It’s That Time Again It’s time for breeders to address the future. If we’re going to have new superstars, someone has to roll the dice (hopefully after doing the relevant research) and create a pedigree. This has been the case for me and my family for 40 years. We start the process of considering what horses/pedigrees we have and, in our own minds, listing suggestions for good crosses. Then we try to bring two to three other people into the mix to help us see and evaluate what we have. The bottom line is, we rarely make decisions alone. We meet and talk … and meet and talk … because we don’t want to make decisions that won’t produce good, solid, beautiful and useful horses. There is something else we think about too, and we hope everyone does. It is absolutely critical that we all try to breed the best we can—make the best choices we can for the sake of the horse. But that involves making the best choices for ourselves too. It’s not just about our theories as to what will lead to the next great champion. It’s also about what impact a new foal will have on our own lives. Are we willing to take care of it at home or pay board for it and its dam to live somewhere else? If it doesn’t turn out as well as we’d hoped, will we go the extra mile to find it another career or a good home with someone who cares? The anticipation of a new baby is fun, and when it turns out well it can be exciting and possibly even lucrative—but that doesn’t always happen. Being a breeder is about more than just being smart. It is about being responsible too. We have a wonderful breed as a whole, and it is important that we stand by the individual horses in that breed. When we’re ready to do that, we are truly ready to breed horses, to begin each year’s long, 11-month wait for the foal that can become the next household name. Breeding is so important, because without breeders we would not have this great Arabian horse. Let’s be responsible breeders.

Thriving In A Globalized Industry by JEFF WALLACE and THERESA CARDAMONE
We sat down with Midwest Training and Breeding Stations founder David Boggs to find out what has kept Midwest on the cutting edge of the Arabian Market for decades.

For over 30 years, Midwest Training and Breeding Stations have set the pace for marketing the world’s finest Arabian horses. According to Midwest founder David Boggs, the formula is simple. “Surround yourself with the very best horses, prepare and condition them in the very best way, and give people a reason to come visit Midwest,” he professes. There are two crucial and constant elements to his continued success. First, high quality horses are the basic ingredients that never change. Second, the celebrated atmosphere of family, fellowship, and fun that truly identifies Team Midwest is carefully cultivated in ways that can nurture some clients for decades while still drawing in fresh new faces. Boggs explains, “We’ve always had presentations of our horses and open houses where people feel welcome. They bring true passion for the horses and are excited and proud to be part of the breed and to be sharing the experience. That puts the pressure on us to fulfill their expectations when they see their first Midwest horse …, we deliver the quality that we promise.” And deliver they do. Horses at Midwest are hand picked, one by one, from every corner of the globe. “We negotiate, sometimes very strongly and diligently, just to acquire them, to gather them together here
in Scottsdale as a collection,” David continues. “It’s a constant search to always have the best of the best of each age group and each gender. It is an ongoing work in progress each day, one that’s very exciting, very thrilling. The global hunt never stops. But that’s fine by me. Besides being my livelihood and my business, my passion and my hobby is Arabian horses. Other than my children, whom the Lord has blessed me with, the Arabian horse is the very heartbeat of who I am.” David feels blessed to have attracted and marketed many millions of dollars’ worth of horses over the years. He syndicated Padron for $11 million in less than 90 days, and had another great year when he sold DA Valentino, Da Vinci FM, two $1,000,000 yearling colts and other great stallions, and some very famous, world class mares. “Quite frankly,” Boggs said, “My dream has always been for Midwest to be known as a Tiffany’s and not a K-Mart. My family owns horses for riding and my children have their ponies and geldings we have fun with. But normally, one doesn’t come to Midwest in search of a riding horse. With limited space, our mission is being the caretakers of the really high end halter and breeding horses.”

The recent Midwest event on the annual Scottsdale Farm Tour is the perfect example of their successful style of marketing. The 650 visitors were all treated as special guests, enjoyed lunch, and were shown 40 of the most spectacular horses on earth in just under two hours. More than 50 business cards left by enthusiastic potential clients will be used to diligently follow up to provide further information and set up appointments to meet the horses up close and personal. Discerning each person’s unique needs is crucial as some may be breeders collecting certain pedigrees, while some want to buy a show horse just for fun. At Midwest, managing the follow-up means individual personal contact from Boggs or his assistant Nate White whenever there is an inquiry. Most of the prospective and existing clients are totally un-like-minded people from all different businesses, ages, and facets of life. The only passion that they share, their common bond, is their love of Arabian horses and how much they enjoy them. “Most people have ‘real jobs’ and purchase horses with disposable income,” David explained. “When they are around the horses, they love to enjoy the atmosphere, the fun, and the fellowship of Midwest. I would say for 80% of our clients, that’s why they’re in it, for that fellowship and fun and the lifestyle it offers them, and for 20% it’s the showing. Horse shows are nerve-wracking, there’s a lot of stress, and it’s a very competitive environment. It’s really nice to get back to the farm, put your blue jeans on, and just hang out together and enjoy the horses with friends.” The thrill of competition gives way to a convivial atmosphere of satisfaction. “We like to do things with the families, BBQs, afternoon socials, and bonfires in the evening. We present horses under the lights. These things are just for fun and people enjoy them together. We go through 100 pounds of carrots every week, because for most Midwest owners, it’s a hands-on thing. Continuing the education, discussing pedigrees, discussing the future plans for their horse, and enjoying it all over a coffee or a cocktail makes it something fun. It’s a relaxing atmosphere.” Midwest manages to maintain the strong in-person camaraderie that people are drawn to while embracing change by increasing access to their sales list to qualified buyers in the global market. Boggs considers

technology to be a great blessing to the marketing of the Arabian horse. Today, a high percentage of the horses that Midwest sells are marketed online, to foreign buyers in particular. They can look at a horse’s videos, vet reports, radiographs, and other documents upon request, online. Increased access seems to be helping the industry as a whole and continues to shape the breed. “The European/Middle East market is becoming bigger and bigger each year and the style of horse we love in the United States is closer now to the style of horse they love in Europe,” he related. “It’s really become a global enterprise where we’re sharing horses from different countries. Take for example, a horse like *Kahil Al Shaqab, who was a World Champion Stallion in Paris, stood for breeding in Europe, and has just arrived at Midwest. He is now in the U.S. market and is very popular. Or the noted *Hariry Al Shaqab who won every major title there was to win at the United States Nationals, Scottsdale, and Las Vegas World Cup before he went back to Europe and was recently named the World Champion Stallion in Paris. A globalized industry makes it easier to share horses and share bloodlines.”

Maintaining the Midwest website is critical to keep information current for all. But Midwest also believes in the power of print in journals like Arabian Horse Times. To David, exposure is critical. “We update our website and ads all the time so that the industry, the local community, and the world know that we have fine animals available for sale. Sometimes a horse is there for a day and it sells, and there are some that have been here a year and have not sold. So, I don’t think there’s a crystal ball.” According to David, the easiest horses to market are the best up-and-coming yearling fillies and colts in the months leading up to the Scottsdale and Las Vegas World Cup shows. The classes swell to 60-100 fillies vying for the prestigious win and in some cases, great prize money in the Signature and Auction programs. This opens the door to a hot secondary market of the very finest yearlings, many of which are sold on speculation. “They may sell one, or two, or three times prior to the gate opening, so the market for those young babies is always strong,” David says. Hence the never-ending search for the next great offering. “When it gets to late summer or fall, we’re already traveling the globe lining up the Scottsdale yearlings” he continues. “Currently at Midwest, we probably have 20 to 25 spectacular individuals of various bloodlines of that age.” There are many factors at play that determine how long it will take to prepare each horse for sale. Because the horses arrive in various degrees of condition, each timeline is variable. And the price will be set based upon the horse in ultimate condition. The biggest single factor in determining value of any horse is quality. Boggs explains, “A high quality horse always attracts interest. If you want to ask a reasonable price, you have to have that horse in top condition and it has to learn how to be presented. It takes time to condition and prepare. You don’t put a house on the market without first grooming the landscaping or giving it a paint job. The horse, too, will have to be prepared for marketing.” Another huge submarket for Midwest has always included the management of breeding stallions. Whether marketing multi-million dollar superstars like *Padron, Bey Shah+, Fame VF, Magnum Psyche,

