Comments From The Editor

There are two things I’m hearing a lot about these days. One is, of course, U.S. Nationals, and the other is making a positive difference in the breed. It occurred to me that this year, the U.S. Nationals and positive thinking are made for each other. AHA’s Convention is November 14-17, so if you are one who is committed to making a difference, why not try to find a few minutes to talk to others about it? Tulsa would be a great place to have face-to-face discussions, not on the Internet or in the pages of a magazine, on all the suggestions we’ve heard. I know, everyone is very busy, but few people other than the professionals work 24/7. Conversations in the grandstands and the barn aisles, at lunch and dinner—whenever there is a moment—are a great opportunity to evaluate ideas and advocate viewpoints even before delegates head out to the Convention. If everyone keeps it positive, talking about all the good ideas cannot help but make the whole show more positive as well. We can imagine a great future for the Arabian horse. Now, let us use the U.S. Nationals as a springboard for change at Convention.

Jullye Al Gazal XX is no accident. You might say she was a twinkle in her breeder’s eye when he got into Arabians a dozen years ago. Larry Schopf of Twin X Arabians in Madison, Wis., is not unacquainted with success in the Arabian business; his first major trophy with a horse he bred came in 2005, when he led Magical Toi XX, already a U.S. National Top Ten, to the Scottsdale Half-Arabian Gelding In-Hand Stock/Hunter Championship. Then in 2007, he purchased Canadian National Top Ten Filly Olivia D and showed her to the amateur owner championships at Scottsdale and the U.S. Nationals. And there have been others, purchases and homebreds, that have put awards on his record and furthered his knowledge of Arabians. But none have represented so clearly what he wanted to breed as the yearling filly Jullye Al Gazal XX, who burst on the scene at Scottsdale to score a unanimous victory as International Champion Junior Filly. “When she walks into the arena, she’s captivating,” says trainer Keith Krichke, who led Jullye that day. “There is a look about her when she starts to get a high on; I’ve had lots of very good yearlings and some great ones, but there is something unique about what this one does. “I remember when I brought her out of the barn for Sheila Varian,” he continues, “and Sheila just said, ‘Oh, my word.’ And when I was going down the chute into the arena at Vegas— literally, the Brazilian trainers were walking along beside me. 40 | A r A BI A N HOr SE T I MES

They were not standing back, saying, ‘That looks great, Keith;’ they were actually walking beside me, watching her. It’s not that she is just a proud Arabian. There is a different flavor about the whole thing. ‘Sensual’ is a good word for her.” The story of Jullye Al Gazal XX begins in 2008 with her dam, Beautiful Juell V. With his advisors and friends Dan and Judy Lynch, Schopf attended the Varian Arabians Summer Jubilee, and after the weekend, the three sat down with Varian to discuss the Twin X breeding goals. Schopf had learned that programs which were successful long term were anchored by a strong tail female line, and he was searching for a mare who could fill that role for him. Varian responded by showing them 3-yearold Beautiful Juell V; by Jullyen El Jamaal and out of Bint Balalinka, she represented one of the strongest damlines in production today. Varian sketches the heritage. “The mare that became our foundation mare through her tail female line was *Bachantka, sired by Wielki Szlem, out of Balalajka,” she says. “Balalajka was considered the finest mare in Poland, and besides *Bachantka, she also produced Bandola, who was called the ‘Queen of Poland’ and was the dam of the great stallion *Bask. We bred *Bachantka to *Bask and produced Balalinka, who we then bred to Huckleberry Bey, with the resulting filly Bint Balalinka V. We then bred

her to Jullyen El Jamaal and produced Beautiful Juell V. Beautiful Juell V is the fourth generation in the direct female line to *Bachantka.” Every one of those generations had been successful at stud. “Beautiful Juell V came into the presentation paddock with such confidence that I knew I needed to find a way to own her,” Schopf relates. “I did, and we brought her back to Madison.” It did not hurt that Beautiful Juell V’s pedigree was not only historic but also current, Judy Lynch points out. Juell’s sire, Jullyen El Jamaal, is popular now, which increases the marketability of her foals, and also, he is out of Jullye El Ludjin, considered one of the most beautiful mares in Brazil and herself the representative of a strong damline. The immediate challenge was to determine a sire for Beautiful Juell V’s first foal, and the team made the decision at the 2009 Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction. They were interested in the Gazal Al Shaqab line, specifically a rising young star, and when Gazal’s son SF Veraz trotted into the ring, their selection became easy. Owned by Patti Scheier, SF Veraz was only 3 at the time, but he already had a presence of his own. Again, the pedigree reflected not only exceptional stallion power, but influential females as well: SF Veraz’s dam is the U.S. National Champion Futurity Filly Veronica GA, and just a few generations away are Kajora, *Edjora, *Bint Magidaa, *Deenaa and Precious As Gold—a matriarchal dream team—as well. Their confidence was not misplaced. In 2010, Beautiful Juell V foaled a colt Schopf named Juell Al Veraz XX, who showed with Keith Krichke to a Scottsdale Top Ten in International Arabian Breeders Yearling Colts, a regional championship, and a U.S. National Top Ten in Yearling Colts. He is now maturing at Dan Lynch Farms while his sister takes center stage. Rebred to SF Veraz, Beautiful Juell V produced Jullye Al Gazal XX in February 2011. Right away, Schopf knew he had something special. “With great conformation, extreme confidence, and a sweet disposition, she has been the highlight of my breeding program,” he says simply. “Every time she went out, she had an air of superiority,” Judy Lynch adds. “She definitely has a ‘wow’ factor.” When the time came, the filly was sent to Keith Krichke for halter schooling, which, they report, she handled like a pro—so well that the decision was made to send her to Scottsdale for the competitive International classes.

Judy Lynch recalls the evening she showed. “It was a perfect night; we were so proud when Jullye led Keith into the ring. The arena was hers—the buzz started in the crowd. Jullye was on. She walked away with the Gold in the yearling class, and then came the Junior Championship. All eyes were on her as she again led Keith into the ring. Her tail over her back, her tulip ears and dark, luminous eyes taking it all in. She was not to be denied. The crowd couldn’t take their eyes off her. Then the moment came and she was named the unanimous Gold Champion, and everyone knew they were watching one of the finest young fillies in the Arabian industry start her career. It was a very proud moment for us, and the validation of the Twin XX breeding program.” The icing on the cake was that Sheier Farms had scheduled a presentation of SF Veraz that evening, which drew further attention to both the filly and her sire. “There have been many times when I have seen Jullye’s special qualities and personality,” says Schopf. “But the most special had to be at Scottsdale, with her unanimous wins. With the SF Veraz presentation, and the subsequent crowd reactions at her presentation at the Krichke and Ted Carson Open Barns, it was a proud night and week.” In all the hoopla of her conformation and show presence, it might be easy to lose sight of Jullye’s day-to-day personality, but for Schopf, that is an integral part of her value. “She’s very sweet,” he says. “In addition to the normal breeding goals of bloodlines and conformation, I look for horses that are easy to handle, intelligent and have that disposition.” That too is part of her damline, a tenet of the Varian program, bred into Beautiful Juell V. There is also a performance career to think of, he observes. “Juell Al Veraz XX will be a fantastic western horse. I don’t know what Jullye’s performance career will look like—probably any one of a number of things, based on her movement.” With sales to Brazil, Canada and the Middle East, Larry Schopf has streamlined his broodmare band now to have just Beautiful Juell V and a few other individuals. The plan is to have two to three foals a year. He would like to keep the Arabian population to around 10, he says, but he’s well aware that when one comes along like Jullye Al Gazal XX, reason sometimes flies out the window. “The certainty of Jullye Al Gazal XX becoming a great broodmare is unquestionable,” Sheila Varian says. “She has already proven herself in the show ring as the Gold Medal winner in the Scottsdale International Junior Championship. The mare line of *Bachantka continues to prove the importance of the tail female line in producing top quality consistently.” n Volume 43, No. 5 | 41

Step By Step to a

Brighter Future by Lori Davisson

Wow! A column in Arabian Horse Times! How did this all happen? Where do I begin? Let me introduce myself to everyone. My name is Lori Davisson, and I am a Special Education Coordinator for a high school district in McHenry, Ill. I have been doing this for 30-plus years, and am getting ready to retire in May 2013. I have also been involved in the Arabian horse industry since buying my first gelding from Lasma in 1977. In August, while watching the Saddlebred World’s Championships, I had an idea. I thought to myself, ‘H’m, after I retire, wouldn’t it be fun to do some volunteer work with the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) to help bring some of the excitement I am seeing at World’s to our National Show?’ I saw a post on a friend’s Facebook® page right at this time. On it, he named the top six things he thought were great about World’s. Those ideas were very similar to what I was thinking. So we chatted and decided to make a Facebook® Group about ways to promote some positive change in our wonderful breed. I started the Group and titled it “Promoting ‘Postive’ Change for the Arabian Breed,” spelling error unintentional. Did you know that once a Facebook® Group has 250 members, you can’t change its title? Believe me, we tried! I invited some of my Arabian owning “friends” on Facebook® (about 100 of them) to join me in the Group so we could have a discussion on what we thought would be positive, fun ways to help make the U.S. National Championships the best they could be. Well, those 100 friends told their friends who told their friends, and now, this Group has over 2,500 members! The goal of this page is to provide a place to have ideas shared and heard by any and all people who embrace this wonderful breed.

