November 09 Discussion points in recent news have surrounded the subject of women and skyscrapers and the essence of true Architecture. Both The Times and The Guardian invest time and column inches in reporting on the ever-changing world of architecture; its substance, its integrity and its future. The Times recently held an interview with global architect David Chipperfield. The purity of his architecture and simplicity that is at the heart of his designs has always mirrored the form of nature and Chipperfield tells the reader that his designs always intend to evoke what is at the heart and in the very foundation of the buildings he creates. A compelling interview and a beautiful reminder of what design really means to the architect at the root of it all. Rifling through my stack of papers and The Guardians’ ‘Arts’ section catches my eye, the image is

of Chicago’s newest skyscraper and the headline alludes to a discussion point of female architects designing skyscrapers. Familiar names and faces crop up to discuss why they think that female architects designing our lofty buildings is so rare and what Jeanne Gang has accomplished in the stunning Chicago scraper. Of course the phallic connotations of a skyscraper lead the discussion on to a question whether that has an affect on the decision and how more and more female architects are now stepping into the realm of the steeping structure, taking their place amongst the most powerful practices and lending their design expertise to the gargantuan projects of today. In this issue of Architects Choice we have plenty to provide you with in terms of innovative products. News brief... HLM ARCHITECTS SEEKS PLANNING PERMISSION HLM Architects has recently submitted the designs for Cornwall’s new Brannel School for planning approval. It is hoped that the new school, which will cost £16.3 million to build, will achieve planning approval by October 2009, with construction works starting on site early 2010 and the new facilities completed for the start of the 2011 academic year. It is intended that the school will achieve BREEAM Excellent. The new school is needed to replace existing Brannel School buildings, which have become beyond economical repair. The new buildings will provide 6,622 square metres (about 71,000 square feet).

DESIGN AWARDS TURN TO NIGHTINGALE ASSOCIATES The Viking Day Unit in Margate and the University of Oxford’s Magnetoencephalography (MEG) Unit have been shortlisted in the Turning to Timber category of the annual Builder & Engineer Awards. University of Oxford’s MEG Unit, shortlisted for the award, is a purposebuilt Magnetoencephalography scanner unit and was designed by Nightingale Associates for the department of psychiatry at the university. The facility is housed in a single storey building on a magnetically ‘quiet’ site. The Viking Day Unit in Margate was also shortlisted. The project transformed an existing day unit of six chemotherapy chairs. The new building had to deliver space without functional compromises and attempt to radically improve the patients’ experience.

State-of-the-art learning Devereux Architects has changed the way children learn in its latest project, Monkseaton High School, after introducing a 360 degree teaching environment to improve performance levels in the classroom. Monkseaton High School has already grabbed the headlines for its state-of-the-art facilities and has been commended for its green, eco-friendly features. But as the new, futuristic, ellipse-shaped school opens its doors for the first time, the pupils will walk into a whole new learning environment. The design, beyond the formal teaching spaces, incorporates a number of learning areas for students to study independent of teachers. The light, airy feeling created throughout the school encourages ‘open’ learning and is a move away from traditional, ‘institutional’ school design. Commissioned by North Tyneside Council, the £22m contract was awarded to Devereux Architects to design a new community high school

The landmark ‘lantern’ is lifted A 32 metre-high ‘lantern’ platform, which will allow visitors to take in panoramic views across Stratford, has been positioned at the top of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre’s new tower. The glass and steel viewing platform, which will accommodate up to 50 people, was built on the ground and lifted into place by a 300 tonne mobile crane. It will sit on the magnificent new Theatre Tower built by eight specialist

in Monkseaton. Ian LancastleSmith, Director of the Devereux Architects team, took up this challenge and endeavoured to create an education environment which responds to the way subjects are delivered and learned in the 21st Century. The innovation carries on throughout the new school. The interior is open, so you can see from one side of the school to the other, creating ‘passive surveillance’ to prevent bullying and anti-social behaviour. Devereux Architects has also incorporated ‘toilet pods’ into the design, so toilets can only be used by one individual at a time, preventing vandalism. Devereux Architects ensured that the building was positioned in the most sustainable area on site, reducing the effect of heating and cooling. The school has an abundance of sustainable features, not only reducing its carbon footprint but also creating an environment to maintain optimum performance levels during the school day.

The outer walls have been built by hand over the last nine months and to do this the tower has been progressively encased in scaffolding. The prominent structure was inspired by the original Memorial Theatre water tower, which was engulfed in flames when the theatre was gutted by fire in 1926. As well as becoming a significant new feature for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (RST) itself and providing stairs and one of two passenger lifts serving all levels of the new theatre, this structure will create a

Leigh’s Labour MP Andy Burnham, Secretary of State for Health officially opened the landmark housing development scheme on Lord Street, Leigh on 4 September including Rueben’s Court and Leigh Community Resettlement Service. Adactus Housing and Ark Design and Architecture have worked closely with Wigan Borough Council and Richmond Fellowship, a specialist provider of mental health services, to provide spacious, high quality apartments for 14 people living with the effects of mental ill health. Richmond Fellowship is one of the biggest voluntary sector providers of mental health care in England, supporting over 7,500 people towards the best possible quality of life for each individual. The building which is owned by Adactus draws on local historical cues and expresses its residential

nature in the arrangement of full height windows as seen on Victorian terraces in Leigh. Ian Moores, Director of Ark Design and Architecture commented at the time, “The launch marked the beginning of a positive impact, both to the surrounding environment and certainly to the lives of its residents.” Maggie Hysel, Chief Executive of Richmond Fellowship says, ‘’This new development demonstrates our belief that the highest quality housing is at the heart of the mental health recovery journey, enabling each person to make choices and gain confidence at their own pace, with the individual support they need to live life to the full”. The £1.9m scheme is under a year old and has already received a commendation for its innovative design from Wigan Council’s Urban Design Awards.

This month’s question: What ultimate changes would the Gazprom Tower in St Petersburg bring to the city?

