WRITES

Good Afternoon everybody and a very warm welcome back to The Hive London for this National League fixture against Eastleigh. I wish to extend that welcome to Andy Hessenthaler, his staff, players, supporters and officials. When you’re at home, you always want to win. I’m not saying that you don’t want to win away from home, you can play well away and get creditable draws like we did at Aldershot. I’m not sure we actually warranted a win on Tuesday against Braintree. We probably did in the end, but we didn’t get it. We didn’t play well enough in the first half to get a proper grip of the game. We were a lot better in the second half and if I look at opportunities, similar to the Aldershot game, Charlee Adams had a header well saved, after the break he hit the post and the goalie made a fantastic save to tip his shot over. We’re creating chances and I’m pleased with that. It’s early in the season and we’re not as fluid as we need to be, but we have had really good patches. But, at home, you want to win every game. You want your supporters to see you win at

home, so there’s still a little bit of work to do. We won’t play a game this year that won’t be a tough test. Today is no exception. All leagues now have become tougher year on year on year. The influx of foreign players to the Premier League just pushes everybody down, that makes this league really strong. Every week that we go into a game, we’re going to be saying the same thing about ‘how tough’ it will be. For me, that’s the beauty of it. You have to prepare for every game to be tough and I love it.

I’m looking forward to today and all the tough games to come!

SKIPPER’S

NOTES

Hello everybody, welcome back to The Hive for this afternoon’s game against Eastleigh! We came away feeling frustrated on Tuesday. The way the game went, they were the much better team in the first half but we were better after the break and had the chances to win it. Sometimes, you need a little bit of luck. Over the last two games, we’ve hit the woodwork at least 5 times. We’ve been a matter of inches from getting two wins on the board. That said, the way we started the game on Tuesday wasn’t good enough and it allowed Braintree to grow a little confidence and gather momentum to grow into the game. It’s tough with whoever you play in this league, if you go a goal behind, teams will make it difficult for you. We showed good character to come back and get a goal, our first of the season. Hopefully, they will start flowing in now, but it will be a difficult test against Eastleigh

today, a very experienced side at this level. You’ve got to earn the right to win any game, whether that’s at home or away, against the bottom of the league or top. I know that you can just turn up and expect to win no matter the opposition or what the form guide tells you. We have got to remember, we’re a team that has just come down from League Two, a lot of teams will want to be raising their games against us. We go into every game fully focused on approaching it professionally and to go and win the game. We just need to show a little bit more of a ruthless streak.

Enjoy the game and get behind the lads - Come on you Bees!

INTRODUCING EASTLEIGH THE STORY OF EASTLEIGH FC SINCE ITS FOUNDATION BY DERIK BROOKS IN 1946 AS ‘SWAYTHLING ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB’ HAS BEEN ONE OF UPWARD MOBILITY. Playing home matches firstly on Southampton Common, and then at ‘Westfield’ in Swaythling, the new club were promoted into the Hampshire League in 1950 after two campaigns spent in the Southampton Senior League (West). Within another year, Athletic, (that appellation was dropped in 1973) had topped Division Three (West) and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup. By 1956, Swaythling were playing in the 1st Division of the County league. They would return to that level in 1970 as champions of Division 2. In keeping with their early progress, the club moved to a new ground at Ten Acres in 1957 – which remains home to this day. The change to their current name was made in 1980, six years before Eastleigh F.C. became founder members of the Wessex League. The club settled at that level, until a distinguished period under the management of present Sutton United boss Paul Doswell which began in 2002/2003. Eastleigh were that season’s Wessex League Champions. Twelve months later, they finished 4th in the Southern Football 11

League Division One East. The club were beneficiaries of the F.A.’s restructuring of the non-league pyramid, and were elevated to begin 2004/2005 in the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. On-pitch advancement was being matched off the field. A new stand was constructed in time for the Isthmian campaign, which the team finished with a run of 14 unbeaten matches. That was enough to earn Eastleigh a play-off berth, which they capitalised on fully. Victories over Braintree Town (2-0), and Leyton (1-0) ensured that Doswell had taken his team from Wessex League to Conference South in the space of three heady years. Development of the ground has continued, with improvements made in 2006 both to the stand opposite the main grandstand, and that behind the goal furthest from the clubhouse. Eastleigh’s present owners, Bridle Insurance, whose purchase of a majority shareholding in the club was confirmed in February 2012, have further upgrading of the ‘Silverlake Stadium’ high on their list of priorities.

