Prologue

Editorial Greeting

Editorial Greeting. Archevent 2021 began with the issue of natural disasters that have been occured in the world, such as flood, tsunami, earthquake, landslides and so on. The natural disaster has a massive impact on people who experience it. The mass destruction, loss of life, even pain. In addition, on a personal level, natural disasters also have a direct impact on the mental health. Post-disaster survivors tend to have an accompanying shock, which causes them to experience hopelessness, feel helpless, as well as an imbalance in the psychological and mental condition . The recovery of the survivors depends on themselves which is highly influenced by the ability and willingness to heal and get back on their feet. In this case, it takes an effort and a process to heal and cope up with the situation which we know as resilience, a mental or emotional ability to overcome a crisis or to return to a pre-crisis state quickly after experiencing post-disaster. Therefore, 'Healing Architecture' became the main concept of Archevent 2021. Healing architecture is a healing method that uses architectural elements to support the healing process. The concept of healing architecture in Archevent 2021 was used to support the healing process of the post-disaster survivors through space manipulation which acts as a catalyst to create a healing environment that affects the physical and psychological behavior of survivors. Thus, the survivor will be able to recover from the past, rediscover their identity, and find a place that helps them to return to their normal lives.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT

archevent ? Archevent is an annual event organized by Architecture Department of Univeristas Sebelas Maret, where students, academics, and architectural practitioners gather to create innovation, exchange ideas, and also appreciate each other. Consisting of architectural design competition, seminar, and exhibition of works, Archevent has become a highly anticipated event among architecture students in Indonesia. The journey of Archevent began in 2012, initiated by the concern about current architectural issues in society from that time to present time. Therefore, before diving into this year's event, we invite you to take a trip down the memory lane to look back on the topics from the previous years. Shall we?

Prologue

Greeting From

Greeting From Archevent. Architecture Event. An annual event organised by, from and, for the Department of Architecture of Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta. Since 2012, Archevent has been consistent in facilitating students, academics, and professionals to create, innovate, and exchange knowledge and ideas on certain topics. Every year, Archevent raises different issues as well as its solutions that address social, economic, and cultural aspects. As an architecture student, it is essential to be aware of the surroundings and think critically to respond to a society and environmental challenge as a problem solver. Archevent 2021 “Re(dis)covery” entered the ninth year of the committee and that encouraged us to adapt to the pandemic conditions by holding the second online events. This, however, Diva Sarah Radiya did not hinder us from continuing our work, rather, it allowed us to Archevent 2021 Project Officer spread our wings. Archevent 2021 set a milestone for the Department of Architecture of UNS committee, which for the first time hosted an international-scale event consisting of 110 committees from Architecture Department Class of 2018-2020. This accomplishment was inextricably linked to the discussion and process with our collaborators, including our supervisors: Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani, S.T., M.T., Dr. Ir. Moh. Muqoffa, M.T., and Dr. Yosafat Winarto, S.T. M.T., along with our partner supervisors from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM): Lee Yoke Lai, Ph.D and Leng Pau Chung, Ph.D., P.Tech. This year, our highlighted issue arose from natural catastrophes and mental health issues, both of which were currently becoming a concern in Indonesia. Natural disasters have a significant environmental impact, particularly on the survivors because they should be the main emphasis of the post-natural disasters' recovery. Architecture and its built-environment can provide a safe and sound space for survivors to restore their purpose and meaning of lives. We intended to raise an awareness for students and professionals to understand how architecture and built-environment contributed to the improvement of the post-natural disasters' survivors by promoting Healing Architecture. As the journey of Re(dis)covery began with Recovery, Discovery, and Rediscovery, we invited all built-environment parties to focus on design features that considered the mental health of the post-natural disasters' survivors. Our hope was that Healing Architecture can be one of the most effective aids for supporting the Resilience of the survivors.

