The Archmerean Celebrating 40 Years of Coeducation

Volume LXXXII Fall 2015

The Archmerean

“Celebrating 40 Years of Coeducation” In 1975, Archmere Academy made the decision to open its doors to female students and has been better for it ever since. The cover of this issue depicts the four classes present during the 1975-1976 school year. The freshman class is shown at the bottom with the sophomores above them. The junior class was expressed over three different photos and the seniors are represented by their proud display of school spirit. Looking at the photos we can see the very beginnings of coeducation at Archmere with young men and women intermingling seamlessly with one another. New doors and opportunities were open for not just the arriving girls but all Archmere students. Join us this year as we celebrate members of the Archmere Academy community who have made not only coeducation possible, but who have improved the school for future generations.

A Message From the Headmaster

A Community of Families Dear Members of the Archmere Community, Archmere Academy is a community of families that has provided a rich and formative environment for children to grow and learn. Issues of the Archmerean, including this one, the school’s website, and other communications are “windows” that attempt to provide insightful views of this community growing, changing, and constantly becoming. Shortly before the release of this issue of our school magazine, the World Meeting of Families Congress met in Philadelphia, September 22-25, 2015, concluding with the Papal Visit of Pope Francis on September 26-27, 2015. The theme of the Congress is “Love is Our Mission: The Family fully alive.” This event is the world’s largest gathering of Catholic families, and is held every three years, sponsored by the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for the Family. Photo by Erin McNichol ’92 Follow Dr. Marinelli’s blog at: http://blogsandpubs.archmereacademy. com/headmaster/

This year’s gathering emphasized the impact of the love and life of families on our society. Vatican II refers to the family as the “domestic church,” an Ecclesia domestica, such that parents, by word and example, have the important responsibility to teach the faith to their children.

Citing from the catechesis materials provided on the event’s web site, “Children shape the future, just as they themselves are shaped in their families. Without children, there can be no future. Children reared with love and guidance are the foundation for a loving future” (p.49). We are so very fortunate to be able to work together with so many wonderful families who support the mission and values of Archmere Academy, thereby reinforcing family values in the larger school community, creating in many ways what feels like an extended family. And this extended family of teachers, staff, parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends who come together to support the development of our young people epitomizes the statement in the catechetical document, “The family is most fully alive when we embrace God’s invitation to be the sons and daughters he created us to be” (19 p.22). Hopefully, the Archmere experience helps our students to begin to discern the lives they will be asked to lead, acknowledging, 4

“The gift of our existence precedes and shapes what we do and how we live. In short, God’s way of loving becomes the measure of human love.” (17, 23). “To live this way requires humility. It requires us to conform our hearts to God and see the world through his eyes. God’s way is a better way, but not always the easier way” (22, 23 p.25). In these Archmerean pages we gratefully acknowledge those who have supported our efforts with gifts to the Archmere Fund and other annual gifts of support given to Archmere and to our parent and alumni sponsored events. We could not provide all of the resources to our students with revenue from tuition alone; annual contributions are a critical component in managing the level of tuition. This issue also celebrates forty years of coeducation at Archmere, with the arrival of girls in the fall of 1975. Joining us in our senior year, Geralyn Savini Williams ’76 was the first female graduate and the only female in the class, although other girls had enrolled in the other three classes, so that quickly by the time the Class of 1979 was graduated – the first four year coeducational class – the Academy was well on its way to an enrollment fairly balanced between boys and girls. Over the next year, we hope to present to you interesting programs and information reflecting on and celebrating the last forty years of coeducation. Each year it is impressive to read the names of our graduates and all of the colleges and universities to which they have been accepted, in addition to their awards, honors, and scholarships received. The Class of 2015 list is no exception and we wish them well as they “become the sons and daughters God created them to be.” At this year’s Commencement ceremonies, Mr. Donn Devine ’46, father of Martin ’74, and grandfather of Joseph ’04, Patrick ’10, Sean ’15 and Michael Devine ’18, received the Alumnus of the Year Award in recognition of an amazing life of accomplishment and service to his country, community, and Church. He accepted the award with his usual sense of humility, continuing to be a role model for all of us of God’s love in action in the world. After the Baccalaureate Mass, we held a beautiful reception for the graduates and their families in the Patio, a place that continues to be an important home for so many activities and for so many of us. Just a short week later, the Patio was the site of a reception after the funeral Mass for Beau Biden ’87. And later in June, we received at the Patio the body of Vincent Filliben ’47, long time mathematics teacher, coach, and athletic director of Archmere Academy for his viewing, followed by his funeral and reception on campus the next day. I believe that John and