There are six administrators of the Group, and we all monitor the page to be sure no one is using it for negative reasons. We all feel very strongly that there is enough of that in cyberspace. We wanted to provide a safe place for everyone to express their views and know that there is no bullying allowed. The only rule we have is, all ideas have to be presented with a solution. No complaining, but what are the action steps needed to solve the problem. Soon, “I” became “we,” and we are now dedicated to keeping lines of communication open and positive with all members of this Group. To go back to the beginning, what were my original thoughts? I started this Group with the thought that I would post my ideas and we could all discuss:

1. Changing the picture taking procedures at Nationals so the show was the focus. 2. Classes being pinned. 3. Later start time. 4. Fewer divisions, with a grand championship for all divisions. 5. Having a goal for the show, and knowing what that goal is. 6. Giving prizes, maybe small ones, but prizes, to exhibitors. 7. Having a charity to “give back to,” promoted by the U.S. Nationals. I put this in a document on the page, and included my solutions to these ideas. I also put out there that I am more than willing to volunteer my time, after I retire, to work on any of these areas. Little did I know what would come of these thoughts!

Glenn Petty has continually asked us how AHA can help. To be honest, I think it is really great that AHA wants our insight! One little Facebook® Group, being heard by the leaders of the Arabian Horse Association! I am hoping that each month, we can dedicate a column to a different group that wants to present their ideas. I will say that AHA has been very supportive of anything we have presented to them. We have heard, “Yes, we can do that” more than we ever thought we would. If there has been a “no” answer to anything we have asked, it has always been backed with a good reason. There have been conference calls on things that are even in the works for the 2012 U.S. Nationals! Wear your pretty clothes, get ready to walk the Red Carpet with interviews and parties galore! Bring on the glam, because we are hoping this year’s U.S. Nationals will be the first step in helping AHA be the best it can be!

All of a sudden, I was getting calls, texts, e-mails, and Facebook® messages from people all over the country! From leaders at AHA to single horse owners who loved that their voices were being heard, to Arabian Horse Times asking me to write a column! The ideas started flowing and people wanted to see where they could go to get their ideas listened to. I got a phone call from Hilary Nixon at AHA! Seems like the office in Denver had begun to hear about our little Facebook® Group! Hilary asked what AHA could do to help any ideas get heard by the right people in the organization.

Soon there were committees of people who were dedicated to working on areas that are dear to their hearts. Some want to add AATR divisions, some want to bring back the glamour to Nationals, many want prize money programs implemented, marketing increased, lowered fees, Select rider rules; there were Sport Horse riders who want to be heard, breeders who want to keep their identities, and so many more areas that I never even dreamed of. Many people have been taking the lead and starting action plans and solutions to areas that they see as ways to make our breed the best it can be. Our motto has been, “Baby Steps.” Take it slow, and every step we take is a step forward. We are devoted

David Boggs’ heartfelt desire has become his life’s work. Over the past 30 years, he has traveled the world from Paris, France, to Pewaukee, Wisc., from Dubai City, Dubai, to Des Moines, Iowa, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Santa Inez, Calif.; David has visited every continent where Arabian horses live. Along the way, he has met members of royal families, rulers of nations, aristocrats, titans of industry, movie stars, and rock stars. However, his favorite people are those who love the Arabian horse—breeders, trainers, grooms, those who own Arabian horses and those who dream of the possibility, especially the children.

I can see their pride in their accomplishment – it’s very rewarding! “Generally, if I see a horse that really impresses me, I am confident that I can find a buyer for it. If it’s a horse I would want to own for myself, then I know I can work with it—even if it’s not conditioned or trained. For me, finding a diamond in the rough is often the most exciting opportunity. Taking a horse that has unrealized potential and developing it into a show ring superstar is a fantastic experience. It really doesn’t get much better than that.”

As people took notice of David’s accomplishments, more and more of them turned to him for his expertise. This swell of interest brought some very special horses into his life. Some people describe a horse that has a profound influence on them as their “once-in-a-lifetime” horse. David met a “once-in-a-lifetimehorse” when he was introduced to the great stallion *Padron. Together they made history and shaped the future of the Arabian horse breed. David showed *Padron to the Arabian “Triple Crown”—the Scottsdale, Canadian and U.S. National Championship titles. Then, in 1983, David syndicated the stallion for a record breaking $11 million dollars. He completed the unimaginable feat in just 90 days. Equally important, David created and implemented the plan that enabled *Padron to become one of the most successful and influential sires in the history of the breed. Throughout the years, hard work and talent proved to be the keys to success for David Boggs. It seems that each of his accomplishments created new opportunities. Year after year, with each show ring win and satisfied client, David Boggs built Midwest Training Centre into a thriving business. His success David Boggs and *Padron

in the show ring attracted the best of the best in the breed, and people from around the world brought their superstar horses to Midwest to be shown and marketed. People everywhere want to be associated with excellence, and in the Arabian horse industry, the pinnacle of excellence was found at Midwest. Strolling along the pristine aisleways and looking into the sunlit stables was like walking into Tiffany’s. Each filly and colt, each mare and stallion were glittering gems among the breed. Access to great horses like these created a market that brought buyers from around world to

Midwest. By the end of the decade, the names of David Boggs and Midwest were synonymous with the highest levels of show ring and marketing success in the Arabian horse industry. David’s success with *Padron was not a one-time stroke of luck. David marketed Padron’s son, Padrons Psyche as a 3-yearold, showed him to the title of 1991 U.S. National Reserve Champion Stallion (the youngest horse in the history of the breed at the time to win that title), and then marketed the stallion again—all the while promoting him as a sire and helping to

create the next generation of Arabian horse superstars. It takes an owner with a deep passion, as well as the resources to care for a world-class stallion and sire of influence such as Padrons Psyche. David found the perfect match with Dixie and Bob North of North Arabians, who owned and cared for Psyche for more than 10 years. Under their stewardship, Padrons Psyche was able to achieve his ultimate destiny as one of the leading sires of the Arabian horse breed on a global basis. Following in the success of Psyche came his very special son, Magnum. A stallion as incomparable as Magnum Psyche deserved an owner who understood his potential, who could accept the

responsibility and embrace the experience of owning and caring for one of the most important Arabian stallions of our generation. The father and son team of Fernando and Joaquin de Santibanes possessed the desire, the dedication, and the ability to provide every opportunity for Magnum Psyche to achieve his full potential. It, too, was a perfect match. Magnum Psyche proved his show ring potential with his stunning physical excellence and earned five National Championship titles in halter. However, his most important achievement took place in the breeding barn. Several years later, in 2003, David brought another superstar stallion into the lives of Dan and Maureen Grossman—the breathtaking, bay, yearling colt named DA Valentino. David saw the potential and believed wholeheartedly in the possibility of this colt. The Grossmans knew they could depend on David’s expertise, and they were not disappointed. DA Valentino earned six national championship titles. Then tragedy struck, and we had to mourn our loss of this great stallion and all that he meant to the Arabian breed. At just 8 years old, DA Valentino was already one of the most successful sires of his generation. Another example of long-term success is Fernando and Joaquin de Santibanes, the owners of the international superstar, Magnum Psyche. David facilitated the sale of Magnum Psyche to Fernando and Joaquin in 1997 and sold an unheard of number of breedings to the colt when he was still just a yearling. German or other european dining? And would that be fine dining, casual dining, a tavern, or maybe something family-friendly? Tulsa has excellent mexican restaurants, steak houses, barbecue joints, soup and salad, and vegetarian restaurants, and depending on your blood sugar reading, 27 irresistible bakeries and dessert shops.