Greeting From

Greeting From Assalamulaikum Wr. Wb. All praise and gratitude to the presence of Allah the Almighty, owing to His blessing and guidance that Archevent 2021’s Booklet could be completed. I would like to thank the Chancellor of Universitas Sebelas Maret, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, the Head of the Architecture Study Program, and the architecture lecturers who had supported the continuity of this event. I would also express my deepest gratitude to the Project Officer along with the staff of Archevent 2021 who had strived for the success of Archevent 2021. Archevent is an annual event that has been carried out for generations by the Department of Architecture, Aldorio Oktamusyaffa Yelatria Head of Student Association Universitas Sebelas Maret. This year, Archevent raised the of Vastu Vidya 2021 theme of Resilience which means the ability to adapt and stay strong through any difficulties. The theme was based on natural disasters that have been happening in Indonesia and Southeast Asia since early 2021. With this theme, we hope that all readers, especially architects, could add insights into dealing with one's psychological condition through an architectural approach. As Winston Churchill quotes, “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.”

Greeting From

Greeting From A ss alamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh A rc h i t e c t u re , re c ove r y , re s i l i e n c e a n d psychology, these words are strongly connected in archevent 2021. By raising the theme resilience and the concept of healing architecture, archevent 2021 presents a series of talk shows/webinars combined with architecture and landscape student competitions. This theme is quite relevant. The change in nature such as climate change, tectonic plate movement etc. implies to the occurrence of natural disaster. This is a the phenomena which we must ready Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholihin As'ad, M.T. to live with. Earthquake, flooding, fire, tsunami and Dean Faculty of Engineering others, do not only leave damages or catastrophes for Universitas Sebelas Maret our houses and infrastructures but also leave a psychological distress, trauma or even very excessive trauma. The survivors, some times, are not easy to face and remembering this bad experience. Building houses and new roads are easy thing, but spirit to live and to continue life is not. Therefore psychological aspect is one main concern in helping community to be recovered and continue their life in post natural disaster. Architects must consider the psychological and cultural in helping people to be recovered both physically and spiritually. At the end, this is expected to forms a resilient community. Archevent is the annual event organized by the association of architecture student Vastuvidya, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). This year it comes with its international brand. As Dean, I would like to congratulate the committees for this achievement. This indicates that our students are always striving for a better and larger impact of their event. The Archevent 2021 is supported by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (IAI) Surakarta, professionals and experts from several institutions. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to UTM and IAI Surakarta for our long last partnership, to the speakers for their valuable insight, to the students who join the competition, to the webinar participants , to the sponsors and to the committee. I hope the archevents 2021 enlightens and inspires us all. Thank you.

Prologue

Greeting From

Greeting From Dear distinguished delegates and guests of Archevent 2021, Greetings! I hope everyone is keeping well amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. I am extremely delighted that Archevent organizing committee of Architecture Department, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has managed to organise their annual flagship event - The Archevent 2021, with the theme “Re(dis)covery” that consists of design competition, webinar series and editorial in an international scale. It gives me great pleasure and honour to be able to pen my welcome message at this meaningful event.

Leng Pau Chung, PhD, P.Tech Senior Lecturer Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (Architecture) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Architecture is the art of defining space and time through the use and creation of man-made structures. It is essential to consider the link between man and space, and consequens. Humans determine the spaces in which they live, and space, in turn, defines the activities of human beings. They are mutually exclusive. As a result, the role of healing architecture designers to achieve human's resilience for natural disasters survivors is critical and vital. Natural disasters and mental health are often correlated, hence, this meaningful event gracefully facilitates and links up the professionals, experts, scholars and future leaders via virtual platforms where the interaction and thoughts exchange occurs. In conjunction with Archevent 2021 theme - Re(dis)covery, namely: recovery, discovery and rediscovery, this event not only embraces and promotes knowledge and intellectual sharing from experts, but also welcome the creative and innovative ideas of built-environment students in contributing their passions and design ideas as alternatives to the natural disasters site, particularly South East Asia regions, since most of the ASEAN regions are vulnerable to natural disasters due to the geographical locations. My hat's off to the dedicated organizing committee and lecturer-in-charges of Archevent 2021 for taking on this mammoth task and putting down a truly memorable moment and effort for this event. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest welcome to all distinguished guests, speakers and delegates of Archievent 2021. Let's get connected in cyberspace with progressive contributions to our built environment. Cheers! Thank you and stay safe!