DA Valentino, *Pogrom, and Baahir El Marwan, or marketing huge amounts of breeding income from today’s giants: *Kahil Al Shaqab, * Baha AA, *Hariry Al Shaqab, Vitorio TO, Aria Impresario, and Conquest BR, great breeding stallions are great for business. Boggs and his team take his position as breeder very seriously. “I think that Midwest is probably the largest breeding station in the world today,” he remarked. “If you add up the satellites and the frozen semen stations for marketing semen abroad, as well as what we breed and ship out of the United States here, Midwest is high on the list. This is a really wonderful thing and a great opportunity for the stallions. Before Vitorio TO went to Michalów State Stud in Poland, he had the opportunity to breed one hundred and fifty plus mares here in the United States, and then at the State Stud Farm in Poland, he had the opportunity to cover many of the most beautiful Polish mares at Michalów over the last two years. This has given Vitorio a tremendous boost now, returning to the Unites States and going into the 2016-breeding season.” Easy shipment of semen makes the stallions more valuable, because they are more accessible to people in all corners of the world. David thinks that it is necessary to shine a bigger spotlight on junior stallions and colts that need to be given a chance. “The senior stallions and top-producing stallions sell Ar abian Horse Times | 6 | Midwest
many, many, more breeding’s, making them even more valuable,” Boggs explains. “Sometimes it’s hard for a young colt to get his foot in the door. We give specials and introductory fees that are extremely reasonable, sometimes to the very, very best stallions. I remember when Magnum Psyche was a yearling; His introductory fee was $1,500 to allow more breeders an opportunity to use him. Now, his $10,000 breeding fee is one of the highest in the industry. Because his fee is higher, the number of mares bred is fewer, but he’s earned that status. At 20 years old, instead of breeding huge volumes, he’s breeding very special and select mares like World Champion Kwestura … he’s going to breed some of the top mares throughout the world.” David and his team at Midwest remain vigilant about orchestrating what comes next in their marketing strategy. The incredible success and spread of the top sire lines Midwest has promoted prompts them to look for a next step. David’s beloved *Padron founded an entire dynasty whose blood is so prevalent; it appears in a huge percentage of today’s pedigrees. For Boggs, that is cause for the next adventure, finding the perfect outcross. “We are excited about *Kahil Al Shaqab and also *Baha AA, both of whom are a complete outcross with no Padron blood, and it makes them extremely popular. *Kahil has six crosses to the immortal *Bask. It’s such an honor, and you feel the presence of his grandsires
when you’re around him. There are few Arabian stallions who can be said to have “founded a dynasty” of their own. Fewer still are those who can take the already great legacy of their foundation and elevate it to new dynastic heights in the span of a single generation. World Champion Kahil Al Shaqab is among the rarest of the rare … a stallion that is creating a Third Dynasty, which is on a trajectory to equal those of his legendary forefathers.
Kahil’s dynasty builds on that of his grandsire, 2001 World Champion Stallion Gazal Al Shaqab (Anaza El Farid x Kajora, by Kaborr) the first in a now impressive list of world champions bred by Al ShaqabMember of Qatar Foundation. Gazal’s influence as a sire stretches around the globe, creating the First Dynasty for Al Shaqab. Kahil Al Shaqab’s sire, Marwan Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame, by Fame VF) was the 2001 World Champion Yearling Colt the same year that his own sire Gazal Al Shaqab won the stallion championship. The generations were already interweaving in a stunning tapestry of excellence. Marwan Al Shaqab added the 2002 World Champion Junior Colt award to his record, then brought home his third world championship in 2008 when he was named World Champion Stallion. At the same show, Marwan gave notice that his own dynasty was now taking root, by earning the Leading Sire award for the second year in a row. Marwan continued that string of World Championship Leading Sire honors for an incredible eight straight years. Kahil Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x OFW Mishaahl, by Mishaah) exemplifies the finest qualities of the Al Shaqab Arabian. Foaled in 2008, the dynamic bay has it all … near-perfect phenotype and the ability to both reproduce and even out produce himself in creating an unprecedented Third Dynasty for Al Shaqab. Named World Gold Champion Junior Colt in Paris in 2011 and World Gold Champion Stallion in 2014, Kahil Al Shaqab has already achieved the remarkable feat of siring at least one world champion for each of the last three years, against the finest competitors on the planet. They include the 2015 World Gold Champion Junior Stallion Morion (x Mesalina, by Ekstern) bred by Michalów State Stud, Poland,

and on lease to Al Thumama Stud. Morion was the clear winner in a very competitive field, splendidly shown by Tom Oben, with five of the eight international judges placing him as their top selection. Morion had served notice the previous year, when he shared the spotlight with his sire while winning the 2014 World Silver Champion Yearling Colt title in Paris. Morion was Polish National Champion Junior Colt earlier in the 2014 season. Kahil Al Shaqab also shared the 2014 Parisian show ring spotlight with his breathtaking daughter Pustynia Kahila (x Pustynna Malwa, by Ekstern), bred and owned by Michalów State Stud, who was named World Gold Champion Yearling Filly. For Kahil, that triumph endorsed the earlier selection of his daughter Minwah (x LC Primavera, by Padrons Psyche),bred by Mohammed Al Sulaiti and owned by Aljassimya Stud, as 2013 World Gold Champion Yearling Filly. With a powerful family dynasty reminiscent of those found at the State Stud Farms in Poland, the maternal side of Kahil Al Shaqab’s pedigree has the genetic power to balance the nearly overwhelming quality of the male line. Those Polish families, like this one, are built on the strength of the dam line and its ability to support the contributions of the sire. Kahil Al Shaqab’s full siblings, Wadee Al Shaqab and Sultanat Al Shaqab are further proof of the prepotency of their bloodlines. Sultanat Al Shaqab recently won the title of 2015 World Silver Champion Yearling Filly, after previously earning the gold championship for yearling fillies in Menton, where her exquisite half-sister D Shireen (x Magic Mon Amour, by Windsprees Mirage) bred and owned by Dubai Stud, was the Silver Champion Yearling Filly. Sultanat began the year by winning the Gold Champion Yearling Filly honors at the Qatar International show by unanimous decision of the judges. Kahil’s brother Wadee Al Shaqab has earned many honors, including 2012 World Gold Champion Colt, 2012 Menton Gold Champion Colt and 2014 Qatar International Gold Champion Stallion. Kahil Al Shaqab spent the 2012 and 2013 breeding seasons on lease to Poland, breeding the finest mares of Janów Podlaski and Michalów. The Polish breeding programs rarely lease outside stallions. It is a testament to their confidence in Kahil Al Shaqab’s quality and ability as a sire that they bred so many of their finest mares to him. The foals that he sired in Poland will undoubtedly continue to add to the breeding program there for generations to come, planting the roots of Kahil Al Shaqab’s Third Dynasty

