a letter from the ecmc board Dear Friends, Welcome to Merry Gentlemen, the 2016 holiday presentation of Empire City Men’s Chorus. Tonight we are especially excited for you to hear the famed Gloria in D Major by Antonio Vivaldi, masterfully re-arranged for men’s voices by our acclaimed Artistic Director, Vince Peterson. Vince and the ECMC leadership work continually to develop and bring to life concert programs which form lasting musical experiences between singers and listeners. This unique presentation of Vivaldi doesn’t fall short, and we are humbled to have you experiencing it with us tonight. We are further humbled by the successes of our last season, where we introduced our first Composer-in-Residence, our first Assistant Director, our first ensemble, and even more! Your support via event attendance, tax-deductible donations, and volunteerism were unprecedented and invaluable in bringing those artistic dreams to life. In fact, our artistic budget has nearly doubled over the last 3 years! Thank you, again, for being such a supportive audience. As we usher in our next season, we’re overjoyed to announce another “ECMC first”— recording and cataloguing the TTBB works of the late 20th-century composer Conrad Susa! We will also be the first chorus to record these works of a modern composer who we see as vibrant and relevant to the musical landscape. More details over the coming months, so please stay tuned! Of course we cannot make these events possible without your continued support. We hope you recognize that your contributions directly enable our ability to invigorate and present exceptional choral music as a 501(3)c non-profit arts organization in New York. Please consider donating any time on the web at http://www.empirecitymenschorus.org. Lastly, as President I would like to offer a very big, personal thanks to the unceasing dedication of our operational and artistic leadership. I am immeasurably proud and thankful for all that I am able to do with these most excellent and Merry Gentlemen, and I hope that you, the audience, will be right there with us as we continue our musical journey. Sincerely, Scott Michael Brown, Board President Westley Todd Holiday, Vice President, Co-Chair of Development Benjamin Donahoo, Treasurer Edward Enrique, Director, Co-Chair of Marketing Eric Pulsipher, Director, Chair of Grants Rodrigo Bolaños, Director 4

note from the artistic director Dear Friends, Happy Holidays from ECMC! This is one of our favorite events of the year and we hope that it is for you too. I’ve been thinking a lot about the specific privilege of making music together exclusively with men. Those of you who know me well enough know that I am the director of five different choruses. It sounds like a lot of work, but there is a legitimate reason why I am able to handle it. First of all, I have incredible artists around me helping me every step of the way; but, more than that, all of the groups that I direct are different from each other. They all have different profiles. This one is just men; men who volunteer their time every Tuesday to get together and use their voices to make something beautiful happen in the world. There is a strong sense of fraternity in this - and Lord knows we need that right about now! For these men, singing together is not just a serious hobby or glorified pastime. For them, it’s a vocation of sorts. Despite differences in backgrounds, opinions, ages, aesthetics, or symantics, when these guys start singing at the same time in the same room, magic happens. The clock is turned back. Time stands still for a moment and we all understand what it is like to just “be.” I want the men of ECMC to always be Gentlemen. I want them to carry this posture with them even after they leave the rehearsals and the concerts. I want men everywhere to return to the art of masculinity and to the art of being Gentlemen. If music can evoke this and make it real - even for just a moment in time - then I will always have a reason to get out of my bed in the morning, no matter what happens on this earth. There is a lot to be learned from men who are Gentle. We used the incredible Fred Astaire in the graphic for this concert because, whether or not he always succeeded in his personal life at being a good man, when he performed, he was received and felt as the quintessential Gentleman - to be an example for generations to come of how to embody the sheer joy to be had in life. What better time of year than the holidays to exude joy and merriment? The men of ECMC and our whole family of wonderful volunteers wish you and yours the happiest of holidays and the best of everything to come in the new year. Thank you for being with us tonight. Vince Peterson, Artistic Director 5