Messages from

The Supervisors

Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul H., S.T., M.T. I was very honored to participate and collaborate with professional judges in the judging process of Archevent 2021 design competition. All the judges had different and complementary expertise. Some of the judges had also worked in the post-earthquake site, including Ir. Eko Prawoto and myself during the Jogja Earthquake quick recovery process in 2006. The committee members were very professional as they had worked well together. They were willing to accept changes, very cooperative, and they took the advice given by the judges very well. This type of service, I believe, should be prioritized when organizing an international competition. The committee had also put on a great effort to attract foreign participants by holding a roadshow to overseas universities as part of the publication process. Photo and video teasers of the competition could be better prepared in the future to attract more participants.

Prologue

Archevent 2021

archevent. 2021

Issue. Natural disasters have been a major issue all around the world, in particular, South East Asia countries. It is known that natural disasters and mental health are often linked due to the profound effect on someone's life of traumatic events. That includes the mental health of survivors who risk losing their identities in the aftermath of a natural disaster. Those mental health adverse effects can manifest as mental instability or psychological symptoms which can lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disaster (PTSD). Therefore, it can have a detrimental impact on a person's productivity.

Background. A disaster is a natural or non-natural event that results in casualties, destruction, and disruption of someone's life. South East Asia's territories are vulnerable to natural disasters, alongside other peculiar geographical elements due to their location at the confluence of the Ring of Fire (Bayhon, et al., 2018). Natural catastrophes are mainly caused by natural processes of the Earth, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, and so on, often resulting in mass havoc, mortality, and suffering. Natural disasters severely damage a region, causing losses to the communities. On an individual level, victims may lose financial resources, suffer an accident or illness, or even lose their family, all of which have physical, mental, and emotional consequences. Due to its impact on a person's life, natural disasters and mental health are often correlated (Kreimer. A., 2001).

Concept. Healing architecture is a method that implements architectural elements to support the healing process and meet the needs of patients, based on a few principles: spatial legibility, privacy, dignity, and company, view and nature, environment, appearance (Lawson, 2010). The concept of healing architecture will aid in the user's psychological recovery. As a design solution, the idea is intended to assist post-natural disaster trauma victims in regaining a sense of purpose or improving their quality of life.

Prologue

Archevent 2021

Theme. A person who has experienced post-disaster trauma can recover over time but depends on ability and willpower, which is called resilience. Resilient people can recover quickly from pre-traumatic conditions, remain unaffected by stressful life events, and adapt to extreme stress and suffering. The resilience of natural disaster victims, which is composed of personality, biological, and environmental factors, becomes the main purpose in applying the healing architecture concept. Furthermore, it plays a key role to create a building design that integrates natural elements, five senses, and psychology.

Title. RE(DIS)COVERY is an intermediary for natural disasters survivors through healing architecture to reach a resilient human being.

1. (n) Recovery. Natural disasters affect the mental health of those who are affected. One of the psychological resources that can encourage someone to overcome adversity is resilience. Resilience refers to someone's ability to recuperate from hardship and adapt to the changes that arise in the environment. At the recovery stage, the disaster victims have a strong will to recover from traumatic experiences they have experienced.

2. (n) Discovery At the discovery stage, the disaster survivors seek out a place that can support them re cove r f ro m a t ra u m a . A rc h i te c t u re contributes to providing a responsive environment through healing architecture that acts as a catalyst for creating a healing environment.

Logo.

3. (n) Rediscovery Healing architecture shapes the resilience of survivors as a means of adaptation to restore mental health stability. At the rediscovery stage, the disaster victims rediscover their identity, which has been lost as a result of the trauma they have endured.