Architect Will Alsop recently misled the public with his announcement that he was leaving the architecture profession. After revealing the truth, it has been found that Alsop has in fact moved camps to work for RMJM and would continue his love of painting, merging abstract designs into new buildings. With Alsop’s move to RMJM base comes more conflict though, with the controversy that surrounds RMJM and their plans for the Gazprom Tower to be built in St Petersburg. The design of the tower will mean that, if approved it will become the tallest structure in Europe once completed. The conflict comes, as with approved permission, Unesco will withdraw St Petersburg from the list of World Heritage sites, ultimately changing the image of the city. What, in your opinion is the right thing to do? Should RMJM withdraw its plans or should Unesco allow for the Tower construction to commence without removing it from the World Heritage List? What ultimate changes would this structure bring to the city?

PHILIP RICHARDS ARCHITECT AT WOODS BAGOT

Cities should be allowed to take on board new and exciting developments and not be shrouded in a protective historical shield. We should respect history, but not linger in it. Modern structures can be built, which are in harmony with the historical fabric and respect the historical architectural traditions. New modern developments are allowed to be built in World Heritage Cities but they have to meet the high quality standards.

reflect and mirror the historical city of St. Petersburg with its protruding domes and spires. Apart from being in the wrong location, the solitary tower scale and height is even more accentuated by low base development, which appears to have more of an impact on the city. If this development goes ahead and UNESCO withdraws St. Petersburg from the list of World Heritage Sites, the implications could be disastrous and open the flood gates to more controversial tower developments which will be dotted around the periphery of the city

“If this development goes ahead and UNESCO withdraws St. Petersburg from the list of World Heritage Sites, the implications could be disastrous. ” Apart from the aesthetics and the design of the tower, the main concern, looking at the images, is the size, scale and height, which is obviously being built in the wrong location and is completely out of context with the horizontal proportioned historical City of St. Petersburg. The 400 meter tower will be four times higher than the maximum height of 100 metres permitted by existing planning rules in the city. If the development was further away from the city, it would be good to see a cluster of towers; slowly rising up to the main tower element, that would then

comparable to the machines in HG Well’s War of the World – poised for their final attack on the city. This development could be the catalyst for the future and St. Petersburg will become infected with the Dubai syndrome, an extremely vicious disease. In an ideal world RMJM should not withdraw its plans but go back to the drawing board and convince the client to the redesign and still create a fantastic scheme which will conform to City Planning and UNESCO’s requirements. In the real world, Gazprom is Russia’s biggest and most powerful

PHILIP RICHARDS ARCHITECT AT WOODS BAGOT Philip has been involved in a diverse array of architectural projects including several high profile mixed-use developments. Most recently, Philip was incolved from design through to development of the TFL site in Hammersmith and was joint coordinator of the Gateway buildings to the National Stadium, Olympic Way, Wembley. Currently, Phil is working on a Grade II landmark hotel and residential scheme in the City of London.

company, with close ties to the higher echelons of Russian government – Guess who’s wearing the ‘trousers’ in this situation? The other question is how will the building be perceived in years to come? Will it stand proud representing the era it was conceived in, the symbol of Russia’s wealth and rebirth, comparable to the current historical monuments of St. Petersburg, such as the churches, Cathedrals and the neighbouring classical and baroque architecture with protruding spires and domes? The building should be a timeless icon of this era, an ‘Audrey Hepburn’ of buildings. Unfortunately, this building has no relation to the Historical City of St. Petersburg, and looks as if it could be situated in any city in the world! Currently the scheme looks like a ‘Britney Spears’ of buildings - Perhaps Will Alsop can put his Super architects suit on, and save the day. Hoorah!!!!

MWA TECHNOLOGY LIMITED TAKE ACTION IN THE INDUSTRY CALL FOR ACTION ON ILLEGAL AND DANGEROUS METER CONNECTIONS Two business executives are concerned about industry estimates that 90 percent of connections to third party UK primary gas meters are illegal. Martin Wardell of MWA Technology Limited, an independent metering supplier and Steve Lewis of Apex Engineers are worried that the national gas industry standard is being ignored and have combined to launch a service to offer site surveys. Wardell explains: “Real time monitoring of gas consumption means that companies are turning to energy monitoring companies – many not from the gas industry - to install equipment which enables them to connect to the third party fiscal meters and send consumption data directly to a central point. In order to do this they connect to a pulse output socket in the meter, but making this connection is regulated and should only be undertaken by an authorized person,” Lewis commented, “A major consequence of ignoring the standard could at worst be a fatal explosion or disconnection and removal of equipment”. The partnership between meter equipment supplier, MWA Technology and power and energy consultancy, Apex Engineers, provides a site survey service to ensure that gas connections are safe, in accordance with regulations and logged by the meter asset manager (meter owner).

White light solution for Cenotaph Royal Philips Electronics’ (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHI ) has provided a white light solution using the award winning CosmoPolis lamp and gear system to illuminate Middlesbrough Cenotaph. Part of a larger renovation scheme, the lighting brief entailed the refurbishment of the existing period lighting columns to improve the lighting level of the pedestrianised area around the monument as well as floodlighting the Memorial itself. One of the main criteria for this new scheme as put for-

ward by Stainton Lighting Design Services was to ensure that the luminaires were unobtrusive during the daytime whilst providing a subtle, energy efficient, illumination of the memorial by night keeping light pollution to a minimum. As a result, the former 150 W high-pressure sodium period lanterns were replaced with new matching heritage style lanterns, which incorporated good optical control thereby improving the general illuminance level of the area. To replace the single 150 W highpressure sodium lamps, special decorative double brackets with new twin lanterns were employed each fitted with 60 W CosmoPolis lamps. The perfect partner for timber windows The demand for the use of timber in housing projects has been recently revived due to architects, builders, the local authority and homeowners starting to fully appreciate its low carbon footprint, aesthetic appeal and environmental credentials. As a result, PDS worked alongside long established supplier, Quantum Profile Systems LTD, to develop a high performance bead system that was as equally environmentally friendly and respectful to its surrounding areas as the timber window. The result was an engineered timber composite pinless glazing bead system and bonded bar made from recycled wood dust and PVC – U. This offers an extremely stable and high performing alternative to traditional timber components. Q Wood is a rigid profile extrusion of PVC blended with wood fibres. The wood used is derived from enduring forestry of new spruce and beech wood fibres, which are sourced from sustained PEFC certified forest stands. Q-Wood profiles reflect the natural appearance and feel of wood whilst still retaining the beneficial properties of PVC. IN THE COMFORT ZONE

