When the results of this Report were first announced to the public in 2000 it created a firestorm of controversy for Colin and the crop circle “industry”. The Colin Andrews archives are the largest and most comprehensive accounting of the early crop circle phenomenon around the world. This Special Edition is a re-telling of the original research report from 1999/2000 prepared by Colin for the now deceased American philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller and the Rockefeller Disclosure Project. Rockefeller had funded research about the “best cases” of the UFO phenomenon which he distributed to the Clinton White House and other governments around the world. He considered what was happening with crop circles to be part of the same dynamic interacting with humanity.

Today, some eleven years later, the results of this Report still dominate many interviews Colin gives. In the summer of 2010 Colin was uninvited to a major conference in the UK when one of the “true-believers” protested his participation. There is a small group of these true-believers who still to this day do not want to accept what is really going on in the fields all over the world (50+ countries). They still espouse that all of the circles are made by unknown sources. Their cottage-industry of photographers still magically seem to know where the circles and formations are before everyone else. Most of the circle-makers, with the exception of a few, have still not come forward. The farmers have gotten smarter and many now charge to see the formations in the their fields. But the “Why” questions have not been asked by most of the true-believers. They are satisfied with making money from the color photos, tee-shirts, and other artifacts they create and sell. Same with the local governments and tourism groups which now count on the “croppie” business each year. Better to let the formations happen then to prosecute anyone and scare off the tourists. Colin’s research during the last two decades has centered on the ‘Why” questions ever since Doug and Dave came forward (the first two admitted circle-makers) with their claims. For Colin, it is now all about “consciousness”, about the internal process that the circle-makers go through, the Why. If you remember the Richard Dreyfuss character in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, who is driven to make the clay replica of the mountain where the aliens want them to meet at, then you can begin to understand what the circle-makers are going through. Even Doug and Dave have said, "But you know, it's as if something makes us do it." I hope by publishing the Series more of the circle-makers will come forth and tell us all their own unique reasons, their own unique Why, and maybe then we will begin to know who or what we are really dealing with. In 1983 our small research team started working together in England. As the investigation evolved for me, so did the questions. What first jumped out then was:
“What created this set of swirled circles?” In 1991, after I was privy to some significantly detailed claims by Doug Bowers and Dave Chorley in the presence of the Today National newspaper at Pat Delgado's home, again the question changed. That question was then:
“Which ones did they make?” In the late 1990's I received a late evening phone call from BBC's television director, John Macnish and his wife Jayne. They were filming interviews surrounding a
documentary they were making about the involvement of those same two men, Doug and Dave. John was good enough to consider the impact upon me, of what he believed he had discovered, before releasing it to the public. Pat Delgado and I had taken part in many TV programs for the BBC and had got to like him and his wife Jayne, very much. The details he revealed could only have come from someone who made many of the crop circles. He showed me letters and the envelopes they were received in, on which designs were sketched and date stamped, before they appeared in the fields. There also were photographs (negatives) of crop circles that even our small team had not seen before nor in some cases did the farmers whose land they were on.

ANALYSIS “ The people taking the photographs knew where the circles were before anyone else, because they made them. “ The mail and the negatives came from the same two men, Doug and Dave. This was very compelling evidence to support their claim that they made the crop circles in the early 80s - but NOT ALL OF THEM as we will see. Some of their claims were flawed and I had the evidence. In 1996 I was asked by Laurance Rockefeller to provide information for the Rockefeller Initiative. The Initiative provided the United States government with the ‘best available evidence’ regarding the UFO with the purpose of opening public dialogue.

I continued to receive funding in 1999 from Laurance Rockefeller to conduct a two-year investigation into crop circle hoaxing. I put together a team which studied the construction patterns of man-made crop circles. Members of this team infiltrated several circle-making groups uncovering new information regarding the level of anomalous phenomena experienced by the hoaxers while making circles. Using man-made circles as a base, our team studied the formations that appeared in England throughout 1999 and 2000.