firmly in Polish soil. The get of Kahil are often solid, dark bays with very little white, or silvery greys, who have the near prefect conformation and exuberant nature of their sire. Kahil Al Shaqab has seven crosses to *Bask++, including the jet-black *Bask++ daughter Balaquina through her black daughter OFW Balarina on his maternal dam line. He has crossed exceptionally well with mares descended from Monogramm, another stallion selected by the Poles and used to great effect. In particular, the daughters of Ekstern (Monogramm x Ernestyna, by *Piechur) have created a beautiful blend with Kahil, as proven by his World Champion offspring. Kahil has sired many other exceptional beauties such as 2015 European Gold Champion Yearling Filly Adelita (x Altamira, by Ekstern) bred and owned by Janów Podlaski. Kahil has also produced excellent foals with daughters of Ganges (Monogramm x Goronna, by *Fanatyk). Among the finest is Janów Podlaski’s 2014 Polish National Champion Junior Filly Al Jazeera (x Alhasa, by Ganges), who entranced the judges and crowd alike with her grace and charm. Al Jazeera continued to add to her honors with the 2015 Bialka Spring Show Gold Champion Junior Mare title and the 2015 Al Khalediah European Horse Festival Gold Champion Junior Mare award. The Kahil Al Shaqab son Paris (x Palmeta, by Ecaho) bred and owned by Janów Podlaski, was the 2015 European Bronze Champion Colt after being named the Gold Champion Junior Colt at the Bialka Spring Show and the 2015 Polish National Junior Champion Stallion. Such success as a sire is no accident. The team at Al Shaqab has spent the better part of two decades learning how to preserve the qualities that they prize in their horses. They have gotten to know the breeding philosophies of the most prominent stud farms in the world during extensive touring. Not only was Kahil Al Shaqab the World Gold Champion Junior Colt, he also won awards for Best Head and Highest Scoring Horse of the show. His 2014 World Gold Champion Stallion title rounded out Kahil’s international show record to date and elevated him into the very top percentage of the illustrious group who have achieved that honor. At Midwest, David Boggs and his team are carefully preparing Kahil Al Shaqab for his American show ring debut. In February of 2016, Kahil will be presented at the 61st Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show at the end of David’s lead. Over 2,400 horses gather there each winter to determine who will be victorious. But only one will emerge as the Scottsdale Senior Champion Stallion. With one of the longest and most significant histories of any Arabian horse show in the world, earning that title is a goal achieved only by the very best. FACES SURROUNDING AHT
Where did you grow up? I was born in the U.S. Army hospital in Nuremberg, Germany, and was imported to America when I was a couple months old (which should mean that my name deserves an asterisk in front of it, right?). We moved a lot, living in New York, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona, New Jersey, and California by the time I turned seven. Being the “new kid on the block” became my norm, and made me comfortable with change. I later lived in Maryland, again California, and in Washington before settling in New York City over four years ago. For nearly a year in 1976, I grew up crossing America on the Bicentennial Wagon Train with my Arabian gelding Valez, aka Candyman.
made resident managers and developed the Arabian Division. Mr. Murdock decided to pursue Arabian breeding thanks to his appreciation of Candyman. Once he made that choice, DHM went all in. Within a few short years he had collected an unparalleled group of primarily Polish Arabian horses. It was a huge responsibility to advise him, and we took that to heart. He provided us nearly unlimited support and resources to nurture our professional growth on behalf of the farm. Mr. Murdock stands out as the person who most affected my adult life. I will always appreciate the confidence he placed in me during the development of Ventura Farms into one of the world’s finest collections of Arabian horses.
Were horses a part of your childhood? I was born loving horses. My very first memory is creeping downstairs to see if Santa had brought me a horse and my bitter disappointment when all I found was a plastic toy. From that time forward, my entire focus was on having a horse of my own, but we were a family of seven living on one income. Other than a few group riding lessons at age eight, my only exposure to horses was via the racing pages of newspapers. I will always consider 1972 Kentucky Derby winner Riva Ridge to be my “first horse.” He was my rock star, and I sent handmade cards and gifts ahead of his scheduled starts. Eventually, my loyalty attracted the attention of his owner, Penny Tweedy. We became pen pals. I still have a note from her, telling me about her up and coming two-year-old, Secretariat. I bet my dad a trip to New York that Secretariat would win the first two jewels of the Triple Crown in 1973, so I was there at Belmont to see his 31-length triumph as he completed the sweep. By far the most exciting event I have ever witnessed. I still watch the replay of that race when I need inspiration.
Is there a particular memory of your days at Ventura Farms that you would like to share? There are so many. It was truly living a dream. Seeing Bandos, elevating as he pranced out of his stall, watching nine Comet daughters peacefully grazing, having National Champion Mares Fame, Dancing Flame, Elkana, Heritage Desiree, and Penicylina all standing before you. Taking a young Marek Trela and Jerzy Białobok, who were, I believe, on their first visit to America, to Disneyland. Riding Zadymka bareback up and down the mountain trails on the farm. I especially loved foaling season and attended as many births as I possibly could, which was reciprocated when I visited the mares during my own labor. My son Brandon was probably the only human ever born on Ventura Farms. Bill was standing in the van with Fantazja during a Dynasty shoot when I told him that my water had broken. The next morning, Brandon was born while a fight scene was filmed in our front yard. Now that was a moment to remember! Needless to say, Brandon was the darling of the cast and crew and engaged in crawling races with Heather Locklear on the lawn!
Please tell our readers how you came to be involved in the Arabian horse industry. My neighbors rescued Candyman from neglect, and I began to ride him for them when I was 17. He was the first Arabian I ever rode. We fell in love at once, our minds melded. The following year, he was up for sale for $800, an impossible sum for me. In desperation, I auditioned for a TV game show and bought Candyman with my winnings! From then on, I immersed myself in everything Arabian. When Bill Gregory and I returned to California after the Wagon Train, we became the residential caretakers for a small farm with a few Arabians. I rode the splendid stallion Zarafe, a Witez II and Ferseyn grandson, and had the pleasure of showing him to wins in Ladies Side Saddle. We were offered a position at Saddle Rock Ranch in Malibu when they were just beginning to establish their program. We moved to Hidden Valley, eventually meeting our neighbor David H. Murdock, who had recently purchased Ventura Farms, the 2,000-acre property across the street. After originally being hired to drive the carriages that we sold, Bill and I were
What do you like best about the Arabian horse community? I really like seeing how many friendships have endured and flourished over the years. When people share a passion for horses, it is often the only similarity necessary to forge lasting bonds. The family aspect of raising horses is very rich, with multiple generations contributing and enjoying the rewards of breeding and owning them. I love the way that we see each other at various events in places all over the globe. These days, I really appreciate being able to see and meet the people and horses that I have written about. Tell us how and when you came to be affiliated with Arabian Horse Times. Once I had moved to New York to attend NYU, I was contacted by an old acquaintance from my Ventura years, none other than Jeff Wallace. He was also living in NYC, so we met for lunch and forged a friendship. He left New York and ended up working for Arabian Horse Times. About a year ago, I began writing some stories for AHT on Jeff ’s behalf, which quickly grew into a halftime and then

full-time position as a staff writer. Currently, I am writing non-stop and focused on helping Jeff and Mieke Opsteyn with the launch of AHT Abroad in 2016, hence my title of Associate Director of International Relations. It was unexpected and amazing to see how my life has circled back to the Arabian horse. It is a great pleasure, and I am grateful for the opportunity. You have written many articles that are research heavy. How do you differentiate one subject from the rest? All of those papers I had to research and write at NYU greatly enhanced my skills, and it was a good thing they did! I got used to juggling mountains of research on various topics. At home, I am old school in that I track my projects on a white-board as well as in physical or computer files. I love to look at subjects from multiple angles while setting aside any pre-conceived notions. I am fascinated by the “why” behind everything and like to find out new pieces of information, spending my initial time in that mode when I am writing. I can have several stories in rough draft at the same time because I initially mull them over quite a bit before they spill out onto the page. Because I generally write the whole rough draft chronologically, I appreciate having a word or page count and a hard deadline. Your stories are thoughtful and historical. Have you always enjoyed writing? I have always enjoyed it, although it was never my focused intent to write professionally. My best friend Cary and I wrote scripts and stories in junior high and I once had a poem about Triple Crown winner Count Fleet published in The Thoroughbred Record. At Ventura Farms, I honed my writing skills by composing correspondence, ad copy, and legal arguments for Mr. Murdock, and learned to write with his voice. As a candidate for a seat on the Seattle School Board, I wrote and delivered content that resonated with a diverse constituency; as a public education advocate, I wrote persuasive pieces and presented them to the Legislature in Olympia. At NYU, I was selected to write and deliver the valedictory address to my graduating class, a huge honor.
You are a nominee for the 2015 Readers’ Choice Award for best editorial. What does this mean to you? I am extremely honored. It is a lovely validation of the work that I have been doing, and I deeply appreciate it. I take all of my projects very seriously, and set my personal bar as high as I can. In school that translated to earning my degree in Organizational Behavior & Change magna cum laude, here it manifests in these nominations. The story that I wrote with Jeff Wallace honoring the inspirational 30-year relationship between John Rannenberg and Karl and Roxann Hart was fun to work on because I knew of them from the “old days.” It was wonderful to celebrate their enduring partnership. And my solo piece on Manny Lawrence was super fun to write. I got to learn about him from scratch, and he was such a pleasure. He really came alive for me, and I hope for the readers. What do you like the best about writing for AHT? I really enjoy the process of writing, and coming out with a final product that realistically portrays the subject. The magazine staff is very supportive and tolerant of my limited publishing knowledge. They take our words and design the piece into something really special. This job is a fantastic way to learn about the modern Arabian. So much has changed since I was active. I love traveling, and enjoyed rendezvousing with Jeff in Germany to work on stories and attend the Egyptian Event Europe. I was happy to experience the World Championships for the first time, and then get to bring it alive for those who stayed at home.
I love history and how the past impacts the present. When I can’t visit the show, farm or client in person, I try to get as many visuals from the Internet as I can in addition to any printed material. Jeff has an encyclopedic knowledge of Arabian bloodlines and history that always adds so much color and authenticity to the things we write together. Someday, I plan to write Candyman’s incredible life story, and have another project on tap that springs from my obsession with the Etruscan civilization, their history, and their horses. I am crazy about Lady Anne Blunt and want to explore her extraordinary life. I owe her for importing Rodania, the foundation mare of the dam line that produced Candyman ten generations later. What makes you happy? I love to attend live theatre, and to walk on the bridle trails in Central Park, where horses still have the right of way. I love to travel, and was very happy exploring Etruscan tombs in Tuscany during my semester abroad at NYU Florence. I was super happy this Christmas when both of my children were in New York with me, the very first time that only the three of us had spent the holidays together. I am happy when a client is pleased with their story. I am happy when I am learning something new. I can remember many blissful moments riding my horse out on the trails. I believe in the pursuit of happiness.