Breaking the mould

WindowMaster has launched an innovative new indoor climate solution for small and medium-sized buildings. Called NV Comfort™ the new control system enables an optimal indoor climate through consistent pure natural ventilation. At the same time it can save enough energy to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. NV Comfort™ is based on WindowMaster’s established NV Advance™ system for management of natural ventilation in larger projects, such as schools and offices. Control system NV Comfort™ regulates and adjusts internal air quality using an intelligent, computer-controlled system that harnesses the natural forces created by temperature differ-

WindowMaster has posted recordbreaking figures in the UK for the first eight months of 2009 despite the recession. The company has seen growth in a number of sectors but particularly in school buildings. WindowMaster has secured a number of contracts in the education sector in the UK. In the first eight months of 2009 WindowMaster has signed 50 new contracts in the education sector. Local authorities, which are building schools under the government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme are driving the growth. They are incorporating increasingly sophisticated technologies into their projects to achieve savings in energy use and CO2 emissions. Among these are natural ventilation systems, which not only save energy compared to air conditioning and traditional mechanical systems but also deliver benefits in terms of improved learning as a result of fresher air in the classrooms. WindowMaster’s window automation systems have the ability to provide a complete installation. In addition to the motors, window actuators and sensors the system includes a weather station. The weather station monitors external conditions around the building, including wind direction and speed, temperature and rain fall. Changes in wind pressure on the facades are also modelled. These parameters are programmed into a computer control system where they are analysed along

ences outside and inside the building and by the effect of wind around the building. It has fewer features than NV Advance™ and is therefore ideal for smaller projects with a limited number of zones. NV Comfort™ controls façade and roof windows so that they automatically open and close by incremental amounts on the basis of individual fixed values for the desired room temperature and CO2 levels, as well as measurements of external temperature, rain and wind speed. Patented MotorLink™ technology enables the NV Comfort™ system to register the opening distance of each window as well as quietly opening and closing them.

with readings taken from the weather station and sensors fitted internally. Windows around the building are then precisely controlled and positioned to keep air quality within rooms fresh and the temperature constant. In addition, WindowMaster’s NV Advance™ window automation system is the only system in Europe that intelligently monitors windows to prevent entrapment as an integrated function of the motor and control system. Insulation to weather the storm Corcoran Products Limited is celebrating 40 years of importing and distributing STYROFOAMTM insulation to the Irish construction market. Corcoran sold its first load of STYROFOAM to developers of a mushroom farm in the 1960s, where a controlled, regular temperature was required. Since then the business has sold an estimated 15 million square meters of STYROFOAM products to help insulate the floors, walls and roofs of countless office blocks, apartments, hotels and public buildings across the country. STYROFOAM – or foamed polystyrene – was invented in 1941 by The Dow Chemical Company, and has developed to become one of the leading methods of building insulation today.

Products such as ROOFMATETM, FLOORMATETM and PERIMATETM – all in the familiar blue of the original STYROFOAM – are now familiar sights on construction sites all over the world. Corcoran Products is part of Corcoran Chemicals, established in 1939 as an independent distributor of chemicals in Ireland. Corcoran Products was set up in 1999 to deal exclusively with finished products, including building insulation and packaging products. Hardware online Joinery specialists Glyngary have recently launched a new website as another channel to sell their hardware products. Glyngary’s core business is manufacturing high quality sash windows, timber casement windows and doors, however, the Glyngary team have decided to take a step in the online direction. Glyn is the Sales Director and commented on the move, “My Brother Gary saw a gap in the market While there are numerous companies selling hardware, none of these com-

panies actually use the product themselves. Glyngary are different. All the products on the site are used within the factory on a regular basis. There are no products on the web site which Glyngary have not tried and tested in the factory and would not be happy using on their own windows and doors. Another major difference is that Glyngary are happy to sell the quantity people need rather than insisting on you purchasing ‘box quantities’.” For further information telephone 01925 763 836 or visit www.glyngaryhardware.co.uk

THE OLED CONCEPT Royal Philips Electronics has unveiled four new OLED lighting concepts created for high-design hospitality, residential and retail environments at the recent 100% Design show. All of the concepts are based on Philips’ Lumiblade technology, incorporating glowingly radiant OLED light panels. These unique light sources are a key focus of Philips’ current solid-state lighting research and development activities, and are making it possible to create completely new types of lighting experiences. The four concepts represent widely varying types of imple-

mentation ideas that use OLEDs in uniquely different ways. The Lumiblade Markerlight is specially designed to ‘lead’ people on a voyage of discovery. In the Lumiblade Reflections concept, your own mirror image interacts with light in utterly unexpected ways. Lumiblade Mr Ed illustrates how OLEDs can give decorative images an extra dimension of high-design impact. The Lumiblade Glow concept presents light as an element that actually responds to you. All of the concepts can be used to create highly distinctive effects in hospitality and retail environments, as well as in homes. tured extensively and is a regular speaker on the subject of sustainability internationally. Who better to answer our questions…

Q A

How long have you worked for Woods Bagot? I’ve been at Woods Bagot for 10 years, starting off my career in Australia. I’m now Woods Bagot’s Director of Workplace and a Global Board Member. I’m currently based in London and work on projects across Europe, Australasia, USA, and the Middle East.

interview important is research to architecture and what research are you engaged in? I am fortunate enough to be part of an organisation that encourages and values research that can be applied to our craft. I contribute to many of Woods Bagot’s research publications, most recently Work Life, which examined a number of topical issues facing workplace design today, including sustainable practices and innovations. I have a particular interest in sustainability and have published research papers on The Business Case of Environmental Sustainability and a global perspective of What’s Next in Sustainability?

A

Q

What is your favourite sector to work in when working on a project? I work across all sectors but I am the global Director of Workplace at Woods Bagot and have a deep specialty in this sector. Creating workplace environments that are highly effective and productive within often strict commercial parameters is a good discipline that can be employed in civic and educational projects. Similarly, transferring the ideas of an unfolding guest experience commonly applied to hotel projects is a great way of elevating workplace environments.

A

Q

Take us through some of the innovative projects that you are leading for Woods Bagot? We are currently exploring bio-mimicry on a project, which learns from Butterfly wings and how they reflect and absorb light and how this can create a highly effective skin of a building. Light emitting diodes have progressed in recent time by a similar technological transfer and have been applied to making visual displays on mobile devises more efficient.