Tulsa now has 1,474 restaurants, 296 more than it had in 2011. That will give U.s. nationals visitors a smorgasbord of dining opportunities equaled by few other cities of its size. Tulsa’s many sports, livestock, educational, cultural and historical events and attractions give other cities a run for their money because Tulsa’s diversity brings tourists who are almost as varied as the eateries they find awaiting them. Fortunately, local restaurant guides like the Urban spoon, Dining Guide Tulsa and the one the Tulsa Visitors’ and Convention bureau sends out have comprehensive listings. Do your taste buds crave burgers, pizza or good old, “Let’s grease down!” diner fare? How about some italian, Chinese, Japanese, mexican, Thai, indian, French,

ABUELO’S MEXICAN FOOD EMBASSY

Abuelo’s (“Grandfather’s” in English) is a chain, but their enchiladas de Cozumel, sizzling fajitas, tortilla soup, green chile stew, pechuga con calabaza, chilled seared tuna with honey lime dressing—to name a few items from their huge menu—are about as authentic as you can find, stateside. One house specialty is Mi Abuelo’s Manjar, or Grandfather’s favorite meal of three enchiladas stacked with beef, cheese and chile with meat, topped with two eggs. The Hibiscus is Tulsa’s only Caribbean restaurant. expensive, but the authentic menu will make you feel as if you’re in Jamaica. Their famous rum bar serves a variety of rums and cocktails. it offers fresh house salads with wonderful dressings and sauces, and the fried plantains, a.k.a. plantanos, or a sweet, perfectly ripe mango salad will delight. McGILL’S NORTH and McGILL’S ON 19

There are two locations for the top-drawer McGill’s restaurants. The one most convenient for horse showgoers is McGill’s North, one block west of Utica Square, at 1560 E. 21st St. It features terrific prime rib and steaks, as well as seafood. Dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday, and expect a full bar. (918) 742-8080. If you have time and want to drive to Catoosa, McGill’s On 19 is a feature of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, and the main attraction there is the beef and the celebrity entertainers. McNELLIE’S PUBLIC HOUSE

This has become one of Tulsa’s favorite pubs. It features fresh, reasonably priced food, served in a relaxed atmosphere, and families with young children are welcome. Try McNellie’s carburger, Mom’s sweet potato fries, a heavenly artichoke dip, Michael’s Maryland crab cakes, or Meg’s chicken finger platter. The View From CenTer ring U.S. Nationals Judge Van Jacobsen

Van Jacobsen is one of the Arabian breed’s renaissance men. He has shown in a variety of disciplines, has served as a ringman, judge, show manager, club president, regional director and AHA delegate. Not to mention, he has logged about 2,900 miles in endurance riding and completed the Tevis Cup on his first try. He has served on AHA’s Ethical Practices Review Board for 20 years, and has been its chair for the past 13. So you might say that when the horses come through the in-gate at U.S. Nationals later this month, no one can say that the tall, sandy-haired official in the halter arena is inexperienced.

Jacobsen, who now lives in Pine Island, Minn., got into the breed in 1970, and since then, he has never been without an Arabian or Half-Arabian. He has shown in a variety of divisions, and one of his early horses, U.S. National Reserve Champion Big Deal, was twice the American Horse Shows Association’s Arabian of the Year. Jacobsen even trained professionally for a couple of years, and observes that it was only when he had weighed the merits of depending on the horses for a living versus improving his chances of affording them forever that he opted for a legal career. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, he attended the William Mitchell College of Law and has been a practicing attorney for more than three decades. He now owns three geldings who live in his backyard barn. “I enjoy going out every morning and taking care of them, cleaning stalls,” he says. “That is my sanity before I come to work and deal with ‘people problems.’ I’ve got my beautiful Arabian horses to keep me grounded.” Jacobsen has been a licensed large ‘R’ (national-level) horse show judge for more than 25 years. Before this

year’s U.S. Nationals, he sat down with AHT to answer a few questions from a judge’s perspective.

As a judge, what do you see in the show ring that you might call a pet peeve? The biggest pet peeve I have is when the class is called and nobody comes into the ring. As a judge, my intent is always to be out there when the class is called. Everyone complains if the show runs long, and they usually blame the judge. For judges, there is a fine balance between giving everybody a chance to show their horse, but not spending too much time on every class. So we generally are very cognizant of how many classes we have to get done and in what timeframe, but the clock doesn’t start until the first horse enters the ring. For everybody’s benefit, we appreciate it if exhibitors will come on into the ring.

not trotting. It’s cantering, the gate has shut behind it, the class is underway and we’re judging. It is probably going to be penalized. Had the rider come in earlier and the horse broke into a canter, I would not be judging it; they could get their horse settled and by the time the gate shut, they would be fine. I assume that one reason some people come in last is to save their horse’s energy. We see some people come in earlier, stop their horse at some point of the ring, and wait for the rest of the class to get in because they don’t want to wear their horses out. It is not something I particularly encourage, but there is nothing illegal about it. Judging commences when the gate is closed.

Is refusing to come into the line-up a pet peeve as well? I like the horses to line up soon after they’re called, but it doesn’t have to be immediate. We’ve all seen classes where they go on too long after the line-up has been called. If you want to go around a couple of times, fine, but come into line after that. It’s all really about trying to keep the show moving.

It makes sense that everyone would want to do what’s best for the show, but can you put it in terms of how getting into the ring in a timely manner works best for the exhibitor? For instance, if you see a horse come through the gate looking like gangbusters, can you “pick your winner” at that moment?

The rules say judging does not commence until the gate is shut, so I wouldn’t say that I pick my winner when they come in the gate. However, for most horses, irrespective of division, I will say that the first ones in the ring are usually brighter. They’re using their ears, and horses that are attentive, especially when they’re in frame and doing what they’re supposed to be doing, are a prettier picture. Why wouldn’t you want the judge to see that (even if I’m not actually judging at that point)? Let me also put it in the context of being the last one in; some exhibitors, for whatever reason, want to be the last one in. One thing I’ve seen happen now and then is worth considering. Everyone is in the ring and waiting, and that last horse comes trotting in and the gate shuts right behind it—and the horse goes off its feet. Now it’s

In halter classes, of course you are able to give every horse a careful examination, but in a well-filled performance class, how much are you actually able to see? Even in a four horse class, if you have more than one judge, you’re not going to see everybody because the judges are watching different parts of the ring. I’ll glance around to make sure everybody is on the correct lead or something like that, but the deeper the competition—the more quality horses you have—if you’re really going to evaluate them, you’re going to be evaluating what’s in Volume 43, No. 5 | 131

your line of sight at the time. There is absolutely no doubt that you may not be seeing what can be happening in another section of the ring, and that’s something people have to recognize. I make a point of giving everybody a look—a legitimate look. Even if I know that a horse isn’t rising to the top of the class, it deserves a look. And not just a glance; it deserves to be looked at, just like anybody else. That may confirm that it’s not at the top of my class, but I still look at it. You don’t just pick the ones you think are best and look only at them, although sometimes it may be necessary, for instance, to make a comparison between two for a particular placing.

What would you say to exhibitors about ring position? You want to be seen, but you don’t need to be hugging the middle. People have a tendency to ride the middle, because they think that’s all the judges will see, but that makes the ring smaller. For example, Canada has a smaller ring, so when people start riding the middle and cutting off the turns, they’re cutting 30 or 40 feet off the end of the arena. Don’t think that gives the judge a better view, because we can’t get a good view of a horse that is too close to us.