Our research data brought us to the unpleasant conclusion that in 1999/2000 in England, that 80% of all the circles we studied showed "unassailable" signs of being man-made. The remaining 20% showed all the signs of being part of the genuine phenomenon we had encountered 20 years earlier. The publication of this data was largely rejected at the time. Today, in 2011, the majority of honest, unbiased researchers have come to believe the truth of this assessment. It might seem strange to be talking about an important phenomenon in the same breath as showing evidence that many are man-made.
We are starting at the beginning, where any detective has to, and will finish up at a verdict when all the evidence has been gathered and thought through. One thing is for sure and should be stressed at this stage. There is no advantage for any of us to create myths or new religions as we experience the realization that emotions are impacted by what we see in these fields and/ or, what we would like to believe. Emotion is, I believe, part of a much larger study and perhaps even key in understanding what could be described as the biggest social experiment in our time and just when we needed the lesson.

Well known people in this research are in vast denial with major parts of the puzzle and, so to complete the task of understanding it, is impossible. Even worse is that some know better but don’t have the courage or honesty to come clean. I know that for a fact. A full eleven years after I announced the findings of the Rockefeller financed study, that only about 20% could not be explained, many who are in the public eye, refute even one circle is made by people. I feel such privilege and honor to have been given this opportunity. I didn't go out looking for this — it just happened that I found myself involved in it.
And I can stand back after twenty-eight years and see what an opportunity this has been to observe, from the inside, an extraordinary thing that is occurring. I've seen all the human weaknesses and strengths that have come to bear as time has elapsed. We began with three regular guys — two coming from science, and the third a meteorologist who basically just "dropped in" to the phenomenon and drew it to the public's attention.

Although I have to say that I've only been directly approached twice, but have intuitively felt their presence from time to time. I've seen a lot as time has gone on — some of it very disconcerting and some of it very uplifting. It has been an extraordinary human experience, and I do think that those words "human experience" express the bottom line. We have to embrace every element of the phenomenon in order to get its full worth. Certainly there was a time when hoaxing did not occur. But now it is the norm. We see how the mystery attracted "Doug and Dave" and those like them. And the immediate question is, why? What motivates people to do such a thing.

By their own admission to John MacNish from BBC Television (who went undercover to investigate the Doug and Dave incidents, and who was dumbfounded when he heard this), "But you know, it's as if something makes us do it." Doug Bowers was acknowledging this, and his partner, Dave Chorley, concurred.
So I don't think we "get" the entire picture if we simply deny these people a voice, if we just simply say, "you're lying." I believe they have credible experiences in their own right. Not to my credit, of course.
I've heard this same kind of thing coming from just about everyone out there that the public doesn't see — the other people that are making counterfeit circles.
But then I felt that I should open my door and be prepared, first of all, to listen, and to ask why. This is very important!
I've been spending so many years with this, and it's only been during the last few that I've been open to talking to people who I had perceived initially to be deceptive, dishonorable, and dishonest — in other words, those that were making crop circles to fool people like myself and the public.
Unless we get answers to the “why’s”, we don't see the entire picture.

I started to literally phone these people. And I've now met quite a number of them confidentially, and I'm getting a picture that fits the equation I looked at before I opened the door to them. Again, this is a "human experience." This was meant to happen, and it's coming on two fronts. The first front are those humans who are "inspired" to make the circles. The second front is the "something else" that is interacting authentically with the human circle makers.
We don't know who the "real" circle makers are. But there is certainly compelling evidence that whatever the source is, it is intelligent. It knows what it's doing. This isn't a random placement of nature.
When I and Pat Delgado (who had just finished working with the Mariner Project for NASA) joined forces and starting researching this phenomenon, we wrote the book Circular Evidence and put this subject into the public domain. From that moment on, you could say, we kicked ourselves in the teeth, because we had introduced to the public this dynamic focus and potential of possibilities. So now we weren't the only people on the planet wondering what the heck was going on. Suddenly there was TV, and millions of people, asking the same questions.

ANALYSIS We were, I hope, acting as beacons of light and the disseminators of information. And, indeed, we felt a deep responsibility. It was important for us to be totally up front and not to be brought into any particular camp, agency, or business, but simply to be the public's front. We were very conscious of that. But, it did have its downside. A couple of young guys, for instance, might have a pint of beer and run out into a field and have a go at it. These attempts were, and still are, very obvious. Even youngsters can spot them.
Then there are those who have become much more professional and successful in replicating extraordinary, accurate designs. Indeed there are some designs that I would hold up my hand to say couldn't be made by humans — setting myself up, of course, because now people are going to great pains to replicate features that I had hitherto believed could not be replicated.
We started seeing more and more people making crop circles that were obviously and notably fakes.
