HOW WINCHES ARE RATED Rated line pull and line pulling speed vary according to the amount of cable wrapped onto the drum. The first layer of rope on the drum delivers the slowest speed and the largest line pulling force. The top layer delivers the fastest speed and the least line pulling force. Additionally, the incline on which the load is pulled has a direct ef fect on the capacity of the winch. The steeper the slope, the lower the capacity. It is usual for utility winches to be rated by the maximum rolling load the winch can pull. The rolling load performance shown on the Rolling Weight chart includes a 12% friction factor. Also note that the rolling load performance figures shown are based on moving the load across a hard, level, smooth surface.
RATED LINE PULL This figure is derived from a standard industry practice and is the maximum rope tensile force that can be applied by the winch with only one layer of cable on the drum. It is possible to double the pulling force by incorporating a pulley block. Note that the end of the cable should not be secured back onto the winch but onto a separate secure mounting nearby. WARNING Winches are not designed to be used as hoists for lifting, supporting or transporting slung loads.