There is also the issue of safety. I’ve never actually been run over, but I’ve definitely had to get out of an exhibitor’s way, usually because a horse was not in control or reacting to something happening in the ring. What makes me nervous is that if horses are cutting close to me, and there is a horse on the outside of them that all of the sudden jumps or swishes its tail or something, the reaction of the horses closest is to jump too. They’re going to land right on you. That’s why it is not safe to ride too close to the judges. You might think you are in control of your horse, but you’re not in control of a horse on the outside of you. And think about it: as exhibitors, you want the judge to be looking at the horses. You don’t want them to be worrying about whether they need to move out of the way. So, just watch the other horses in the ring and position yourself to your best advantage, but remember that that doesn’t necessarily mean being closer to the judge.

Does show attire make any difference in how you see a horse and exhibitor team? I’m judging the horses and I really don’t pay attention to the attire. Unless the attire is extremely bad or really ill-fitting, I’m not going to notice it. So, if your attire complements your horse and is not distracting, that is

the ultimate goal, in my opinion. It is a horse show, not a people show. How the horse looks is another matter. A horse that is well-conditioned and clean, with a good hair coat, makes for a better picture. Periodically we’ll see horses that are simply under-conditioned—underweight, under body tone, not in physical shape to be doing what they’re doing. That doesn’t make a good picture. Fortunately, we don’t see that often, particularly at a national level.

In your career in Arabian horses, not just as a judge, are there horses and performances that stand out in your memory? There have been so many over the years that I can’t really name them all. Some of the halter horses just took your breath away, and there were some really outstanding performance horses. I attended my first Arabian Nationals in 1970 or 1971, and I showed for the first time in 1973 at U.S. Nationals. Things have changed so very, very much since then. I can remember being in my late teens or early 20s, and walking by Khemosabi’s stall at night and he was right there, no drapes. He was a national champion in halter and performance—he was a legend—and I just stood by his stall and he stuck his little muzzle through the bars. (He had a beautiful head and a very fine muzzle.) He’d come right over and just look at you. It was a privilege to see him. We don’t really have that kind of opportunity now.

Pleasure class. It was the first work-off at a national show because we had just passed the rule allowing it—and it was phenomenal. It was an experience I’ll never forget, standing in center ring with the crowd going crazy and three exceptionally talented horses working off. The horses were Adams Fire with Joel Kiesner, SA Rapid Fire with Jim Stachowski, and Cool Night with Tish Kondas. Adams Fire won, Rapid Fire was reserve, and Cool Night was third. It was probably because it was a small ring and there were people all around on the rail, but there was so much energy and so much noise that it made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

They’re just good horses that pull those little walk/trot riders around and teach them something and give them a great experience. We see so many wonderful horses at all levels of competition. Some are great on a national level, some are great teachers, and some are kind horses that put in great performances. I hate to name specific horses because just like anything else, you name some and then you’ve left out some that were equally deserving and equally memorable.

Is there anything left in Arabians that you haven’t done, and still want to do? Of course. If time and money were not an issue, I’d love to try reining and/or cutting, because those are wonderful disciplines, but I just haven’t had the opportunity. And I wish that my circumstances were such that I could do more breeding, but I’m not in that position. I specifically have limited myself to a four-stall barn. I’ve raised a few foals over the years, but that’s not where I’m putting my energies now.

Clearly, you have devoted a lot of your life to the Arabian horse. Why?

Inevitable question: where are we as an industry right now? Do you think we have found a direction, or are we still searching?

Because I have a passion for the Arabian horse. They are beautiful, intelligent, loving creatures, and I enjoy being whinnied to every morning when I go out to the barn. (One of my horses is a very loud whinnier!) I also enjoy being with people who share that passion, because we can understand one another.

I think that we are recognizing that the Arabian horse industry, much like all of the equine industries, is in a challenging time because of changes in our economy, and changes in our youth and how they spend their recreational time. Because of that, I think that we are at a rebuilding, rejuvenating point in our industry. I think that

The number one is that in all the things we do as Arabian horse owners, enthusiasts and exhibitors, we need to concentrate on positive action that is united for the Arabian horse community. If we do that, the problems will resolve themselves. We won’t need to identify a top five. If we all put the best interest of the Arabian horse at the top of the list and all agree to work

If you could speak to all the halter exhibitors who will appear before you at U.S. Nationals, what advice would you give them?

I would say, “Show your horse to its best advantage within the parameters of the rules.” Most exhibitors know that, but we do see people who push the envelope. We want the best horse to win; I don’t want to have to penalize the best horse because it is showing intimidation, an unnatural tail, aggression, etc. (Under our halter rules, we have a number of penalty categories.) The mare died six weeks later, but the colt is fine. If you could choose any horse, dead or alive, to exhibit in amateur competition, who would you pick, and why? I would choose the Half-Arabian mare I am now showing, L. Millana (Millano x Bullish On Doc (AQHA)). I bought her as a 2-year-old from Mario Zerlotti. Josh Quintus has developed her, and she is one of the most wonderful horses I have ever ridden.

What is your most embarrassing horse show moment? Losing a rein at the canter in a western class at Region 7. The horse, Magance, just kept on cantering. Then he walked and quietly went into the center when they saw what had happened and called a timeout. He was a good boy! He is in his 20s now, and lives with me with two other of my retired show horses. What other hobbies/interests do you have outside of Arabian horses? I am an author, lecturer, and teacher.

What is your most embarrassing horse show moment? I have at least two most embarrassing moments. At my first Class A show, I swear I heard the announcer tell us to, “Reverse at the canter,” so I made a nice big circle, and then circled again when I noticed no one else was changing directions. I knew nothing about flying lead changes so did not know that you don’t ever, ever, reverse at the canter in a pleasure class. I was just going to do what the announcer told me to do! Over the last 5 years, I have learned a few things, but my second embarrassing moment came this past summer when I won Region 15 Reserve Champion in the Hunter Pleasure AAOTR 40+ class.

I so badly wanted a good victory pass photo to celebrate the moment that I made my victory pass before I even got my garland and ribbons! I was reminded over the loudspeaker system to go back and get the roses, and then told when it was time to make the “real” victory pass. What other hobbies/interests do you have outside of Arabian horses? Since owning and showing Andy, I have been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded with true friends and wonderful people. My life is so full; I really don’t need anything else.

What is your most embarrassing horse show moment? My most embarrassing horse show moment was at my first or second horse show with Joel. I remember walking up to the warm-up ring and complaining to my mom that my pants were feeling tight. When I got up on my horse, and Joel and my mom rolled my pants down, I found out why—my pants were on backwards. Halfway jumping off my horse to run to the bathroom and turn them around, Joel smiled at me and told me I was going in the class that way. I had plenty of time to change but, for his own humor, he wouldn’t let me. Fabulous having the points of the pants on the front of your boots when you show! If you could select the sire and dam of your next show horse, who would you choose and why? I don’t know much about pedigrees. I would have to consult someone with that expertise.

What is your most embarrassing horse show moment? I learned the hard way that in competition, you “complete the maneuver.” If you are at the walk and decide to circle for better position when the judge asks the horses to halt, it is in your best interest to complete the circle before halting your horse. If you do not, you will be the only one facing the opposite direction—this is not a good thing. Never will that happen on purpose again.

If you could choose any horse, dead or alive, to exhibit in amateur competition, who would you pick, and why? Balenciaga is a 4-year-old junior western horse owned by Sandy and John Zuccarini, and shown by Zach Powell. I think he is amazing. Not only is he talented and beautiful to look at, he is very sound-minded.

What other hobbies/interests do you have outside of Arabian horses? Photography, sailing, cooking, and travel.

I have two: SF Specs Shocwave and TMZ Kitty—I already have one of these combinations and would love to recreate this; and Apollopalooza and Sophisticated Lady. They are both amazing park horses, and I would love to show this great package. If you could choose any horse, dead or alive, to exhibit in amateur competition, who would you pick? Apollopalooza. I want to ride and exhibit a great park horse, and he was my favorite. He was an amazing individual.

What is the best advice your trainer has ever given you? I would have to say patience—waiting for everything to come together so that it is just right. If you could select the sire and dam of your next show horse, who would you choose and why? I would stay with my current program. I love the Dornaba tail-female line, and it crosses very well with Magnum Psyche. After all, it is true as they say, “Don’t fix it if it isn’t broke.”

