2020

When I think of Apple Hill, I remember the stories my Dad, Edio Delfino, one of the founding fathers of the Grower’s Association, would tell me about how a terrible event opened the door to the grouping of 50 farms that we all know and love today. In the late ’50s, early ’60s, El Dorado County was

covered with mostly pear trees. As a child, I remember my dad saying that a pear eaten on the east coast probably came from El Dorado County. Trains would transport thousands of tons of pears that were picked here and shipped all over America. In the early ’60s, a terrible disease came in called Pear Decline. In a matter of a few months, hundreds of acres of Pears were destroyed. An orchard could look great during the day and the next morning show major damage. As hard as they tried, the farmers couldn’t stop the disease from wiping out their pear trees. They needed to do something fast to keep their farms afloat and avoid development of their beautiful agricultural land. Many farmers banded together and tried to think of something that would be sustainable while also honoring their rural atmosphere. They found out about a place down south called Oak Glenn. My dad, Edio, and Gene Bolster, also a founding member of the Association, drove down to see how Oak Glenn was running their farms while also inviting visitors to their roadside farm stands. They loved how each farm was unique and individual while also banding together and marketing themselves as a whole. It was a special community of farmers and our founders wanted that for El Dorado County. In 1964, in the midst of a terrible time for farmers in El Dorado County, Apple Hill was born. We now have over 50 farms that include stone fruit, berries, lavender, wine, and, of course, apples. Our farms are truly a year round destination and agriculture is thriving in our area. Come enjoy, big or small, the 50+ farms of Apple Hill. We will embrace you as a friend and offer you fruit fresh from our farms. Chris Delfino Apple Hill Growers President

COMMUNITY

The Apple Hill Growers and our individual ranch members believe in giving back to our local community. We focus on the needs of youth in our area by providing positive experiences and resources that cultivate a connection between agriculture, food, and natural resources. Here are just a few of our community projects and partners: Norma Brubaker Scholarships – Since 1986 Apple Hill Growers have awarded more than 100 scholarships through the Norma Brubaker Scholarship program. Named for the First Secretary of the Apple Hill Growers. The scholarship is funded by the Apple Hill Growers and the Brubaker family. El Dorado County Ag in the Classroom – This local, grassroots, charitable organization provides quality agriculture-related educational resources, programs, and training opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of agriculture in our lives. Farm Day – These are fun, hands-on field trips where lessons of agriculture and its role in our everyday lives, our county, and its economy are taught to 3rd graders in the context of local farms, ranches, forests, and watersheds. Visit agintheclass-edc.org/programs-resources/farm-day/ for more information. Apple Hill Harvest Run – One of the oldest runs in California: the 41st Annual Apple Hill Harvest Run, will be held on the morning of Sunday, November 15, 2020. All proceeds of the run directly benefit the students of Camino Union School District. Since 1996, as beneficiary, Camino School has received more than $200,000 from the run.