How do you think your friends would describe you? Hopefully as someone they can depend on, a lifelong learner with an optimistic attitude and integrity, who enjoys the process of change. Still, they may just as easily say naïve, impetuous, emotion-driven, and devil-may-care! What is one of your “guilty pleasures”? I love to watch ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and ‘The Voice’…the people who compete on those shows amaze me. They challenge themselves to learn things that demand near perfection, and then perform live in front of millions of people. They have my respect.
Where do you see yourself in five years? In Hollywood, accepting the Oscar for my original screenplay about Lady Anne Blunt! Candyman’s life story will have spun off into a series of young adult stories and a TV series. I will probably have found a way to complete an Executive MBA program at NYU or Columbia. If I am no longer in the Arabian business, I will likely be ensconced in a job at one of those institutions or in some way connected with education. I could easily still be employed at AHT, with AHT Abroad thriving and more stories to write than we can even imagine. I will be applauding Joy as she takes her bows on Broadway and I will probably have moved further uptown to get more space than I currently have in my sweet studio.
Do you have any life goals that you are still seeking? Oh yes, I have a secret desire to start a YouTube campaign to make me a minor celebrity so that I will be invited to be a contestant on DWTS! I have always wanted to win the U.S. National Championship in Ladies Side Saddle. I earned my only Top Ten in that category in Louisville, KY riding my other fabulous gelding, Moving Violation, my biggest show ring thrill. I used to dream of judging the Polish Nationals. Is there anything you regret or wish that you could have a “do over” on? Well, I would certainly rethink leaving Ventura Farms! I left the Arabian business pretty much completely for many years. Bill only kept a few horses for pleasure, and still has Legion VF, a stunning, 27-year young look-alike son of Bandos and the lovely Garnet (Bask x Gdynia). I was saddened when I learned of the dispersal of the Ventura foundation stock. We had intended to maintain a source in America of the so-called “Pure Polish” bloodlines for all to draw from. 30 years later, some sire lines are dominating pedigrees so deeply that a “new” influx of “old Polish” might have been in demand! On the other hand, had I not moved to Seattle, I would not be the mother of my beautiful daughter, Joy.

A TOUCH OF ST YLE Julie Pat ton
When it comes to your photography and design, what would describe your sense of style? Classic, clean and light. When you brand something to market, what do you feel is the most important aspect to take into consideration? Authenticity. The brand has to reflect the product—in both honesty of representation and personal style. The marketing of anything, whether it’s a horse, a business or a person, should entice the viewer to want to know more, but without leaving them guessing. You have been involved with various different aspects of the Arabian horse industry; please share your road of travel in the industry. I still pinch myself when I look back on my 30 years in the Arabian horse industry. It started with a Bask Flame gelding that was my 4-H horse as a kid in Santa Fe. That horse and I did it all together: barrel racing, jumping, English, western, you name it. I’m so glad I started on an Arabian or I never would have had the opportunity to try so many different disciplines. After I moved to Scottsdale, I team penned with Jack Teague on the weekends (so much fun to clean house on an Arabian in a Quarter Horse dominated sport) and worked as a large animal ambulatory tech for a veterinary hospital that serviced many of the great Scottsdale Arabian horse farms. From there, I went to CSU to study equine reproduction. I worked with many Arabian stallions bred by Lucy Whittier,
Magness Arabians and others while conducting reproductive safety trials for the FDA. In Florida, I was honored to freeze semen on the great Versace and flushed embryos from Precious as Gold during my time at Peterson & Smith Equine Reproduction Center. Once I moved to California, I landed my dream job (didn’t even know it at the time!) of Breeding Manager at Ventura Farms. We stood nine national level Arabian stallions (including Psymadre, Alada Baskin and TF Psymreekhe), foaled up to 50 mares a year and shipped to hundreds of mares across the country. It is at Ventura Farms that I learned what it takes to successfully market an Arabian horse and breeding program. I was surrounded by the best and learned about photography and design from our work with Jenn Trickey, Jerry Sparagowski and Scott Trees. I learned about customer service, hospitality and managing a show string from Joyce Schroeder, Rich Simpkins, Joanne Fox, Troy Smith and Bill Melendez. We were the “Dream Team” and we truly lived a blessed life; one that I look back on fondly and has led to lifelong friendships. When I came back to Colorado, I had my own small breeding program with my foundation mare, a straight Spanish *Sasaki daughter that I purchased from Midcrest. Soon after that, I started a successful photography business that is still a blend of about 50/50 horses and people. I’ve recently gone back to my roots by taking over

the breeding work at Shellbird at Rising Hearts Ranch in Silt, Colorado, as well as handling the majority of their photography, sales videos and marketing needs. It’s great fun to do a sunrise photo shoot, then collect a stallion, freeze semen and ultrasound mares during the day, before shooting a sales video in the late afternoon light.

Is there a favorite Arabian horse that you have photographed and why? Hands down, KM Bugatti. Bugatti is almost human-like in his characteristics and interactions with “his” people. He’s sweet, funny, and intuitive and I

always learn something from him each time I get to photograph him. When you design an advertising campaign for a client, what is the most important aspect that you take into consideration? Considering that I am primarily a photographer by trade, I make sure they have impactful images of whatever it is they are trying to market. Especially in the Arabian horse industry, the photos make or break a project. Images that are out of focus, have a cluttered background or are generally unflattering, are so difficult to design around. First impressions are as important as ever. The Santa Ynez Gelding Futurity by EMMA MAXWELL

This May 17th-21st, the third annual Santa Ynez Gelding Futurity will take place as an online auction on the Santa Ynez Valley Association (SYVAHA) website. An innovation of the SYVAHA, this new enterprise is aimed squarely at widening the base of Arabian ownership. It creates a hot spot of local Arabian activity that involves Amateurs and young horses, the seed corn to growing a new generation of Arabian horse lovers. Eligible geldings must be bred within 50 miles of Santa Ynez, and their breeders also must invest into a jackpot for the new owners when they consign their horses to the auction. This provides very attractive money prizes for yearling, two-year-old and three-year-old geldings to win. The sold geldings must be shown by an Amateur to win at the annual Arabian Foal Festival which takes place on August 26-28, 2016, in the popular tourist town of Los Olivos, Calif., as it was last year. So much Arabian promotion is focused on global reach and cheerleading the champions in the penthouse suite, that we can forget we need to invest in keeping the basement in perfect condition too. The basement needs a constant supply of first-time Arabian buyers of all means and abilities to keep the breed moving forward. This program is focused on those horse lovers who want to enjoy their time with a beautiful, trainable horse that they can keep at home. It offers the opportunity for that owner to reach achievable goals that they can complete together with that horse, as well as meeting a group of likeminded people to share the experience with. Finally, the Santa Ynez Futurity offers a great financial incentive to get started with an Arabian gelding! For this year, the 2014 Santa Ynez Futurity
Geldings will be coming back for their third time and competing under saddle for $15,000.75, to be split by the first three horses of the nine eligible. Last year’s entrants will be returning to compete in In-Hand Trail and competing for $10,982.47, to be split by the first three of seven entrants. To breeders it offers the chance to move yearling geldings off their property and into active promotion. While America leads the world in the amount of divisions you can compete in on an Arabian gelding, you usually have to wait a couple more years before people get around to buying and enjoying them. This program gives the geldings a head start. It also promotes a basic level of training in the geldings that ensures their possibilities for a happy useful life. It also enables them to use their yearling geldings as an investment in promotion, both for their farm and for the Arabian breed, plus 10% of the winning money returns to the breeder of the gelding. To new owners it offers an almost unheard of chance to get your money back in just a few months with a yearling gelding; with two more chances to win in the following two years, and have fun doing it! In their yearling year, the geldings are shown at halter by Amateurs only, at a relaxed stand with no whip and ranked by the three judges according to their type, conformation and movement.