mansion we now call “The Patio” at Archmere would be pleased that the home they created for themselves and their 13 children continues to welcome guests for many occasions. Mrs. Raskob, in the last lines she wrote in her Raskob-Green Record Book are, “And so ‘Archmere’ now is a beautiful dream come true. But the greatest charm, aside from the voices of the children, is the homelike spirit, which has been fostered within its walls. I value the delicious home feeling as one of the choicest gifts a parent can bestow.” Pope Francis, as he was baptizing 32 babies, remarked, “These children are

2015 Alumnus of the Year Donn Devine ’46 During the 2015 commencement exercises for Archmere Academy, alumnus Donn Devine ’46 received the Alumnus of the Year Award. Born and raised in Wilmington, Donn attended Christ Our King Parochial School and won a competitive 4-year scholarship to Archmere, entering its doors in 1942 during the World War II years. During his time at Archmere he was a photographer for the yearbook and staff member of the Green Arch. As a member of the debating team, Donn met students of other area schools, some of whom remained lifelong friends. Extra-curricular activities were limited due to wartime gas rations, but this alumnus served on the Junior Prom Committee and, back when the Patio ceiling still opened, he recalls promoting the event as “dancing under the stars.” As the American Legion Boys State Representative, Donn remembers car-pooling to the one-day session in Dover, and returning with a legislative lobbyist whose accounts of how the legislative process actually worked at the time. This sparked his later interest in politics.

Donn Devine ’46

Graduating from Archmere as Valedictorian of the class of 1946, Donn went on to the University of Delaware where he graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in chemistry, and began a varied career that has allowed he and his wife of 64 years to remain in Wilmington ever since. Starting as a development chemist at the Baker and Adamson Works of Allied Chemical Corporation in Marcus Hook, Donn soon shifted to opportunities in journalism at the Wilmington Sunday Star, Philadelphia Bulletin, and Atlas Powder Company before starting on his own as a public relations and management consultant, while completing additional formal schooling at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Donn served as president of the Catholic Interracial Council of Wilmington during the height of its activity in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, and with other Council members participated in the Rev. Martin Luther King’s civil rights marches in Washington, D.C., and Montgomery, Alabama.

In 1968, he joined the City of Wilmington Planning Department as a planner, retiring as its director in 1985. He also attended the Delaware Law School of Widener University in its opening class, and was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1975.

From 1950 to 1984, he served as a U.S. Army Reserve enlistee and Delaware Army National Guard officer, advancing to the grade of colonel, and promotion to brigadier general upon his retirement in 1984. Donn has been honored by the State of Delaware with two awards of the Conspicuous Service Cross, the state’s highest military decoration. From 1985 to 2012, Donn practiced law in Wilmington, and was a part-time legislative assistant to Wilmington City Council and later “of counsel” in the city’s Law Department. Since 1989 he has also been the part-time archivist of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington. Nationally known for his genealogical research and writing, he holds the Certified Genealogist credential from the Board for Certification of Genealogists, of which he was also a trustee from 1992 to 2006. He served on the board of directors of the National Genealogical Society, and was honored in 2013 by the Society’s award of fellowship, its highest honor, and in 2014 by the Association of Professional Genealogists award of honorary life membership.

To say that the 2015 Alumnus of the Year’s contributions to Archmere as a student, alumnus, parent, and grandparent are significant would be an understatement. Donn’s son Martin ’74, and grandchildren, Joseph ’04, Patrick ’10, Sean ’15, and Michael ’18 have also all walked through Archmere’s doors. With all of his professional degree work, committee experiences, military service, civic involvement, and varied interests, our alumnus always had time to support Archmere as an annual volunteer during the years of the Archmere Annual Giving Phonathon, and as an active participant in class reunions and other special school events. Donn’s unwavering and deep commitment to Archmere over the years serves as an example to us all of true service and devotion to our school’s mission and heritage.