“Prologue: Co-Healing through Architecture and Psychology” was the beginning topic of Archevent 2021 Webinar Series. It was attended by approximately 171 participants via Zoom platform. This first webinar was moderated by Pratiwi Anjar Sari, S.T., M.Sc., a lecturer of Department of Architecture Universitas Sebelas Maret. Our first speaker, A.R.S.R. such as the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh and Central Sulawesi. On this occasion, she shared her point of view as a psychologist regarding post-natural disasters survivors' recovery with the topic “Reconcile with the Past, Activate Psycho-Social Functions to Progress with Your Current Life and Future.” For the first session, she shared her experience during Lombok's earthquake, which was one of the crisis events—events that happen beyond the scope of daily experience and pose a serious threat to individuals. Crisis events have the potential to be harmful physically and psychologically. When a crisis event occurs, we should prepare ourselves psychologically in responding

Dialogue

Webinar Volume 1

Factors Factors that influence the psychological impact of a crisis are characteristics, crisis/post-crisis environment, individual characteristics, family and community resources.

Psychosocial Support Psychosocial support entails aiding survivors to help them recover and build resilience. Not only does having adequate psychosocial support impact the individuals, but it also affects the family and society. The spirit of gotong royong—a traditional term for communal work—may encourage one another in Indonesian society to deal with post-crisis events together. Pyramidal Intervention T h e re a re t h i n g s t h at n e e d t o b e considered, including basic necessities, support from society and the environment, focus on non-specialist aid, and special services. Needs and Support Adjustment The needs and support of the survivors should be addressed in the form of immediate response to infrastructure Speaker: Ir. EKO AGUS PRAWOTO, M.Arch., IAI. Ir. Eko Agus Prawoto, M.Arch., IAI., as our second speaker, is a lecturer at Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana. He graduated from his bachelor's degree in Department of Architecture of Universitas Gadjah Mada and master's degree in Department of Architecture of The Berlage Institute. For the second half of the first webinar, he explained his perspectives as an architect regarding the role of architecture in supporting the healing of post-natural disasters' survivors with the topic “Develop the Soul through Architecture.”

for post-crisis, participatory assessment, psychosocial first aid, counselling groups with training, and mental health interventions (requires psychologist). Psychosocial Emergency Response Measures There are three phases of psychosocial emergency response measures: in short-term, medium-term, and long-term. Moderator:

Pratiwi Anjar Sari, S.T., M.Sc Dosen Universitas Sebelas Maret

Can Architecture Heal? He began with the story of his experience in Ngibikan Village, Yogyakarta. There was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that obliterated the city in only 57 seconds. Based on the local wisdom, it seemed logical to choose a lightweight and elastic structural system. Rethink about the Reconstruction Ir. Eko Prawoto had a dialogue with the Head of Village, Mr. Maryono, about constructing buildings out of the available materials and resources. Simple joints and distinctive modular design—inspired by traditional limasan houses Digital Booklet archevent2021.

Dialogue

—were used to construct the framework. The houses were technically built to give the impression that they would live under a sturdy construction. Other consideration in the reconstruction of post-natural disasters is the funding. Funding can be received from donors on condition that the reconstruction continues without changing the lifestyle of the local community. It is essential to perceive the people's lifestyles and respect the social systems by involving communities in decision-making. Aid coming from outside must respect its social systems due to the insignificance of the local information. The fact that everything has been destroyed is only the surface. Many things remain and not affected by the disasters, such as the people's abilities, expertise, culture, and values. Gotong Royong (Communal Work) The traditional Indonesian term of communal work, gotong royong, is a part of the spirit of Java which is not concerned with wealth. This is a cultural value that must be preserved. Slametan Slametan or celebration is a part of Javanese culture to thank God for the reconstruction process.

