ROOMMATES A roommate relationship is more than just a living arrangement; roommates can have emotional and financial effects on each others’ lives. Choose a roommate wisely, and communicate frequently to work out problems. To make sure your living situation is a comfortable environment, you should have open discussions with anyone you are interested in living with before signing a lease.
FINDING A ROOMMATE Off-Campus Housing (OCH) offers a free roommate matching service on our website, offcampus.arizona.edu, just for University of Arizona students. The software uses a questionnaire to help match you with potential roommates. You will be required to log in with your UA NetID and password for safety reasons.
POTENTIAL ROOMMATE QUESTIONNAIRE To help you find a compatible roommate, OCH also offers a Potential Roommate Questionnaire, which can be found on the website.

ROOMMATE CONTRACT The OCH website also offers a Roommate Contract that can help document the details you and your roommates have agreed upon. The contract requires each roommate’s signature to acknowledge the agreement. Some of the items you will find in the Roommate Contract include:

SHARED BELONGINGS
How often should the place be cleaned, and how will the work be shared?
How much privacy does everyone want, and where do you get it?
Will food, clothing, DVDs, toothpaste, and other belongings be shared?
GUESTS Will overnight guests be allowed? When and how often can guests visit? What is the maximum number of guests?

How often can parties occur? How many people can be in attendance? How late can parties run?

SHARING BILLS Typically, you will be sharing bills for utilities and other expenses with roommates.
WE SUGGEST: • When possible, put all the roommates’ names on the bill(s). This will make you mutually responsible. • Determine who will be responsible for paying which bill(s) and how much each roommate will contribute. Put this in writing and have all the roommates sign off on it. • Save your billing statements in case there are any questions or concerns. • Pay your bills on time. You don’t want to have to pay a late fee or have your credit rating affected.

ROOMMATE PROBLEMS If you have a roommate conflict, try to handle it before it gets worse. For minor problems, talk with your roommate. Listen to the other person’s side, and work together to come up with a solution. If needed, put it in writing. If your landlord assigned your roommate, you can ask your landlord for help. If the problem escalates, the UA Dean of Students office offers a roommate mediation service at (520) 621-7057.
MEDIATION IS: • Informal, private, peaceful, confidential, and cannot be used in court according to state law • Impartial and seeks to help you explore and evaluate your options • Designed to help you find different ways to have your needs met
TIP: If you are having roommate issues, talk about it before it becomes a big deal. If you have legal questions, call Student Legal Services at (520) 621-2782. If you need roommate mediation services, call Dean of Students office at (520) 621-7057.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR • Get to know your neighbor(s) • Be mindful of noise levels • Keep the property clean • Be respectful
• Remember your neighbor(s) may not be students; they may have small children or work schedules that require quiet hours • Be informed of the neighborhood & city guidelines and services
• Be courteous about parking
BE A GOOD TENANT • Get to know your landlord • Pay your rent on time. If for some reason you can’t, let the landlord know ahead of time. He or she may be flexible • Keep records of all transactions & requests that have been exchanged between you and your landlord
• If anything needs to be repaired, notify the landlord as soon as possible • Don’t leave trash laying around. Put it in the designated areas • Respect the property • Obey the property rules

RED TAGGING WE ALL LIKE TO HAVE FUN! Having people over to your place is typically a part of university life, but remember to keep it under control. The last thing you want is for the party to get out of control.
HOW DO YOU GET RED TAGGED? A red tag results from the violation of the City of Tucson’s Unruly Gathering Ordinance. Loud or unruly gatherings are unlawful and constitute a civil infraction. The law can found on the City of Tucson’s website under City Code, Unruly Gatherings.
WHAT IS AN UNRULY GATHERING? The ordinance defines it as “a gathering of five (5) or more persons on any private property in a manner which causes a disturbance”. Disturbances include, but are not limited to: • Obstruction of public streets by crowds or vehicles
• Consumption of alcohol by minors • Fighting
• Excessive noise or traffic
• Disturbing the peace
• Drinking in public
• Littering
• Service of alcohol to minors

THINK IT’S NO BIG DEAL? The Tucson Police Department has agreed to forward red tag reports to the University of Arizona Dean of Students office. The reports will be reviewed to determine if: • The host(s) of the party is a University of Arizona student • Other University of Arizona students attended the party • There is a clear nexus to the university
Generally, state universities cannot discipline off-campus behavior merely because a person is a student. Instead, there must be a clear “nexus” between the misconduct and the health, safety, or academic integrity of the campus itself. A nexus is present when there is sale or distribution of illegal drugs or controlled substances, violence, or underage service of alcohol at an off-campus party hosted by a university student.