Founded in 1993, the Empire City Men’s Chorus celebrates its 23rd year of performances in New York City. ECMC was initially formed by members of the gay community who were interested in creating a male chorus featuring an eclectic multilingual repertoire of predominately classical music. For the past 23 years, the ECMC has consistently presented concerts that boast a wide variety of well-known composers and newly commissioned works with a classical sensibility. Prior to Vince Peterson’s appointment as Artistic Director in the fall of 2014, ECMC has been led under the esteemed batons of Matthew D. Oltman, Christopher Clowdus, Jonathan Babcock, and Donald Messer. Over a relatively short period of time, the ECMC has established an impressive musical history, having performed in some of New York’s most historic spaces. The ECMC has performed for the United Nations Secretary General’s Campaign UNiTE to End Violence Against Women, in Manhattan at Merkin Hall, Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Saint Bartholomew’s Church, The Cathedral of St. John the Divine and many other churches. Our guest performers have included opera stars Stephanie Blythe and Margaret Lattimore, Tony Award winning Victoria Clark, and Tony Award - and Drama Desk - nominee Barbara Walsh. Highlights of our seasons include a gala 10th Anniversary concert featuring world premieres of works by 2004 Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec and Adam Silverman, and a jointly produced concert with The Astoria Symphony which included performances of the Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody, and the performance of Arnold Schönberg’s A Survivor in Warsaw. The ECMC produces at least two major concerts per season. The group has received grants from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and is a member of Chorus America and the New York City Choral Consortium. Our members meet seasonally on a weekly basis, and we frequently post upcoming auditions on our web site. We are a diverse group and open to men whose musical talents and spirit embellish the current strengths of our chorus members. 6

Lyrics and Translations O Magnum Mysterium

Plainchant from the Liber Usualis (circa 13th century) O magnum mysterium, et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in praesepio! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. Alleluia.

O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord, lying in a manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear Christ the Lord. Alleluia!

Hodie Christus Natus Est Luca Marenzio (1553-1599) Hodie Christus natus est, Noe. Hodie Salvator apparuit, Alleluia. Hodie in terra canunt Angeli, laetantur Archangeli; Noe. Hodie exsultant justi, dicentes: Gloria in excelsis Deo. Alleluia.

Today Christ is born, Noel! Today the Savior appeared, Alleluia. Today on Earth the Angels sing, Archangels rejoice; Noel. Today the righteous rejoice, saying: Glory to God in the highest. Alleluia.

O Holy Night Adolphe Charles Adam (1803-1856) arr. Scott M. Hyslop (b. 1961) O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night Divine. Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from the Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, to our weaknesses no stranger, Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend! 9

Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and his gospel is peace. Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother; And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we. His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim. His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen Traditional arr. Kelly J. Turner God rest ye merry, gentlemen Let nothing you dismay. Remember, Christ, our Saviour, Was born on Christmas day To save us all from Satan’s power When we were gone astray. O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy From God our Heavenly Father A blessed Angel came; And unto certain Shepherds Brought tidings of the same: How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by Name. O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. And when they came to Bethlehem Where our dear Saviour lay, They found Him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His Mother Mary kneeling down, Unto the Lord did pray. O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. (Continued on next page)

10

Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood, Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All other doth deface. O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

Lo V’chayil Elliot Z. Levine (b. 1948) Lo v’chayil v’lo v’choach, Ki im b’ruchi amar Adonai tz’va ot. Not by might nor by power, But by My Spirit, Saith the Lord of Hosts.

Nada te turbe Joan Szymko (b. 1957) Nada te turbe Nada te espante Todo se pasa Dios no se muda. La paciencia todo alcanza. Quien a Dios tiene Nada le falta Solo Dios basta.

Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, All things are passing. God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing. God is enough.

Pat-a-pan David Conte (b. 1955) (Traditional French Burgundian Carol) Willie, bring your little drum; Robin, bring your flute and come; And be merry while you play; Tu-re-lu-re-lu, Pat-a-pan-a-pan, Come be merry while you play, On this joyful Christmas day! (Continued on next page)

11

When the men of olden days To the King of Kings gave praise, On the fife and drum did play, Tu-re-lu-re-lu, Pat-a-pan-a-pan, On the fife and drum did play, On this joyful Christmas day! God and man today become More in tune than fife and drum, So be merry while you play, Tu-re-lu-re-lu, Pat-a-pan-a-pan, So be merry while you play, Sing and dance this Christmas day!

