Signature Scholarship

Chancellor’s Scholarship

and prestigious merit-based scholarship at App State.

Chancellor’s Scholars are provided with full institutional costs, including tuition and fees, room and board, and book rental, plus study abroad opportunities, numerous classroom and experiential research opportunities and academic mentoring in the living-learning community of the Honors College.

2022-23 Chancellor’s Scholar

Emerson Phillips, Cary, NC History/Social Studies Education Major

Emerson is excited about the "strong and vibrant sense of community in the Honors College," and the "smaller, discussion-based Honors seminars that let her learn from other students' thinking, perspectives, and experiences."

While a student at Cary High School, Emerson served as vice president of the Executive Student Council and was an executive officer of the school’s National Honor Society chapter, Key Club and Environmental Club. She was also a member of the color guard and varsity winter guard, as well as the debate team.

Those chosen must have also applied and been accepted to the Honors College. Students selected for interviews will be notified in early January.

Diversity ScholarsProgram

to students who have demonstrated leadership potential, academic excellence, a willingness to create positive change and a commitment to the principles of diversity. The program brings students together from different cultures and backgrounds and provides them the opportunity to assist with campus events and help facilitate conversations around race, equality and equity.

The scholarship is awarded to 10 students each year and includes in-state tuition and fees, leadership development workshops, mentorship opportunities, service-learning and international experiences.

Melissa Leite Jeffris, Brasília, Brazil

Psychology-Human Services Major

When researching schools, Melissa found that App State embodies her two most sought-after characteristics a well-established university that provides numerous study abroad, research and internship opportunities and one with a tight-knit community, “where people truly care for one another,” she said.

As a high school student, Melissa was a member of the Student Government Association, National Honor Society, International Thespian Society, Red Cross Club and Environmental and Recycling Club. She also participated in the school’s theater and dance productions.

Signature Scholarship

Willie C. FlemingScholarship

The Dr. Willie C. Fleming Scholarship is designed to support students from underrepresented populations, with selection based on their desire to promote cultural diversity.

The scholarship is awarded to 10 students each year and includes in-state tuition and fees, mentorship by alumni, the opportunity to participate in inclusivity-focused events, and networking and team building within each cohort of recipients.

Academic excellence is also a key qualifier for the applicants, and as members of the App State Community, they are called on to speak publicly and assume the responsibility of leadership, scholarship and community involvement.

2022-23 Fleming Scholar David Itson, Gastonia, NC Accounting Major

After earning his App State degree, David aims to pursue a master’s degree in accountancy and then become a certified public accountant. The Fleming Scholarship is “forming the first steps for that plan,” he said.

His decision to attend App State “happened so organically,” shared David, who added that he plans to use the education and skills he gains at App State and beyond to “embrace entrepreneurship fully” and to help others.

"For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to help people in need,” he said.

As a high school student, David was a member of Charlotte’s Young Black Leadership Alliance and served as vice president of communications for his school’s National Technical Honor Society chapter. Additionally, he provided math tutoring services for middle school students.

Alumni Memorial Scholarship

$4,000 each year for up to 4 consecutive years (8 semesters)

The Appalachian Alumni Memorial Scholarship is awarded to children of App State Alumni who have demonstrated leadership potential, academic excellence and participation in school and community activities. 5 recipients are awarded each year.

New River Light & Power Scholarship

$2,000-$4,000 each year for up to 4 consecutive years (8 semesters)

App State’s electric utility, New River Light and Power, provides power to the university and the surrounding Town of Boone. The utility is a not-for-profit that generates scholarship revenue for App State students.

Scholarships are awarded to students from Watauga County who have been accepted to App State. Six recipients are awarded each year.

Murray FamilyACCESS Scholarship Program

App State is committed to making higher education affordable for every North Carolina student. The Appalachian Commitment to a College Education for Student Success (ACCESS) Scholarship Program ensures 50 students from low-income families in North Carolina can attend App State debt-free.

Full institutional costs covered for up to 8 semesters, including tuition and fees, room and board and textbook rental

Beaver Scholars Program

$10,000 for up to 8 semesters

The Beaver Scholars program is the premier scholarship program for the Beaver College of Health Sciences. You may qualify for this scholarship if you are a high-achieving student committed to a career in the health sciences and in direct patient care environments.

“I am a proud Beaver Scholar, and while the monetary value of my scholarship is undeniably important, its impact on my life goes far deeper than finances. This support has changed the course of my life as I work toward my goal of becoming an audiologist. More importantly, it has allowed me to help countless other Mountaineers.”

Reich College of Education Signature Scholarship for ACES

From $500 to $5,000

The Reich College of Education offers scholarships to incoming first-year teacher education majors. If selected, you will be required to participate in the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES) Residential Learning Community a 4-year scholar program for future teachers that focuses on mentoring, leadership, service and professional development.

Walker College of Business Scholarships

From $500 to $5,000

The Walker College of Business, consistently named one of "The Best Business Schools" by The Princeton Review, offers a variety of scholarships to incoming first-year students pursuing a major within the college.

Hayes School of Music Scholarships

From $500 to $10,000

At the time of their audition for the Hayes School of Music, prospective music students are extended scholarship consideration, based on their audition and submission of required audition materials. The application for signature scholarships and selective academic programs is not required to be considered for Hayes School of Music Scholarships.

Selective Academic Programs

These programs offer students one-of-a-kind opportunities for enriched academic, social, living and leadership experiences.

Students with strong academic records often engage in Selective Academic Programs. Participation is frequently paired with merit-based scholarships, but scholarships are not required to take part in these programs.

The Honors College

The Honors College features small, interdisciplinary seminars taught by inspired faculty; superb academic and career mentoring; the chance to live and grow in the Honors and Engagement Community of Cone, Summit and Appalachian halls; and the opportunity, as an Honors senior, to complete a major research or creative project guided by a faculty mentor.

Watauga Residential College

Watauga Residential College provides an environment for App State’s most creative students to explore their passions both in and out of the classroom. Students reside in the Living Learning Center, a close-knit residential community within the college.

The college’s specialized academic program of discussionbased seminars provides an opportunity for students to become engaged in learning at a deep level through class discussions and research projects.

Appalachian Community of Education Scholars

The Reich College of Education’s Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES) program seeks to develop teacher leaders who will positively impact the profession through their skills in critical thinking, collaboration, reflective practice and advocacy for equity and inclusion.

If selected, students will be active participants and leaders within the Appalachian Educators Club and Reich College of Education, in addition to a wide variety of campus activities. In the 4-year program, students reside together in the ACES Residential Learning Community during their first year. Programming focuses on mentoring, service and professional development.

We are given so many opportunities that push and encourage members to reach further than the standard education expectations. I'm excited to continue in this program with so many other inspiring education majors, and to become the teacher I want to be."