Opportunities to Get Involved Alumni Class Representatives are selected from each graduated class to serve as the link between Archmere and their classmates by helping to communicate what’s happening on campus, promote alumni events, and help Archmere communicate with alumni by updating contact information. Class reps are invited to campus twice a year for a social briefing by school leaders where they have the opportunity to share their questions and/or concerns on behalf of their graduated class. Alumni Committee Members serve as committee volunteers, and have the opportunity to reconnect with long lost friends as well as influence the strategic direction of Archmere’s alumni programming in their specific area of interest. Chaired by an elected member of the Alumni Council, the alumni committees offer multiple ways for alumni to make an impact and get involved: Class Representatives Committee

Professional Development & Networking Committee

Outstanding Seniors - Class of 2015 Valedictorian

Class of 2015 Valedictorian, Raylin Xu “Over the years, we’ve slowly begun to call this place home; a place for us to grow and mature and a place for us to become a family. A couple of days ago, at the retreat, we all agreed sophomore year was a blur. As we grew into overconfident juniors, most of us began driving on our own, enjoying a newfound freedom, but we also took harder classes and nights became longer in the glow of our laptops, especially in the wake of the dreaded junior research paper. And finally, it was our turn to run the school, and run it we did.” In her 2015 valedictory address at commencement, Raylin Xu reflected on her time at Archmere and bid farewell to the place she called her second home. A National AP Raylin Xu ’15 Scholar, Raylin received the French Medal and certificates in Spanish, Math, Science, Music and Athletics at commencement. She was enrolled in thirteen AP courses while successfully balancing her extra curricular activities of Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, the Math League and Academic Bowl, along with her three sports: tennis, swimming and cross country. In addition, she was a member of the Spanish, French, and Science Honor Societies, as well as the National Honor Society. In her spare time, Raylin spent many hours volunteering at both AI DuPont and St. Francis Hospitals. During her valedictory speech, Raylin expressed gratitude toward her parents and teachers, specifically principal John Jordan and campus minister Bill Gabriel, while also mentioning the dedication of Archmere college counselors Catherine Souza and Chris Boehm. “Whether it was repeating over and over how to write in GEA format or how to find sine and cosine, teachers, we thank you for believing in us when we didn’t believe in ourselves and inspiring in us a passion for learning. You’ve opened up doors and opportunities for us to discover our interests, and we

promise to visit next year, hopefully to tell you how prepared we were for college. Over the years, we have developed confidence in our writing and critical thinking skills, and we will be unfazed by that first research paper, biology lab, or all-nighter in college.” For Raylin, it was not the academic challenge and preparation for college that stuck out most to her about her Archmere Academy experience; rather, it was the sense of family. “Over the past four years, we’ve become a family. We’ve all influenced each other, and, my friends, I would wish you all luck in the future, but you won’t need it. In our time at Archmere, we’ve developed into individuals, capable of thinking on our own, taking on responsibility, and challenging ourselves to work hard.” Raylin left her classmates with her favorite piece of advice and powerful closing remarks: “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door. Our perceived limits are constraints entrenched in fear and doubt, but once we overcome that mentality, we can set ourselves up for success. At Archmere, we’ve had great opportunities, and there will be many more in the future, but we have to be able to both recognize and create them for ourselves.”

“Over the years, we have developed confidence in our writing and critical thinking skills, and we will be unfazed by that first research paper, biology lab, or all-nighter in college.” An example of how an Archmere education inspires students to distinction, there is no doubt Raylin will continue to shine in her college career. This fall she is headed to Harvard University and plans on majoring in the Biology field of study - either molecular biology, bioengineering, or neurobiology.

Outstanding Seniors - Class of 2015 Salutatorian

Class of 2015 With faculty, students, family and friends looking on, the 124 members of the Class of 2015 were honored on Sunday, May 31.

Archmere Academy’s Class of 2015 is a group of unique, spirited and talented individuals who have excelled in the classroom, on the stage, in laboratories, and on the playing fields, including this year’s Valedictorian, Raylin Xu ’15, and Salutatorian, Matthew Oslin ’15.

