ONE DAY EXPERIENCE LIFETIME IMPACT By Sara Nixon-Kirschner Industry Program Manager, Student Engagement & Career Development

Growing up is a constant evolution, and the same can be said of our hopes and dreams. When it comes to career, how many of us declared early on that we would be a veterinarian, or a fire fighter, or an architect? Most of us have made and revised such career proclamations many times over, starting as soon as we learned to talk and stretching right up through the present day. But the “you” of kindergarten or middle school or even yesterday is not necessarily the “you” of today. Realizing what you love to learn, do, and become over your lifetime is ideally what you came to college to find out, right? With these truths in mind, we created the UA Job Shadow Program to deliver real-life career exploration experiences to as many Wildcats as possible. So, what, exactly, is a job shadow? It’s a one-day, professional experience where you get to spend time at and soak up the realities of a workplace and the roles within it. Because of our wide network of alumni and friends, we offer shadows throughout Arizona and across the country. The shadow opportunity is free to UA students, though travel and transportation is entirely up to you. Each employer offers a different, custom experience, depending on the role of the host and the vibe and environment of the company. But every single shadow promises that you get real-time, real-world insight into your career learning and desires. With only a year of the program under our belt, we have already witnessed huge revelations from participating students of all backgrounds and passions. “I learned so much about the city and about city issues in the span of a day. The experience was very personable and interesting,” freshman, Political Science Major (Shadowed with Office of Tucson City Councilwoman Regina Romero)

JASMIN FRALEY AT HER JOB SHADOW AT THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE, SUMMER 2019

Students seeking liberal arts degrees have discovered future possibilities in tech, public policy, and healthcare. “Our host was incredible. He was patient and answered all of our questions, every activity was completely organized and curated for our interests. He made me feel very welcomed and motivated to learn about this

field,” senior, Studio Art Major (Shadowed with City of Mesa Forensics) While other students go into the shadow knowing just what they want to do and walk away from the day even more certain of a life path. Equally as remarkable and important are those students who thought they wanted to pursue medicine, or real estate, or entertainment, only to de-

finitively decide that it’s surprisingly not the right world for them. “In one day, I learned that I wanted to change my career path, and how to stand out as an applicant,” sophomore, Pre-Neuroscience & Cognitive Science Major In every case, the job shadow experience is a day extremely well spent. We want nothing more than for UA students to find clarity and purpose. Year-round, we work with valued employers and alumni to create opportunities for UA students of all majors and years to explore careers and industries during spring, summer, and winter Breaks. We strive to provide exposure to greatly varied jobs, companies, and fields, and to match and place students who express true interest and excitement for the chance to shadow, Your next chance is right around the corner: Applications for Summer Break shadows open on October 21st on Handshake. If you have even one day available for career exploration between January 2-14, don’t miss this chance! We can’t wait to receive your application, and hopefully nudge you a little bit closer to discovering—or confirming—a career you love. CV’S VERSUS RESUMES: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? As a graduate student you most likely have some form of a resume or curriculum vitae (CV), and have grasped the notion that these documents are important marketing tools you use to sell yourself. It is important to note that both resumes and CV’s are living documents, meaning that you should constantly be updating them.

Important: A resume or CV is never completed, it just changes and adapts to your needs.

Resumes and CV’s are not the same thing. CV’s are typically used for academic positions, scientific and research jobs, tenure reviews, and grants and fellowships. A CV is much longer in length and consists of anything worthwhile you have done that pertains generally to the subject you are using the document for. Resumes are shorter than CV’s. Most resumes are one page, but graduate students who have more experiences and skills may have two pages. Resumes create an instant impression of you. Employers only take

a few seconds to read over resumes so put the most important material on the top of the first page and highlight it. Some graduate students may choose to have a functional resume if their experience is different from work they are applying for. However, most graduate students still have chronological resumes where experiences are highlighted from the most recent to past relevant experiences. A resume is not a place to put down everything you have ever done. Keep it relevant, simple and make sure to sell yourself.

GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICATION CHALLENGE: THE PERSONAL STATEMENT By Nura Dualeh, Director, Undergraduate Research and Graduate Preparation Programs

The personal statement is one of the most important elements of your graduate school application, but the quality of the document is completely within your control. The personal statement is where you tell your story. You have the chance to explain why you are a great fit for the program, so be prepared to draft and re-draft this critical document. Give yourself plenty of time to brainstorm, write, and edit.

edit the statement or get feedback until you have a first draft, so write a first draft as early as possible and have others review it.

How to Get Started

The best way to get started is by brainstorming your answers to the above three questions. Be sure to write everything down that comes up. Resist editing yourself. The important part of the process is to write! You can finesse your answers later. Below are some additional prompts to help you answer those questions.

