Many of us know from experience that the job search is challenging, and requires a great time commitment. Questions come up that are difficult to answer: current resume trends, skills employers are seeking, or hiring stan-

dards of different industries. As you transition from college to the start of your career, guidance during this time is essential. The Design Your Search (DYS) program supports every student in a job and/or internship search process with resources and directions that address common job search topics and questions. These topics include how to create action plans and research industries, how to customize resumes and application materials, and how to best evaluate opportunities to accept an offer that is a match for you. One of the core principles of this program is that you are encouraged and empowered to take charge of your career, so DYS is a self-paced program. You can utilize the program to meet your

needs based on your goals. As the job or internship seeker, you determine the number of hours you spend in the program, the activities and resources you use, the amount of interaction you want with a Career Educator, as well as your ultimate goal of what you want out of Design Your Search. One unique aspect of the program is that it is intended to provide support through you receiving and accepting an offer. In this program, you can learn about conducting a successful search through our online program modules in D2L. In addition, you will get consistent help from trained peers, and through one-on-one meetings with a Career Educator who will communicate with you at critical points or when you have questions.

While DYS is intended to support students and soon-to-be-graduates through the search process, many of these same steps are also applicable to applying to graduate school. Having a strong resume or CV is important, as is making a plan for research, so many of the steps can also be applied to how one would navigate grad school applications. As you are planning for your next steps, the Design Your Search program and Student Engagement and Career Development is here to support you and provide guidance in planning for your career – from early exploration to the process of receiving offers for employment, and all steps in between. DESIGN LAB PREPARING STUDENTS TO SOLVE THE

Now more than ever, employers demand new hires to be agile thinkers, prepared to take on the complicated challenges of today and the unscripted ones of tomorrow. “To be successful, students need to be able to navigate the ambiguity that comes with rapid change,” says Carly Croman, who leads Design Lab efforts in Student Engagement and Career Development. “The UA Design Lab provides a way for students to shape their future by shifting their perspective.” Born of ambiguity itself, with an internship posting made of more questions than answers, UA Design Lab launched in 2019 with 12 interns willing to learn together. Interns learned and applied creative problem solving skills, like design thinking, to challenges presented by campus and community partners. One was UA Global, the unit that leads the international vision of the University of Arizona. Caitlin Hooker, along with five other NAU Career Resource Guide_HR 10X5.31 Color student interns, including Vanessa

Ojeda-Gomez, took on their first challenge: to understand what students want and need from a new global space that would help foster community for those far from home. “I was really Caitlin Hooker nervous at first because I was like, what am I doing?” says Caitlin Hooker, sophomore creative writing major. “It was a new process for me, much more professional than anything I’d done before.” To address their design challenge, the team gathered student feedback through one-on-one interviews, focus groups, and talking with students on the UA Mall. “We had a gap in our capacity,” says Erin Chadd, Director for Special Projects at UA Global. “The design interns not only increased our capacity to get the feedback we needed but added impor8/21/2019 4:47 PM Page 1 tant student voices that might other-

COMPLEX PROBLEMS OF TODAY AND TOMORROW wise be missing.” Along the way, the team uncovered other insights as well. “The process opened doors for me and the team to be more open-minded and allowed for everyone to bring Vanessa their perspectives Ojeda-Gomez to the table,” says Ojeda-Gomez. At the end of the semester, the students presented their data and findings. “We wanted that different angle and it really made a difference,” says Chadd from UA Global. While the end result was useful for UA Global, the real benefit came through the process itself. “Design Lab helped me identify the skills I had and push them one step further,” says Hooker. “It helped me see that the skills I was learning in my creating writing courses could be applied elsewhere. There are so many other

ways I can be creative.” The students also experienced a new comfort level with ambiguity. “Design thinking has helped me roll with the punches, especially with the unknown,” continues Hooker. “Before, I would feel anxious and just shut down. Now I process ambiguity differently.” For Ojeda-Gomez, embracing ambiguity led her someplace she didn’t know she wanted to go. “Ambiguity is okay. It doesn’t mean that you failed. It’s allowed me to start thinking about what else I want out of my future. If it weren’t for this experience, I never would have discovered my love for education. It changed my whole life; it’s made me confident in ambiguity and the unknown, whether it’s taking risks in my future career or just in my personal life.”

