Chicago’s True Nature: The Forest Preserves of Cook County
W
oven within and around Cook County stands a vibrantly unique world-class treasure: the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Nearly 70,000 acres of ancient prairies, pristine wetlands, marshes, and forest provide residents and visitors a wealth of environmental, recreational, and educational opportunities. There’s even a 12,000-year-old canyon. Like many natural wonders, the Cook County Forest Preserves are “hidden in plain sight.” Many are unaware of its vast biodiversity; others only know it for its picnic sites and bike trails. Chicago’s True Nature: The Forest Preserves of Cook County, a one-hour documentary produced by WYCC PBS Chicago and Juneteenth Productions, explores the vastness of this natural wonderland through the eyes and experiences of the people

who take care of it and the people who enjoy it. The program premieres on Sunday, May 15 at 7 p.m., with encore presentations on Monday, May 16 at 9 p.m., Saturday, May 21 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, May 22 at 4 p.m. This abundant wilderness didn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of the extraordinary vision and hard work of two architects, Dwight Perkins and Jens Jensen, at the beginning of the 20th century. Over 100 years later, the ongoing commitment by Forest Preserve District management to provide Cook County residents “open spaces” has led to the reopening of campgrounds, extension of restoration efforts, flood and disease control management, and much more. Chicago’s True Nature: The Forest Preserves of Cook County takes a look at the known—and little-known—benefits and beauty of Chicagoland’s publicly owned green spaces.

A Q&A with Director Ethan Bensinger WYCC PBS Chicago will be airing Refuge: Stories from the Selfhelp Home on Wednesday, May 4 at 7 p.m. as part of Holocaust Remembrance Day. Ethan Bensinger, the director of this moving documentary, spoke to us about how the film came to be and what he hopes viewers will learn. What were the reasons for creating this documentary? The main reason was to create a documentary that for the first time brings together the various experiences of the Central European Jewish community during World War II: the Jews of Austria, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. Most documentaries and films that we see focus on the experiences of the Eastern European Jewish community, while experiences of the Central European community were very distinct. For example, some were able to go to Shanghai, where 17,000 Jews were admitted. Or the Kindertransport, which was a unique experience for children from Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Austria. So, these are stories that we know bits and pieces of, but don’t know well enough. For that reason, I decided to interview six individuals at the Selfhelp Home in Chicago. When and how did you first learn about Selfhelp? My parents were refugees themselves from Nazi Germany and my mother started working at Selfhelp in the late ’60s as an occupational therapist. Then my grandmother moved in as a resident. She too was a refugee from Nazi Germany. Then my mother also became a resident. I started to get to know some of the friends that they made and started to hear some of these stories. I grew up as a refugee child myself, knowing a lot about the Holocaust, and I thought I knew everything there was to know until I started to hear the stories from the people at Selfhelp. I decided that we really needed to memorialize these stories because these people are the final generation. These are the last eyewitnesses to the atrocities of the Nazi regime. How willing were the participants to share their stories? Most of these survivors of concentration camps and experiences of Nazi Germany were unwilling in their younger years to talk about what they went through. It was really just too painful and these experiences too raw for people to talk about them when they were younger. On the other hand, when I came on the scene, these people now in their very golden years realized that if they don’t tell their stories now, these stories will be lost. They were all very willing to talk to me, to sit in front of a camera.
This was an emotional, traumatic experience for many of these people. That’s one of the reasons why it took us so long to make this movie, because we would have to take breaks. They would break down during the course of their storytelling and we would have to stop, sometimes for days or a couple of weeks, until they could compose themselves. But yes, they were very, very willing, knowing that they were the ones with the key, that they were the last ones who could really, honestly tell the public the experiences that they witnessed firsthand. How much of the film is about the past, how much is about the present, and how much is about the future? Certainly it’s meant to be a historical document which we use as a teaching tool at schools to teach the lessons of the past. I think hearing from these people, what they went through in a totalitarian regime, is a very, very important lesson to be learned. On the other hand, the documentary shows how welladjusted these individuals are in their current environment. It shows their strength of character, it shows their ability to adapt, and so it’s also a very hopeful documentary. It does leave the viewer with a question as to what will happen to Selfhelp once this generation has passed. Selfhelp as a home will continue, not as a refuge for Holocaust survivors but as a home for the general elderly Jewish community in Chicago. What do you hope viewers take away from the documentary? It needs to be a learning experience. They need to take away the fact that name-calling, graffiti, bullying, can start at a certain level and can grow into an event that culminated in the Holocaust. They can also take away the strength of human character and how individuals are able to survive tremendous trauma, make successful lives for themselves, and can pass on their own legacies to young people.

Chinese Couplets (airing Saturday, May 14 at 6 p.m.) is part memoir, part history, and part investigation. The filmmaker searches for answers about her mother’s emigration during the Chinese Exclusion era and reveals the often painful price paid. ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
W.S. Merwin
William Stanley Merwin was born on September 30, 1927, in New York City. He grew up in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania and attended Princeton University. After college, he spent some time in Europe and did work translating poetry. His first poem collection, A Mask for Janus, was published in 1952 and reflected the medieval literature he had been translating. His next two books of poetry showed a change in style, with irregular form and a lack of punctuation. In 1970, he published The Carrier of Ladders, which won him the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1971. In 1976, Merwin moved to Hawaii to study Zen Buddhism. He married Paula Dunway in 1983 and they have lived in Maui for 30 years. When they moved to Maui, they purchased an old pineapple plantation and worked for many years to restore it to its original rainforest state. In 2010, Merwin was named the U.S. Poet Laureate. He has won numerous awards, including the Bollingen Prize, the Tanning Prize, the Lilly Prize, and the Lannan Lifetime Achievement Award. A collection of his poems won the National Book Award for Poetry as well as the Bobbitt Prize from the Library of Congress.