In their two-year-old year, they compete at in-hand trail and are scored on their accuracy and obedience, making a new set of attributes, plus the time their handler spends training them, the important factors. As three-year-olds, they will complete a basic requirement under saddle suitable for their young age—a walk/trot trail class, again, Amateurs only. The positive feedback from those attending the competition has been incredible. “Community is the key word, with fun competition,” says inaugural winner Kris Johnson about her experience. “The competition begins with the bidding for your favorite yearling. The purchase price is not part of the equation for what you receive in camaraderie, giggles, and then prize money. The competition is simple and all-amateur, and for all ages, which adds a unique flavor for the handlers and a more equal playing field. I was lucky to choose a winner the first year, and I am now hooked, line and sinker. I plan on being a part of this Futurity every year to come. I think it has better odds than Powerball and is way more fun! Carol Steppe of Daydream Arabians, well known and experienced in the Arabian horse marketplace, also had positive comments. “I picked out my favorite, a WH Justice gelding out of a Wayne Newton bred mare, and was lucky
to get him in the exciting live auction last year, as a twoyear-old. We showed him in the In-Hand Trail class and we came in second and won $4,500! We made a profit already, and still have a sweetheart of a gelding to break, ride and show. He is beautiful, smart, level headed, willing and kind—just a lovely Arabian! It is my belief that we should begin prize money classes for geldings starting at the local show level and going through regionals all the way to U.S. Nationals. It would create an important market for young geldings and encourage entry level people, as well as seasoned amateurs, to go to breeders looking for young geldings to show and win money from a young age, and then throughout their entire show lives. From my personal first-hand account and going all the way, it’s a very significant way to truly improve the Arabian horse industry, and one of my favorites. Go shopping for a gelding and have a blast!” It is hoped that other Arabian-rich areas can join in the fun and set up their own Gelding Futurity franchise. The SYVAHA welcomes all comers to the Arabian Foal Festival this year to see the Futurity in action, and don’t forget to check out those geldings when they come online!

Spotlight Excitement ... FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REGION 12 SPOTLIGHT FUTURITY Q: WHAT IS THE SPOTLIGHT FUTURITY? A: The Spotlight Stallion Futurity is a nationwide futurity program based in the Southeast in conjunction with Region XII Championships held the first week of May in Perry, GA. Q: HOW LONG HAS THE PROGRAM BEEN IN EXISTENCE? A: The Spotlight Futurity has been in existence since 2006. Q: WHAT IS A RIGHT HOLDER? A: A Right Holder has paid a onetime fee for their inclusion in the Spotlight Futurity and for voter rights. Each Right Holder may sponsor up to 2 stallions for every right owned. Each right, owned by a right holder must sponsor a minimum of 1 stallion per year to maintain their Right Holder status in good standing. Q: CAN I PURCHASE A RIGHT? A: The Spotlight Futurity has a limited number of Rights. At times Rights may become available. Please contact the Secretary kennakayburbeck@aol.com for updated information. Q: DO I NEED TO BE A RIGHT HOLDER? A: You do not have to be a Right Holder to participate in the Spotlight Futurity. Inclusion in the Spotlight program is obtained by Stallion nominations and mare nominations and accompanying foals for the applicable show years. Q: WHEN IS THE AUCTION? A: The auction event is held in the latter part of the week on Thursday evening, during the Region XII Arabian Championships. Q: CAN I COME TO THE AUCTION IF I AM NOT A RIGHT HOLDER, STALLION OWNER, OR BIDDER? A: Yes. Everyone is welcome to attend the Spotlight Futurity Auction Event. Q: ARE TABLES ONLY FOR SPONSORS? A: Sponsor tables are customarily reserved towards the front of the arena, with other tables open on a first come first served basis. Q: WHAT IS A MARE NOMINATION? A: A mare carrying a foal by a nominated stallion in the Spotlight program is eligible to be nominated and allows the unborn foal to show in Spotlight classes at a fee of $100. Mare nominations are due by December 31 of the year of conception. Q: WHAT IS A STALLION NOMINATION? A: The Spotlight Stallion Futurity Auction is open to all purebred Arabian stallions which are sponsored by a eligible right holder in good standing for a nomination fee of $500. Q: CAN I NOMINATE A STALLION IF I AM NOT A RIGHT HOLDER? A: No. Only right holders in good standing are able to sponsor stallions into the Spotlight Futurity Auction. Please contact one of our Directors or Secretary for sponsor availability. Q: HOW CAN I PAY FOR MY NOMINATIONS? A: All nominations may be paid for by check or credit card. In the case of a credit card payment, a 3% service fee is added to the total. Q: WHAT ARE AUCTION CERTIFICATES? A: Auction Certificates are prepared and mailed out during the year that you will be using your Auction breeding. These certificates should be mailed in with your mare nomination to allow the foal she is carrying to be eligible to show in the Spotlight Auction Class. Q: ARE THERE YEARLY RENOMINATION FEES FOR THE SPOTLIGHT ELIGIBLE FOALS? A: No. Q: WHAT YEARS MAY I USE MY AUCTION BREEDING? A: Auction breedings may be used in either of the two years following the applicable stallion auction. Q: WHAT IF I DO NOT GET MY MARE IN FOAL THE YEAR FOLLOWING THE AUCTION? A: Current rules allow for a onetime rollover to the following year for any reason. See above question related to auction breeding. A rollover request notice must be received by a member of the spotlight board or secretary prior to December 31 of the year mare is bred. Q: DO I HAVE TO EITHER OWN A STALLION OR BUY AN AUCTION BREEDING TO SHOW IN THE SPOTLIGHT CLASSES? A: No. The Spotlight Program is open to everyone to nominate foals sired by all spotlight stallions whether auction participant or normal futurity participant. Q: WHAT IF I HAVE MULTIPLE FOALS TO SHOW IN THE SPOTLIGHT AUCTION CLASS? A: If an individual, or household, finds themselves with more than one foal nominated and qualified to be shown in either the Auction Yearling Filly or Auction Yearling Colt class in the same calendar year, the participating owner will have the ability to select any qualified amateur handler to show the additional entry/entries as long as they themselves are showing an entry in the class. The selected amateur handler must be qualified under USEF rules to show any qualified and nominated entries. Q: WHAT IF I BREED TO A STALLION THAT IS NOT CURRENTLY IN THE PROGRAM? A: There may be additional opportunities available to stallions not currently in the program. Contact your Spotlight Board of Directors or Secretary for more details. The Region 12 Spotlight Program is an excellent venue for our breeders on the East Coast and across the country to showcase the product of their breeding program and have the ability to gain payback in the process. The fact that this program is combined with the largest and most competitive regional show is a bonus. I feel that support for this program, and other similar programs, is essential for encouraging future interest in breeding Arabian horses and strongly encourage everyone to get involved with the Spotlight Program. —Ted Carson

The Spotlight is important for many reasons. First it adds value to the babies that are enrolled in the program by giving them a strong futurity program to compete for major cash prizes. This should improve the marketability of any horse enrolled in the program. The Spotlight Program also is one of the few programs that gives the owner of the enrolled breeding Stallions value for their participation. Every Stallion owner receives an Auction breeding eligibility that gives them access to the money classes for one of their Stallion’s designated foals. This is a big benefit for the Stallion owner in that he can compete w/ his foal in Spotlight Classes or use the foal’s eligibility to improve it’s marketability. Stallion owners can also market to potential breeding clients that all foals of their stallions are eligible to show in the regular Spotlight classes and have a chance to win some serious money. —Frank Chisholm