How were you introduced to Arabian horses, and how many years have you been involved with Arabian horses? I was first introduced to the Arabian horse by a friend. He took me to my first horse show, which was the Buckeye in Ohio. Magnum Psyche was, I believe, a 2-year-old at that show. I fell instantly in love with the Arabian and set out to find a nice mare to breed to Magnum. I’ve been involved with Arabians for 18 years. Why do you own/exhibit Arabian horses? I’ve always been an animal lover and worshiped horses from afar as a child. I always thought that I’d own a horse some day. The first foal I ever bred was sired by Magnum and out of my Marsianin daughter. She had a beautiful filly, DD Crown Jewel. We took her to Scottsdale as a yearling, and she took second in her class of 54 fillies. I was instantly hooked on the adrenalin rush and competition of showing horses. She went on to be a National Champion Mare and Scottsdale Grand Champion Mare. Now I’m showing her full sibling,

Her blood runs through the veins of all of my horses and I love them all. Showing her would be the biggest honor that could ever be bestowed upon me. She was a great mare that was true to her breeding. What is your most embarrassing horse show moment? My most embarrassing show moment was at a class A show. There were only three horses in my class and my horse was a total donkey on that day! We came in last place when we should have been in the blue. What other hobbies/interests do you have outside of Arabian horses? It’s hard to find time to have other interests in addition to horses. But, when I get the chance, I love to fish! Living On Tulsa Time by Jeff Tracy

Barn parties are an integral part of horse show life—or at least they were when I was competing, in the previous century. Friday and Saturday nights our shows were usually filled with music, food and fun. Yes, there were beverages that sometimes made Saturday and Sunday mornings a bit rough, but it was all worth it. I was the unlucky recipient of bad ice on more than one occasion, but still managed never to miss a class. October is the month when the U. S. Nationals, in Tulsa, Okla., takes the stage for Arabian horses. The yearly coronation of our national champions is a fun and sometimes lengthy event. If you are there, competing or not, you’ll be living on Tulsa time—although not exactly like the Eric Clapton/Don Williams song. If you’re an exhibitor, days are sometimes long, starting early for a practice session with your charge(s) and trainer (if applicable), all the while bravely trying to keep your nerves and emotions in check. An educated guess would be that you may not have thought about a really good meal in the last two or three days. I mean, a relaxing, quiet setting with great food and perhaps a glass or two of fine Cabernet, seasoned with great conversation. A social setting designed to calm the nerves, level the brainwaves, and add a touch of reality to the mindset. Unfortunately, you probably do not have the time for the aforementioned dream sequence so might I suggest a good old-fashioned barn party BBQ? Not the kind where 500 to 1,000 of your closest friends are trolling for free food and drinks, as we all have seen many times in the past. Think in terms of something different: a party, without fanfare or swagger. A barn party that is semi-private, considerate of neighboring barns, and does not break the bank is the ticket. This time, consider inviting no more than 10 people, yourself included. Keep it small, if possible, so you can enjoy the 148 | A r A bi A n Hor se T i mes

festivities and benefit from some downtime. (This would include turning off your cell phone and not reading the judges’ cards from the preliminary rounds. The latter will only make you crazy, I guarantee it.) Keep your menu simple; you don’t have a full kitchen to work with. Steaks are always a favorite. They are easy to grill without too much mess and very little fuss. I recommend T-bones or rib eyes. It is hard to go wrong with these basic bovine selections. It is fall, so there is fresh corn on the cob, which is also easy to grill. The last suggestion would be a grilled tomato topped with feta and bacon. I served this to the judges in Scottsdale a couple of years ago, and they ate all of them with no complaints. I take that as a compliment, because trust me, they are a tough audience.

Throw in some potato salad, green salad or coleslaw, along with a few condiments, and get ready for a feast. You will not need ketchup unless you invite Gene LaCroix to the party (I’ll explain that in another story). If you don’t have a BBQ, check with the motor home commandos. One of them surely will have a grill you can

borrow for a couple of hours. Just make sure the gas tank is full when you return it. Beverages will be required, of course. Select what suits your palate. Just remember, you do have to perform in the Ford, Mustang or Dome Arena at some point. And watch out for that bad ice I spoke to you about earlier!

Grilled T-Bone Steaks

4 T-bone steaks about 1 inch thick (12oz.) Salt and pepper Worcestershire sauce (Lea & Perrins®) Steak Rub (optional) Butter Olive oil Rule of thumb: for medium rare steaks, figure on grilling four to six minutes on each side. If you want yours rare or well-done, adjust the cooking times in this recipe to suit. Preheat grill to high. Place steaks on a platter and let them warm to room temperature. Season steaks evenly on both sides with salt and pepper or your favorite rub. Brush grill grate with olive oil prior to placing steaks on grill.

Place steak on grill. After two minutes, brush about one teaspoon of Worcestershire on each steak. Finish grilling bottom side, about four more minutes. Flip the steak and repeat the process. One minute before the steak is finished, spread a small amount of butter on the steak. When the butter is melted, flip the steak and let it stay on the grill for about 30 to 45 seconds more. This will cause the steak to sizzle. Caution—your grill will probably flame up a bit at this point. Remove the steaks and let them rest for one to two minutes before serving. This recipe will work for rib eyes or other cuts.

You might ask if they sell choice grade or better. Don’t go for select or utility grades when buying meat; you will only be disappointed. If your grill has two racks (upper and lower), use the upper rack when preparing this recipe. If you have a shallow plan, make sure it fits on the upper rack of your grill and place the prepared tomato in the pan. If there is no pan, use aluminum foil. Fold a large piece of foil in half several times until it is thick enough to hold the tomato steady on the grill.

Preheat your grill to a medium high. Cut tomato in half, and salt and pepper to taste. Spread one-half teaspoon of horseradish on the tomato. Cover each tomato half with one layer of bacon. Cover the bacon with sliced feta. Grill for four to six minutes or so, until golden brown. Sprinkle with chives and serve. *If you have all-beef bacon available, use that instead of regular pork bacon. It works great. You can precook the bacon on the grill. Use the upper rack and lay the strips out across the rack like you would in a regular pan. Caution—there will be a lot of drippings so watch for flare ups.

Scottsdale may reign supreme in February, but in the month of August the Arabian scene heads north to Canada, where the 55th annual Canadian National Championship Show was celebrated once again August 15-18, 2012. Volume 43, No. 5 | 161

This year’s National Champion Stallion honors went to perennial favorite LD Pistal, a Magnum Psyche son owned by Carlos and Christiane Roizner. This win marks the sixth national championship claimed by the smoking hot chestnut stallion, who was Canadian Junior Champion Stallion in 2004. National Reserve Champion Stallion was awarded to the bay Gazal Al Shaqab son Brixx IA, who managed to throw an unfortunate shoe on

Part of the allure of halter classes is seeing up-andcoming stars of the breed, and this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Canadian Nationals did not disappoint. Much of the halter buzz was focused around Luxemere Jizette, a Versace granddaughter (through KM Bugatti) who took the championship in the Futurity Fillies class with the highest halter score of the show, a combined total of 359. Owned by Anthony Marino and Anthony Marino Jr.,

of Birmingham, Ala., and shown to the win by David Boggs, the stunning grey filly gave a guest interview to news cameras outside the ring after her class. Champion in the Futurity Colts went to Sir Marwan CRF for Cedar Ridge Farms, led once again by Andy Sellman. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Canadian Nationals boasted four new halter classes in the form of Yearling Championships for purebred and Half-Arabian Fillies and Colts/Geldings. Brought to fruition through the hard work of Murray Popplewell and the vision of sponsors Canadian Crane and Rae-Dawn Arabians, the Yearling Championships offer prize money to the tune of a $5,000 payout in each of the purebred classes and a $2,500 pot for partbreds.