Class of 2015 Salutatorian, Matthew Oslin With his eyes set on Mechanical Engineering, Matt Oslin, Archmere Academy’s 2015 Salutatorian, is looking forward to attending the University of Pennsylvania this fall. Particularly talented at mathematics and science, Matt took thirteen AP classes and was involved in Science Olympiad, Math League, and the Academic Bowl, as well as president of the Robotics Club during his time at Archmere. In addition to his academic commitments, Matt also ran cross country and played tennis. His contributions to the Archmere community were recognized at commencement when Matt received medals in Mathematics and Technology, and certificates in Science, German and Computer Science. Throughout his time at Archmere, Matt always chose to challenge himself – academically, athletically, spiritually and socially. But for Matt, it was not the academic challenge and preparation for college that highlighted his Archmere

“We have shared a great experience, and today we gather to commemorate our journey and look forward together to the future destinations of our community.” Academy experience; rather it was the sense of community. He began his speech by quoting Winston Churchill and saying: “All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word. Community is one such word, and it is fittingly

placed beside respect, zeal, reverence, and wisdom as an Archmere core value.” During his Salutatory speech, Matt expressed sincere gratitude toward the commitment of his teachers, among them his mother, chemistry teacher Sharon Archer. “We have also grown close with our teachers, one of the very special qualities here at Archmere. We have Matthew Oslin ’15 all had the opportunity to befriend and learn from great faculty. In reflecting on our community, I invite everyone here to think of those close to you. Hold these people close, and our community will extend beyond Archmere. I know one of my biggest fears in college will be drifting from those that I love here, but I also know that with effort those bonds will remain strong in new places.” Matt says he is particularly grateful for being prepared for life’s next adventure. In his salutatory speech at commencement, he thanked college counselors Chris Boehm and Catherine Souza, along with many other teachers who inspired and challenged him at Archmere, for all of their hard work and dedication. “Parents, don’t worry, we are ready. We have shared much in four years, and we have all learned from each other. We have shared a great experience, and today we gather to commemorate our journey and look forward together to the future destinations of our community.”

A Reflection on Archmere Rugby Yes, Archmere has a rugby team. And yes, Archmere rugby is currently holding state, regional, and national titles. But where did all of this come from, and why are Archmere students playing a strange European sport for large, sweaty men running around in short shorts? Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States right now, and is making its return to the Olympics next summer. Colleges are beginning to offer rugby scholarships, and the USA Eagles will compete in the World Cup this fall. Most importantly, Archmere students are playing because the game is so much fun, short shorts and all. If you’re reading this, but haven’t had exposure to rugby you may be wondering a bit about the sport and how it works. Start by thinking about football. The object of the game is to move an oblong ball from one end of a field to the other while trying to stop the other team from doing the same by tackling the player with the ball. Unlike football however, there is no forward pass, no blocking, and when a player is tackled, the play does not stop. In our pre-season meeting back in February, the boys and I set some goals for the 2015 season: 1. Start playing fifteens, 2. Win States, 3. Win the Subaru Sevens Regional tourney, 4. Participate in the HSRC National Sevens Championship. For HSRC, that was it, just to participate. The players merely wanted a seat at the national table this year; a chance to test themselves against some of the best high school rugby teams in the nation. What actually happened exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations. We finished our regular season undefeated in sevens and with only two losses in fifteens. The players had developed their skills, built trust in one another and confidence in themselves. They were ready for the post-season, beginning with the State Championship match against Salesianum on May 2nd at Neumann University. We had lost to Salesianum for the State Cup two years in a row, but this time Archmere rugby dominated, winning the match 26-5. The feeling on the field was absolutely electric. There was a sense among the boys, as they looked ahead to the Subaru Sevens regional tournament on May 17th, that another championship was within their grasp. And indeed it was. Archmere rugby once again astonished everyone by winning a tournament that featured top teams from PA, DE, NJ, MD, and NY. We met that week to discuss the end of the season and reviewed our goals. Play fifteens, check. Win States, check. Win Subaru Sevens, check. There was only one left. While it had once been the goal to merely participate in the HSRC national sevens tournament, it now became our goal to win it. After the success we’d seen that season, there was a feeling that Archmere rugby 2015 was an unstoppable force of nature. Between the 17th of May and the 31st, our players worked harder than ever to perfect every minute aspect of their skills and game tactics. That effort paid off when Archmere rugby defeated every team in the HSRC tournament. Malvern (PA), St. Augustine (NJ), Downingtown (PA), Pride (DC), until finally…

The 2015 Rugby Sevens National Champions.