What do you consider to be one of the best ‘green buildings’ built so far? I am fascinated by traditional mosques in the gulf region. These sacred buildings often employ wind towers that draw in hot air, channel it over a cistern of cool water and allow it to dramatically reduce the ambient air temperature of the prayer hall by way of convection. I also believe the most sustainable machine is the tree. When you think about it, what other machine can pump water 40 metres into the sky, all fed from sunlight, enriches the soil and converts carbon dioxide into oxygen?

Q

How do you see the future of sustainable buildings evolving? Are we on the correct course or do you feel that there is a better way of promoting a sustainable approach through architecture? I do not believe that we will rely on technology to be the silver bullet of sustainability. We are seeing an increased awareness on learning from the past, alignment of building response to place and harnessing the power of nature to create environments that touch the earth lightly.

Q

What do you hope to achieve through the BNZ project? This project is focused on creating a workplace, which is a business enabler of cultural change. The client is currently housed in three different locations and this project brings them together in a connected vertical campus that is transparent to the public and the customers they serve. The project also aims to be a good urban citizen by being the most advanced sustainable building in a country, which enjoys a long history of caring for the earth. The building was also a pilot project for the introduction of the Green Building Rating System in New Zealand.

SEAMLESS SOLAR SHADING When designing the new extension to Nottingham Trent University’s Chaucer Building, local architect, Maber Associates chose to incorporate an innovative new external Solar Shading system, developed by Levolux. To ensure a clean, uncompromised aesthetic, which could be achieved in a short timeframe, Levolux installed its new ‘Infiniti Fin’ Solar Shading system (patent pending), featuring a unique, revolutionary design. The ‘Infiniti Fin’ System has unique ‘invisible’ fixings that create an incredibly stable and seamless arrangement of Fins that appear to float in front of a building. The concealed fixings incorporate a patented stainless steel locking plate, which is engineered to accept a range of Fins, with widths of up to 480mm. Levolux installed 24 rows of 300mm wide horizontal aluminium Aerofoil Fins around the entrance of the Chaucer Building extension. Compared to alternative ‘bird mouth’ type fixings, the ‘Infiniti Fin’ system’s revolutionary design reduces weight, has greater structural integrity and can bring significant cost savings to clients. Roof hatches for student accommodation New student accommodation at Loughborough University has benefitted from specially designed roof hatches from Surespan. Surespan was chosen by Laing O’Rourke, who constructed the £68 million project, to design and install a SRH roof hatch for each of the 23 new buildings, which provide accommodation for 1,300 students at the university. Consisting of a double lockable SRH hatch with drop down zip retractable ladder, they allow maintenance staff access to the roof for inspection purposes and to carry out statutory tests. Business Manager at the university Seamus O’Neil commented: “We are really pleased with the work carried out by Surespan. We have recently used the hatches to gain access to the roof in order to carry out an inspection of the lightening conductor, and found them very easy to use. I would recommend their hatches to anyone who is looking for a similar solution.” Surespan designs and manu-

Everything’s gone green Castle Quay is a contemporary development in the heart of Bedford’s new cultural quarter, an area that includes a number of bar/cafe/restaurant units. To reduce the impact of the development on the environment, a proven green roof system was selected using the Sika-Trocal Concept. Architects and specifiers are increasingly constrained by planning regulations that limit discharge consents

and require protection of biodiversity in urban areas. Green roofs are providing an interesting and environmentally conscious solution to these requirements, meeting high priority local authority concerns, while creating colourful and vibrant developments, such as this one at Castle Quay. For the green roof on Castle Quay, the main contractor turned to experienced Sika-Trocal licensed con-

tractor CA Single Ply, who worked with Greenfix SkyGarden. This ensured that both experts in roofing and horticulture would work together to install a growing medium-based green roofing system over a SikaTrocal Type SGmA membrane in a warm roof construction. Curtain walling for Phoenix Place Phoenix Place located in Basildon, Essex is the head quarters of the local NHS primary health care trust. Dovetail Architects designed the building selecting W.A. Hills as the contractor with Comar Approved fabricator Anglia Fixing Limited complete the glazed element of the facade. Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems was a natural choice as they have designed their Comar 5Pi interfaces range, a set of bespoke profiles that mimic the edge of cladding panels so a window can be installed as if it were a panel. In this project the Kingspan Optimo range of cladding panels were selected in a light dust blue, at every storey ribbon windows were incorporated from the Comar 5Pi thermally efficient range. Comar 5Pi tilt and turn windows were selected which can be tilted to allow ventilation as well as, when unlocked, open in to allow cleaning from the inside. To the perimeter of these windows Comar CS486 and CS487 Kingspan cladding adaptors were fitted which allowed the window to be directly integrated into Kingspan without the need for additional flashings or packings. The Comar Cladding Interface creates peace of the mind for the client through the reduction in maintenance of flashings and the aesthetic appeal of the invisible integration. To create feature and contrast to the Kingspan cladding Comar 6 curtain walling was installed. For further information, telephone Comar on 020 8685 9685 or email projects@parksidegrp.co.uk

A NATURAL APPEARANCE The Forticrete Gemini Tile is often the preferred choice of Local Authorities and Housing Associations. Forticrete's Gemini maintains the appearance of a traditional plain tiled roof, thereby allowing the original architectural style to be retained. When compared with Concrete Plain tiles, the amount of CO2 produced in manufacturing the latest Forticrete Gemini tile, factoring in the difference in weight (75kg/m² v 45kg/m²) and quantity of tiles on the roof (60/m² v 16.3/m²), produced results – 40 per cent less. Forticrete’s Gemini roof tile was specified for the South Yorkshire Association’s 71 home development at Canklow Woods in Rotherham. The cost-effective alternative, provided a stylish and economical

alternative to Natural Slate, which was considered but rejected because of the cost implications. To satisfy the local planning requirments, the buildings had to fit in with the local vernacular and Cartwright Pickard looked at several different options and ideas before selecting Foricrete’s Gemini roof tiles. The tiles were cost effective and provided a close match in colour to the planners’ needs. Gemini is a large format interlocking tile that looks like two small format tiles when laid. Approximately 4000m2 of Slate Grey Gemini Tiles were used for the project. For further information telephone 01525 244900, email roofing@forticrete.com or visit www.forticrete.co.uk

