POST Vol. 1 Issue 1

We are striving for a little more transparency and interaction with the students this year, and it comes in due time for our 25th anniversary. To be fair, running an organization is difficult, takes time, effort, and commitment. One challenge that comes with student organizations is changing leadership every yea. Not only do you have to prepare interested individuals for future leadership roles but sometimes you have to find them as well. We all make fundamental mistakes, and we know it’s through our failures that we learn the most, and we want future student leaders to learn from past mistakes. Change in leadership does not has to be difficult! Cover your bases, have those who are interested in leadership roles shadow the current leaders. Let them get a feel for the position and have them review the organization’s constitution, which is available to all students online through SG. Then hold elections and there you have it! Every so often there are difficulties with individuals wanting to do right by an organization, and those concerned with doing right for themselves. So please, if the main reason to become more involved is because it will be good on a resume- Please Don’t, especially if you are eye-balling a leadership position. We all struggle with establishing an identity, especially as design students, and Architrave is no different. Each year everyone wants to try to make the publication their own, leave their mark on the school. But as we learn from putting circles in our mappings, trying to be different for the sake of being different is never beneficial. As an example When Tim Cook became CEO of Apple after Steve Jobs, he didn’t drastically change the design of the iPhone to make a statement that Apple is now different because he is in charge. He maintained continuity and improved where he and his team decided it was appropriate.

So here is what we learned so that you don’t have to! Do it for the good of the organization because you care about it-alot. Share your mistakes with others so they can make new ones and continue to move your organization forward. Maintain continuity in all aspects. And above all, be transparent with your surrounding community.
