Dearvaluedpartners,

2022 was the year of the “great return” to normal operations for Business Career Servicesandhighereducationasawhole.However,withthatreturnwehavetaken great care to embrace the lessons we learned over the last two years. Adoption of new practices are underway that weave hybrid approaches for our students, industrypartnersandteam.Thecouplingofinnovationandcareprovidesaholistic approachofourservicesthatstrivestoseekmaximumpositivesocietalimpact.

With those intentions in mind, Business Career Services assessed our mission, vision and values to ensure it truly mirrors our desire to serve with excellence with the whole picture in focus. Our team worked tirelessly to finetune a roadmap that servesasashepherd’slanternforourfuturebusinessleaders.Withyourinvaluable support we can translate ideas to measurable actions. The annual report reflects our mission in action over the past year. We hope you see that community is an emerging theme that continues to grow in strength and clarity as doors and windows continue to open with the great return. CAREER COACHING

Undergraduate and graduate students from all business majors received career coaching in resume and cover letter development, interview skills, job and internship search strategies, salary negotiation, and career exploration

A new initiative in Business Career Services is to offer FOCUS 2 and MBTI self-assessment inventories to students who are unclear about their career plans This has resulted in offering more comprehensive career decision making and planning services to students

summer of 2022, learning objectives utcomes for BUS 2001 were revised to support the Walker College of BusinessStrategicPlan Inthisnewstrategic plan, the WCOB is placing strong emphasis on internships and experiential learning The BUS2001courseaimstosupportourgoalof increasing internship participation by catering assignments and exercises to guide students to create all of the materials neededtoapplyforaninternship,searchfor an internship, and complete a mock interviewforaninternship.

Business Career Services now offers Quinncia, an applicant tracking system (ATS) that provides industry-based feedback on resumes for WCOB students BUS 2001's resume assignment helps students begintheircareers,andQuinnciaofferscateredandinstantfeedbacktomeetemployerpreferencesand ATS requirements This saves time for instructors to then provide personalized support to students Quinnciaisavailabletostudentsuntilgraduationforongoingsupportinjobandinternshipapplications.

Women of Walker

Women of Walker is a student program that helps female business majors at Appalachian State University develop professionally and as leaders It offers experiential workshops led by industryprofessionalsandcareerexperts Theprogramhasserved200womensince2014and aims to increase female representation in the business school. The 15-week program hosts a maximum of 30 members annually and is open to intended and/or matriculated business majors who maintain a satisfactory academic standing. Members are selected based on recommendationsandfactorsthatmaydefinethemastraditionallyunder-represented

CAREERFAIRS

Each academic year, two multiday signature events are held: Walker Business Connections in the fall and Walker SpringConnectinthespring Hybridprogrammingprovidedemployersandstudentswithnumerousopportunitiesto connect virtually and in-person through virtual practice interviews, networking socials, virtual and in-person career fairs, and on-campus interviews. Despite the pandemic, students explored potential jobs and internships and connectedwithemployers.

Business Career Services and the Boone Chamber of Commerce partnered this year through Watauga Women in Leadership (WWIL) WWILempowerswomeninbusinessandleadershipthroughprofessional development events that include networking and educational speakers. Business Career Services played an active role in designing and executing a professional development lineup for local female business leaders, including a Clifton Strengths workshop led by career coach Maureen Cathey This community partnership aims to support student and local business engagement while providing professional developmentopportunitiestoallagesandindustriesintheregion

WATAUGA HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SYMPOSIUM

Watauga High School hosted a day-long event for seniors with a career and college expo, alumni panel, stress management session, and speed interviewing workshop Interviewers from Business Career Services and Career Development Center provided practice questions and feedback, and the speed interviewing session was highly rated by surveyed students.