Knauf AMF sheds light on production facilities The former home of Rowe Printers in Hayle, Cornwall has recently undergone major refurbishment. The old print room has been converted into a production area for computer repairs and refurbishments, requiring significant alterations to the ceilings, services and light fittings. Knauf AMF Light Boxes were specified for the project with 120 units being installed throughout the 500m2 area. Where an

opening is made in a fire-rated ceiling to install recessed light fittings, the fire-protecting capability of the ceiling is compromised. AMF Light Boxes are designed to seal the penetrations and maintain the fire integrity of the ceiling, offering a minimum of 60 minutes fire protection. AMF’s Light Boxes have been tested under mezzanine and timber floors as well as steel beams, with full certification from the

Warrington Fire Research Centre. The Light Boxes also reduce sound leakage through the light fitting and feature pre-mitred slots for side panel integration and location on the grid system. Lightweight and self-supporting, they are available in a range of sizes, formats and heights. For further information telephone 0208 892 3216 or email sales@amfceilings.co.uk

Secured By Design gets teeth! Ian Longbottom of Sliders UK highlights the far-reaching changes in security requirements for local authority planning

T

he fact that the government is committed to sustainable housing and to the development of millions of affordable homes is a well publicised fact, much used politically and warmly welcomed by the UK construction industry overall. The strings to which the glazing industry is becoming acclimatised to, in the form of WER’s, are already being forced through for social and political reasons as the government rolls out its commitment to a sustainable future and lower CO2 emissions. There are other strings too which have been developing in the background and have a somewhat more tangible social and political context. Make no mistake, the very significant effect on the window and door industry will soon be apparent.

Secured By Design An initiative of the Association of Chief Police Officers, SBD has been increasing its influence for several years. Initially a two page reference guide for house builders it has become an all encompassing design brief of some 37 pages which designs crime reducing products into buildings and site layout. The initiative works. Secured By Design developments are proven to reduce crime and now The Department for Communities and Local Government (Home Office) is firmly backing the initiative. In the words of a senior designer at a major national house builder “Since April 2009 everything has changed - Secured By Design has got teeth!” As another developer put it “The future for planning permission for social and private new build developments will increasingly be dependant on SBD compli-

Ready To Fit Sliders UK have been manufacturing the UK’s first and only Secured By Design patio door since July 2008. The “Ultimate” patio door was a long time in development in conjunction with major hardware suppliers and the result is tried and tested, easy to use and simple to fit. Already specified by major house builders and developers it also takes pride of place in many prestigious window and doors showrooms throughout the UK. After all; who would expect a sliding patio door to have been made so secure as to achieve the recognition of the Police? Others are sure to follow as the market rushes to SBD compliance. Few if any though will have Sliders unique pedigree; an already highly specified SBD patio door with well over 12 months reliable service, made to stringent BBA specifications in one factory with ISO 9001:2008 compliance, distributed nationally to over 600 customers and at prices which make SBD very affordable. A company growing strongly through the recession and poised to offer maximum benefit to its customers in the future.

Invitation Sliders UK’s hugely successful Free Showroom / Show house door offer has been extended due to its unprecedented success. The company now extends an invitation to installers in the social and new build housing sectors – join the ever increasing number of installers who fit the “Ultimate” door and solve at least one SBD compliance issue with ease! All This And In Colour! Whilst security is increasingly a major issue, competition amongst developers and builders also keeps design and colour at the forefront of our industry. Making in excess of 400 patio doors per week, Sliders UK are able to take advantage of economies of scale and stock a huge range of exciting options for specifiers and home-owners. With two shades of white and two sash options (featured and chamfered) the company can offer an aesthetic match for virtually any profile system. Standard foil options of mahogany, oak and rosewood are complimented by a rare stock of black, grey and cream, along with short lead times on new Renolit “Prestige” foils such as Antique or Irish Oak and Rustic or Soft Cherry. Currently the only patio door which meets even the minimum BBA requirements, colour from Sliders UK is backed by a unique quality mark which assures performance and longevity. heating and ventilation Thermo-Floor work with Housing 21 in Walsall Thermo-Floor, the supplier of next generation energy efficient underfloor heating and cooling solutions, has partnered with Housing 21 – a leading provider of retirement housing, care and support services for older people – on the development of two new Extra Care Facilities in Walsall. “The main contractor, responsible for the £165m re-provision project, brought us on board for our expertise and next generation products,” explains Neil Evans, General Manager of Thermo-Floor. “We were asked to design and install over 4000m2 of under-

floor heating at both the Northgate and Mossley Extra Care Facility. Specifying underfloor heating for a project of this type makes sense. It is the most energy and cost efficient way of creating a comfortable inner climate – an important consideration in an Extra Care Facility. Also, no radiators means considerably fewer dust traps which is a huge benefit for people vulnerable to allergies or bronchitis. More people are choosing underfloor heating for its superb energy saving performance, as well as its environmental and health benefits. ThermoFloor is determined to continue leading this trend.” For further information telephone 01455 203205 or visit www.thermo-floor.co.uk

Advancements in underfloor heating In response to the significant development of underfloor heating systems in the UK, leading European water treatment specialist Sentinel has launched a brand new sanitiser and biocide product to add to its well known ‘X’ range of products. The new product is called X700. X700 kills bacteria and fungi and removes blockages caused by slimes whilst additionally providing protection against the re-growth of bacteria and fungi in underfloor heating systems. Most underfloor heating systems utilise flexible plastic hosing to carry heated water around under the floor and the surface of such piping in contact with warm water is particularly conducive to bacterial growth. During periods of warmer weather and in summer months, when the heating is turned down or off, the water ‘sits’ fairly motionless in the pipes allowing the growth of bacteria and fungi to take place which can cause major problems when the system is next started up. THE PERFECT BACK UP AT MADANI Wessex ModuMax condensing and high efficiency boilers from Hamworthy Heating are providing the perfect back up for a biomass boiler at Madani High School in Leicester. The decision to use biomass and gas boilers reflects the current trend for using renewable and traditional products in tandem. The two Wessex ModuMax boilers were installed by Robert Prettie and Co Limited, to the design performance specification set out by Pick Everard’s building services engineer, Philip Johnson. Heating is distributed using radient panels, which prefer the higher temperatures being generated, with radiators only used in the stairwells. The boilers supply all the heating and hot water via a Hamworthy Powerstock Calorifier, and the entire system is controlled by a BMS system to ensure each room is kept at a constant temperature and monitored on site by the facilities team. The school has achieved a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating. Wessex ModuMax boilers are compact floor standing boilers, which offer a choice of high efficiency condensing or non condensing models. When ventilation is key to success When Forest Way Special Educational Needs School was opened recently, 35 Elta Fans were installed as part of the system to provide a comfortable, effective and well-ventilated learning environment for the pupils. The school, situated in the National Forest in Leicestershire, is a new coeducational special school for 138 pupils aged 3 – 19 years old with a wide range of special needs. Designed with sustainability in mind, the school incorporates several integrated, eco-friendly systems, added to which is the low energy ventilation system that utilises the Elta fans. The ventilation system incorporates eighteen Elta ‘Quietflow’ single fans,