Story by Coach Andrew Cocco ’04 On Sunday May 31st 2015, at about 10:30am, I found myself with my fellow coaches standing on the sideline at PPL Park giving our boys a few final words of encouragement before sending them out to meet a team from Texas called Rock Rugby. We’d seen these guys at the tournament before, but we hadn’t played them yet. We knew they were a big team, and seeing the Auks out there standing opposite them…well it wasn’t quite David and Goliath, but it felt like something close. The game plan was simple; stay off the floor. Don’t get tackled, pass the ball, be patient and wait for an opening. Fifteen minutes later, I found myself with my fellow coaches standing in the middle of PPL Park’s field celebrating the single biggest victory we could possibly imagine. We had just won the HSRC national sevens championship 19-10 over a bigger, more experienced team at the end of what was only our third season of existence. There wasn’t much left to say after that; the boys had poured everything they had into the season and their dedication and effort yielded the ultimate reward. With the advantage of retrospect, I would attribute much of the season’s success to the team coming together this season, and playing selflessly. Both new players and veterans began to develop a deeper understanding of the game and what it meant to work as a team with a singular vision, a shared passion. Through this, they managed to create an exceptional team: an entity that was more than the sum total of its parts and that is something extraordinarily rare to witness. Our challenge now, is to look ahead and see if we can repeat our success. Finally, I do think it’s important to recognize that a team might have a group of talented players, but good coaches bring out and refine that talent. Without question, Archmere rugby has a world-class coaching staff. Current parent David Niumataiwalu, who grew up in Australia and played rugby internationally, has given our players a depth of knowledge and sophisticated understanding of the game rarely seen even at the collegiate level. Biology teacher and football coach, John Bellace offers his expertise in strength conditioning, body mechanics, and mental toughness that are crucial for success in this sport. Current parent, Dr. Matt McIlrath’s experience as a former rugby player himself and his career in sports medicine provides the players with a balance of situational awareness on the field as they learn to listen to their bodies and stay healthy. Our students are lucky to have access to their time, knowledge, and love of the game. 23

Celebrating 40 Years of Coeducation at Archmere

In 1975 coeducation was introduced at the Academy. In September of that year Archmere admitted its first females, 50 altogether in a student body of 372. With proper facilities prepared over the summer for the new co-eds, the change was a smooth one, even though it affected every class. On June 6, 1976, Archmere graduated its first female, Geralyn Savini Green. Geri transferred from Padua Academy to join the all male senior class of 1976. Geri had wanted to attend Archmere for some time. She was able to immediately jump in as the editor for the Green Arch newspaper and was heavily involved with the drama club and student council. While at Archmere, Geri noted that while the boys were boys, they were welcoming of her as an addition to the class. She had a lot of support from the faculty, particularly Father Leonard and Father Kent. The consideration given to admitting girls to Archmere was not new in the mid-70’s. In fact, a decision to “go coed”

had nearly been reached in the late 1960’s but was postponed. At the time, the national demographic trend was toward smaller families, which led to the school age population dropping rather quickly. Like nearly all other private and public schools, Archmere felt the decline. Enrollment, which had been 384 boys in 1970, had slipped to 321 by 1975. However this misfortune turned out to be the very thing which made the admission of girls to the

2014-2015 Honor Roll of Donors

38

Message from the Chair of the Board Gifts of Trustees by Class Dear Friends of Archmere, With great pride and gratitude, I am pleased to present the 2014-2015 Honor Roll of Donors. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I sincerely thank everyone listed in the pages that follow for sharing your time, talent, and resources to contribute to Archmere’s success. Your support is a direct investment in our students.

Mr. John S. Gerard Board Chair

Tuition revenue alone does not allow Archmere to accomplish its mission: cultivating empathetic leaders – young men and women prepared for every good work. The Archmere experience we treasure so dearly depends upon annual giving. Last spring, we had 310 Auk athletes participating in a team sport, 141 students enrolled in our nationally recognized music program, 215 students studying in our award-winning Fine Arts program, and 210 students completing Advanced Placement courses. Your gifts directly support all of these aspects of the Archmere student experience. Our annual giving, especially the Archmere Fund, has increased significantly over the past five fiscal years. Not only have we surpassed our Archmere Fund goals every year, but giving to the Fund has grown 99.7% since the 2010 fiscal year! I am proud to again announce 100% participation by the Board of Trustees and Archmere Faculty and Staff in support of Archmere.

