theinterview ▼ HAUSMANN, Continued from Page 6 the satisfaction far outweighs anything negative. There have been disappointments, such as the recent decision by the board to terminate the Cauley Creek water reuse contract in North Fulton. But there have been plenty of successes resulting in significant changes to the court system, the election board and the process for hiring civil servants in Fulton County. We are constantly dealing with declining revenues in Fulton, yet we still managed to get funding for a new senior center that opened recently in Milton, and three new libraries are currently under construction in North Fulton.

What do you do to shake off stress at the end of the day? I enjoy gardening, reading, riding my bike and spending time at Lake Lanier. But my favorite thing is playing with my two grandchildren. Any long-term plans to pursue a position in state government? People ask me that all the time, and it’s very flattering. But I’m focused right now on Fulton County. There’s so much going on and so many changes and possibilities ahead for the future. Do you have advice for other women who are considering running for public office? I think women are natural leaders. No offense to the men out there, but women are the backbone of most families. Both at home and in their work life, women are natural project managers and volunteers, and you can turn those skills into any sort of public service. Most women have the makeup in them already to hold public office – they just need to build their confidence level. Follow your heart and your instincts, do what you are good at and become involved with issues and organizations that interest you. These days, there really is a need for good, level-headed women to take an active role in their community and I welcome them to come on. ■

Legislation was passed this year to create a new commission district for North Fulton, giving the area a second vote at the table. Ga. 400 will be the dividing line between the new eastern and western districts. Do you plan to run for the eastern district in 2014? The new commission district is long overdue and I’m glad that it’s going to happen. As for 2014, I haven’t made an official announcement, but yes, I am planning to run. I feel like we have such exciting opportunities with this new commission and I hope to be a part of it. I’m starting to see a lot of interest in the new district and have been contacted by many community members who are looking at it, and I think that’s fabulous. I have no way of knowing who will hold

that seat – their political party, age or gender. But I do know that they will have the perspective of North Fulton and that’s what we need.

At the end of the day, family still comes first. Liz Hausmann proudly shows a photo of her two grandchildren, the youngest born earlier this summer.