three ‘Quietflow’ twin fans, one Elta ‘Skyflow’ SSF roof unit, four domestic SE fans and two SCE fans. The 22 larger fans were supplied complete with all required ancillaries and accessories such as mounting feet, silencers, speed controllers and sensors. The system is powered by renewable energy and automatically controls the ambient environment in each classroom. The main contractor for the development was Wilmot Dixon, with Fans and Spares Nottingham (Elta’s local distributor), providing the Elta equipment to Derry Building Services For further information telephone 01384 275 800 or visit www.eltafans.com

QUIETLY DOES IT Keston has entered the air source heat pump market with the introduction of Airgen; it’s extremely quiet, highly efficient range of air source heat pumps, designed specifically for UK applications. The Airgen has been designed with British conditions in mind, bringing domestic hot water up to 65°C, with no need for the support of an immersion heater or direct resistance heater. At the same time Airgen provides space heating for radiators and under floor heating systems at variable temperatures from 35°C to 55°C. The Airgen comes in three models, which include a 4.5 kW system designed for small flats, 9kW and 12kW for larger properties, giving a complete spectrum of choice for the domestic market. The 9kW and 12kW versions can be banked together, with bespoke designs available for light commercial applications. To optimise efficiency, all units have dual temperature operation. Larger units incorporate twin scroll compressors to further maximise efficiency. Despite the fact that the Airgen operates from as low as -15°C, with functionality including a heated drip tray and four minute frost cycle enhancing its capabilities, as with all air source heat pumps, efficiency is compromised when the temperature drops. Time to comply The facilities management firm, Beacons Business Interiors (Bbi) has sent out a warning to UK businesses that they have only six months left to prepare for government legislation on reducing its carbon emissions. Significant fines will be ordered if facilites managers fail to comply with the new legislation surrounding air conditioning units. Bbi has sent a warning out to businesses about failing to update their old format air conditioning systems, which use ozone-depleting gas HCFC R22. For further information visit www.bbi-uk.com

Clever venting Swindon Borough Council’s Central Library has benefited from Passivent’s natural ventilation and has been recognized as a top example of sustainable design in the UK, according to the firm. The library, in its newly developed state has won the Bespoke category in this year’s BREEAM awards, with the Passivent ventilation scheme as the key element in the £10m development. The library was previously a single storey building; now it is a fourstorey build and very much makes a feature of the

natural ventilation, boasting a series of brick-clad service and ventilation ducts around the main facade. According to Passivent, the systems are proven to be one of the building strategies to attain “up to an A rating” in the new Energy Performance Certificate. The principles of Physics are applied to the Passivent system. Natural variations in air temperature and pressure cause air movement. In this instance the Aircool window inlets draw fresh air from the courtyard into the building without the problem of surrounding noise also getting in. feature: Portico

Fitted wardrobes with sliding doors from Portico Midlands, alongside matching tailor-made furniture, are proving an increasingly popular option not just with the trade but also with TV design shows.

The internal appearance and layout of a property is crucial in attracting a buyer.

Although we are apparently seeing those all-important green shoots of recovery in the economy, the property market remains highly competitive. When designing and fitting out properties, architects and specifiers must strike a balance between maximising appeal to buyers with the need for the cost-effective sourcing of materials and products.

O

f course, the internal appearance and layout of a property is critical in persuading potential buyers to make the purchase, and even relatively small details can have an important effect on look and feel. With this in mind, choosing the right internal doors - including those for wardrobes and cabinets should be done carefully. What’s more, selecting the right products can offer better use of space and more efficient storage – a big attraction for a home of any size. Fitted wardrobes with sliding doors offer an effective way to achieve a sleek, modern look and as such are proving an increasingly popular option. There is also the important added benefit of the fact that they eliminate the need for space otherwise taken up to allow hinged doors to swing open freely.

With a wide variety of styles and finishes available, both new build projects and refurbishment work to revive a tired looking property can benefit from attractive and fashionable storage. Furthermore, other bedroom furniture such as bedside cabinets can now be made-to-measure with matching finishes to give a really high-end look without the hefty cost. In fact, with all units available as made-to-measure, an effective solution can be found whatever the size and shape of space you have to work with. In new properties, units can be specifically fitted for full floor to ceiling storage and that all-important “wow” factor, whilst for high-end projects they can be tailor-made for each plot. In refurbished properties they are bringing a new edge to an old feel, cost effectively adding an up-todate look with the minimum of effort, regardless of the shape of the space you have to fit them into. Importantly, sliding doors can now be made in widths of up to 1000mm, as opposed to the 300mm-500mm offered by hinged doors, meaning that they can offer a greater degree of design flexibility. What’s more, new systems with an apparently frameless door, where the wide panels appear even larger due to the lack of a visible

By Jon Gough

surrounding frame, are soon to appear on the market. The same broad scope for design and style can also be applied to internal doors, which not only offer a versatile way to separate open plan areas, but can also provide a real design boost. It is a similar case for open plan rooms, where a sliding room divider allows the option of splitting a room when they are shut, or having an open plan space when they are drawn open. A room divider can add a real elegance to a room whilst also offering the appearance of more space. There are dozens of uses for room dividers – you could separate a bedroom from the en-suite, create a walk-in wardrobe or even add an optional spare bedroom by splitting the living area. The versatility of these systems means that they can be used to meet a range of design demands, from simply offering an attractive feature in a room, to making sure that smaller properties and refurbishment projects make the most of the space available. Importantly, they are costeffective, too – making them a viable option for both high-end developments and those with a more modest budget. ■

