Session 1:

Mr. Mommaas will present an introductory lecture entitled ‘The History of American Jazz; the Perspective of a Jazz Musician.’

Mr. Mommaas will present a lecture that provides an overview of jazz today and explores the organization of sound. The lecture will focus on concepts of musical form as expressed through jazz; and compare them with form in story, speech, art, and life.

10:00-11:00 Lecture

The lecture will provide an overview of jazz from its origins to the present and its influence on American society. Special attention will be given to pivotal figures in the history of American jazz such as Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Lennie Tristano, Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman, David Liebman, Richie Beirach and Steve Coleman.

A perspective will be presented from an artist’s point of view; addressing new opportunities and challenges influenced by the social, cultural, and economic environment of the present day. Participants are encouraged to participate in this dialogue. Timeline exercise.

Session 2:

Mr. Mommaas will present an introductory seminar focusing on the basic elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm and form) and how to listen to jazz. All participants will participate.

12:45:-13:45

LUNCH BREAK

Listen, listen; listen more, listen deeper. Mr. Mommaas will lead an interactive workshop designed to sharpen listening skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and intelligently. The four elements discussed as basic elements (melody, harmony, rhythm, and form) will be addressed from an improvisational perspective. All participants will be involved on their instrument.


Session 3: 13:45-14:45 Listening

Guided and directed by Mr. Mommaas, participants will consider representative instrumental and vocal jazz recordings from the past hundred years. After listening to this wide variety of recorded jazz performances, participants will analyze and discuss the experience..

Session 4: 15:00-16:30 Performance

Mr. Mommaas will lead a workshop that involves all participants. The focus will be on improvisational and compositional techniques developed up to the 1960’s. Compositions will be brought in by Mr. Mommaas to demonstrate the elements that where typical for that time period and will be played by the participants. The compositions will be placed in a cultural context and their influence on American Culture will be closely examined. The group will join together in playing music and finding out about the art of improvisation.

Guided and directed by Mr. Mommaas, participants will consider a selection – made by the Mr. Mommaas – of jazz recordings that focuses on how jazz music is brought to life, and how it evolved through the years. Mr. Mommaas will provide insights into the artists’ lives through interpretations of their musical achievements and developments.

Mr. Mommaas will lead a workshop that involves all participants. The focus will be on improvisational and compositional techniques developed from the 1960’s to present time. Mr. Mommaas will bring in compositions to showcase how other cultures influenced the language of jazz and improvisation. With the guidance of Mr. Mommaas, participants will attempt to navigate these compositions on their instrument. FAREWELL RECEPTION: Presentation of certificates and exchange of contact details.