Though the Half-Arabian classes had a starting slate of only four yearlings each, the purebred classes were well attended, with 10 fillies and 11 colts gracing the ring. This could be an excellent chance for next year’s local crop of Half-Arabians to step up to the plate for a shot at the prize money. Top purebred honors in the inaugural Yearling Championships went to Sultan ORA for the colts/ geldings (led by Andrew Sellman for owners Anthony Marino and Anthony Marino Jr.) and to Star Of Justice ORA for the fillies (led by Alcides Rodrigues for Oak Ridge Arabians of Freeport, Ill.). Both winning youngsters were bred by Oak Ridge Arabians. Championship roses in the yearling Half-Arabian classes went to WC Dream On for the colts/geldings (shown by 164 | A R A BI A n HOR SE T I MES

Austin Miller for owner/breeder Holly Woods Dillin of Fort Worth, Texas), and to Beni TG for the fillies (shown by Rinaldo Longuini for owners/breeders Todd and Glena Weegens of Freeport, Ill.). Two other notable halter wins for the boys will be staying in Canada—imported Polish stallion Empres took home Champion Sport Horse Stallion for owner Prue Critchley of Hamiota, Manitoba, and Morning Sun Arabians’ Spitfyre VF claimed the purebred Stallions AAOTH class with owner Mike Steenhart on the lead. As in halter, the western divisions saw a number of competitors hit a good run of luck (brought about, as always, by a ton of preparation and hard work!). Joe Reser of Setting Sun Stables took home the championship in Western Pleasure on his Desperado V son Klint Black,

and won the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure title on Jo Money for owners Annge and Dave Daugherty. Reser capped off his week with a unanimous championship in the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse class aboard Ima Rockin Pop Star, owned by Rick and Karen Bliha. Double reining championships were once again claimed by VLQ Friendly Fire, with trainer LaRae Fletcher Powell, in the purebred open class and with amateur owner Alison Mostowich of Calgary, Alberta, in the AAOTR 18-39. These wins add up to an astounding 12 national championships in open and amateur reining for the red chestnut gelding affectionately known as “Fireman.” Mostowich and Fletcher Powell took home reserve in both classes as well, aboard Phoenix CA, owned by Katie Mostowich. Not to be denied in

Half-Arabian Reining, Fletcher Powell rode to the championship aboard BSF Starbuck for owner Michelle Pease-Paulsen of Tacoma, Wash., and Mostowich took reserve in the AOTR aboard CA Just Plain Fancy. In the English divisions, Baske Is A Genius started the show with a bang, claiming a unanimous win in the HalfArabian Driving AOTD with owner Paul Heiman for the second year in a row. And spectators had the chance to watch a legend in action as Americanbeautie, piloted by Gordon Potts, took first place roses in Half-Arabian Country Pleasure open. The mare also went reserve in Half-Arabian Country Pleasure Select with Leslie Doran Sommer riding for Shamrock Farms LLC. Thanks to a rule change, this year’s Select classes were some of the largest classes of the show.

Part of the charm of Canadian Nationals is the mix of open, amateur and youth classes on offer, and this year’s Youth division showed a truly admirable mix of competition, fun, and camaraderie.

Faith Seward and her homebred gelding RB Curtain Call had a show to remember, taking a total of three championships back home to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta—Half-Arabian Country JTR and JOTR 17 & Under, and Saddle Seat Equitation JTR 14-17. In the

purebred classes, FSF Loaded Gun and Drue Landay won the Country Pleasure JOTR, picked up a reserve in Country JTR, and added another championship in English Show Hack JTR. Isobelle Ehret also had three championships in the Youth division, but achieved her wins on three different horses—her own Kindred Spirits in Country English Pleasure JTR, brother Carson’s Isabella HA in English Show Hack JTR, and Chelsie Shamuhn’s Scotty So Hotty in Half-Arabian English Pleasure JTR. Isobelle added to her total with a reserve championship aboard Shes Got Allotta (owned by Pat Portas) in the HalfArabian Hunter Pleasure JTR 14-17.

Olivia Boggs and Shariah Star of Osseo, Minn., were champions in Western Horsemanship JTR 14-17 and Western Pleasure JOTR 17 & Under, settling for reserve in the Western Pleasure JTR class. Eccentric Valentino

Eccentric Valentino (DA Valentino x Ameila B)

“Eccentric Valentino gives me, in a way, a great responsibility,” says owner Luciana Fasano, of Fazenda Floresta, in São Paulo, Brazil. “That is, to breed good foals. He is a great son of DA Valentino, from a daughter of Magnum Psyche. I see that as a very nice responsibility.” That pedigree is a lot to live up to. DA Valentino, who died prematurely in 2011 at the age of 8, was a six-time national champion, and Eccentric Valentino’s dam, Amelia B, has a national championship and three national reserve championships on her record. “This is a very important thing,” Fasano says, referring to the strong female presence in Eccentric Valentino’s bloodlines. “He has an amazing mother by Magnum. I have seen in Argentina, with my own eyes, what Magnum has done and is still doing with his mares—the sons and daughters he is siring.” 170 | A R A BI A N HOR SE T I MES

That Eccentric Valentino lives up to his potential already has been proven. As a yearling, he was a U.S. National Top Ten; following that with the title of Canadian National Reserve Champion 2-Year-Old Colt and Canadian National Champion Futurity Colt. In 2011, he was named U.S. National Champion Stallion 4-5 Years Old and U.S. National Reserve Champion Senior Stallion. This year, he added the award of Scottsdale Champion Classic Arabian 5-Year-Old Stallion. As a breeding stallion, Eccentric Valentino has had limited exposure to date. He was bred sparingly during the years that his show career was the focus, a situation that is changing as Fasano looks to the contribution he will make to the breed. “Now I have to go to the next step,” she says, “which is to translate what my stallions have shown in the ring, and that is to breed good foals. My responsibility is quality control—not to make sure

Fasano is careful to credit former trainer Rodolfo Guzzo for his contribution to the stallion’s career thus far—and his role in her own love for the breed. “When I bought Eccentric, I was with Guzzo,” she notes, “and I never forget these things. What made me become the person that I am in Arabian horses was [my other stallion] AAS-Elishahh and Rodolfo Guzzo. I am very grateful.” Another on her list to thank is David Boggs. She first saw Eccentric at Midwest, and Boggs, who led the colt to many of his titles, played an inf luential role in Eccentric’s career, as well as Fasano’s increasing presence as an Arabian owner. Now, a new chapter is opening. “I’m very happy to be with Rinaldo,” she says. “He’s a wonderful person, and the team that works at Longuini Training Center is really perfect. They are very efficient, and I’m very happy.”

that I’m selling breedings like crazy, but to make sure that I’m selling breedings to the right mares.” She has seen what Eccentric Valentino has sired, and is firm in her belief that he has a great deal to offer the Arabian industry, both in North and South America and in Europe as well. That one stallion might meet the requirements of breeders in both Europe and the Americas might sound unusual, she admits, but it is her opinion. And a few stallions already do that—just not enough of them. “A good combination for the Arabian horse is combining what the Americans have done with what Europe and the Middle East has done,” Fasano observes. “We don’t have to look at each other anymore and say, ‘this is a European horse’ or ‘this is an American horse.’ We need to say, ‘this is a good Arabian horse.’” For the moment, the first order of business is Eccentric Valentino’s upcoming appearance at the Brazilian Nationals, where he will show for the first time

She is also happy to have Eccentric Valentino home. “I really want my horses next to me, to feel their energy, to see their different character,” she says. “I want to be with them. Now Eccentric is here in Brazil, so Brazilian breeders can see him. He has work to do here, and then we will see what the market is asking him to do. I will do what the Arabian horse is asking for.” Again, she reflects on the responsibility of owning an Arabian with the potential to influence the breed for the better. Despite that she loves having her horses close to her, Fasano does not retreat from her overall commitment to the breed. “Maybe down the road he can go to Europe; that sounds a little crazy, but you never know,” she muses. “I want him to do what is best for the breed. He will retire home, always. But he can visit the best breeders, wherever they are. The only request I have is that they would take care of him with love, as I would at home. “What drives me is to see not what is good for me or good for you,” she emphasizes, “but what is good for the Arabian horse. Eccentric Valentino is a part of that plan. He has brought me a great joy and now we are ready to show Brazil who he is.” n Volume 43, No. 5 | 171