Webinar Volume 1

The Suitable Working Method Reconstruction of Ngibikan Village started in June 5, 2006. Local people did gotong royong (communal work) by cleaning up the ruins and sorting the feasible materials. In the reconstruction, Ir. Eko Prawoto divided the community into six divisions to make it effective: the site and wood cleaning, foundations, wooden frames, framework erecting, roofs, and walls or partitions. Why and How Did Ngibikan Village Revive? There were several factors that supported Ngibikan Village to revitalize, including the Javanese culture. Each culture has its own way to revive itself as part of the life cycle involving the dynamic comprehension of the earth and cosmos, acceptance, and the spirit of unity. Architecture is merely a tool to sustain life and preserve the integrity of a culture. We must not use the crisis to intervene unfairly, force them to abandon their culture because they have different styles and aesthetic standards from ours. We must have an understanding to allow them to work at their own pace. Local people are better knowledgeable about the area in which they reside. To Archevent 2021

Grateful for the opprotunity as one of resource person on this international webinar that organized by the students of Archiecture Faculty of Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret - Solo, on a very specific topic; Resilience from the perspective of Psychology and Architecture. Attended by more than 300 participants till end of the sessions; And English is the language used not only during the webinar as well from the very first time I was approached by the committee. All the committees are young people, university students, but the way of their work truly professional. Thumbs up to them. A message from ARCHETYPE. “...great human being is the one who can help others to rise again dan again”

Hi! I am Razan, a Project Officer of ARCHETYPE 5.0 which is an annual event from the Department of Psychology, Universitas Sebelas Maret. Me and my team have a goal to encourage Indonesian citizens to be content and happy through education about mental health. Similar to ARCHEVENT 2021 “Re(dis)covery”, the concept of healing architecture will aid in the user's psychological recovery. It's about the survivors who are distraught due to the earthquakes, about survivors who wipe their tears due to the tsunami, and about survivors who feel lost due to the landslide on the hillside. It's about the survivors, and about us, it proves that every person has their own obstacles. A great human being is not the one who looks for a living in the early morning, nor the one who reaches the summit. Yet a great human being is the one who can help others to rise again dan again. I hope the main purpose of ARCHEVENT 2021 can be accepted by people, helped to rise, liked because its familiarity, and so on. Also, it can be a pioneer for many new things that people aren't aware of. It's an honor for me and ARCHETYPE to have a great opportunity to collaborate with ARCHEVENT 2021. Hopefully, it can be a compass to show the direction for many other events. Thank you

Background Rapid technological advancements in MML resulted in an uncontrollable increase in the yield of exhaust gases into the atmosphere. This occurrence hastened the occurrence of extreme global warming. As the earth's temperature rises, the ice in Arktos and Antarcticos melts quickly, causing the volume of sea water to rise dramatically. The hemisphere surrounding the Polos area has begun to sink, leaving only the hemisphere at the Equator. Governments along the Equator, on the other hand, predict that the earth on the Equator will be submerged in water within the next two years. Humans have an instinct to seek refuge and a place to live in order to defend the human race. Humans require an adaptive residential design to maintain a sense of humanity in the face of disaster. Making amphibious houses was one of the adaptive designs used to ensure human survival at the time. An amphibious house is a type of house that can float like a boat when the water level rises, but can also stay on land in normal conditions, like a house in general

Design Criteria In order to keep the human life viable against catastrophe in the nect two years, the government provides 25 m2 of land for the citizens, which is sufficient for two people to live in amidst emergency situations. Humans who could previously live on land would no longer be able to feel the warmth of the earth, only embraced by the cold of the water.

Assessment Criteria 1. The ability of participants to conceptually and contextually visualize architecture. 2. The sharpness of participants in innovating to apply the concept of an amphibious house in design 3. Originality and quality of work.

A Message from Kart UNS

A Message From KART UNS “...along with resilience and perseverance we have in ourselves, we can stand stronger than before.”

In the last 2 years, we are still facing the biggest change in our world due to COVID19. Our lives have drastically changed due to this pandemic. All the while we are also dealing with natural disasters, which have their own effects to society. The same thing these disasters had in common is they bring sadness and sorrow to the people who are affected. Ready or not, like it or not, sooner or later, we have to rise from this downfall. This is where our resilience is needed the most. By facing the truth, having the time to recover, we will rise back up with more strength. Aside from sorrow, disasters also give us new things to learn.