OPPOSITION

Over nine years in the Conference South, Eastleigh have twice flirted with promotion to non-league’s highest tier. In 2009, under the management of former Leeds United forward Ian Baird, the Spitfires lost a play-off semi-final against Hayes & Yeading United. A 4-0 extra-time home defeat cancelled out Eastleigh’s 4-2 first-leg victory. In 2012/2013, a campaign which saw Baird replaced by current boss Richard Hill in September, the Spitfires’ second half of the season form took them from 21st to 4th place, and a play-off meeting with Dover Athletic. A 3-1 home reverse was wiped out with a 2-0 win in Kent, but, ultimately, a losing penalty shoot-out ended Eastleigh’s promotion aspirations. The intervening years brought the Spitfires’ only ever appearance in the F.A. Cup first round, and some silverware. The 2009/2010 cup adventure was ended by a last gasp goal which earned then Conference Premier team Barrow a 2-1 home win. Eastleigh’s trophy joy came in the 2011/2012

12

Hampshire Senior Cup. In a final played at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium against AFC Totton – on a night which featured the first live testing of goal-line technology – the Spitfires were 2-0 winners. Eastleigh can lay claim to their part in football history then, but they hope to make headlines all of their own in the coming years. The high ambition of all involved with the club comes at no cost to the inclusive and fan friendly atmosphere which exists at the Silverlake Stadium. That is a fact to which founder, Director, and Life President, Derik Brooks will undoubtedly testify. Eastleigh’s success didn’t stop there – promotion was gained from the Conference South in 2014, where they won the league title. The following season, the Spitfires made the play-offs, however they couldn’t get past a strong Grimsby Town outfit who went on to gain promotion. The following season saw an impressive FA Cup run, in which Eastleigh took Championship side Bolton Wanderers to a replay. The following season was the same story, with Eastleigh losing away to Championship team Brentford in the Third Round.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS BY DANIELE ACCURSO ‘A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS’ COMBINES MY TWO PASSIONS: HISTORY AND BARNET FC. I’LL BE TRAWLING THROUGH THE ARCHIVES TO FIND PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED FOR BARNET FC AND OUR VISITORS. TODAY, WE LOOK AT THOSE WHO HAVE PULLED ON THE FAMOUS BLACK ‘N’ AMBER AND BLUE STRIPS.

Sam Togwell

Graham Stack

Sam Muggleton

Togwell was often the unsung hero for Barnet and his departure was sorely felt for nearly a seasonand-a-half here at The Hive. The defensive midfielder was only signed a week before the 2014/15 season began, with Martin Allen hailing club Chairman Tony Kleanthous for acquiring the services of the experienced player. Arriving on a free after leaving Chesterfield, Togwell was a permanent name in the starting X11 alongside Curtis Weston, going on to partake in 42 league games of that title winning season. Overall, the Englishman appeared 99 times across all competitions between August 2014 and December 2016 before departing for Eastleigh. The veteran went straight into the first-team under then Eastleigh boss Martin Allen and was appointed captain of the Hampshire club within a month of signing. The current Spitfires gaffer Andy Hessenthaler released Togwell at the end of last season and he can now be found playing for Slough Town.

‘Stacky’ has had quite the footballing career; An invincible with Arsenal in 2003/04 and spells in Scotland and India make the 36-year-old a well travelled footballer. Stack left Scottish outfit Hibernian and arrived at Underhill in the summer of 2012 to join Mark Robson’s youthful side. A relegation in his first season, including a last minute penalty save which saw Barnet win their final match at Underhill, was followed by a title medal two years later in 2015. During his time at the club, the Irishman made an impressive 125 league starts whilst also coaching ‘keeper Jamie Stephens during the 2015/16 season. The Conference-winner departed the club after losing his spot to Stephens and after a short spell in India with Kerala Blasters, reunited with Martin Allen at Eastleigh in January 2017. Graham is still with our visitors and will likely start in goal. Looking to forge a career in football punditry when his playing days come to an end, Graham writes a fortnightly column in the Non-League paper and pens articles for other outlets.