With a Vegas-inspired theme, Iowa once again rolled out the red carpet to a world-wide audience of Arabian horse enthusiasts as it hosted the 2012 Iowa Gold Star Futurity and Fall Classic Horse show during Labor Day weekend. With approximately 300 horses and thousands of exhibitors and spectators, the five-day horse show featured not only great competition, but a stallion service auction, progressive barn party, sponsored meals, and a variety of entertainment. With its track record for fun and its competitive Vegas theme, the show kicked off on Thursday with not only two sessions of great classes, but a progressive barn party and arguably the most popular entertainment at the show—dog races! Featuring three highlycompetitive heats, the grand championship was won by a lightning-fast Jack Russell hailing from Texas. New this year, the stallion auction started online to enable anyone around the world to participate. All purebred lots reaching $1,500 and all Half-Arabian lots reaching $750 online then qualified for the live auction in Des Moines at the Marriott Downtown. All other lots remained open for an additional week to allow for extra promotion and bidding opportunities. This format turned out to be quite a success with new bidders participating from all over the

country, and even new winning bidders from Europe. In addition to selling a total of 102 top-tier stallion breedings in the purebred and Half-Arabian auctions, the auction party featured a rousing “Pianopalooza” show featuring Iowa’s own talented Tony Bohenkamp and Megan Hill. As an added incentive to breeders, winning bidders on auction night also were entered into a door prize drawing for a chance to enter the “Vegas Vault” for an opportunity to grab some cash. Three lucky bidders went home with not only a world-class stallion breeding, but also a little cash in their pocket! Speaking of money, prize money was abundant at the show with approximately $200,000 up for grabs in the Gold Star Futurity halter and performance classes. The 2012 Champion Auction Purebred Yearling Filly and Colt took home a whopping $19,040 each, and the reserve filly and colt each took home $9,520 respectively. For Iowa breeders Brad and Shelley Button, the dream of breeding a Gold Star Futurity Champion came to reality this year when their filly Thee Vitoria (Vitorio TO x Thee Diana) won the Gold Star Fillies Yearling Open class with Austin Boggs at the lead. “I will never forget Doug Shane announcing, ‘Your 2012 Iowa Gold Star Open Yearling Filly Champion…. #509

Thee Vitoria and Austin Boggs!’” Shelley said. “I had always dreamt of those roses. What a dream come true!” Due to the overwhelming success of the 3- and 4-year-old futurity English Pleasure Jackpot classes in 2011, similar jackpot classes were added for 3-year-old western horses and were sponsored graciously by Tamar Arabians and Show Ready. These classes were a great opportunity to get futurity horses in the ring before nationals and each had $500 in added prize money! The Gold Star was excited to welcome numerous new stallions to the stallion lineup, including Aafanazi SF, Audacious PS, Al Hadiyah AA, Bey Ali WF, De Beers,

Any get already on the ground by new Gold Star stallions were also eligible to be originally nominated into the program and show. Ken Knipe, owner of the multi-National Champion English Pleasure stallion Vegaz was able to take advantage of this initiative by also nominating the Vegaz daughter Fistful of Diamondz (Vegaz x MD Pro’s Aequus) into the futurity, who then went on to win the Gold Star English Pleasure Open class with trainer Chris Wilson in the irons. “We enjoyed our first trip to the Iowa Gold Star!” said Ken Knipe. “Great facility, excellently managed show, great horses, and more fun than one should have at a horse show! I enjoyed both the halter and performance horses, and got to witness some great horses and great presentations. I look forward to coming to the show again in the future!”

Another annual tradition at the Gold Star Show is to honor both a Breeder of Significance and a Sire of Significance from the Arabian industry that has impacted not only the breed as a whole, but the Iowa Gold Star Futurity. This year’s Breeder of Significance was awarded to Jerland Farms. Originally inspired by “The Black Stallion” and nurtured by such formidable names as the Gaineys, the Burtons, and the Blasers, Larry Jerome has been breeding Arabian and Half-Arabian horses for the better part of 40 years. The success of this program is becoming ever more clear with the Jerland-bred horses garnering titles in Scottsdale, Las Vegas, numerous Regionals, Nationals and International show arenas around the world. In addition, Jerland Farms’ stallions MPA Giovanni, *Khadraj NA, and Bellagio J have made their presence known at the Iowa Gold Star Futurity with winning get too numerous to count in both the halter and performance arenas. Jerland is owned by Larry and Shelley Jerome and managed by their daughter and son-in-law, Indira and Mike Van Handel.

The 2012 Sire of Significance was awarded to DS Major Afire (Afire Bey V x S S Magnolia). Owned by Jennifer Patterson of Glenbrook, Nev., DS Major Afire stands at Mike Neal Arabian Center LLC in Delavan, Wis. Through his sire, DS Major Afire carries the championproducing bloodlines of the world-famous Varian breeding program. DS Major Afire’s dam is the National Champion-producing mare S S Magnolia who combines the strength, substance and athleticism of the Spanish lines through her sire, AN Magno, with the beauty and refinement of the Egyptian lines through her dam, SS Soufianna. S S Magnolia contributed the best of these qualities to her son. The Gold Star Futurity has been fortunate to have DS Major Afire in its stallion lineup for many years, and has seen the impact he has made on the show ring. His progeny have won championships in halter and performance in both the purebred and Half-Arabian divisions. He was well represented this year by the purebred hunter Concerto In E Major who accepted the roses in honor of his sire.

auá Grande Hotel in Araxá, in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais, hosted in the last August 17 and 18, for the fourth time, the Ouro de Minas do Cavalo Árabe. The elegant and traditional hotel, with its sought-for thermal wells of sulfurous and radioactive waters, hosts one of the biggest touristic appealing shows in Brazil, not only for the hotel’s attractions, but especially for the great party with dinner and presentation of horses, offered to visitors by Leandro Aguiar’s Haras Cruzeiro. This year, the show was judged by German Frank Spönle, American Greg Knowles and Australian Mark Wharton. The judgment followed a system of scores, a method adopted by few shows in Brazil.

The son of Marwan Al Shaqab, RHR Marcedes, Champion Futurity Colt of the Canadian National and recently imported by Salim Mattar’s Haras Sahara, was the Champion Stallion of the show. The mother of the Champion, Ellegant Dream, is a daugther of Magic Dream by Ali Jamaal. The Reserve Championship went for Vaillant Rach of Saliba family’s Rach Stud. Vaillant is a son of Mister Eros HX by Pavel Rach (Armagnac) and his mother Violla Rach is a daughter of the National Brazilian Champion *Eksport, imported from Poland. RHR Marcedes and Vaillant Rach reached the same score, 329, but in the Championship Knowles and Wharton voted for Marcedes, and Spönle for Vaillant.

The Mare Championship was decided unanimously. Honey’s Delight RB, in addition to being chosen the Champion by the three judges, had the biggest score in all exhibition (335,5), with 3 scores of 20, one in type (Greg) and two in neck (Greg and Spönle). Honey’s Delight is a daughter of JJ Senor Magnum by Magnum Psyche out of Honeymoon FHP by NV Sure Fire (Aladdinn). She is owned by Eduardo Gama’s Arabians of Santa Ventura. The Reserve also brings Magnum Psyche in the pedigree. Summer Songs, imported from the USA by Salim Mattar’s Haras Sahara, is a daughter of Magnum Psyche out of Solina by Solstice (Salon). Another unanimity was the Champion Colt Cortez LM of Lucio Miranda and his son Tersio’s Haras Paiquere. Cortez is a son of HK Keav Power (Power World), a young sire which is a revelation in Brazilian breeding, with three sons that were National Champions last year. Cortez’s mother, Nyeta LM is a daughter of Shah Jin by Bey Shah. His Reserve was Versace D’Yllan JM, by Yllan El Jamal of Jose and Maisa Alves’ Haras JM. Versace’s mother is the refined Myska JM by Don El Chall. For the first time in track, Haras Cruzeiro presented, to win the Filly Championship, VA Exotika by Alija, one of the beautiful mares that Leandro Aguiar imported from Europe.

n the night of Saturday, Leandro Aguiar and André Cruz opened the doors of theirs farm for Haras Cruzeiro’s 3rd Open House, an already traditional event in Brazilian circuit.

It was a confraternization moment for the Arabian family, where the 3 judges, Germany’s Frank Spönle, USA’s Greg Knowles, and Australia’s Mark Wharton, were homage by ABCCA (the Brazilian Association of Breeders of Arabian Horses) for their participation in the show. Also, Mrs. Maisa Alves, the wife of Mr. Jose Alves (ABCCA’s president) was homage by Haras Cruzeiro.

