NMSC recognizes eight from Class of 2013

Mock trial team finishes semifinalist. 2 go to state Hoban had two teams qualify for the Ohio State Mock Trial state tournament on March 9 in Columbus. Team Kagan, the regional champion, got to the final four of the state tournament before losing to the team from Orange High School. Hoban’s other team at the state tournament, Team Powell advanced as far as the final eight before losing on Friday morning. Only 26 teams from the state qualified. Both teams competing at the regional level advanced. Outstanding attorney and witness awards are posted on the Hoban website www.hoban.org/ academic clubs/mock trial.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized eight Hoban seniors in its 58th annual competition—four finalists and four commended students. Those recognized are: Front: Finalists Sam Smartnick, Tony Burns, Lauren Whitehouse and Matt Onders. Back: Commended Students Katherine Geary, James Marrter, Andrew Udovich and Kristin Sanchez. (Sanchez was also named a 2012-13 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.)

Pantastics perform with Harry Belafonte at Civic

The Hoban’s Knights Pantastic steel drum band was one of five steel drum ensembles to perform with legendary entertainer Harry Belafonte at the Akron Civic Theatre on Nov. 17. Belafonte was the keynote speaker at the event, which benefited the Steel Dragons band of Summit Academy, a charter school catering to the needs of students with Asperger’s syndrome and autism.

Team Kagan, was the Ohio State Mock Trial state semifinalist. Flanked by advisers Dan Cody and Kevin Hillery, the team consists of Travis Pero, Matt Rossi, Trey Lesiak, Jamie Vieson, Sam Hyde, Anna Baumhoer, Peter Kratcoski and Ryan Kupcik.

Team Powell finished third at the Ohio State Mock Trial regional competition and made it to the final eight at state. Mr. Peter Cahoon (adviser), Alexia Markowski, Halle Dreibelbis, Brianna Arman, Joseph van’t Hooft, Jonathan Sapp, Evan Nichols, Chelsea Schobert, Holly Sargent, Mr. Jeff Schobert (adviser).

Noteworthy • Easily exceeding the goal, students collected a record 55,055 units of nonperishable food for the hungry in this year’s canned food drive. Again this year, the seniors led the school in cans collected. Mr. Dan Simone’s first period religion class will receive the Golden Can award, given to the room with the highest total. The drive ran just two weeks: from Friday, Nov. 2, to Friday, Nov. 16.

• Senior Tony Burns received a Youth Award from the Catholic Commission of Summit County. Burns was recognized for his service at the South Street Ministries and the Catholic Worker’s Peter Maurin Center. • A contingent of 88 Hoban students and four faculty joined 13 students and three faculty from St. Edward High School in the March for Life in Washington to observe the 1973 Roe v.