The last player in this piece was another one of our Vanarama Conference winning side, Sam Muggleton. Muggleton was utilised as both a left-back and left-winger under Allen. The 22-year-old had a secret weapon which came in handy: his long-throw AKA ‘the missile’. When camped inside our final third, a throw-in by Muggleton would often release any mounting pressure and push the Bees 40-yards up the field. A somewhat marmite player among supporters, the natural left-back went on to wear the club shirt 68 times before he too was re-signed by Allen in January 2017. The Englishman within two months of joining Eastleigh was snapped up by York, making only 5 appearances between January and March of that year for our visitors. Loan spells from The Minstermen to Boston United and Scarborough Athletic followed before this summer he once again linked up with Allen and can now be found at Chesterfield.

Was it even referred to as the Silverlake Stadium at the time, I cannot recall, but the final result was that our paths wandered in different directions, dramatically changing in 2017 when Martin Allen joined the Hampshire club, prompting the Sunday Express headline “I left Barnet for more money in non-league”. Wiki lists the numerous ex-Bees who have played for both sides, largely because of Mr Allen’s brief flirtation and also describes how Sammy the Spitfire was replaced by Brooksy the Bear as the mascot, Mr Brooks having founded the Hampshire club in the 1940s. This was on wiki, therefore, it must be true.

Dan Sweeney was the Player of the Season and also collected the most improved player award. Jack Taylor was voted the best Young player, so congratulations to both men. The Lester Finch Award went to Garry Lakin, who has been providing match day Hospital Radio Barnet commentaries every year since Marconi was a lad.

Walking on the Moon Leyton Orient is the venue for the Walking Football Team a week today. Shaun Ashley Sherrick or Peter Speroni will advise you of the details, or why this in fact clashes with the Ebbsfleet game. Over the summer months, they also socialised and played some cricket.

BEN STREVENS Scorer of the Eastleigh equaliser in the above game was our former star Ben Strevens, or “the Galactico” to his former fans. He was the only player from our relegated squad of 2001, to be promoted five years later, so deserves our applause today along with the Hess, who was an equally valued player at Underhill in his day. Hard to think that Benjamin is now 38, and not the callow youth we remember.

performance, others will be fully fit soon.

Aldershot Well done to those who made the perilous and complicated train journey to Aldershot. I particularly remember the 2004 victory in Hampshire, when Simon King scored the winner, a dramatic 3-2 triumph, preferring to forget the abandoned game of seven years later when the fog influenced the final verdict. It should have been the first game as captain for Callum Reynolds, as he returned to an old club, but sadly injury prevented this. Hopefully, after this encouraging

I entertained the Rheolau Arms, Abercrave and Our Mags with a rendition of World in Motion, the New Order chart topper just before the commencement of the Panama game, but without attempting the John Barnes rap. I am reminded of a talk that Paul Fairclough gave the Underhill faithful in 2004, when he speculated that the Greek Euro triumph might influence the tactics in the subsequent season. In my lifetime, England’s two semi-finals had a common thread. As with Sir Bobby in 1990, Terry Venables left immediately after Euro 96. Gareth Southgate remains in charge of England, so can bring on the side still further. Above all, you’ve got to hold and give but do it at the right time……

And Finally... East Fife recently lost 4-5 to Forfar on penalties, thus recreating an Eric Morecambe gag.

