CAMPing in the CITY! by Architecture for Refugees

Between the 29th of June and the 2nd of July in 2016, the Architecture for Refugees in collaboration with the eme3 international architecture festival organised a workshop in Barcelona . We invited professionals and participants to discuss the architectural and planning aspects of the refugee crisis. Four days with three main topics. On the DAY 0. we organised an informal meetup on the Placa de Sant PerĂŠ to have the chance with the participants to get to know each other. Around 20 people gathered together from different countries with different CAMPing in the CITY! - GENERAL INFO

professional backgrounds. The next three days were workshop days. The Architecture for Refugees defined three main topics as organisational / basic themes: 1. Private shelter 2. Public infrastructure 3. Organisation - HQ DAY 1. - Private shelter On the first workshop day, Irma Arribas Perez was invited to kick-off the day. She presented her experiences and findings about the situation in the Idomeni and EKO camps in Greece. CAMPing in the CITY! - GENERAL INFO

TIME MIND and SPACE BODY CAMPing in the CITY! - DAY 1. - PRIVATE SHELTER - TIME MIND and SPACE BODY

* time, mind, space and body!? Even though these words have a lot to do with architecture, it is quite clear that the boundaries of architecture are much wider than we think it nowadays! Octavi Rofes - Irma‘s antropologist colleague - and his interdisciplinary approach are crucial in this discussion! CAMPing in the CITY! - DAY 1. - PRIVATE SHELTER - TIME MIND and SPACE BODY

„One day my friend Basel and I, Mahmoud, woke up in the Idomeni refugees camp and surprisingly we did not see any cameras nor reporters. Since we arrived in Greece, we got used to seeing cameras everyday, but no they were gone, and therefore we have decided to become reporters with cameras and microphones. We cannot afford real equipment, so we built them ourselves. The microphone is a tea cup covered with domestic Syrian socks, and the camera is made from a cartoon box and an empty bottle functioning as camera-lens. We went out in the camp to ask the refugees opinion about our idea and all of them were supporting us with smiles on their faces. Then we started interviewing them by asking about their situations, everyone we asked started CAMPing in the CITY! - DAY 1. - PRIVATE SHELTER - STORY + REFUGEE TV

responding to us as if we were recording for real and they explained their tragedy living life in Idomeni camp and how they had left their homes seeking a normal safe life in Europe, but now they ended up at the borders of Macedonia unaware of what was going to happen to them. It seems that for them living in where they are at the moment is almost as bad as it was in Syria, worrying about what tomorrow will bring and as cold as it was in Syria without houses. yet no hope of any help from the United Nations, EU or any other countries. This is how the idea of recording our situation in the Idomeni camp came to life, but this time with real professional equipment. We want to show the world this tragic situation with sick children, and educated and talented people hopelessly sleeping on the roads that has become a reality of our lives. Our aim is to record this sarcastically as the international politic news keeps talking about us yet without any actions. We also interviewed some of the volunteers from Europe and other countries, our first question to all of them was: “imagine you are a Syrian refugee in this camp, what would you be able to do?” Most of the answers after a long “hmmmm” were, “I do not know and I can not imagine” others simply could not give any answer to this question. It is important for us to let our voices, and those of the other Syrian refugees, be heard by the world. In order to be able to report in English we have asked our friend Mustafa Alhamoud, who has an excellent level of English, to help us with the translation from Arabic to English. We have created a Facebook page with the help of our friend CAMPing in the CITY! - DAY 1. - PRIVATE SHELTER - STORY + REFUGEE TV

Sameer who owns a laptop, and together we have become a team of 4 people: 1. Mahmoud Abdul Rahim, 24 years old, from Aleppo Syria ( the reporter ) 2. Basil Alyatkan, 28 years old, from Damascus Syria ( the imaginary cameraman ) 3. Mustafa Alhamoud, 24 years old, Aleppo Syria (translator and real cameraman ) 4. Sameer Tatan, 23 years old, Idleb Syria ( Facebook page admin ) One group of lovely people from Germany have donated a camera to us, enabling us to record for real, and post refugee messages and tragedy on our Facebook page. We can now show the world how we are living, and that the politics shown on the news are not helping us. Through our hard work and with your support we want to let the whole world hear our voices, so we can finally get some real help to open the borders for us, so we can go live a normal life like every human being deserves to have. Please follow us and support us with your voice.“ The text is from the refugees.tv‘s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/refugees.tv/home
