A special look behind the scenes of Samjad Stud in Lebanon A stunning snow-white stallion from most special bloodlines is causing a great stir to the Arabian horse breeding market. Continuing the legacy of his famous ancestors, ZT Magnofantasy is set to make a difference to the world. The ethereal eleven-year-old stallion has that wonderful attitude that makes you stop and look at him whenever he enters a presentation ring. But above all, his unique pedigree with double El Shaklan in combination with the straight Egyptian blood of Shaikh al Badi gives him the genetic power of a supersire. Bred in Argentina, the striking stallion is now flying the flag for his new home - the Samjad Arabian Stud of Lebanon. There he joins the newly established yet fast developing breeding program of the Samjad family - adding his unique qualities to carefully selected high-class mares, unparalled in the region for the years to come.
After all, the first law school worldwide is said to have been in Beirut and the first alphabet was created by Cadmus in the Lebanese city of Byblos. Since the end of the Lebanese civil war in 1990, the city has become a lively and modern metropolis. Some remains of the civil war are still visible, but the natural beauty of the Mediterranean Sea and the proximity of the mountains combined with the contagious atmosphere of different cultures, politics, business, lifestyle and of course the amazing Lebanese food touch the soul. Lebanon is more than just interesting and anyone who has been there has fallen in love with the diversity of its culture, the richness of its history and the welcoming and warm hearted nature of its people. “To the stern student of affairs, Beirut is a phenomenon, beguiling perhaps, but quite, quite impossible.” Jan Morris (Welsh historian and travel writer)
We came for a special look behind the scenes… Arriving in Beirut is like travelling to another world. Lebanon’s capital is one of the oldest cities in the world with a history that stretches back around 5.000 years. Beirut was destroyed and rebuilt seven times - and is therefore often compared to the Phoenix. The city has undergone many cultural changes and progressions throughout its long history.
During all the captivating ancient times, horses played a particularly important role in Lebanon. Today there are more and more Arabian horses that return to this country they share a deep history with. To get to the unique and amazingly built farm of Samjad Stud, one has to leave the busy city of Beirut and travel further south. Located on the hillside overlooking the Eastern Mediterranean Sea on the coast of Lebanon, the 3
Samjad family built a well designed and beautiful stud facility that sits on nearly 40 hectares of magnificent property. The farm is developed and equipped with a keen eye on providing the best care for the horses. Currently a horse clinic of the highest standards is being built - with the most advanced technologies available for artificial insemination, embryo transfers and reproduction. From the very beginning, Samjad had a clear vision: To establish a breeding program with special blood lines and pedigrees as a strong foundation to breed the best Arabians in the region. In the past years, Samjad managed to acquire a collection of the finest mares and stallions, carefully handpicked from around the world. Standing at stud in Lebanon is the impressive Riyadh AM, a bay son of world champion Abha Qatar and Dana Mohamadia (by Ajman Moniscione), bred by the Al Mohamadia Arabian Horse Stud. This young stallion already has a remarkable show carrer. In 2015 he was Gold Champion Yearling Colt in Abu Dhabi, Silver Champion Yearling Colt in Sharjah and TOP TEN at the World Championships in Paris. This spring he won the gold medal at the Lebanese Arabian Horse Championship in Beirut as well. He is destined to have a great impact on the Lebanese Arabian horse breeding. «We know the stallions are the ones drawing the attention of the people, but our mares are the corner pillar of our breeding program as they pass on their traits for generations», says the owner of Samjad Stud. Among the mares grazing on the fields in Lebanon are such gems as the fleabitten beauty Alfabia Kiyama (Phaaros x April Carol by Parys el Jamaal). Deriving from mostly Egyptian bloodlines of supersires such as Anaza 4
el Farid with the classical touch of Jamil and Kaisoon and added with a Polish/Russian shot of Gdansk and Bask, she is a genetic asset that will cross well with stallions from different bloodlines. Her stable mate Lagonda Alfabia is a very elegant young mare that at just 5 years of age recently won the Silver medal at the Lebanese Arabian Horse Championship. Her father Alfabia Sheib is a son of world famous producer WH Justice and her mother ZT Fantmelie is a granddaughter of El Shaklan. In cooperation with Philip Looyens of Privilege SFQ in Belgium, mares were chosen that bring that certain extra to the farm. Such as the snow-white granddaughter of Worldchampion Escape Ibn Navarrone-D Tahity bint Salar. The now 11-year-old mare has a very special and sweet character and also that ‹Look-at-me’ attitude as well as a striking movement that makes her irresistible to anyone who sees her. These three outstanding mares are joined by high class broodmares out of modern show lines such as the Thee Desperado daughter FS Thee Cinderella (out of Christina JD by Padrons Psyche), the Marwan al Shaqab daughter Bohemia Alfabia (out of Alfabia Sheba by Padrons Immage) and the fairy tale horse AJ Ambers Ajman - who is not only a direct daughter of WH Justice but also carries the blood of her most famous mother, world champion Psyches Amber Gem. Also the german-bred Mahity Mardana (AJ Mardan x Mahity el Jamaal) is currently growing up at the beautiful facilities of Samjad stud until she is old enough to join the broodmare stable. The highly reputable program of Count Frederico Zichy Thyssen has a valuable impact on the breeding ideas of the Samjad stud. The strong-bodied Zichy-Thyssen mare ZT
