In 1968, American artist JOHN BALDESSARI was establishing Terms most useful in describing creative works of art, capturing with acrylic paint on canvas the best fit words that, according to him, explained such a practice in the 20th century. He himself, however, did not come up with them nor did he paint them: he was actually bounded to look through art books which actions were the most frequently employed. Afterwards, he dictated those actions to a poster artist who then affixed those verbs to the canvas like an alternative version of art history. Action was perhaps the only certainty that art had brought forth throughout the unfolding of that century. Architecture could be explained by similar means, through the actions that appeal beyond intent and rhetoric. An architectural project can be presented as a catalogue of actions. Having been established in a specific place, a set of actions triggers another set of actions, in part due to the nature of the inhabitants. Like a form of Newton’s law in motion, the actions set off by architecture evoke citizen feedback.

1968 el artista norteamericano JOHN BALDESSARI establecía sus Términos más utilizados para definir trabajos creativos en el arte, plasmando con pintura acrílica sobre un lienzo las que, según él, eran las palabras capaces de explicar esta práctica en el siglo XX. En realidad él no las pensó, ni siquiera las pintó, se limitó a buscar en libros de arte cuáles eran las acciones más repetidas y, a continuación, se las dictó a un cartelista que fijó en la tela aquellos verbos, como una versión alternativa de la historia del arte; pura acción, acaso la única certeza que el arte había producido en el devenir de ese siglo. La arquitectura podría ser explicada de un modo parecido, a través de las acciones que convoca, más allá de intenciones o retóricas. Un proyecto de arquitectura puede enunciarse como un catálogo de acciones, sucesión de actuaciones establecidas en un lugar concreto que desencadena otra serie de actos por parte de los habitantes; una suerte de ley de Newton por la que las acciones desplegadas por la arquitectura conllevan reacciones ciudadanas.

When the architects undertook work on this dwelling from the postwar period, when it was a common practise in Japan to imitate Western architecture, they discovered that the original timber structure of the gable roof, typical in English houses, had been reinforced using braces and steel girders in order to avoid having to insert more columns into the floor plan. This discovery led them to partially remove the false ceilings so as to leave the original structure exposed, highlighting the metal reinforcements by painting them red.

Al intervenir sobre esta vivienda del periodo de imitación occidental, propio de la posguerra japonesa, los autores descubrieron que la estructura original de madera a dos aguas, típica de las viviendas inglesas, había sido reforzada con tirantes y vigas de acero para evitar la colocación de más soportes en la planta. Dicho descubrimiento les llevó a eliminar parcialmente los falsos techos para dejar expuesta la estructura original, destacando los refuerzos metálicos mediante su lacado en color rojo.
