“T

he discernment of a vocation is above all the fruit of an intimate dialogue between the Lord and his disciples. Young people, if they know how to pray, can be trusted to know what to do with God’s call.” —Pope Benedict XVI, Response to questions by the bishops of the United States in Washington, D.C., April 16, 2008

Every year, a committee scours the alumni files to find a graduate deserving of the One Hope~One Dream award. This award is given annually to a Hoban graduate whose values, attitudes and behaviors exemplify how to live out a dream that brings hope to others. (see box for full explanation) It was decided this year’s award would recognize 12 men who have served the Catholic community of Northeast Ohio as priests. Ten of these Hoban graduates were ordained to serve the Diocese of Cleveland, one to serve the Diocese of Youngstown and one entered the religious order of the Society of Jesus and has spent most of his career as a teacher in Cleveland. These graduates, some being called to their vocation while at Hoban, have been priests as few as four years up to 45 years. Hoban has graduated a number of men who later entered the seminary. According to Hoban records, nationwide there are 20 priests and four seminarians (see list on page 16). The One Hope~One Dream all-school assembly was held Feb. 27 in the Barry Gymnasium. The assembly marked the end of Black History Month for the school. Following the assembly, the awardees met in the Holy Cross Room for a small reception. The biographies of the 12 recipients follows: Rev. John R. Hengle, Class of 1959, was ordained to the priesthood May 25, 1968. “In some ways I feel very much like Jeremiah, the reluctant prophet,” Father Hengle said. “Ministry has been very fulfilling, especially helping those who desire to return to Christ and the Church.” Father Hengle has served as a parochial vicar at St. Wenceslas (Maple Heights), Immaculate Conception (Kenmore), St. Albert the Great (North Royalton), St. Francis de Sales (Akron), St. Peter’s (Lorain) and St. Mary (Bedford), where he was later appointed pastor. In 1993, he returned to the Akron area to serve as pastor at Our Lady of Victory Parish in Tallmadge. He has served the diocese on the Presbyteral Council and as a judge on the Diocesan Tribunal 2nd Instance as well as serving on other committees for the diocese. He taught religion for a year at Holy Name High School in Cleveland. “Hoban helped prepare me for my further studies,” Father Hengle said. “Being on the work crew under Joe Scaduto helped give me a real work ethic. I enjoyed being in the marching band and concert band. Both gave me a greater appreciation for life and music.”

Rev. John M. Kumse, Class of 1971, was ordained June 9, 1979, in Cleveland. “In a word, my vocation is my life,” Father Kumse said. “It has provided me with a great opportunity to broaden my understanding and appreciation of the diversity within the Church and the Faith that unites us all. It has been at times both a challenge and a blessing and a great opportunity to minister to God’s people, sometimes in the most unexpected ways. Sharing in the priesthood of Christ is both humbling and a source of joy to bring the presence of our Lord and the care of his Church to so many people in so many different aspects of their lives.”

One Hope~One Dream award criteria The award is given annually to Hoban graduates whose values, attitudes and behaviors exemplify how to live out a dream that brings hope to others. The award recalls Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and incorporates the Holy Cross motto, “Spes Unica,” which means “The Cross, Our Only Hope.” ”Spes Unica,” the motto of the Congregation of Holy Cross, translates “One Hope.” The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for his “I Have a Dream” speech. Each February Hoban presents the One Hope-One Dream award to a graduate whose values, attitudes and behaviors exemplify how to live out a dream that brings hope to others. The recipients must meet four criteria: s Hoban graduates whose work or activities bring hope to others. s Persons whose work or activities help build the Kingdom of God by bringing Jesus’ teachings to life in the world. s Persons who, like Dr. King, have been an inspiration and example to others in the community in living a dream that brings hope to others. s Persons whose speech and action model the ideals of justice, love and peace taught by Jesus and modeled by King.