of the straight Egyptian beauty and Egyptian Event champion Itlalah Albadeia (Simeon Sharav x Sondos Albadeia by Farid Albadeia) and therefore represents some of the finest breeding lines of the world famous Albadeia Stud from Egypt. A blend between fantasy and reality - ZT Magnofantasy
Obsession (by ZT Marwteyn) is closely related to the ethereal beauty WN Fawn Obsession and therefore a real treasure in Lebanon. Travelling back to Belgium you find more of the carefully selected treasures of Samjad stud farm with roots in Argentina, such as ZT Rida and Alfabia Genziana, who are both half sisters to chief sire ZT Magnofantasy, through their father ZT Magnanimus. While Rida carries a very interesting mother line with ZT Rumidusah being a half sister to the well known Zichy Thyssen stallion ZT Faaiq, Alfabia Genziana traces back to the equally impressive Argentinian National Champion ZT Maggasfa. The broodmare band is developing further and further under the keen eye of the Samjad family, manager Benjamí Vilà and trainer Philip Looyens. Recently, the promising broodmare Yaqootah Albadeia was added to the Samjad breeding program. This grey daughter of Champion producer WH Justice comes from an excellent dam line. She is the daughter
The close collaboration with Privilege SFQ in Belgium made it possible that a unique stallion could be acquired. That very special horse that sets a strong mark on the Samjad breeding program right from the start is chief sire ZT Magnofantasy. It has only been three years since ZT Magnofantasy has found himself in the spotlight. And yet Arabian horse breeders already know - this is where he belongs. Reason enough to take a closer look at this once-in-a-lifetime horse, who is about to make an indelible mark in the Arabian breed. ZT Magnofantasy has a very exclusive pedigree. He combines the best bloodlines of different horse worlds as he traces back to Russian, Spanish, Egyptian, Polish and American breeding. Through his father line, he carries the blood of horse legends like El Shaklan and Magnums Psyche - through his mother line El Shaklan comes together with the Egyptian touch of Shaikh al Badi. With this unique combination ZT Magnofantasy is the top of decades of Zichy Thyssens Arabian horses breeding. Magnofantasy’s father ZT Magnanimus does not only have a remarkable show career - he was reserve champion at the Scottsdale Show in 2003 and Gold Champion Colt in Menton - but was also well known as the sire of some very special offspring throughout the world. Through his sire AB Magnum he combines the three world famous stallions Magnum Psyche, 5
Padrons Psyche and Aladdin. Through his mother ZT Shakmontelite, El Shaklan enters Magnofantasy’s pedigree - one of the greatest stallions the world has ever seen. Magnofantasy carries that special El Shaklan influence twice in his remarkable pedigree. His mother ZT Fantmaisa is a daughter of one of the most successful El Shaklan sons: ZT Shakfantasy. But Fantmaisa also adds that special extra to the pot, as through her mother AK el Maisa she traces back to the straight Egyptian stallion Shaikh al Badi, a son of Morafic and the sire of many influential horses around the world such as Ruminaja Ali. To have El Shaklan in the pedigree is a very good foundation for a breeding stallion. You can see his influence on Magnofantasy to a wide degree - he is tall, possesses a strong body and is well balanced - combined with big dark eyes, short ears and a high set tail. His straight Egyptian ancestors added the exotic face and that special Egyptian look to the horse. And this is what Magnofantasy is siring. «I don’t buy a stallion as a short term solution», says the owner of Samjad Stud in Lebanon. «We have a vision of what we would like to breed. Our goal is to look beyond today and keep all the future possibilities in our mind. We are proud to say that ZT Magnofantasy is different and we are convinced that he will mark his offspring through his genetic force with just the best elements an Arabian horse should have.» His first offspring is outstanding. The foals possess some of the most desirable qualities of the Arabian horse. They have the large dark eyes of their Spanish ancestors, tight small ears and beautifully set necks and above all that certain elegant attitude that makes people stop and look at them. 6
Magnofantasy already proved to produce great offspring from mares with all different pedigrees. Well-known farms like the Alfabia Stud in Italy, Al Shiraa Arabians of Abu Dhabi, Ses Planes of Spain and Le Soleil Stud of Italy have already used the powerful stallion on their high class broodmares and are more than happy with the results. At eleven years of age the magnificent white stallion is steadily taking his place among the top stallions in the world today not in the show rings - but as a sire. Above all, his exquisite daughter Elizia Alfabia is ready to make the name of her proud owners world famous. This very typey filly is out of the WH Justice daughter Alfabia Gaia. She is a real lady, refined with a very feminine expression. Last year she made her first steps into the European show rings and won the Bronze medal at the international show in Bruges - and now she is ready to become one of the most treasured broodmares of the whole farm. This year marks a new chapter of the Samjad-history books. The first homebred foals of Magnofantasy are growing up beautifully and prove their outstanding quality in Lebanon and Europe. The bay yearling filly Pralia Samjad (out of Alfabia Kiyama) will be kept for the Samjad breeding program. With Badi Samjad they have a promising colt out of AJ Ambers Ajman and the Samjad team also keeps an eye on the very special filly Hawazen Samjad (Excalibur EA x Tahity bint Salar). The fabulous mares of Samjad Stud are now again in foal to some of the best stallions in the world, such as EKS Alihandro, RFI Farid and of course ZT Magnofantasy, who is standing at stud at Privilege SFQ in Belgium.