MATCH REPORT

Barnet were left frustrated as they were held at home by Braintree Town in the second game of the season A stereotypical ‘game of two halves’ saw Barnet on the back foot in the first half. Christie Pattison has an effort blocked by Dan Sparkes before Jonathan Muleba curled an effort wide of Mark Cousins’ right-hand post. 17 minutes in and Ben Killip made a superb save in the Braintree goal to stop Charlee Adams’ flick on. Cheye Alexander raced down on goal but unselfishly offered to square it, his pass was poor however and the danger was cleared. The visitors took the lead 35 minutes in when Jack Taylor was unlucky to turn a low cross into his own net despite Cousins’ best efforts. Almost immediately after the restart, Adams

33

struck the upright from 20 yards before Della-Verde got a shot away at the other end but fired it over. Barnet equalised shortly after the hour mark when substitute Shaq Coulthirst slid home Dan Sparkes’ pin-point cross. The Bees would continue to push for a winner, Medy Elito was unlucky to see his shot deflected away from the target . Elliott Johnson had an effort sail over the crossbar before Harrison just couldn’t get on the end of Coulthirst’s excellent cross. Killip would pull off an outstanding save in the dying minutes, somehow hooking away Adams’ looping effort.

TAKING THE MIC

TESTING! TESTING! What’s involved in announcing a Barnet match?

The work often starts a few days out, with notes and scribbles about key information that will need to be transmitted on matchday, as well as specific soundbites or phrases you particularly want to employ as part of the introductions. Then you arrive at the stadium – around two hours before kick-off – and go straight into testing the sound equipment. The audio system has already been pre-tested during the week, but it’s still a routine that needs to be gone through on the match-day itself ahead of the gates opening to the public. It would be fair to say that in the “good old” days at Underhill, you never quite knew what you would get when the system was switched on. Sound levels varied considerably from one stand to another, and there were more than a few occasions when the audio totally went down on us during a stress test and we had to switch everything off and pray for success when we fired back up again. Thankfully, with the exception of one game back in 2001 when we had to quickly evacuate to the back-up mike in the Safety Control Centre, it always did. My old announcing colleague Dick Rolfe occasionally reminisced with tales from his early days when he used to play vinyl records from a

36

room underneath the stand – totally out of sight of the pitch. The view from our tannoy room – effectively adjacent to the Family Stand - was little better, and I frequently had to run to the half way line and stand directly behind the fourth official in order to clearly see the substitution and added time numbers on his board. Spotting the identity of a goal scorer at the North end of the ground wasn’t always easy, either, and could necessitate a dash to the Press Box to double-check. I guess it was all part of the fun and character of Underhill, but I can’t say I miss that particular element. The sound of the Hive is so much clearer and more evenly balanced, as well as backed by excellent sightlines. I know which one is easier to work with. I will tell you next time about the role of the Sight and Sound Control team once the initial testing is complete. In closing here, though, I must stress that not all announcers limit themselves numerically to saying “Testing…. One…. Two…. Three.” I often go: “Forty-Two, Thirty-Nine, FiftySix”. It’s a musical tip of the hat that I’ll let you Google for yourselves.

MASCOTS Today, we welcome our matchday mascot Luke Wilkinson to The Hive. We would also like to wish Luke a very Happy Birthday as he turned 12 years old on Thursday 9th August. Please give Luke a brilliant Barnet reception as he takes to the pitch before the match for a kick around and when he leads out the team for kick-off this afternoon. We hope both he and his family have a great day at The Hive celebrating his birthday and we look forward to seeing them again during the season.

If you are interested in being a match-day mascot for Barnet FC during the 2018/19 season, you can register your interest by contacting Matthew Dixon on 020-8381-3800 (Ext. 1040) / mdixon@thehivelondon.com

CHARITY COLLECTION This afternoon, our very own ‘Village’ will be collecting on behalf of Marie Curie and in memory of his late wife. Marie Curie is a charity that is very close to his heart and all the funds raised and collected will go to help support people living with a terminal illness, and their families, giving them the expert care, guidance and support they deserve at the end of their life. There are nearly 2,000 Marie Curie Nurses working across the UK, caring for people with a terminal illness in their own homes.