THE DO’S & DON’TS OF ASKING FOR A RECOMMENDATION

Whether you’re applying for an internship, full-time job, or admission to graduate school, nearly any application will ask you either for a list of references or letters of recommendation. While it may seem like your references will be doing the work in this step, you need to do a few things on your end to make sure you end up with a great recommendation. Here are a few tips to consider:

DO HELP THEM HELP YOU.

A quick email detailing what position or program you’re applying for, what skills you’re hoping they can speak to, and attaching a copy of your current resume can help a potential reference verify your qualifications and provide more evidence in support of your application.

CONSIDER THE CONTEXT.

Not all references are created equal. Take time to carefully consider who can give you the best reference. If you’re applying to graduate school, faculty members who have worked with you in your academic area will make the biggest impact. Similarly, if applying for a job, include references from supervisors who can speak about your work style and performance. Cultivate a large network of potential references so that you can pick and choose based on what skills and qualities you’re hoping your reference can vouch for.

KEEP CONTACTS FRESH.

While faculty, staff, and former supervisors want to support you, it’s hard to do so if you haven’t spoken to them in years. Select recommenders who you’ve worked with for an extended period of time and who you’ve

maintained a relationship with. Be sure to stay connected through LinkedIn or email to keep them in the loop with what you’ve been up to. Not only will they enjoy hearing updates, but they’ll be ready to speak to how you’ve grown.

SAY THANK YOU! Show your gratitude for their time by following up and letting them know what happened. They’ll love celebrating your wins with you, and even if you don’t get an offer, they’ll be there looking for ways to show you continued support.

DON’T ASSUME THEY’LL SAY YES. Even for long-standing references and mentors, it’s never good to get a reference call out of the blue. Surprise calls can throw a reference off course if they aren’t sure what you’re going for or how they can best serve as a reference.

USE FAMILY AND FRIENDS. Recommenders and references should be professional or academic contacts who can speak to your work in context. Recommendations from family and friends may not be taken seriously as the recommendation is clearly biased (of course your mom loves you!), or interviewers may worry that you don’t actually have anyone in your professional life who can speak to your work.

WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. Writing a good letter of recommendation can take a long time, so be sure to give your contacts plenty of time to write your letter- at least two weeks, and more if you can.

FORGET TO FOLLOW UP. Haven’t heard from your reference? Stay on top of it and be sure to send a reminder. You may want to ask at least one more person to write a letter than you’ll need so that if someone can’t get you a letter in time, you can still complete the application process.

Growing up is a constant evolution, and the same can be said of our hopes and dreams. When it comes to career, how many of us declared early on that we would be a veterinarian, or a fire fighter, or an architect? Most of us have made and revised such career proclamations many times over, starting as soon as we learned to talk and stretching right up through the present day. But the “you” of kindergarten or middle school or even yesterday is not necessarily the “you” of today. Realizing what you love to learn, do, and become over your lifetime is ideally what you came to college to find out, right? With these truths in mind, we created the UA Job Shadow Program to deliver real-life career exploration experiences to as many Wildcats as possible. So, what, exactly, is a job shadow? It’s a one-day, professional experience where you get to spend time at and

soak up the realities of a workplace and the roles within it. Because of our wide network of alumni and friends, we offer shadows throughout Arizona and across the country. The shadow opportunity is free to UA students, though travel and transportation is entirely up to you. Each employer offers a different, custom experience, depending on the role of the host and the vibe and environment of the company. But every single shadow promises that you get real-time,

real-world insight into your career learning and desires. With only a year of the program under our belt, we have already witnessed huge revelations from participating students of all backgrounds and passions. “I learned so much about the city and about city issues in the span of a day.
