrawal rates Whether you are working with a professional or you are a do-it-yourselfer, retirees and pre-retirees want to know how much they should have in savings; how much they will receive from fixed income sources, and what they will be spending for living expenses. Here is a simple formula. Subtract your annual fixed retirement income (Social Security, pensions) from your expected annual living expenses in retirement, including income taxes. That is how much you will need to withdraw from savings each year. If the figure is 4 percent, and you have a well-balanced portfolio, you can reasonably expect to have a reliable income during retirement for 30 years. If the total is 5 percent, you probably have enough to last 30 years, but you may have to cut back on your spending later in retirement. If the percentage is 8 percent, you do not have enough money to pay for many years of retirement.

Look No Further! Relief is right here in Arizona Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropractic and science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness.

Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments.