Truro City manager Lee Hodges has said that his sides’ main aim this season is to keep the club in the National League South. Hodges, who joined the club back in 2016, said: “We want to make sure we stay at this level at a minimum. We’ve been in and out of it for the past four or five seasons and it’s fantastic that we’re competing at this level”. The 44-year-old former midfielder guided the Cornwall side, who now play at Torquay’s Plainmoor, to the playoffs last season. He is in his second spell as manager of the club, having been player-manager there between 2010 and 2013, as well as a loan spell there from rivals Torquay United in 2009. He also scored 29 goals in 112 appearances for Barnet between 1994 and 1997.

Former Stoke City, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Birmingham City striker Adam Rooney has insisted that he did not leave Aberdeen for Salford City earlier in the summer due to money. Rooney was a Scottish Premiership runner-up and Scottish League Cup winner with Aberdeen, a Scottish First Division winner with Inverness and also won a bronze medal with Ireland at the 2005 European Youth Olympic Festival, as well as having played in the Europa League with the Dons. Although he has claimed that the deal was not done for money, the transfer fee was undisclosed and he will earn a reported £4,000 a week. “I’ve obviously got a decent deal for myself and my family but this was an opportunity that really intrigued me” he said. “I had four-and-a-half great years at Aberdeen and I loved my time there but I just felt it was possibly the right time to move on”.

Due to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar being held in November and December, it has revealed that the Championship may also get a short break during the tournament. At this years edition, no fewer than 23 players from the English Football League competed, with seven making it to the quarterfinals. EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey said: “It might be that we don’t play some Championship games during that period. We have already said we need to take a look at what it actually means for our clubs. The statistics say that the majority of [EFL] players are back available after the group stage”. Normally during mid-season international breaks, both the Premier League and Championships have a break.

Just 83 days after last seasons FA Cup final, this seasons’ edition restarts on Friday. This weekends’ Extra Preliminary Round sees several local teams competing. Cockfosters will host Newmarket Town, Hadley take on Fairfold Town of Gloucestershire, and London Lions take on Wembley. London Colney travel to Brackley Town, Harpenden Town will play Edgware Town and North Greenford United will go to Flackwell Heath. Meanwhile, Enfield 1893 travel to St. Margaretsbury on Sunday.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Neighbours Boreham Wood have this week signed two players on loan from Brentford. 20-year-old Justin Shaibu, who joined the west London side in 2016, come through the ranks at HB Koge of Denmark, having previously competed for the country at Under 17, Under 18 and Under 20 levels. The striker also played for Walsall on loan towards the end of last season. He was also voted HB Køge Talent of the Year in 2014. Also joining the side is Ellery Balcombe, an 18-year-old goalkeeper. He featured for the sides’ ‘B’ team last season as well as having also turned out for various youth sides for the Bees.

Poland defender Lukasz Piszczek has announced his retirement from international football. The 33-year-old had scored three goals for his country in his 65 appearances since making his debut in 2007. His last two appearances came in his countries’ first two group games at the World Cup in Russia. Despite winning their last game versus Japan 1-0, they finished bottom of their group. Starting out his career with Gwarek Zabrze, before moving to German side Hertha BSC in 2004. He was subsequently loaned out to Zagłębie Lubin for three consecutive seasons, which included a Polish Ekstraklasa win in 2007, scoring 21 goals in 98 appearances along the way. His time in Berlin ended after he had scored 7 goals in 87 appearances. 2010 saw him make the switch to league rivals Borussia Dortmund, where he has, to date, scored 16 goals in 298 games. With Dortmund, he picked up two Bundesliga titles, two DFB Pokal titles, two DFL Supercup titles, a Champions League runners-up medal and two Bundesliga team of the seasons.

Former Nigeria international Nwankwo Kanu has this week rallied for support from his former teammates for his testimonial match, which is due to take place here at the Hive on 30th September. The match is set to raise funds for his charity, the Kanu Heart Foundation, the KHF, which he set up in 2000, to help underprivileged children, youth and young adults in Africa with heart ailments to obtain cardiac surgeries. The charity has so far helped over 530 open heart surgeries for children since its’ creation, which he started when he overcame a heart problem which almost ended his career shortly after his gold medal win in the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. The game will see two sides made up of his former teammates compete against each other: the African All-Stars, made up of his international teammates and Premier League All-Stars, made up of teammates from club level. Some of the players to have already been confirmed to be playing are Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Teddy Sheringham, Sol Campbell, Darren Anderton, Emile Heskey, William Gallas, Emmanuel Eboue and Michael Essien.