The celebration was also an excellent opportunity to appreciate some of the best horses of Haras Cruzeiro’s breeding stock and for good business – sons of Ansata Shaamis and HDB Sihr Ibn Massai, egg-cells from important broodmares of Haras Cruzeiro, such as National Reserve Champions Shariba and Mary Rose, were sold, in addition to the sale of some animals. The main buyers were Haras JM (Jose and Maisa Alves), Mahmud Amer (Jordan), Haras FT (Flavia Torres) Dulce Rosas, Haras Paiquere (Tercio Miranda), Haras Caranda (Paquito Carrasco), Haras Estrela Dalva (Jacyr and Jamys de Freitas) and Haras Stigmatas (Carlos Menezes). ❑

by Sylvia Dirkse Leo Arabians and Arabian Stud Europe is the farm of Simone Leo & Talitha Bakker. Both of them involved with Arabian Horses from an early age, they each founded their own breeding programme. By coincidence or fate as you may call it, they both built their bloodlines on the Brazilian-type Arabian. When Simone Leo and Talitha Bakker got together in early 2011, it was almost natural to join the two breeding programs together and collaborate in breeding even higher quality young stock. The farm of Simone Leo & Talitha Bakker is located on the Dutch/German border, surrounded by forest and nature. The 3ha of green pastures, AI centre and 12 light and airy stables provide a home to the world’s most interesting collection of Arabian horses. Chief sire of the stud is the black stallion Jazzmeen. Fully Brazilian/American bred through his sire world champion Essteem (Fame VF) and his dam Jasmyne (Nyhl el Jamaal). In total, Jazzmeen carries two crosses to Ali Jamaal, two crosses to Bey Shah and two crosses to El Shaklan. It shows in his reproduction. All of his foals have a wide forehead, big dark eyes, a tiny muzzle, a long neck and they all can move like trotting machines. His offspring can be found everywhere in the world. In Brazil, his 3rd generation is born and heading to the Brazilian Nationals this October! Jazzmeen himself is Talitha Bakker’s best friend. Together they participate in Eventing. A sport that requires skills in dressage, show jumping and cross country. Jazzmeen and Talitha find great joy in especially the cross country and like to train outside in the forest or to go for a swim in the lake. During his free time, Jazzmeen shares his field with the mares and foals. He loves the natural life and takes good care of his herd. Another stallion resident at the farm is the three years old ASE Marajó. Homebred and a son of world champion Marajj out of the farm’s champion mare Manilah (Salaa el Dine). Marajó had a great show carreer this season, is a first premium breeding stallion and is now starting his career under saddle. The plan is to compete in endurance next season. Another proof that beauty and performance can go very well together!

The young stallion Don Luciano SL, also homebred and a son of Psyrasic (Psytadel) and out of the foundation mare Mata Hari HY (Lumiar Amadeus) is waiting anxiously to take his place in the breeding barn as well. Born in 2011, this colt had a tremendous show season this year, with two champion titles. He will continue at the triple crown shows in the next months and will then start to breed some carefully selected mares. The mare division of the farm is mainly Brazilian and Egyptian bred. The oldest mare is Gucci bred Estana (Moashiro x Estefania by Ibn Estopa). She is the riding horse of the farm which she enjoys at her fullest. The farm has three foundation mares, that all produced a family line for the farm.

The longest line is Amal-Chariklia. Her mother Atlantis (Amal) was a broodmare at the farm before her. AmalChariklia is a daughter of Insjallahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fayoum (Abakan) and she is currently in foal to GR Marvel (Marwan al Shaqab). Also still resident at the farm is her daughter ASE Brasilia Chariklia. A daughter of the Brazilian sensation Borsalino K, Brasilia was recently been sold to Il Paradiso Stud, Italy. Brasilia has had a good show career of her own and this year produced a stunning filly by Bronze world champion RFI Farid (RFI Maktub), named ASE Bahia Chariklia, who will be retained as a future broodmare as well.

Another important mare for the farm is Manilah. A daughter of Radames II (Salaa el Dine) and out of the famous broodmare Marischka (Plakat) who goes back to Ibn Galal. Besides performing in showjumping and cross country, Manilah was also many times champion in showing and produced four foals. The first one, ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil, is by Bishr (Hlayyil Ramadan) and was Reserve champion at show as a youngster. This year she produced her first foal. An incredible colt by bronze world champion RFI Farid (RFI Maktub). His name is ASE Faraaj and he already won his first champion title, scoring the highest points in movement of the entire show! A big promise for the future! The second foal of Manilah was ASE Maraj贸 by Marajj, who is also still resident at the farm as young breeding stallion. The 3rd foal by Manilah, a filly by Ajman Moniscione named ASE Ajmilah, unfortunately died at birth. Manilah made more than up for it, when she produced her latest foal. An incredible typey filly by Al Ayal AA named ASE Aryelle. With her extremely dished face, she is a typical daughter of Manilah and will also be retained for the future breeding program of the farm.

The mare Mata Hari HY is another great broodmare at the farm. She was imported by Simone Leo from Brazil a few years ago and is producing one champion after the other. Her son Don Luciano SL was twice unanimous gold medal winner this year and is only at the beginning of his career. At the moment, Mata Hari has a colt foal by Hassan Ashiraf at foot, named Don Angelo SL. He already proved to be a real stunner as he also received his first Gold medal in showing. Today, Mata Hari is in foal to World reserve Champion Fadi al Shaqab (Besson Carol) for a 2013 foal. Other mares at the farm are Soraya el Bri (CH el Brillo x Scala el Jamaal), an Austrian National Champion mare & for 2013 in foal to Nader al Shaqab, Lumiar bet Sabe (Lumiar Balzac x Celine Carol), a grey mare still standing in Brazil and currentlyin foal to Mister Style JM (Style SRA) and the recently purchased Geraldyne el Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Gai Natasha) who is now bred to * El Tino (DA Valentino)

Another mare who was very influential at the stud was the famous *Dakaree (Dakar el Jamaal x Ultimate Fancy). Imported by Talitha Bakker from America years ago, this mare as done a lot for the farm. Earning champion titles in Western pleasure, being named numerously Champion mare at shows and producing stunning offspring. Her son ASE Myandour by Marhaabah (Marwan al Shaqab) has recently been leased to Greece, where he is performing in endurance. Her exquisite look-a-like daughter ASE Jazzaree by Jazzmeen (Essteem), is growing up to be an unbelievable pretty mare and is being retained for the future. This year, Dakaree produced again a beautiful filly named ASE Dafarida SL by RFI Farid (RFI Maktub). For 2013, an embryo was successfully transferred from Dakaree and Fadi al Shaqab. The expectations are high! Dakaree is now sold to Al Shaqab Stud in Qatar, where she will continue her breeding career. We are proud and pleased for Dakaree to have been given such a great opportunity!

There are also some upcoming youngsters almost ready to take their places in the breeding barn. One of them is Stig Ashirafa (Amir Ashiraf x Evelyne Bay). Bred by Haras Stigmatas from Brazil, this stunning lady with her exotic looks and extreme movement is the next pearl in the breeding barn! At two years old, she is still enjoying her happy life with her friend ASE Rahyeelah el Jary. A homebred bay filly, sired by Jary el Jamaal (Ali Jamaal) and out of Roxana el Bri (CH el Brillo).

Don Angelo SL Another youngster is Gioia by Royal SL, sired by world champion Royal Colours and out of the former champion broodmare of the stud; Magdalena Galaa (WH Justice). Gioia is exotic, big moving with a great attitude. She will be a very interesting show prospect next year! She shares the field with a beautiful black filly named ASE Parissia by Jazz. A daughter of Jazzmeen out of Parnassia by Classic Shadwan, Parissia is the real package. Taking after her mother with her dished face and looking much like daddy with the wide forehead and the big movement, making her an interesting filly to retain for the breeding programme. In his day job, Simone Leo is the publisher of the world famous magazines Tutto Arabi and Desert Heritage. Talitha is working as head of the PR and marketing department at an international architecture and engineering company. They manage the farm together with Angela Fortuin and international endurance rider Marijke Visser, with the occasional help of Shelly and Amanda Compaan, who both share their love for Arabian horses, giving them all the love they so well deserve!
