From the Editor’s Desk The AO Alliance Perhaps the last article confused you. What, another AO? As you are aware, we have many AOs: the AO Foundation, AONA, AOTrauma, AOVET and on and on. So why suddenly is there an AO Alliance Foundation? Since the establishment of the AO Foundation 30 years ago, there has been a desire to take fracture care to the developing world. Initially this was a very fragmented attempt, assuming that left over or obsolete implants and instrumentation would be of some benefit. This program was rarely helpful due to local conditions and lack of healthcare infrastructures. Jim Hughes, one of the first North American trustees, began to focus the AO Foundation on a program that was more centered on local needs; and this was transitioned into the AO Foundation Socioeconomic Committee (SEC) under the ongoing leadership of Paul Demmer, John Croser and now Joachim Prien. The SEC focused on assessing the local needs for fracture care and then working with local surgeons and operating room personnel to develop educational and training programs and reverse fellowship to further advance fracture care in these countries. However, this was limited financially and restricted due to the agreements with the implant producers. In order to provide a more robust concept to deliver education and support for the developing countries, it was felt that a new independent foundation was needed. To assure independence, a group of surgeons (the Founders) donated the start-up funds for the Alliance. A board consisting of surgeons and experienced individuals in the needs of developing nations was established to develop the Alliance’s strategy and begin implementing programs and raising funds. This foundation, being totally independent from the AO Foundation, would allow for more focused programs to be developed using the resource of the AO Foundation. It would also allow the Alliance to approach other foundations and programs with similar goals. Existing programs will be able to work with the Alliance in collaborating to meet their common goals and simultaneously provide a stronger basis for achieving funds to support these initiatives. Finally, it would permit the contracting with implant producers and other industrial partners to satisfy local needs. With the new Alliance, the AO SEC has been disbanded, and its role and funding from AO has been assumed by the Alliance. The Alliance is now positioned to become a focused, coordinating body of surgeons, developing countries and funding bodies to establish collaborative programs for delivering education and training in the management of

Announcing Robert McGuire, MD as the New AO North America President-Elect The AO North America Board of Directors is pleased to announce the election of Robert A. McGuire, MD as President-Elect of AONA. He will serve as President-Elect from now through July 1, 2015, when he begins a three-year term as President. According to the bylaws of AONA, Inc., the Chairman of the Board, AONA, John H. Wilber, MD selected a Nominating Committee consisting of the Chairman of each Clinical Division – Stephen H. Sims, MD, AOTrauma, Damir Matic, MD, AOCMF, Michael G. Fehlings, MD, AOSpine and Alan J. Ruggles, DVM, AOVET – to select the next President of AONA to succeed current AONA President Michael Baumgaertner, MD, whose term ends July 1, 2015. Each Chairman was asked to discuss with their respective boards potential candidates to place into nomination an eligible individual whom they believed could meet the requirements as President of AONA. The nominating committee vetted the candidates and sent the names to The AO North America Board for a simple, majority vote by secret ballot. Dr. McGuire is currently the M. Beckett Howorth Professor and Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. McGuire also serves as the Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at University of Mississippi Medical Center. Not only has Dr. McGuire taught at the University of Mississippi for twenty-four years, twelve of them being the chair in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, but he has served many years in the United States Navy as an Armed Forces health professional. In addition, Dr. McGuire has been a longtime leader and advocate within the AO since 1985. He has had various leadership roles in AOSpine North America. He is an AOSpine Faculty member (since 1993), was the chairman of AOSpine from 2006-2009, is a member of the AOSpine International Board, Chairman of AOSpine TK and is presently a member of AOSpine TK Executive Board.

Dr. McGuire is looking forward to his presidential term and is eager to make a difference. In his letter of intent to serve as President, Dr. McGuire says, “It would be an honor for me to serve as President of AO North America. It will be my duty and privilege to preserve all that is right in the organization, to drive AONA to reach new levels of distinction, and to preserve the legacy of excellence in musculoskeletal care as set forth by our founding fathers years ago.” AOSpine North America Board Committee states “He is among the finest examples of a true professional in medical education as demonstrated through the years that he has served as faculty for AOSpine. But Dr. McGuire’s commitment and dedication to educational and research excellence extends beyond the numerous courses in which he has taught.” The Nominating Committee and the Board of Directors could not have done their jobs better. Dr. McGuire has the perfect skillset for the job of AONA president. Not only is he a proven manager, he demonstrates a clarity of vision of what is great about the AO and for the role AONA must play. Most importantly, he has the people skills to sincerely engage with all the different stakeholders that are critical to the continued success of our organization. I thank Bob for his willingness to serve, says current AONA President Michael Baumgaertner, MD. Please join AO North America in welcoming and supporting Dr. McGuire’s new position as AONA President-Elect. Sincerely,

John H. Wilber, MD Chairman, AO North America Board

AO Alliance Foundation The AO Alliance Foundation, a new entity dedicated to capacity building for trauma care in under developed countries, announced at the end of September 2014 that Claude Martin jr., AOTrauma Executive Director, would assume the role of Managing Director of the AO Alliance Foundation, effective January 1, 2015. On December 13, 2014, in Davos, 11 AO Alliance Foundation Founders signed the registry before the notary to make AO Alliance a separate legal entity of its own. These include some Past-Presidents of the AO Foundation and Past-Chairs of AO SEC.

curriculum for less developed countries also got underway on November 10-11, 2014. This education task force with currently two surgeons with knowledge of less developed countries (Nicholas Lubega and Verona Beckles) aims to establish a portfolio of educational activities applicable to these countries.

The AO Alliance Foundation also launched a call to all AO surgeons already involved in clinical activities in less developed countries (minimum two years and through a partner organization) to submit pre-proposals by October 31, 2014. Seventy-five pre-proposals were received. A sub-committee evaluated the submissions on November 8-9, 2014. Of the 75 submitted, 10 retained projects will be asked to submit full proposals.

The governance of the AO Alliance is also developing well with the Board getting established. Under the chairmanship of Rolf Jeker, with co-Chair Joachim Prein, the Board will hold its first meeting on December 13, 2014 in Davos. Newly named Board members include the following: Jaime Quintero, Jean-Daniel Gerber and Manjul Joshipura.

Another activity involving the development of an education

The AO Alliance Foundation looks forward to a very exciting beginning and future as it truly gets active in 2015.