Are You? What is a personal statement? Who > What does a graduate school need

While some graduate programs may provide specific prompts for the personal statement, it generally answers three broad questions.

1. Who are you? 2. What is your history? Focus on your academic or professional history relating to this field. 3. Why are you a good fit for the program? What will you do with your degree?

Your first draft can be as long and messy as you need it to be. You can’t

to know about you? This should be information that makes you uniquely interesting. If you desire to explain a low entrance exam score or poor semester GPA, make note of that.

What is your history?

> Think about 3-4 academic experiences or courses that are most relevant to the graduate programs you’re applying to. For each experience, write a few words that will help you remember a specific story or example of why this part of your “history” is

important. Examples of stories could be a problem you solved, discovery you made, failure you learned from, someone you helped, something you created, an influential reading, an impactful assignment, and so on.

Why is this an excellent fit?

> Your brainstorming and answer to this question will be different for each program. Think about faculty at the program, specialties, research opportunities, location—anything relating to your fit and match. Is there anything specific you want to do at this program?

Once it’s written, what’s next?

It’s not always easy showing other people our work, but it’s important to get feedback. Consider the different feedback you will need, including writing and grammar, and the perspective of those in the field. For example: 1. Take your personal statement to the Writing Center at Think Tank. Ask for help with proper writing techniques or editing down your draft. 2. Show your statement to a faculty member who is in the field you wish to enter,

including those you might ask for a letter of recommendation. Ask for feedback on whether your statement is compelling, and what content might be better if changed. 3. Ask for feedback from professionals in the field on how your statement represents your ability and fit for the field.

Remember, when you ask for feedback, let the person know what they are looking for. Only ask people whose opinions and expertise are valid! Your aunt may be a brilliant journalist who can help you make your statement more compelling, but she probably is not qualified to review your personal statement for relevance to the field. Always proofread, and proofread again. In the end, your personal statement is an academic piece of writing and the final version should be free of errors and contractions. IS GRAD SCHOOL THE RIGHT OPTION? By Nancy J. Stiller, Ph.D From the archives (but still pertinent!)

some current graduate students to understand the very real differences between undergraduate and graduate education. So, what are some right reasons for attending grad school? Do you have a real passion for learning? Are you the kind of student who reads more than what is required? Graduate school demands that you “go above and beyond” as a student. Most programs require that you maintain a GPA above a 3.0 so anything less than an all out effort will be insufficient. If intellectual pursuit does not inspire you, then grad school might not be for you. Some careers such as university teaching, law, medicine and counseling, to name a few, require an advanced degree to enter the profession. If you aspire to one of those professions, more school is definitely in your future. If you already have significant work experience, advancing in a career might require a Master’s degree. For example, if you are in the

For many, graduate school is an important and necessary step toward the realization of goals and dreams. For others, the choice to apply to grad school is made out of fear of what the “real world of work” might bring. Thinking about life after the UA can be daunting, but finding yourself in a graduate program that is not right for you can be costly, frustrating, and even damaging to your future aspirations. As soon-to-be alumni, you are at a crossroads. Determining which way to turn requires that you honestly assess your interests, skills, and goals, but, first, ask yourself this question. Am I considering going to grad school for the “right reasons?” Pursuing an advanced degree requires commitment and a sense of purpose. If your reason for considering the grad school option has more to do with enjoying your “student lifestyle” or postponing adulthood, consider talking with

business world and you’re interested in management, an MBA might help you reach your goal. Or, an advanced degree in education might provide you with teaching credentials or opportunities in school administration. If your career direction does not seem fairly certain, then grad school might not be the best option, right now. Once you have established that you are a dedicated learner and that your reason for applying to grad school is connected to your career goals, there are other questions to ask yourself such as: > Am I academically prepared? In terms of GPA, am I a competitive applicant? > Do I have a plan to prepare for admissions tests such as the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)? > What impact will attending grad school have on me, financially? > Have I participated in research opportunities, internships, preceptorships or other “experiential” activi-

ties that strengthen my application to a graduate program? > Have I made connections with faculty members and others who can write letters of recommendation on my behalf? > Am I ready to make school my “number one priority” so I can commit to long hours of reading, writing and preparing for teaching, research, clinical or other graduate level experiences?

Once you have assessed your reasons for wanting to start the grad school application process, talk to professors, advisors, and career counselors about your decision. Use the Internet to find out about specific graduate programs in your area of interest. Ask professionals about their own educational and career paths to learn how they succeeded in meeting their goals. Understand the career possibilities that come after you complete your degree program. Gather as much information as you can so you know that the grad school option is the right option for you.
