ARTIST TALK & BRUNCH CLOSING RECEPTION: Saturday, September 20th, 11AM-3PM

Lexie Bouwsma The Rich and Creamy

Cheese stacked precariously on a raft. It looks like it will fall, but it won’t. It looks like the morning has been saved by the discovery of unexpired cream. It isn’t. And what is going on with the vegetable people? We just don’t know. Things are coming unglued on a base, animalistic level—people pushed to the edge of themselves, behaving desperately within the context of abundance. Embedded within this logic is the consideration of chance. When I pour water on my drawings, I can’t control the water, but I try to collaborate with it. I work with ink on paper, playing with chance of something happening between small pen marks and loose gestural strokes. I use sticks, brushes, and syringes to influence the movement of ink and water. The water soaks into the fibers of the paper causing it to tense and relax, making the surface buckle into hills and pools, which continue to change as they slowly dry.

Barbara Kleinhans Passages Passages is a series of painted colorscapes reminiscent of the Wisconsin countryside of my childhood. Blended colors and blurred horizon lines are my interpretation of the passing of time but also a sense of standing still. I use painting knives to apply and manipulate the paint directly on the canvas. I like working with painting knives because of the variety of surfaces that can be achieved and how I can build up a minimalist composition. Most of my paintings have between five to ten thick layers of paint that I use to create texture, depth and a bit of history and mystery to the work.

Michael McConnell Fairytale Threesomes Making art is how I make sense of the world and my forgotten childhood. Observing my own anxieties and awkwardness I create visual narratives that examine loneliness, responsibility, and choice. In my work the innocence and vulnerability of children and animals is constrained. The stories unfold in the space between memory and nostalgia, and focus on the tension between youth and maturity. Here, I have been exploring how we assign animals human characteristics, and use them to represent in fairytales and fables. This series is exploring threesomes in common children stories and nursery rhymes.

Mark Paron

My sculpture is abstract and conceptual--inspired by micro biotic, organic, and synthetic things we come in contact with each day. I work in a varied range of materials including fabric, metal, rubber, plastic, wood, paper, and more. Though I have no formal training, I have been creating artwork ever since I was a child growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan . In November of 1984, I moved to San Francisco and started showing my work. I have exhibited my work in many San Francisco’s premier galleries, stores, bars, and schools as well as in the DeYoung and City Hall.

Silvia Poloto Hard Candy This series is a fun exploration of the long rectangular shape. Though the panels are often visualized vertically, they can successfully be turned horizontally. The viewer is allowed to be part of the process of creation by turning and configuring the panels together as they imagine them. For this series, I collage, paint and draw on wood panels. To produce the glossy surface, resin is poured on top to penetrate deep into the layers. The high gloss surface makes the colors intense and vibrant. Fun for fun’s sake.

Lucky Rapp Sheep The Sheep series concept came from a vintage black and white cutting board and was first exhibited in 2011 at Gallery 35 in Mannheim Germany, in a solo show ‘Counting Sheep’ that consisted of a herd of 35 individually numbered black and white sheep running across a wall. Additional pieces in this series include Sheep in the Night; Follow Me; C’est moi, C’est tois; Traum; Reve and Dream. Lucky Rapp is a San Francisco based visual artist with a background in both fashion and art. Her self-taught style is often characterized as being text-based. Her methodology incorporates layers of resin, paint and acrylic forms that create texture and depth within the dialogue of her work. Lucky’s approach is process-oriented and physical. The end result, combines inquisitive statements that play with both language and the potency of graphical communication, while the three-dimensional nature of the layered resin fosters a sculptural reflective quality.

Eric Rewitzer Park Views As a printmaker, Eric Rewitzer must employ a number of different skills, adding carving and printing to more familiar disciplines of drawing, composition, and color. Combining this discipline with the inspirations of the modern day – urban life, diversity, and the citizen’s attachment to the natural world – has been the foundation of Eric’s artistic exploration for years. The resulting prints are an interplay between natural and urban landscapes. Rewitzer was born in Flint, Michigan, and grew up in western part of the Great Lakes State in a small town called North Muskegon. Rewitzer landed in San Francisco in 1997, and found his home in the outer avenues of the Richmond District of San Francisco. In 2006, Eric and his wife, Annie Galvin, also an artist, founded 3 Fish Studios, creating a dedicated space where they can make and show their artwork, as well as teach classes, host events, and showcase the talents of other local artists. Located just off Ocean Beach in the Outer Sunset District, 3 Fish Studios has been warmly welcomed into the the community, cultivating a collaborative process of creating and sharing art, surrounded by the vibrancy of creative people sharing ideas. It has resulted in Rewitzer’s artwork being included in public and private collections around the world, and available through outlets like the California Historical Society, the SFMOMA store, and the Bay Area Discovery Museum Three Fish Studios 4541 irving St. San Francisco CA 94122

Fernando Reyes A Colorful Gesture My painting series “A Colorful Gesture “ are based on quick sketch drawings from the model. These paintings can be characterized as being joyful, fun, dynamic, and poetic. I’ve felt compelled to draw the human figure for about as long as I can remember. I see particular beauty in the strength and sensuality of the human form. Drawing regularly from live models allows me to depict the beauty of anatomy, proportion, balance and movement. The traditional methodology, however, produces works that are completely contemporary. Thematically my work is very much about how our body movements tell tories, through conscious and unconscious signals, typically with greater eloquence than what verbal communication allows.
