Don Gil of the Green Breeches A delight. Don Gil is a farce that makes other plays of the genre look positively staid; the plots and subplots zip along at breakneck speed, and the production is uproariously funny under Mehmet Ergen’s faultless direction – Bath Chronicle

A Lady of Little Sense Wonderfully lively... David Johnston’s zippy new translation... A stunning song-and-dance set-piece helps to establish a magical mood – The Times

Guitarist Maria Camahort presents a series of evening performances with music created in Spain: classical works created by Spanish composers together with traditional music from many different regions of the country, from North to South. Admission is free but booking is essential due to limited capacity

14 February and 10 March 6 – 7pm £25 including a Spanish Golden Age performance ticket

Join us at the Instituto Cervantes for an opportunity to hear from the directors of the season in conversation with Dr. Rodrigo Cacho, a Spanish Golden Age expert from Cambridge University. The discussion will focus on the Spanish Golden Age of Theatre within the context of staging productions for today’s theatre audiences. It will also give insight into the Spanish Golden Age of Theatre and Art in general and explore the choices, decisions and discoveries made by the directors, actors and creatives putting the season together.

The fan holds a unique place in Spanish culture, not just for its decorative use, but also for its fascinating method of communication. We will be hosting fan making workshops led by Almudena Adalia Calvo, giving participants the opportunity to make beautiful handmade fans and to learn how to communicate through traditional gestures and movement.

We will be screening a selection of Spanish films ranging from well-loved classics to epic blockbusters and arthouse Spanish cinema. On the 23 February will be Anducha Waddington’s Lope (2010), followed on 2 March by two Luis Buñuel greats; Diary of a Chambermaid and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Victor Erice’s masterpiece, The Spirit of the Beehive (1974), will be shown on 9 March. Finally, on 16 March is Pedro Almodovar’s classic, Volver (2006), starring Penelope Cruz. These films will prepare you for the soaring emotions and flamboyant comedy of the Spanish Golden Age.

Modern Spanish Plays 23 February – 6pm & 8pm 2, 9 March – 4pm & 6.30pm £10 (£8 concessions) or £16 for both Directed by Natalie Katsou

Bazaar Written by David Planell Translated by John Clifford This darkly comic tale focuses on a group of ethnically diverse characters and their attempt to get an accident video shown on a You’ve Been Framed style TV programme. Alongside the hilarity of this absurd operation, the play exposes undercurrents of racism beginning to surface in Madrid, and challenges conventional notions of individual and national identity.

Wolf Kisses Written by Paloma Pedrero Translated by Roxana Silbert Making its British premiere, Wolf Kisses is a dreamlike tale which follows the story of Ana, a young woman who returns to her rural town and awaits her distant lover. Family secrets, past friendships and love interests are unearthed, while Ana holds on to the hope that her lover will return. Is making one’s own world up enough to shut nightmares out?