Washroom re-design by Igloos IGLOOS Washrooms is a specialist contractor in washroom design, manufacture, refurbishment and new build in all venues. Their innovative use of products and materials answers technical, ecological and design demands. IGLOOS has developed its own line of cubicle systems, which

is has recently been used to complete some exciting projects including a 70’s Rollerdisco, a sophisticated restaurant, and a multi-storey YMCA building in the heart of London. The Central London project at the YMCA involved re-designing an existing unisex washroom area on the 14th floor

into separate male/female facilities, whilst overcoming the problematic drainage and plumbing connections and replacing baths with showers. The brief for the restaurant included keeping an industrial feel whilst creating a sleek, easy to maintain washroom. The design of the rooms made use of the high curved ceilings and exposed ventilation pipes with a seamless cubicle system with addi-

tional height. Hot pink cubicle doors with a wavy white pilaster were installed at the Rollerdisco, in keeping with the brief. To complement the disco atmosphere in the main hall a “disco ball” effect was created with a mirror mosaic effect surrounding the main vanity mirror. Selectaglaze

Secondary glazing for heritage windows Established since 1966 and a Royal Warrant holder since 2004, Selectaglaze is at the forefront of research and development and their units have undergone rigorous independent testing for energy efficiency, noise insulation and security.

K

eeping historic buildings in active use can be a massive undertaking and one of the biggest headaches is often caused by the most defining feature and character of a property - its windows – which can be cold, draughty; provide little protection against noise and minimal resistance to burglary. Proposals by Government advisors to financially penalise homeowners who do not fully insulate their property have been put before Ministers ahead of the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan, the Government’s white paper setting

out its plans to cut carbon emissions by 34% by 2020. This, together with research undertaken by the Halifax Building Society indicating that fuel efficiency and energy saving measures are considered to be the home improvements, which add most value, serves to demonstrate how important it is to raise the thermal efficiency of windows. Owners of heritage buildings will be aware that English Heritage is clear that traditional windows should not be replaced with double gazed units and other solutions must be found. These include Secondary Glazing, a reversible adaptation that can provide thermal insulation in line with Building Regulation Part L standards together with the added benefits of high levels of acoustic insulation and improved security and one that is included within guidelines produced by English

Heritage, Historic Scotland, SPAB, The Victorian Society and The Georgian Group. With this in mind Selectaglaze, the UK’s leading designer and producer of secondary glazing systems, offers a wide range of sympathetic designs including units that slide horizontally, vertically or hinge as well as fixed panels. A welcome new development is a minimalist “Heritage” hinged casement unit, which is ultra slim, shutter friendly and offers very discreet lines. It will fit into the staff bead and blend imperceptibly with the original window, providing easy access for cleaning and ventilation and allows shutters to remain fully operational. Horizontal sliding systems are ideal for treating timber and steel casements and Yorkshire sashes. Panels run on glide pads or rollers to provide easy access to the external windows. Vertical sliding systems suit sash windows of all sizes and pre-tensioned balances allow widows to be opened to any position. Heavier duty hinged units are particularly suited to French windows and sash and case windows where full access is required and can also be glazed with sealed units to achieve triple glazing. And finally most styles can be sympathetically shaped to accommodate designs from Gothic to Art Deco. The systems are made from aluminium which is an ideal material to use in traditional buildings as it is strong, lightweight and can be extruded

to form the slender, complex shapes needed to accommodate seals, fixings and specialist hardware. A permanent finish, normally paint, is easily maintained and available in a multitude of colours to blend with the interior décor. Aluminium sections can also be factory curved to follow the existing window design. Shown here is The Old Smithy, a beautiful thatched listed building in Bedfordshire dating back to the 17th or early 18th Century. Still operating as a smithy in 1925 at the time of the rating Valuation Act, it was described as having a “parlour, kitchen, pantry, scullery and office, with three bedrooms upstairs in the attics. Outside were the wood and tile smithy, shoeing room and store in addition to a two bay open hovel. At this time the horse was rapidly giving way to the internal combustion engine and the valuer noted ‘very little trade now’.” Some time after this entry the property became a family home. However, the current owner found it to be draughty and, being located on a busy main road, was in need of noise insulation. Selectaglaze treated a total of 17 windows in an assortment of shapes and sizes, some of which were finished in brown to match the existing windows. product innovations Mobile high-frequency single-station converters FEIN is adding the two mobile FEIN high-frequency single-station converters, the HFS 17-300 and the HFS 27-300, to its high-frequency range. They enable high-frequency grinders to be used at workstations without an HF mains connection. Only a 230 volt electrical connection is needed on the construction site or in smaller operations. The FEIN high-frequency angle grinders and straight grinders deliver considerably higher grinding capacity than standard-frequency machines. They are particularly suited to continuous use in metal construction, steel construction, tank construc-

tion, shipbuilding and foundries. The FEIN HF single-station converters can be connected to any 230 volt socket with a 16 ampere fuse without the need for installation and convert the mains frequency to a high-frequency connection at 300 hertz. The FEIN HF single-station converters HFS 17-300 and HFS 27-300 have power outputs of 1700 and 2700 watts, respectively. They can also be used on the construction site thanks to their light weights of 5.9 and 8.3 kilograms. The housing is particularly robust and all of the construction elements are sealed. As they feature no wearing parts, FEIN HF single-station converters are maintenance-free and have a long service life. For further information visit www.fein.com

