Access Scholarship Program

Appalachian is committed to making higher education affordable for every North Carolina student. The Appalachian Commitment to a College Education for Student Success (ACCESS) Scholarship Program ensures 50 students from low-income families in North Carolina can attend Appalachian debt-free.

Appalachian Excellence Scholarship

The Appalachian Excellence Scholarships (AES) are awarded to top first-year students with a strong academic record. You are automatically considered for this program if you meet the deadlines.

Chancellor’s

Scholarship

The Chancellor’s Scholarship is the most academically competitive merit-based scholarship at Appalachian, designed for students with ambitious academic goals. Chancellor’s Scholars are provided with full institutional costs, including tuition and fees, room and board, and book rental, plus study abroad opportunities, numerous classroom and experiential research opportunities and academic mentoring in the living–learning community of the Honors College. 10 recipients are awarded each year.

2020-21 Chancellor Scholar Matthew Mair, Charlotte, NC Mair is a legacy student – both his mother and uncle graduated from Appalachian. He plans to major in political science with a concentration in international and comparative politics. “I know that the resources and guidance provided by the Honors College and other Chancellor’s Scholars will provide an excellent base for any type of crossdiscipline learning,” he said. Mair was salutatorian of his senior class at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte and served as president of the school’s Chamber Choir. He was also a cast member in and ensemble captain for the school’s production of the musical RENT and a member of the Charlotte Jr. Soccer League. He is a graduate of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.

Diversity Scholars Program The Diversity Scholars Program scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated leadership potential, academic excellence, a willingness to create positive change and a commitment to the principles of diversity. The program brings students together from different cultures and backgrounds and provides them the opportunity to assist with campus events and help facilitate conversations around race, equality and equity. The scholarship is awarded to 10 students each year and includes in-state tuition and fees, leadership development workshops, mentorship opportunities, service-learning and international experiences.

2020-21 Diversity Scholar Bianca Mejia-Hernandez, Hickory, NC Mejia-Hernandez, of Hickory, said she chose Appalachian for its strong sense of community, along with its campus activities and clubs that allow students to get involved. At Fred T. Foard High School in Newton, Mejia-Hernandez was a member of the school’s Beta Club and its National Technical Honors Society and National Society of High School Scholars chapters. As a senior, she participated in the High School Scholars Academy at Lenoir-Rhyne University, which provides high school students a more advanced and collegiate academic experience during their senior year.

Willie C. Fleming Scholarship

The Dr. Willie C. Fleming Scholarship is designed to support students from underrepresented populations, with selection based on their desire to promote cultural diversity. In addition to covering full in-state tuition and fees, the scholarship provides mentorship by alumni, the opportunity to participate in inclusivity-focused events, and networking and team building within each cohort of recipients. Academic excellence is also a key qualifier for the applicants, and as members of the Appalachian Community, they are called on to speak publicly and assume the responsibility of leadership, scholarship and community involvement. Full in-state tuition and fees covered for up to 8 semesters 2020-21 Fleming Scholar Gracie Staser, Apex, NC

Deadlines:

Staser plans to double major in political science – pre-professional legal studies and psychology – social science. “As a woman of color, I have always been interested in history and how the past affects society today,” she said. “As a Flemings Scholar, I will have faculty mentors who will guide me in ways to best effect social change.” As a senior at Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, Staser served as president of the school’s Mock Trial Team and president and founder of its African American Student Association. She was the keynote speaker for the school’s Youth Thrive event focused on mental health advocacy for minority youth and a senior leader for the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Each academic college offers scholarships for incoming students who have identified your major or future career path, which include mentorship, research opportunities and select opportunities for experiential learning.

Beaver Scholars Program

$10,000 for up to 8 semesters

The Beaver Scholars program is the premier scholarship program for the Beaver College of Health Sciences. You may qualify for this scholarship if you are a high-achieving student committed to a career in the health sciences and in direct patient care environments.

Hayes School of Music Scholarships From $500 to $10,000

At the time of your audition for the Hayes School of Music, prospective music students are extended scholarship consideration, based on your audition and submission of required audition materials.

Reich College of Education Signature Scholarship for ACES From $500 to $5,000

The Reich College of Education offers scholarships to incoming first-year teacher education majors. If selected, you will be required to participate in the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES) Residential Learning Community, a 4-year scholar program for future teachers that focuses on mentoring, leadership, service and professional development.

Walker College of Business Scholarships From $500 to $5,000

The Walker College of Business offers a variety of scholarships to incoming first-year students pursuing a major within the Walker College of Business.

The

Honors College

The Honors College at Appalachian offers enriched academic, social, and leadership experiences for highachieving and high-potential students. The Honors College features small, interdisciplinary seminars taught by inspired faculty; superb academic and career mentoring; the chance to live and grow in the Honors and Engagement Community of Cone, Summit, and Appalachian halls; and the opportunity, as an Honors senior, to complete a major research or creative project guided by a faculty mentor.

Watauga Residential College Appalachian’s only residential college provides an environment for Appalachian’s most creative students to explore their passions both in and out of the classroom. Students reside in the Living Learning Center, a close-knit residential community. The Watauga Residential College’s specialized academic program of discussion-based seminars provides an unusual opportunity for students to become engaged in learning at a deep level through class discussions and research projects.