We are fortunate to have passionate talented members who continue to promote Arabian and Half-Arabian reining horses. Our entries are up for the reining classes this year which is a strong sign that the interest in these beautiful horses continues to grow. Growing Interest Supports Added Classes, Amateurs And Opportunities For World-Class Competition by Sue Adams The 2016 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show marks the 13th annual Arabian and Half-Arabian Reining Horse Futurity Classic, chock-full of new opportunities and excitement for all participants. Founded in 1998, the Arabian Reining Horse Association (ARHA) membership promotes the natural athletic abilities and versatility of Arabian and Half-Arabian reining horses. Each year the organization has expanded the class schedule in response to ever increasing participation and competitor’s requests. Futurity Classic competitors vie for an array of prizes including cash awards, saddles, trophies and buckles.
“Scottsdale” is very important in the Arabian world. A win at the ARHA Arabian and Half-Arabian Futurity in Scottsdale launches the show season with high recognition in the push toward other big wins. Widely recognized as the largest and best known Arabian show in the world, this event attracts hordes of Arabian horse aficionados from around the globe. And the Scottsdale Show is a very special draw, especially for growing interest in reining amongst the amateur riders. Reining competitions are all about action, not only on the part of horses and riders, but with a lot of vocal support from the audience. Competitors in each class ride specific patterns and are judged by their ability to ride that pattern as perfectly as possible. The horses are highly responsive to rider queues making this sport both a mental and physical challenge for riders, and is sometimes described as western riding dressage. The popularity of reining is evidenced by the official acceptance of the sport over 63 years ago by both the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF). In 1966, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) was founded and held its first Futurity in Columbus, Ohio. Since then, the NRHA has expanded with worldwide membership, finding great popularity in European events. The standards for competitions and many of the riding patterns established by the NRHA have been gradually incorporated in a number of other equine associations, including the USEF, AQHA and FEI World Equestrian Games™, the international governing body for all Olympic equestrian disciplines. The World Equestrian Games added reining as a recognized discipline in cooperation with the NRHA in 2000. The NRHA’s judging system is a highly acclaimed format for the judging of equine events that includes technical and stylistic elements coupled with considerable difficulty.

“Arabian reining is currently the fastest growing of all disciplines and has attracted many new participants in the past decade,” explains ARHA President Judy Kibler. “This growth prompts us to create additional opportunities for all participants. Two years ago we added National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) based Youth 10 & Under Short Stirrup classes to the schedule with resounding success. Young riders are very enthusiastic about reining and by request, this year we’ve added a championship class to their program. Last year we also added a new Adult Amateur to Ride class for both purebreds and Half-Arabians and for 2016 we offer riders expanded opportunities to compete by splitting the classes down further into age groups. A total of five new classes are in the 2016 schedule.” Four- and five-year-old horses compete in the Arabian and Half-Arabian Futurity Classic with elimination rounds leading to finals classes in the Wells Fargo Advisors sponsored arena. Amateur riders can also participate in the Non-Pro Derby, which draws a lot of attention and a great deal of enthusiasm. Open to adult amateur riders with horses aged 6, 7 and 8 years, the Derby is a jackpot format. This event provides a good reining horse an opportunity to successfully compete for a number of years and offers newcomers an affordable opportunity to buy an older well trained horse to start competing. This class runs concurrent with the AAOTR championship class. Because of the high level of Scottsdale competition, people from around the world come here to compete against the best of the best. Austrian veterinarian Leona Dries, the winner of the 2015 Arabian Reining AATR on TA Markoni, is a multi-time Scottsdale participant. Leona and her mother Petra Dries of Gut Fronleitenhof, in Krumbach, Austria, are the owners of Baikal, the multi-time champion European reining horse. Reining is popular throughout the EU and especially popular in Italy where there are numerous events. Leona and Petra are regulars at the Scottsdale Show and rate the ARHA Futurity event as one of their favorite shows of the year. “As people discover reining, participation becomes a family and friends affair and draws even more people to the action. What begins as one family member riding, usually doesn’t stay that way for very long,” says ARHA Treasurer Hoyt Rose. “We reiners are very supportive of each other. Because each rider is judged on an individual ride, other competitors are on the rail cheering on the rider in the ring which is rather unusual in horse show competition. People are drawn to that kind of fun and camaraderie; the atmosphere is very welcoming due to all of the laughter and good-natured humor in the arena. “I think reining is also unique in that people get involved in this sport at all ages,” Rose continues. “Our Youth division is active, but we have any number of strong amateur competitors who actually didn’t start riding reiners until retirement, and I think that says a great deal of the appeal of our sport.” Ar abian Horse Times | 9 | Reining
Marjorie J. Carr of Miami, Florida, an accomplished amateur rider, breeder and judge, is proof positive of reining’s growing popularity with amateurs. A horse show veteran in saddle seat, she grew up riding and has shown nearly every horse breed. Two years ago she tried out a working cow horse for her mother at nationals and found she really liked the ride. Last year she bought a reiner. “You just have to experience the thrill of a good ride on a reiner! Extreme fun is my best description,” she exclaims. Cori Sampson Vokoun of Buckshot Farms in Lincoln, Neb., appreciates that responsive attitude and ability to focus that makes a good reining horse. “What I like the most about riding reiners is that as a rider you have control of your own performance. You know what the pattern is, you have a plan to ride to that pattern and you know how your ride goes. Reining is addictive,” she states enthusiastically. “We breed reiners and are so pleased to find more and more people interested in Arabians and Half-Arabians in this sport.” Reining’s ability to draw loyal support is well evidenced by returning sponsorships. The 2016 Scottsdale Show Arabian Slide Competition Novice Riders and Calcutta Auction Add Excitement and Fun to Friendly Competition by Sue Adams
The crowd-pleasing Arabian Reining Horse Association’s (ARHA) “Celebrity Slide” presented by Markel Insurance returns to the Equidome at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show on Monday, February 15th at 6:00 p.m. This competitive event has a welldeserved reputation as being lively, spirited and very entertaining, even for those with no knowledge of the sport of reining. In fact, a lack of knowledge about reining is one of the underlying premises for this competition as all the riders are reining novices but are names well known in the industry in other disciplines. The Slide started in 2010 with an idea by Joe Betten, one of the three “Founding Fathers” of the ARHA Futurity. He suggested that ARHA leverage reining horse owners’ willingness to allow other people to ride their horses. Invite riders from other disciplines to enjoy a few training sessions pared with reining trainers and then add a bit of friendly competition he reasoned. And, in the reining horse crowd, a friendly wager always sweetens the deal, so add a Calcutta-style auction of these pairs of novice riders and trainers with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the ARHA and the remainder going to the buyer of the winning team. Thus began the “Celebrity Slide,” and for

2016, this crowd favorite returns to the show’s opening long weekend. Trainers for this year include some of the biggest winning names in the business, Russ Brown of Diamond B Training in Newberg, Oregon; Gordon Potts of The Brass Ring, Burleson, TX; Doug Stewart from Doug Stewart Stables in Junction City, Oregon; Colby Powell of Colby Powell Performance Horses in Scottsdale, Arizona; and Crystal McNutt of Crystal McNutt Performance Horses, also in Scottsdale. Names of the novice competitors are being kept under wraps at press time, but according to Crystal, who is coordinating this year’s team pairings, the novice names come from the ranks of very well-known performance people and the competitors are determined. Colby Powell is also expecting to see some great rides in this year’s event. “All of our competitors ride well, but the requirement to accurately ride the pattern in order to score adds that unknown. We trainers can coach
the techniques of each riding element, like the spin or slide, but each rider has the challenge of riding that pattern precisely—or riding out with a no score. And most of the competitors aren’t accustomed to being alone in the ring in front of the judges either; reining is a different type of showing for them. All part of what makes this event so much fun for everyone.” “The Celebrity Slide represents the best of what reining is all about,” explains ARHA president, Judy Kibler. “Sharing good times, good horses, friendly competition and a lot of fun for everyone. And as an added bonus, we’re raising some money for the future of reining with this event, making it even better. One quickly marvels at the quiet efficiency of Crystal and Mike’s operation. This is a busy training barn. Usually you’ll be riding alongside Crystal, her assistants and amateurs each aspiring to take their horse to its highest potential. All the while, Crystal is watching every single rider and horse, this while typically riding one of her many ‘youngsters.’ Crystal laughs, “My short attention span likely enables me to take in all that’s going on in our arena. I’m happiest looking over a lot of action and assessing what each rider and their horse are doing.” Crystal can take in and act on all this action, yet she has a unique ability in allowing her folks to figure it all out for themselves in their own time. It’s an infectious style of teaching that quickly gets one hooked! Several friends and family recently came together to pay tribute to Crystal by sharing stories of her love of horses, her competitive spirit, and her innate kindness and caring. How has this remarkable young woman from South Texas created such a dedicated following? Whether a beginner in reining or a multiple national champion amateur, Crystal McNutt gives you her all.