Energy-efficient lighting The eco-friendly headquarters building of architects Watson Batty in Guiseley, Leeds, employs a lighting scheme comprising a variety of energyefficient luminaires from Cooper Lighting. For the lighting scheme, the firm of architects recognised the importance of minimising energy consumption while at the same time creating a well-lit working environment, and different luminaires were selected according to the requirements of each individual area. Because the building utilises a geothermal heating and cooling system, there are no conventional suspended ceilings, so it was decided that the main openplan offices would be illuminated by Cooper’s Crompton Synthesis range of suspended fluorescent luminaires. These attractively styled luminaires aid compliance with the CIBSE LG7 guide by providing the requisite balanced lighting using a wide-distribution lens for uniform upward illumination, combined with a choice of louvres for direct downward illumination. In addition, Synthesis luminaires use twin T5 lamps (28W or 35W) and high-frequency control gear to maximise energy efficiency.Featuring an elegantly curved, slim-line profile that measures only 66mm in depth, Synthesis luminaires are constructed from extruded aluminium with a choice of finishes. They are supplied with two 1.5m-long yoked suspension wires, which are easily adjusted to length by means of an ingenious yet simple clutch mechanism. Omega paving encourages water flow The Omega Flow paving range from Brett Landscaping is designed to address the issue of reduced natural drainage due to growing levels of urbanisation. Suitable for all types of paving projects, the Omega Flow concrete block paver can be used as a proven component within Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS). Given the increased volume of impermeable hard landscaping in our urban areas and ongoing

changes in rainfall patterns there is going to be a continual growth in the volume of surface water runoff. Brett Landscaping’s Omega Flow concrete block permeable paving product can offer a solution to the problem of flooding by attenuating rainwater runoff. This is achieved by engineering blocks that maintain a larger gap between each block to allow surface water to pass between the blocks and into the sub base. This serves to both slow the flow of water from the site, thereby reducing the peak loading on the drainage network, but also to improve the water quality. Underground solution Litter bins over-flowing with unsightly waste are unwelcome and unhygienic – and they need constant attention. Otto’s Underground Waste System (UWS) tackles the aesthetic problems as well as the need to improve waste streams segregation. Access to the underground storage is via neat surface receptacles and as underground temperatures tend to be lower than those in surface containers, odour levels are reduced. Typically, a UWS may hold the equivalent of between 15-20 240ltr wheeled bins, so there’s an environmental advantage in vehicles making fewer collections. The large underground containers reduce the amount of discarded waste lying around a full litter bin, and as underground temperatures tend to be lower than those in surface containers, odour levels are reduced. The contents of a UWS can be collected in about two minutes by a vehicle with a single operator. The collection vehi-

Turbomiser chiller wins double accolade The companies behind the ultra-efficient Turbomiser chiller have achieved a double win for the technology in the UK’s most prestigious industry awards. UK distributors Cool-Therm and KlimaTherm worked closely with Italian manufacturer Geoclima to develop Turbomiser, acclaimed as “probably the most efficient HFC-based chiller in the world.” They received the awards for Environmental Pioneer – Air Conditioning and Environmental Collaboration of the Year at the glittering finals of the Cooling Industry Awards, held at The Hilton on London’s Park Lane. The Turbomiser uses between a third and a half of the energy required by conventional screw or reciprocating chillers. This is made possible by the ground-breaking combination of a compact centrifugal compressor with virtually frictionless magnetic bearings, floating head pressure design, LPA low energy free cooling, flooded evaporator and fully integrated dy-

Receiving the awards on behalf of the development team were Ken Strong, managing director of Cool-Therm, and Roberto Mallozzi, managing director of Klima-Therm. Open Metering System The “Open Metering System” initiative of the manufacturers’ associations figawa, KNX and ZVEI has published an open, manufacturer independent, interoperable device and interface definition called an “Open Metering System Specification”. At present, the OMS specifications are being reviewed by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN), as European new work item proposal TC 294. The OMS specification is available on the internet at www.openmetering.org. From May 2007, several

working groups of the Open Metering initiative checked the use of existing standards and defined supplements or concretions where necessary. For the data transfer between the actual meters and the data concentrator MUC – defined as primary communication – the EN 13757 standard was identified as the only current standard applicable to metering devices. This standard defines the M-Bus as a physical interface (wired and wireless), as well as a data protocol. EN 13757 also complies with the KNX standard. The remote communication is defined by approved internet standards. For further information visit www.knx.org

the last word

The last

WORD The possibilities are endless By Denise Freeman External wall insulation systems (EWI) are used to create thermally efficient buildings, but they also have the potential to make a huge contribution to the aesthetic of a building, however wild or extravagant that may be. At this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show there was a fantastic example of a system being used exclusively for its decorative potential in the Cancer Research garden. While this use does not in anyway exploit the practical performance of an EWI, it is a great demonstration of its aesthetic possibilities.

T

hink external render systems and what comes to mind? A clean, minimalist, white façade? Think again – external renders are moving on from a restrained and elegant aesthetic to reveal their potential for flamboyance, colour and imagination: characteristics that are proving to be appealing to landscaping as well as the architectural sectors. ‘Impact’ was the theme of the garden, with the landscaping and planting representing ripples emanating throughout the garden to reflect the gentle, pervasive impact of Cancer Research in all of our lives. The feature wall constructed using the Sto external wall insulation (EWI) system StoTherm Classic, beautifully showcased the system’s design possibilities and provided an aesthetic, imaginative, curved perimeter for the garden that made a positive contribution to the design as a whole. Offering exceptional impact resistance the Sto system was ideal for this landscape project. The system is made up of a series of different products with an EPS layer providing the insulation. For this application, the EPS was carved with computer-controlled precision to incorporate the flowing curved motif prior to delivery on site. Once it had been fixed to the timber frame the EPS was strengthened with the highly flexible, cement-free render and reinforcing mesh

and then finished with a hand-applied Stolit acrylic resin render in two colour shades to give a truly three-dimensional effect. The muted colour of the render finish and the organic shapes carved into the surface combined to create a structure that is both functional and sculptural. This finish to the perimeter made a dramatic point of difference to the traditional fences and walls used to produce the mandatory boundaries that surround each show garden.. Although it is still a relatively new concept, Landscape architect Robert Myers tells us that he has used our systems in a number of his designs. There is huge potential for external render use in landscape and external works designs and with new innovative products on the market they have a real opportunity to succeed. As a durable, functional and versatile choice for landscape architects its use introduces structural elements into projects that can make strong, bold, aesthetically pleasing statements. The crack-resistant Sto render system also offers a superior finish that cannot be achieved with the use of traditional sand or cement render systems. Evidently, render systems are beginning to capture the imagination of architects and specifiers alike. Maybe one-day these systems will begin to be used in landscaping projects just as frequently as they are used on buildings, creating interesting, large-scale features at a low cost. Designers like it because of the ease and speed with which they can be installed and the design freedom they offer to specifiers. Render systems, of course, are suitable for a wide variety of projects, from public to private developments and both housing and non-housing. The Cancer research Garden was awarded the Silver-gilt Flora medal. Designed by Robert Myers and constructed by Willerby Landscapes, the StoTherm Classic system was installed by Regency Plastering Ltd. ■
