Signature Scholarship
Chancellor’s Scholarship
The Chancellor’s Scholarship is the most academically competitive merit-based scholarship at App State, designed for students with ambitious academic goals. Chancellor’s Scholars are provided with full institutional costs, including tuition and fees, room and board, and book rental, plus study abroad opportunities, numerous classroom and experiential research opportunities and academic mentoring in the living–learning community of the Honors College. 10 recipients are awarded each year. 2021-22 Chancellor’s Scholar Stephen Smith, Eastover, NC When considering where to go to college, Smith said he found the Appalachian Community to be dynamic, inclusive and well rounded. “It provides a diverse learning environment and multitudes of different programs, clubs and degrees,” said Smith, who plans to study psychology with a concentration in health studies. “The Chancellor’s Scholarship enables me to pursue my educational goals by giving me access to more resources, help and connections — including opportunities for one-on-one research with professors and studying abroad. It provides financial liberty and allows me to obtain the best education App State has to offer,” Smith said. Smith graduated from Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, where he was captain of the Science Olympiad Varsity Team, a freshman mentor and a member of the All-State Chorus, Beta Club and Cumberland County Academy of Scholars. He also started a student life podcast to boost student morale during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diversity Scholars Signature Scholarship
Program
The Diversity Scholars Program Scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated leadership potential, academic excellence, a willingness to create positive change and a commitment to the principles of diversity. The program brings students together from different cultures and backgrounds and provides them the opportunity to assist with campus events and help facilitate conversations around race, equality and equity. The scholarship is awarded to 10 students each year and includes in-state tuition and fees, leadership development workshops, mentorship opportunities, service-learning and international experiences.
Full in-state tuition and fees covered for up to 8 semesters
2021-22 Diversity Scholar Anna MunAmee Palmer, Charlotte, NC Anna MunAmee Palmer said she chose App State because of App State’s welcoming and inclusive student atmosphere and its focus on sustainability on campus. A graduate of the Northwest School of the Arts, Palmer said she is leaning toward majoring in music therapy or psychology at App State. “Regardless of what career I pursue, I will always strive to create and support an inclusive community, and this scholarship will equip me with the skills I need to accomplish this goal,” she said. As a high school student, Palmer was president of her school’s Special Olympics Club and vice president of Student Government. She was a member of Student Leadership, the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.

Signature Scholarship
Willie C. Fleming Scholarship
The Dr. Willie C. Fleming Scholarship is designed to support students from underrepresented populations, with selection based on their desire to promote cultural diversity. The scholarship is awarded to 10 students each year and includes in-state tuition and fees, mentorship by alumni, the opportunity to participate in inclusivity-focused events, and networking and team building within each cohort of recipients. Academic excellence is also a key qualifier for the applicants, and as members of the Appalachian Community, they are called on to speak publicly and assume the responsibility of leadership, scholarship and community involvement. Full in-state tuition and fees covered for up to 8 semesters 2021-22 Fleming Scholar Victoria Smith, Raleigh, NC With an eye on attending medical school in the future, Smith plans to major in biology-cellular/molecular biology at App State, with minors in political science and sociology. On choosing App State, Smith said, “I wanted to be at a school that would challenge my way of thinking while also providing me with a phenomenal education and support system.” Smith is a graduate of William G. Enloe High School’s Medical BioScience Academy, a learning community designed to provide academic foundations and skills for students planning careers in health care. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Wake County Black Student Coalition and the school’s Black Student Union. In her senior year she was captain of her school’s varsity volleyball team and editor-in-chief of the yearbook staff.

The Appalachian Commitment to a College Education for Student Success (ACCESS) Scholarship Program ensures 50 students from low-income families in North Carolina can attend App State debt-free.

Appalachian Excellence Scholarship
Appalachian Excellence Scholarships (AES) are awarded to top first-year students with a strong academic record. You are automatically considered for this program if you meet the application deadlines.

Each academic college offers scholarships for incoming students who have identified their major or future career path. These scholarships include mentorship, research opportunities and select opportunities for experiential learning.
Beaver Scholars Program
$10,000 for up to 8 semesters
The Beaver Scholars program is the premier scholarship program for the Beaver College of Health Sciences. You may qualify for this scholarship if you are a high-achieving student committed to a career in the health sciences and in direct patient care environments.

Hayes School of Music Scholarships From $500 to $10,000
At the time of their audition for the Hayes School of Music, prospective music students are extended scholarship consideration, based on their audition and submission of required audition materials.
Reich College of Education Signature Scholarship for ACES From $500 to $5,000
The Reich College of Education offers scholarships to incoming first-year teacher education majors. If selected, you will be required to participate in the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES) Residential Learning Community – a 4-year scholar program for future teachers that focuses on mentoring, leadership, service and professional development.
Walker College of Business Scholarships From $500 to $5,000
The Walker College of Business offers a variety of scholarships to incoming first-year students pursuing a major within the Walker College of Business.

Selective Academic Programs These programs offer students one-of-a-kind opportunities for enriched academic, social, living and leadership experiences.
The Honors College The Honors College features small, interdisciplinary seminars taught by inspired faculty; superb academic and career mentoring; the chance to live and grow in the Honors and Engagement Community of Cone, Summit, and Appalachian halls; and the opportunity, as an Honors senior, to complete a major research or creative project guided by a faculty mentor.

Watauga Residential College App State’s only residential college provides an environment for App State’s most creative students to explore their passions both in and out of the classroom. Students reside in the Living Learning Center, a close-knit residential community. The Watauga Residential College’s specialized academic program of discussion-based seminars provides an opportunity for students to become engaged in learning at a deep level through class discussions and research projects.