Tom McNutt
Crystal’s father, Tom, is a fixture at McNutt Performance Horses, attending nearly all show competitions. Tom, an entrepreneur, has always encouraged individuality, integrity, happiness and hard work in his children.
While Tom insisted Crystal attend college (she attended Louisiana State University), he supported her decision to leave university after one semester and go out on her own as a professional horse trainer. Tom proudly states. “From the beginning, Crystal’s business has always supported itself. She and her husband, Mike, have carefully built their ranch to maximize their business—for the horses, staff and clients.” Early on, Tom saw Crystal’s future somehow connected with animals— in her case Arabian horses. Tom reminisces “One of Crystal’s first horse shows was in Tulsa. She was three years old. We hauled all the way up there for one class, Western Walk/ Trot. Well, Crystal won the class, exited and announced she was never doing walk/trot again! She persuaded us to post enter her in the western class aged 11 & Under and won that too! The show committee took away her walk/trot ribbon and Crystal never looked back in her pursuit of training Arabian horses!”

Cotton McNutt
Cotton is Crystal’s younger sister by only twenty months. Best friends and sisters both, Crystal and Cotton share a close and dear relationship. Cotton confesses, “Crystal and I think we are hilarious. We are constantly laughing, whether engaged in naming horses (one of our favorites), to sharing our daily lives on frequent phone calls despite our busy careers.”
Cotton’s purchase of multiple champion purebred All Maxed Out RA (aka ‘Gopher’) illustrates their true sisterly bond. “A couple years ago I told Crystal I wanted to buy a young purebred reiner,” Cotton shares. “Crystal spotted a very young Gopher who was being offered at a very high price. With Crystal’s assured, ‘Trust me,’ I gulped, bought Gopher (without telling my husband!) and hoped for the best. The following year, Gopher was Scottsdale Futurity Champion with Andrea Fappani, Las Vegas Futurity Champion with Crystal, Las Vegas High Roller Non-Pro Champion with myself, and U.S. National Champion Reining Purebred Junior Horse with Crystal. I also earned a top ten with Gopher at the same U.S. Nationals—he was exhausted by then! Cotton concludes, “Whether friends or family, you are family at McNutt Performance Horses. Crystal is your biggest advocate; generous beyond measure. I believe this is why she continues to have so many long term clients, yet invites a warm welcome to new clients, too.” Ar abian Horse Times | 37 | Reining
Dick Ames
Reflecting back nearly twenty years, Dick smiles, “I just may be Crystal’s first client. She was only eighteen years old, had just left college and was striking out on her own. I had seen Crystal show over the years, first winning an AHSA stock seat medal class at our Red Wing, Minn. show. She was only about seven years old. It was clear this little girl was going places in our breed.” Dick continues, “Our first horse show together was in Del Mar. We were showing Country Boy, a truly tough horse who many times had stopped so hard, I was literally black and blue! From there we developed a close and dedicated friendship, with many horses and plenty of great wins. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for Crystal and her husband Mike. We have never had a disagreement and don’t believe we ever will.” Dick foresees, “From our beginnings with Country Boy to our prized stallion TA Mozart, we see continued adventures with Crystal and McNutt Performance Horses.”

Joe Betten
Long an influential participant and advocate for the Arabian breed, Joe has been a part of Arabian horse reining for nearly twenty years—more than fifteen of those years with McNutt Performance Horses. Joe’s and Crystal’s friendship began at Canadian Nationals. Joe chuckles, ‘That year I ran a pattern so fast, the judges nearly jumped the wall!” Observing Crystal’s patience with horses and people, he joined up with Crystal’s training barn. “At one time I had sixteen horses in training with Crystal,” laughs Joe. “We once joked about acquiring a fifteen horse rig and taking the whole herd on the road—kind of a reining horse rock show! We’ve had many great show moments together, but our proudest was taking Custom Gale to his national titles. Crystal performs patterns on him equally well with a bridle or without.”
Joe admires Crystal’s ability to “allow one to grow at the pace they desire.” To that end, Joe attributes Crystal for getting his wife Michele Blackwell-Betten involved with reining, saying, “Now we enjoy the reining sport together. I’ll always be grateful to Crystal for making this happen!”

Mike Brock
Mike and Crystal have been married since 2003. Both tireless workers, their biggest shared accomplishment is buying and building their own Scottsdale ranch purchased five years ago after leasing for nearly 10. Building multiple barns and the facility first, their home is soon to break ground. Mike reflects, “Crystal and I met about a year before we married. I was doing work on a nearby ranch when Crystal came over and asked if she could use our arena. Her current facility didn’t allow cows and Crystal wanted to do cow work with some of her reiners.” Mike, an accomplished roper and Crystal, quickly became close. Mike is impassioned about his wife, “Crystal works harder than anyone I know. She strives continuously to keep our dream fresh and alive of owning a happy, successful, business and home. We have great fortune, a great life with our friends and family, and appreciate this every single day.”

Phyllis has been a competitor in the western division for decades. Another long-time client of Crystal, Phyllis shares, “Horses sense Crystal’s ability to read, analyze and get through to them. She is always thinking about every equine individual under her care and how she can make them their best. She is always growing and learning, continuing to ride with other trainers to collaborate with them. Her honesty and focus bode well for horses and humans alike. It is truly a gift for a trainer to teach you how to both ride and show your horse. I am certain this is how she was able to start a successful training barn at the young age of eighteen!”

“Early on, all the show kids including my daughter, Heidi, looked up to Crystal,” recalls Audrey. “We have known Crystal for over twenty five years, fifteen of those in her training barn. FACES & PLACES RO OK E R T R A I N I NG S TA BL E … held an open barn on January 16th and 17th, in conjunction with Select Show Horses at their farm in Fenton, Mich. Over 85 people were in attendance to view 21 sale horses that were presented individually. The horses available were priced between $7,500 and $35,000, with a goal of creating an opportunity for buyers to look at a large number of sale horses in one location. “It can be diff icult to justify the expense of traveling to multiple farms in search of a $15,000 horse,” says Carmelle Rooker of Rooker Training Stable. “Our idea was to bring a number of horses in the middle market price range to one location to help buyers have a one stop shopping experience.” The open barn also offered an English pleasure clinic put on by Shawn Rooker and a Saddle Seat Equitation clinic with Kellie Budd. Both clinics gave guests the chance to ask questions and learn some fundamental teachings. “A lot of the guests that attended the open house do a lot of their own horse training, so opportunities like this help provide some thoughts and ideas of things they can work on at home,” says Kellie. “I felt like the open house was a real success,” says Shawn Rooker. “We sold some horses and got a lot of new people to come visit our facility.” Look for this to become an annual event over Martin Luther King weekend, and put it on your calendar for next year! ■

Leaders Of The Times: Monticello V

Monticello V does everything he is asked to do. Win a national championship in western pleasure junior horse? Check. Not one, but two: the U.S. and Canada. Win western pleasure open at Scottsdale? Check, twice, 2013 and 2015 (unanimous). Win in open and amateur? Check. At the 2015 Canadian Nationals, he and his owner, Carolyn Lesley, were the unanimous champions in Western Pleasure Select AATR. Wow a crowd in