Watford have announced that Omer Riza has joined the club in an academy coaching role. The 38-year-old will become a coach for the Under 15 and Under 16 sides. This becomes his first coaching role since he left Leyton Orient as manager last summer, being most notably remembered by the east London club for being the clubs’ manager when they got relegated from the Football League for the first time. Coming through the ranks at Arsenal, before a loan at Dutch side ADO Den Haag before a permanent transfer to West Ham United. It was at this stage in 2000 that he joined Barnet on loan, playing 10 times, scoring 4 goals. Future moves to Cambridge United, Denizlispor and Trabzonspor in Turkey, and Shrewsbury Town followed. After a short spell with Aldershot Town, he turned out for the likes of Histon, Boreham Wood, Chelmsford City and Cheshunt, before coming out of retirement to play for Newmarket Town last year.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

After just over two years in charge of the club, Blackpool manager Gary Bowyer has stepped down as manager. The 47 becomes the first manager to leave his post this season. He arrived at Bloomfield Road in June 2016 on the back of the Tangerines relegation to League 2, guiding the side to a 2-1 victory against Exeter City in the playoff final at Wembley to win the side promotion back to the third tier at the first attempt, before taking the club to a 12th place finish in League 1 last campaign. From his 115 games with the Lancashire club, he managed 42 wins, a win rate of 36.5%. Alongside this, he also took 40 draws, and 33 loses. Terry McPhillips, Bowyer’s assistant, will take charge of the club on an interim basis. In a club statement, Bowyer said: “It has been a pleasure to manage Blackpool Football Club over the past two years and there are many people I wish to express my thanks to”.

The FA have decided to dedicate England’s friendly against Switzerland on 11th September to Kick It Out. The game, due to be held at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, will be used to mark 25 years since the antidiscrimination charities’ foundation, the first game to be held in honour of the organisation. “For us to have a dedicated international as we enter our 25th anniversary season is a clear marker of how far we’ve come since Kick It Out was founded in 1993” said Kick It Out chairman Lord Herman Ouseley. “Our goal is to see all forms of discrimination being challenged at all levels of the game, so to see the England team putting the pursuit of equality and inclusion at the heart of this important friendly is a massive moment”.

POSTCARD FROM MALDON & TIPTREE After 3 long months of waiting, it was finally time to embark on a new season, this time in the National League. We had been given Aldershot away as our first game back in non-league football and as I didn’t get to visit last time we were in this league I was excited for a new away day. Due to my Dad knowing how bad the ‘M25 holiday traffic’ would be me and him travelled down the night before and stayed overnight in Hemel Hempstead. On Saturday morning we set off around 11:30am and made our way around the M25 arriving in Aldershot around 1pm. We parked in a car park close to the ground and because it was a lovely day we decided to walk up to the town to get some lunch. We trekked up and around the ground (which was literally located in a park) and were inside for about 2pm. The stadium was quite small and the seats were so cramped! The ground started filling nicely and before I knew it the teams were out and ready to go. We started the game strongly with some early chances and some positive play going forward. On 24 minutes, Harrison’s header went just wide and on 30 minutes we were given a free kick on the edge of the box that Sparkes hit beautifully but it hit the crossbar and we went into halftime somehow level with Aldershot. It was clear that this game was going to be a frustrating one! At halftime we decided to move to the terracing and it was nice to catch up with some fans I haven’t seen in a while. We started the second half in a similar way looking strong attacking and on 60 minutes we saw some familiar faces as Jack Taylor and Coulthirst came on to try and help our efforts. As the game went on we hit the crossbar again and had many, many chances that somehow Aldershot managed to keep out! On 87 minutes Robson’s header was cleared off the line and our last chance came in the 5 minutes injury time when Coulthirst hit the post. The ref blew and it finished 0-0, it just wasn’t our day. We applauded the team as they returned their appreciation too and it was nice to see ex-bee Jake Cole down our end applauding us too. We walked back to the car and set off up north. To celebrate the first game back me and Dad decided to stop off for some tea and ended up in Prezzo next to Stadium MK (an away day we were so close to having this season instead!) After a nice bit of food, we continued up the M1 which was fairly quiet for once and arrived back in Leeds around midnight. Although I can’t believe we didn’t score, it was a lovely first day back and here’s hoping for a season of success!

