The United States of America Also known as The “USA”, the “US”, the “States”or “America”



Canada is north of the United States. Mexico is south of the United States


What is the USA known for? The USA is the home of: Hollywood, Star wars, Marilyn Monroe, American Football, Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson, etc.


Composition The United States of America is composed of 50 states.


Territories of the USA ò  The USA has 16 territories that are regions under the jurisdiction of the US government. Territories include Guam, Puerto Rico and The U.S. Virgin Islands.


The capital of The USA ò  Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) is the capital of the USA. It is not part of any state, it is its own district.


Washington D.C. is home to the White House.


The flag has 13 red and white horizontal stripes.

The Flag

It started with 13 stars (for the 13 first colonies) but‌ as states were added, more stars were added to the flag too. TODAY the flag has a blue rectangle with 50 white stars. The 50 stars represent the 50 states and the 13 stripes represent the 13 colonies that became the first states.

The Bald Eagle The bald eagle was chosen as the national emblem in June 20, 1782. It was chosen for its majestic looks, strength, and long life span.


The Statue of Liberty It was a gift from France. The female figure is Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. It is on Liberty Island in New York City.


The Liberty Bell The bell was used to summon lawmakers and townspeople to meetings. It is a symbol of freedom. It is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.


Uncle Sam Uncle Sam is the national personification of US government. He was a symbol used during war time to recruit soldiers.


The national currency is the U.S. dollar


Facts ò  Alaska is the largest state in the USA. ò  Rhode Island is the smallest state in the USA. ò  California is the most populated state in the USA.


Each state has their own unique flag.


Each state has it’s own capital city, state bird, flower and nickname. Wisconsin, for example: ò  The capital of Wisconsin is Madison ò  The state bird of Wisconsin is the Robin. ò  The state animal is the badger. ò  Wisconsin is knows as “The Dairy State.”

Languages

The USA does not have an official language as a country. 28 states have English as their official language. Spanish is the second most spoken language.