Ave Maria

Franz Biebl (1906-2001) Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae et concepit de Spiritu sancto.

The angel of God visited Maria and she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.

Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Maria dixit: Ecce ancilla Domini. Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.

Maria said: See the servant of the Lord. May it happen to me according to your word.

Gloria RV 589 Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678-1741) Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, We worship thee, we glorify thee, We give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, That takest away the sins of the world, Have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, Receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, Have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; Thou only, O Christ, With the Holy Ghost, Art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Gloria in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Iesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, Miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, Suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, Miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus, Iesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu, In gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

White Christmas Irving Berlin (1888-1989) arr. Kirby Shaw (b. 1941) The sun is shining, the grass is green, The orange and palm trees sway. There’s never been such a day In Beverly Hills, L.A. But it’s December the twenty-fourth And I’m longing to be up North. I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know, Where the treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow. (Continued on next page) 13

Oh I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow. I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, with every Christmas card I write, “May your days be merry and bright, and may all your Christmases be white.”

Angels We Have Heard On High Traditional Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plain. And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strain: Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be? Which inspire your heavenly songs? Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Come to Bethlehem and see Christ Whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ, the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Do You Hear What I Hear? Gloria Shayne Baker (1923-2008) and Noël Regney (1922-2002) Said the night wind to the little lamb, “Do you see what I see? Way up in the sky, little lamb, Do you see what I see? (Continued on next page)

14

A star, a star, dancing in the night With a tail as big as a kite, With a tail as big as a kite.” Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy, “Do you hear what I hear? Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy, Do you hear what I hear? A song, a song high above the trees With a voice as big as the sea, With a voice as big as the sea.” Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king, “Do you know what I know? In your palace walls, mighty king, Do you know what I know? A Child, a Child shivers in the cold-Let us bring him silver and gold, Let us bring him silver and gold.” Said the king to the people everywhere, “Listen to what I say! Pray for peace, people, everywhere, Listen to what I say! The Child, the Child sleeping in the night He will bring us goodness and light, He will bring us goodness and light.

Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town John Frederick Coots (1897-1985) Haven Gillespie (1888-1975) You better watch out. You better not cry. Better not pout, I’m telling you why. Santa Claus is comin’ to town. He’s making a list and checking it twice, Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice. Santa Claus is comin’ to town. He sees you when you’re sleepin’. He knows when you’re a wake. He knows if you’ve been bad or good, So be good for goodness sake. Oh! You better watch out. You better not cry. Better not pout, I’m telling you why. Santa Claus is comin’ to town.

With little tin horns and little toy drums, Rooty toot toots and rummy tum tums, Santa Claus is comin’ to town. And curly head dolls that toddle and coo, Elephants, boats, and kiddie cars too, Santa Claus is comin’ to town. The kids in Girl and Boy land will have a jubilee. They’re gonna build a Toyland Town all around the Christmas tree. So! You better watch out. You better not cry. Better not pout, I’m telling you why. Santa Claus is comin’ to town.

Carry Me on My Way James Taylor (b. 1948) I forget what to ask for There isn’t anything I haven’t been given How could I wish for anything more As I am here living in heaven This moment in the sun To feel the wheel turning on Carry me on my way Carry me on my way Carry me on my way Carry me on my way I worry about my actions I think about the damage I do I’ve seen the coming attractions Armageddon and Waterloo I tried to change my mind I wasted precious time (chorus) Who knows where the time goes Only everything is everything Feels like I’m wearing my father’s clothes Singing a song my brother would sing I turned to hide my face They’re gone without a trace (chorus)

Have Yourself a Merry Christmas Hugh Martin (1914-2011) and Ralph Blane (1914-1995) Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Let your heart be light. From now on, our troubles Will be out of sight. Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Make the Yuletide gay. From now on, our troubles Will be miles away. Once again as in olden days Happy golden days of yore, Faithful friends who are dear to us Will be near to us, once more. Through the years we all will be together If the fates allow Until then, we’ll have to muddle through somehow. Hang a shining star upon the highest bough, And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.