THE RECKLESS GUIDE TO

THE RECKLESS GUIDE TO

Harrogate Town 14 • 08 • 2018 - KICK OFF: 7:45PM

LOCATION: CNG STADIUM HARROGATE NORTH YORKSHIRE, HG2 7SA

The ground is a 20-minute walk from the station (cabs always win for me).

KEY PERSONNEL Simon Weaver is the current manager at newly promoted Town. He has been at the helm since 2009. A defender who started out as an apprentice at Sheffield Wednesday he played at a host of clubs notably Nuneaton Borough, Lincoln City, Tamworth, Kidderminster and Scarborough.

BRIEF DIRECTIONS BY ROAD A 200-mile trip awaits. The trusty A1 has always been your friend in these guides – for a straightforward drive leave the A1 at Junction 47 and get onto the A59 signposted Knaresborough. Pick up the A658 towards Harrogate. At a roundabout, take the A661 (Wetherby Road) and the ground can be found on the right. Coming off at Junction 46 looks closer but it does take you “around the houses”. Harrogate is well signposted from whichever direction you travel.

CAR PARKING No parking at the ground I’m afraid and residents parking is in operation close by. Street parking is available about a mile away and of course, the Town Centre which is a 10-minute walk.

EATING AND DRINKING LOCALLY The Social Club at the ground is called the 1919 Bar which does allow visiting fans unless segregation is in place. The closest pub to the ground is The Woodlands (110 Wetherby Road) which will serve up a half decent Steak & Chips while the Empress is a 10-minute walk away in Church Square but serves very good food. The catering inside the ground, according to my spies, is one of the best menus we will experience on our travels

courtesy of ‘Burgers & More’, a local restaurant – gourmet style burgers and pies. You will hear great words about the Wellington Burger/Pie which is a burger stuffed with blue cheese and mushrooms encrusted in pastry. Me first...

DIRECTIONS BY TRAIN A lunchtime train from Kings Cross will take around 3 hours to reach Harrogate (with a change at Leeds). Getting home after the game via this option is not possible unless you like sleeping on a bench for 5 hours, once again at Leeds. 50

THE RECKLESS GUIDE TO

GROUND DESCRIPTION

OVERNIGHT STAY FACTOR

The club has occupied the site for nearly 100 years now. The small main stand occupies half of a touchline and is just 6 rows deep. To its left is a smaller construction which was originally built for sponsors and Directors box and to its right a flat standing area. Opposite is the Wetherby Road covered terrace. The Hospital End is compact covered terrace while the Clubhouse End is just that with a token standing area in front of the Social club and Dressing Rooms. The pitch is 3G artificial. Plans are afoot for extensions to the main stand and Wetherby Terrace, a new standing area at the Hospital end and even a new clubhouse.

Now then, now then, a really lovely part of the country that attracts a high 7/10 ( mainly because getting home after the game will be a nightmare). The town is very picturesque and is only an Edwin Stein corner kick away from the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

RIVALS: Not here, this town is one of the most pleasant in the country, if you get mugged, you get a receipt for your property!

ADMISSION PRICES

OUR LAST MEETING & MEMORIES I go back a long way with my club (people keep telling me this anyway) and I reckon this is the first time we have encountered Harrogate Town FC. My only connection with the town, if you are interested of course, was visiting the Daleside Brewery in the 1980’s – when I was fit and able to do that sort of thing – Monkey Wrench and Old Legover are brews that would appeal to those of you with a taste for real ale.