Central Park? Check. September 2015, as Gold Medal winner at the Arabian U.S Open. Just about all that is left is a national championship in western pleasure open and he came very close in 2015, finishing reserve at the U.S. Nationals. He’s as genuine as his historic name (which is pronounced “Monti-chello,” as Thomas Jefferson called his home). None of this is surprising when you consider his pure-Varian pedigree ( Jullyen El Jamaal x Mosquerade V, by Huckleberry Bey). He’s bred to be beautiful, which he is, as well as talented, and to have an intelligent temperament, which he does. It is the temperament that trainer Joe Reser has found useful in developing his ability, and then in diversifying his career to include the amateur participation of Carolyn Lesley, who has owned the stallion since last summer. “Monticello is a sensitive fellow,” says Reser. “Carolyn got along with him amazingly well right from the get-go—there was an immediate bond. I just gear this horse for me and teach Carolyn how to ride him that way. He knows what I expect out of him and he does it. His disposition is second to none.” That is a trait Monticello seems to pass on to his foals. There have been only 15 of them to date, but every one, Reser reports, has reflected a sweet, want-to-please attitude—which is handy, as this year’s plans call not only for more focus on the stallion’s role in amateur, but also on his breeding career. Undeniably, Monticello’s pedigree is an asset. Reser remembers 2007, when he and his wife purchased the yearling Jullyen son during a Varian Summer Jubilee. Basically, it was because Michele fell in love with him during the Sunday mare walk— but it didn’t hurt that Bob Hart, who was walking with them,

mentioned that he had showed some of Mosquerade’s foals (sixtime national champion Magination V was one), and that all them had been great horses. He also said, “Joe, that’s a really nice colt.” “I think he can be attractive to the halter world; he is a beautiful animal,” observes Reser. “He could make some awesome halter horses that you could then turn around and ride—they’re going to have a career after halter. He’s beautiful and athletic, and he’s going to pass that on.” So far, they have found that Monticello’s purebred foals exhibit his type and physical ability, while among the Half-Arabians (mostly from Quarter Horse mares), the look is Arabian heads and necks on Quarter Horse-style bodies. “It’s an honor to be able to breed a horse like that,” Reser says. “And now Carolyn gets to ride him, love him and enjoy him, and to see all the cool attributes that we’ve seen since the beginning.” With the amateur emphasis, is Monticello V ending his open career? Not at all, Reser says, although it will be limited. There are still those open national championships. Two years ago, the stallion was third on the cards, and last year he was reserve. “I want him to be successful in the amateur division—that’s great,” Reser says. But he feels Monticello V is capable of the tri-color. “As long as he stays healthy and God’s willing, he will come back in the open. We’ll go for it.” n

Tony Ferguson Tony, your role at AHT covers a lot of bases. Please describe your typical duties for the readers. My duties range from primarily a Graphic and Interactive Designer, mixed with project management, with a bit of IT support and social media. I artistically design advertising and editorial for the magazine, websites, e-mail marketing, print and multimedia projects. I create concepts, collaborate and organize projects with clients, old and new. When did you decide to study design, and how did you make that happen? I always loved drawing and creating things. I credit my mom with my art background, she always had me doing arts and crafts growing up. My computer passion comes from my dad. His job was fixing computers, so I was exposed to them very young and quickly developed passion for technology. I decided to pursue art and computer related fields in high school. After that, I attended college for Graphic Design and Animation at The Art Institute and Academy College in Minnesota. How did you come to work at AHT? What has kept you there for the last dozen years? My first job out of collage was designing for a newspaper, The New Prague Times. I worked there several years gaining experience, but started to desire a more creative job in color! I saw a job posting, applied, and got an interview. After seeing the quality and design of the magazine using cutting edge computers, I accepted the job and the rest is history.
caring parents to start me in the right direction with a solid foundation. I think I’ve always been a positive person and conscious of other people’s feelings. I try to treat people how I want to be treated. Life is too short. Like everyone does sooner or later, I’ve lost close family members, which really makes you realize how short and precious life is. Tell us about your family. What things do you enjoy doing together? I was born and raised in Minnesota and have a sister. I met my wife, Christa, in high school and we have been married for 15 years. We have two boys, Lucas, age 12, and Marcus, age 9; and two black cats, Trick and Treat, that we got from a farm the day before Halloween. We love going to amusement parks and riding roller coasters. We like traveling and seeing new places; going on road trips where we look for new and different food. We spend our summers biking on trails, canoeing on rivers and lakes, camping with friends, going to water parks and Geo-cashing. At home we enjoy playing board games, Nintendo Wii U—especially Mario Kart—and computer games.
Many people describe you as a generous, creative and positive man. What has shaped your outlook on life? I was fortunate to have loving and

You are known in the office for your unbeatable costumes. What has been your favorite self-designed costume? This last year I went as running Forrest Gump from the movie. I found the perfect Bubba Gump Shrimp hat, a large beard and wig, a yellow t-shirt and red running shorts. Best accessory was the white Nike shoes I found at a garage sale, which was the original inspiration for the costume. My wife Christa dressed as Hippie Jenny from the movie. We like to do themes each year and have lots of fun
You are the go-to guy when it comes to getting ready for Youth Nationals and designing the yearbook cover. Where does your inspiration come from for this yearly endeavor? First step is to think about the theme and come up with some artwork and overall look. I like to find an inspiration piece and create around that. I like working on the youth pages. It is very different from the norm and the fun designs help fuel my creative mind! What are your personal interests or hobbies outside of the design world? I like new technology, reading fantasy and science fiction books, fishing trips to Canada and spending time with family. I am also a Lego Robot Coach; my boys and I build and compete. Before that, I was a Cub Scout Den Leader for many years.
What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you? Not sure if it’s the funniest thing ever, but a funny story. I was crowned Cannonball King at a campground this last summer. It all started with my family and friends enjoying the pool and having fun watching all the kids swim and competing in pool games. After kids competed, they asked for adults to try cannonball competition. I thought what the heck, I’ll do it. I obviously couldn’t see my splash, but was told it was huge! The funniest part was that I received for first place, a small card that was redeemable for one large Slushy! Give us a snapshot of yourself five years from now. How do you imagine your life will unfold? Everyone would be a little older, but I don’t imagine too many changes. I would think I would still be a graphic designer. I like what I do and where I live. Probably have a new car; I have two older vehicles right now. My oldest son will be driving ... that’s scary to think about!
If you could arrange a dinner party for yourself and five other people, living or dead, who would they be and why? That is a very hard question! At first I thought about celebrities, professional athletes and world leaders, which would be awesome, but then started thinking about family that have passed away. I would have to go that direction and choose deceased family members. My father, Mike, my father-in-law, Larry, my step father-in-law Joe, and my grandmothers, Jackie and Regina. I would love to get a second chance to talk with them all again. Losing them all was very hard, and seeing them again would be special and incredible. What four items on your “bucket list” are you most eager to check off? Sky dive, tour castles in Europe, travel into space, and solve a Rubik’s Cube!

You have won many design awards over the years. What are your three personal favorite pieces that you have designed? Very hard to pick just three. I have been at AHT for 11 years, and have designed thousands of magazine ads and editorial. I’ll pick a few of my favorite specialty projects from the last year. My first would be Dick and Lollie Ames’ Christmas card. Sound, texture, foil and a pop-up, awesome! Very challenging to design, but turned out amazing. Second would be the Youth Yearbook cover and ads. It’s always great to see my designs in the magazine, but even better when in a hard cover book. The theme was Horsin’ Around The World, so was fun to use world travel art and photos with the horses. Third would be Ames Construction’s Percheron wall calendar. I have been designing it for 6 years, and every year it’s a highlight. Larger size than standard, beautiful horses and amazing construction photos. Just a great project and very rewarding to see on the wall!

What disciplines have you shown in and are competing in now? I show in all English divisions: Equitation, Country, English and Show Hack. What is your favorite riding style? English, of course! Do you come from a long line of family involvement with the Arabian horse? Yes, my mother has been in the Arabian world for 30 years. Who is your favorite horse you have ever owned? I have a special bond with each of my horses, but SF Blonde Ambition (Blondie) is my favorite. She is incredible in

every way, from her personality and beauty, to her heart! She has never let me down—five national titles later in three years; I can’t ask for more than that.
How many horse events do you attend a year? 4-6 shows per year. What would be one thing our readers don’t know about you? I am greatly affected by and strive to help people and animals, especially those in need, whenever I can. If there is one person you could thank in this world, who would it be and why? There are a lot of people I would and should thank, but here I thank my dad, for supporting me in all that I love. How do you see your involvement in the Arabian horse industry 15 years from now? Showing, of course … breeding, and maybe even training. n