Archmere Fund Giving: 2010-2015 $750,000 $708,877 $700,000 $673,000 $650,000 $600,000

Our achievements are the result of the efforts of many - parents, alumni, trustees, teachers, staff, administrators, and other friends of Archmere. In particular I’d like to thank Debbi Giles Bradford ’84, Richard Sweeny ’83, and Michael Hare ’79 for their tremendous leadership of the Mothers’ Guild, Fathers’ Club, and Alumni Association, which resulted in their most successful fundraising year to date. Thank you! On behalf of the Board of Trustees with gratitude and faithfully in St. Norbert,

John S. Gerard Board Chair 39

Ways to Invest in Archmere Academy Strategic Plan 2012 Focus 5: Financial Sustainability Charitable Gift Planning There are a variety of creative ways to fulfill your philanthropic goals by supporting Archmere Academy. Charitable gift planning enables you to maximize your philanthropic potential, achieve significant tax advantages and even secure lifetime income for you or someone else. You can realize financial benefits today while enriching the lives of others far into the future. We would be happy to work with you and your financial advisor to achieve your charitable goals.

Bequest Giving through your will is the most popular way to make an estate gift and one of the most significant ways donors can benefit Archmere Academy. Through a provision in your written and executed will, you can make a gift in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or personal property. Consider this sample language: I give and devise to Archmere Trust (Tax ID #46-1515121), located in Claymont, DE, all (or state a percentage) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program).

Insurance Do you have a paid whole life policy that you no longer need? Does your employer provide you with life insurance that you haven’t included in your estate plans? Consider gifting the policy to Archmere Academy as the policy’s beneficiary.

Retirement plan assets Tax deferred retirement assets in your 401(k), 403(b) or traditional IRA are great for you and your spouse. Unfortunately, your heirs will never see the full value of what remains. Once these assets pass to someone other than your spouse, the taxes you didn’t pay are due in full—substantially reducing what your heirs receive. Making Archmere the beneficiary will help build our long-term financial strength while also delivering significant tax savings to your heirs.

Charitable Gift Annuities A charitable gift annuity (CGA) is a contract between you and Archmere Academy. You make a gift of a specified amount and we send you a payment each month, quarter or year (your choice) for an amount depending on your age.

Charitable Remainder Trusts You can establish a charitable remainder trust to pay a variable amount (a charitable remainder unitrust) or one that pays you a fixed amount (a charitable remainder annuity trust). At your passing, the trust’s “remainder” goes to Archmere Academy. Remembering Mr. VincentGifts J. Filliben by Class ’47 Mr. Vincent J. Filliben ’47 February 3, 1930 - June 22, 2015 On June 22, longtime member of the Archmere Academy community Mr. Vincent Filliben ’47 passed away peacefully at home with his devoted wife of 59 years, Eleanor, and his family by his side. A 1947 graduate of Archmere Academy, Vince excelled as an athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball. He went on to Drexel University, where he studied commerce and engineering and played both basketball and baseball at the collegiate level. After graduation, he played baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system and then served in the Korean War, stationed in the Far East. His love of sports continued overseas where he played basketball and baseball in the 40th AAA in Japan while serving his country. Vince devoted thirty-nine years of coaching and teaching to Archmere Academy. In addition to teaching Math, Vince coached football, basketball and baseball. He also held the role of Athletic Director from 1963 -1992. Archmere Principal John Jordan ’80, who had Vince for algebra, said, “How he did things worked wonders for me. He was a very structured, very organized guy. He always had a plan. You knew exactly what you were getting, whether it was the classroom or the gym.”

Vincent Filliben ’47 - Senior Portrait

Recognizing his highly successful sports career, Vince was a charter member of the Archmere Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and in in 2010, with more than two hundred of his former players on hand, the basketball/volleyball court inside Archmere’s Moglia Fieldhouse was named the Vincent J. Filliben ’47 Court. Beloved by the many Archmere students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff that he impacted during his life, Vince Filliben’s legacy is one that will live on for years to come. In his note to the Archmere community, Headmaster Michael Marinelli wrote, “Vincent Filliben ’47 was a devoted alumnus, teacher, coach, athletic director, and mentor to generations of students and colleagues at Archmere Academy. Dedicated to his work and his family, his thirty-nine year career at the Academy could be measured by athletic and academic successes and accomplishments, but may be best considered as one that has helped shape, define, and sustain the positive growth of the school through commitment and hard work over five decades.”