32 Digital Booklet archevent2021.

With resilience, we can start to see things from the positive side. Society is forced to be more creative and therefore innovative to keep on surviving, and also having a new insight on how to anticipate the next obstacle. I'd like to take an example of how frequent earthquakes is in Japan. Since Japan's geographical location is prone to earthquakes, the Japanese people are forced to be creative and innovating a stronger structure so that most Japanese buildings are earthquake resistant. This is also show how it might take a long time to recover, but along with resilience and perseverance we have in ourselves, we can stand stronger than before.

This yearly Archevent, which held by Architecture students of UNS, is remarkable and deserves appreciation. However, after this forum ends, we need to take a note that the real contribution to the society is the real matter. I hope that in the future, we can form a better network and stronger bond to face any challenge this world throws at us. May we all be motivated to be a better person to make the world a better place. Thank you for the amazing spirit to talk about this matter and initiative from the student of Architecture Sebelas Maret University and all the participants on this event. #StaySafe #StayHealthy #StayCareoftheSociety

Back in 2013, Jetis Sumur was designated as a permanent residence for survivors of the eruption of Mount Merapi, the residence of Jetis Sumur, assisted by several architects, initiated an idea to create a comunity center that could become a gathering point for local residents. A community center, which is inspired by the aesthetics, tectonic, and culture of the local village as a means of support to rebuild a life that was delayed due to natural phenomena, known as the eruption of Merapi Mountain.

North Lombok is very located in very strategic geographical area, on tourist destination such as Mount Rinjani, three Gili Island, Sendang Gile Waterfall, etc. On 2018, Lombok has been shaken by two strong earthquakes. These earthquakes were the largest and the strongest earthquake to have hit lombok in recorded history. With more than 560 death, it is also the deadliest earthquake in the Lesser Sunda Islands since the 1992 Flores Earthquake and tsunami

Judges Feedback Well done. Spatial design quality is impressive. The participants were able to illustrate and propose architectural details in an intrinsic way. The design looks sophisticated and luxurious. The design process and diagrams are comprehensive and easy to understand. Its masterplan is subtle, creating a village-like setting in a controlled manner. Open and inviting yet provide a sense of control. The structural composition and decors incorporate local technology and craft. It already has a special space for psychological and medical treatments. However, crosscheck about the construction meets the community needs that the village population reaches over 3000 people.

Between 1998 - 2017, landslide affected an estimated 4.8 milion people and cause more than 18.000 deaths. Climate change and rising temperatures are expected to trigger more landslides especially in mountainous areas with snow and ice. As permafrost melt, rocky slopes can become more unstable resulting in a landslide. The condition of the context with the contours of the steps is used by the local people to make it one of the main sources of income(farming and gardening). High rainfall, and densely populated illegal settlements create landslide possibilities

Judges Feedback It's a simple idea that's also contextually appropriate. The construction is designed to help the landslide survivors. The design has incorporated the healing space, also considering the community building processes. Further development of construction details and construction steps / measures may be considered.

A comprehensive presentation with clear design process and diagrams. Interesting design for the optimal healing and recovery from a traumatic experience. Well explained with SDG as part of the consideration of the design. The building was designed with a strong emphasis on the survivors' psychological recovery. Appreciate the team's effort to learn some psych literature on designing. Despite its healing purpose, the design also poses a high risk of triggering the traumatic memories of the survivors. Phases of healing to acceptance and putting past into future possibilities. Contextually appropriate and possible landmark for Palu due to its strategic siting and architectural treatments. Then, keep records of the master plan from start to end. Imposing over nature, yet accepting manmade over created nature and the open sea. The people of the river often get challenged in their activities. the overflow of the river water when the rainy season arrives affects human activities and become a burden on the mind for the surronding community. Public space designed to “make peace with nature” so that users can feel comfortable while on the move.

Judges Feedback A simple idea with several sustainability features and considerations. Instead of "healing" deep trauma, focus on a socio-educational approach. It's different, and unique. A practical design that can be used in a variety of contexts. The material used might be reconsidered, and an alternative could be grabbed at the site of the incident. The floating design was used by the team to help flood survivors in dealing with their negative experiences with water. However, the possible trigger impact of the treatment hasn't been carefully considered, particularly for those who develop PTSD. In addition, the finalist may consider the safety of the design.
